SANTA CLARA, Calif.–The San Francisco 49ers closed out their preseason schedule against the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night in high-scoring fashion with a 23-13 victory.

The offense was slow moving from backup quarterback, C.J. Beathard running the show in the first half, but great defensive and special teams play carried the scoring.

Beathard showed off his wheels in the second quarter, getting the first touchdown of the game on a 62-yard scamper up the middle of the field. After realizing the pocket was collapsing, the rookie took off and beat everyone, impressing the faithful at Levi’s.

San Francisco scored their second major just 90 seconds later after Victor Bolden Jr. returned a punt for a touchdown, the second of the preseason while ensuring a spot on the 53-man roster to make the score 16-3.

Tim Hightower ended the half by drilling in a score from one-yard out.

Beathard ended the contest, passing 5-of-9 for 31 yards and taking two sacks.

The 49ers defense was the tale of the game, as they forced a total of five turnovers. Asa Jackson led the way with two interceptions, making a strong case for staying around on the practice team. Ray-Ray Armstrong and Leger Douzable each recovered a fumble.

It was a good thing that the Niners defense looked so strong, as the slow moving offense only generated a total of 266 yards.

Thursday night may have seen 33 49ers sit, but it gave a chance for a few notable players to try and ensure their place on the team before Saturday’s deadline.

There will be a lot of movement on black Friday in Santa Clara as both Kyle Shanahan and Jon Lynch have lots of work to do to cut the roster down to 53 men. They expect to meet with all 37 players on the bubble between now and Saturday’s 1 p.m. deadline.

First String Offense Wakes Up in 49ers Loss 31-30

For the first time this preseason, the 49ers first string offense looked alive as they dominated most of the first half in Sunday night’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Quarterback, Brian Hoyer got going early connecting on a huge deep ball to Marquise Goodwin for a 46-yard touchdown. Hoyer finished the first half passing 12 of 17 for 176 yards and two scores.

Pierre Garcon was also noticeable for the first time wearing red and gold, catching six passes for 64 yards.

Carlos Hyde and Matt Brieda saw most of the carries among the first stringers, as Hyde carried the ball seven times for only 19 yards, but more importantly was a weapon out of the backfield, catching three passes for 45 yards and a touchdown. Brieda also saw seven carries and led the 49ers in rushing yards with 29 yards.

However, leading the night out of the backfield was Raheem Mostert, who scored two touchdowns, both in the second half. Mostert turned a 3rd and 23 in the third quarter for an 87-yard touchdown, as C.J. Beathard hit him on the screen. He also ran in the 49ers final score of the game with 7:48 remaining from four yards out.

The 49ers backfield has impressed all preseason long, making debate on how many running backs the team should try and carry on the 53-man roster. At this point, Hyde and Brieda are locks and Mostert’s performance on Sunday night put him over the top for the roster. Now the decision will come with Joe Williams, who finished the 4th quarter with 16 yards on seven carries.

Despite the strong start to the game, the 49ers fell apart in the fourth quarter, allowing two touchdowns in the final six minutes of the game. Terrell Newby ran in the final score with no time remaining on the clock to cut the San Francisco lead to 31-30.

Minnesota decided to go for two and was successful on the conversion on a quarterback sneak from Taylor Heinicke for the victory.

On the defensive side of the ball, San Francisco fell apart as the game progressed, but once again the key figures had huge games. Rueben Foster led the way with eight tackles, including one for loss, as he continues to show why he was such a steal in the draft.

Sunday night’s game showed the biggest jump in the 49ers ability so far through the preseason and coming in week three gives little hope for the improvement of this team.

San Francisco closes out their preseason schedule at home on Thursday against the LA Chargers and is going to be vital for guys still vying for a spot on the 53-man and practice squad roster.

49ers Second and Third Stringers Earn the Pre-Season Opener Victory 27-17

The Kyle Shannahan era is off to a good start for the San Francisco 49ers, as they bested the Kansas City Chiefs in the pre-season opener 27-17 on Friday evening. The victory needs to be taken with a grain of salt of course since much of the 49ers scoring came late in the game, when 3rd, 4th, and 5th stringers were in there for both sides.

Alex Smith tore up San Francisco on his only possession, passing 4-of-6 for 48 yards with most of it coming on a 32-yard pass to Tyreek Hill on a deep route down the sideline. Spencer Ware finished off the scoring drive, punching it in from two yards out.

The rest of the first half seemed to drag on for both sides. New 49ers’ place kicker, Robbie Gould, saw a lot of action, going 3-for-3 to give San Francisco a 9-7 lead going into the half.

49ers’ starting quarterback, Brian Hoyer, saw only two possessions, connecting on one pass for three yards, while a first down was wiped out by a penalty.

The battle for second string is on between Matt Barkley and rookie, C.J. Beathard. Both impressed, as Barkley finished the night 10-of-17 for 168 yards, but Beathard bested him throwing 7-of-11 for 101 yards and two touchdowns that came in the fourth quarter.

The 49ers were outscored 10-0 in the third quarter, giving the Chiefs as 17-9 lead going into the final frame; giving the impression that the Chiefs were running away with it. However, the Niners dominated the fourth charging down the field on multiple occasions led by Beathard and running back, Raheem Mostert, who finished the night rushing for 89 yards on 15 attempts.

The 49ers defense also looked strong once Smith left the field, as they forced two turnovers, including a Rashard Robinson interception. They were also extremely effective at getting off the field, holding Kansas City to a 20% third-down efficiency.

A few of the bright spots on the defensive side of the ball for San Francisco included Soloman Thomas, who played well into the fourth quarter. Aaron Lynch looked like a monster getting to the quarterback, earning two sacks on three tackles. Rookie, Rueben Foster also had a couple of tackles and a pass deflection.

While earning the victory, there were a few choppy parts of the 49ers game as well. The biggest red flag was the yellow flag, as the Niners committed 17 penalties costing them 131 total yards. Penalties continue to be an issue for the red and gold and need to be addressed in the next three pre-season games.

Another concern was the bland performance from running back Carlos Hyde. It has been reported that Hyde could be on the chopping block due to the additions at the position. Hyde earned the start but was held without a yard on two rushes. He needs to step it up to be the starter come regular season.

Overall, the 49ers second and third stringers outperformed Kansas City’s, but the struggles at the beginning of the contest indicate that there is still a lot of room for growth for San Francisco.

Poor Defense Leads to Barrage of Goals in Earthquakes Loss 4-2

SAN JOSE, Calif.—The Memorial Day fireworks came to San Jose early this weekend, as the Earthquakes held the first leg of the California Classico on Saturday at Avaya Stadium. In a first half that saw five combined goals, both team’s back lines struggled.

It took just 10 minutes for San Jose to find the back of the net. Who else but Chris Wondlowski would get the night going burying his sixth goal of the season. The play was created off the boot of Danny Hoesen to the left of the box. The Dutchman’s cross was perfection, as it found Wondo’s right boot right next to the goal line for the easy putaway.

LA equalized the game in the 18th minute off the foot of Joao Pedro, who picked up his first tally in MLS by beating goaltender David Bingham to the bottom right corner. All credit goes to Ashley Cole though, as he was able to split two defenders on the through ball.

The game remained tied until the 35th minute when Bradley Diallo drew a very controversial penalty inside the box. By driving his way inside, he jumped over Quakes defender and flopped to draw the whistle. Fans of Avaya did not agree with referee, Ricardo Salazar, but it wouldn’t sway his opinion. Giovani dos Santos drilled in the penalty to give LA the 2-1 lead.

San Jose answered back immediately, as Danny Hoesen earned another point, by netting his first goal in an Earthquakes kit. The played developed off the left box, as the cross found Hoesen, who was able to backheel it home for the equalizer.

The terrible half continued for the Quakes back line as LA was able to force an own goal off the back of Victor Bernardez. The cross came in from the right side from Diallo and awkwardly was redirected off of Bernardez’s shoulder into the cage for the 3-2 score.

Play really settled down for the first 20 minutes of the second half until another streaking chance for the Galaxy ended in a goal. Giovani dos Santos scored his second of the match on the breakaway. The opportunity was created by Romain Alessandrini who curled a floater into the box from the left side, allowing Giovani to get under it and head home the 4-2 lead.

LA would clamp down the game defensively and ride out the win for their third straight on the road, as they continue to be one of the hottest in MLS. The win moves the Galaxy up the table now into the final playoff position with 17 points.

San Jose’s loss marks the first of the year at Avaya, as they were unbeaten at home for the first six games of the season. The Quakes remain in the top six in the Western Conference in fourth with 19 points but really squandered the chance to make a big jump. They look to rebound on the road against Portland on Friday against a Timbers team that’s neck and neck with the Quakes.

Quakes Offense Rumples For Three Goals in Win Over Portland

SAN JOSE, Calif.—The San Jose Earthquakes remain undefeated at home after their best performance of the season with a 3-nil win over their rival, Portland. The Timbers came into the contest the top scoring team in MLS, scoring 20 goals in just nine games played, but a beautiful effort by San Jose handed them their second shutout this season.

Coming into the contest, the Quakes scoring had been silent, scoring just nine goals through the first nine games of the season, but it awoke on Saturday night. In the eighth minute, the offense got going and wouldn’t be stopped. A mad scramble in the box found the foot of Jahmir Hyka for his second goal of the season. Chris Wondolowski picked up his fifth assist on the score, putting him second in MLS on the year.

Wondolowski’s night would just be getting started though, as he would find the bottom right corner of the net off with his right foot at the top of the box in the 31st minute. Florian Jungworth dished it beautifully to Wondolowski setting up the goal, marking his first in MLS since his transfer from Germany.

The night wouldn’t be over though, as Jungworth found Wondolowski again in the 55th minute, as Wondolowski was able to chip it past the keeper for the 3-0 lead. Wondolowski’s two tallies push his season total to four and could be a great kick in the pants to get his season back to expectations.

The Timbers pushed late in the second half to get something past Quakes’ keeper David Bingham, but he stood strong, saving everything sent his way.

“As it was getting late in the game, let’s get more than greedy and get the shutout, but it’s going to take a little bit more since they started pressing a lot of guys forward. Our guys were doing a good job defending the box and [David] Bingham came up with some big saves. I’m really happy with the performance tonight,” said Quakes head coach, Dominic Kinnear.

The victory is an important one for the Quakes season, as it shows that they can soundly knock off one of the toughest teams in MLS at home. The Quakes will continue their long homestead with the top team in MLS Sporting KC rolling into town in two weeks.

Quakes Earn Draw Against Revoultion 0-0

The San Jose Earthquakes and the New England Revolution played to a goalless draw on Wednesday in Boston. Goaltenders, David Bingham and Cody Cropper, are to thank, as both sides saw chances at net but the keepers made some magnificent saves in the 0-0 draw.

New England out-shot San Jose 15-8, with a 6-3 margin in on target shots. Despite some stellar goaltending, there was also a bit of sloppiness on the offensive side of the ball, with Chris Wondolowski whiffing on a grade-a chance in the 23rd minute. Just seconds later, Danny Hoesen hit the frame, as the transfer is still looking for his first in a Quakes kit.

San Jose should find themselves lucky, escaping the hostile territory with a point, New England had their chances but didn’t throw enough on target.

With the draw, San Jose remains above the playoff line in the Western Conference table in fifth place. They’ve earned nine points in seven games, going 2-2-3 so far this season, but they need to start turning draws into wins if they want a chance at the MLS postseason.

San Jose has a quick turnaround, as their next draw is on Saturday in Houston, who remains ahead of them in the standings.

San Francisco 49ers report: 49ers Release CB Brock Following Domestic Violence Arrest

By: Joe Lami

SANTA CLARA, Calif.–On Saturday, the San Francisco 49ers released cornerback Tramaine Brock from their roster. The drop comes a day after Brock was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence. The report had stated that there were visible marks on the victim.

Brock is the first such case of an arrest under the new regime of GM John Lynch, which might suggest the 49ers will be going after a zero tolerance policy, especially when it comes to something as heinous as domestic violence. It was foreshadowed in the introductory presser of Lynch and head coach Kyle Shannahan that a zero tolerance policy would be held for off the field issues.

It looks like Lynch is a man of his word as he tries to renavigate the organization to being respectable once again.

Brock had been one of the longest tenured 49ers on the roster, dating back to 2010. Last season, Brock had 49 tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception. On his career, he’s picked the ball off 11 times and has two touchdowns.

Brock was heading into a contract year, as his four-year deal was coming to an end.

The release, of course, will weaken an already poor secondary but shows that there is no room on the team for any criminals and that the 49ers will once again attempt to “win with class”.

Stanford Cardinal Wednesday night game wrap: Cardinal Nearly Pull Off Upset in the Desert lose 74-67

The 2016-17 season hasn’t been a pretty one for the Stanford Cardinal, but on Wednesday night they played one of their best games of the season in a 74-67 loss to ninth-ranked Arizona.

The Cardinal led early, but Arizona took the lead going into the half 35-32. Stanford hung around the rest of the way, as they wouldn’t let U of A out of their grasp.

Closing into the final minutes, the Cardinal tied the game at 67 with just two minutes to go, but a huge bucket from Lauri Markkanen gave the Wildcats the emotional advantage to close the win out.

Allonzo Trier made his first start of the season and was Arizona’s leading scorer. In just his sixth game back from injury, Trier put up 22 points, 12 of which came from the free-throw line to secure the win.

Reid Travis once again carried the Cardinal, leading all scorers with 26 points. The senior forward also brought down 11 rebounds for another double-double.

Marcus Allen and Dorian Pickens also reached double figures for Stanford with 15 and 12 points respectively.

Though, it’s another loss in the Cardinal’s book, Travis believes that the team can take momentum from hanging in with a top team in the country, “we showed ourselves that we can compete with any team in the country when we play hard. It’s going to fuel us going forward.”

The Cardinal close out their Arizona road trip in Tempe on Saturday against the Arizona State Sundevils.

San Francisco 49ers Report: 49ers Front Office Starting to Take Shape

KPIX CBS 5 San Francisco still: San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch

By: Joe Lami

SANTA CLARA–The San Francisco 49ers hunt for a new general manager is over. On Sunday, it was reported that they will hire John Lynch. The team confirmed the report on Monday, naming him as the new general manger.

Lynch has never held a front office position in the NFL but does has ties to the Bay Area, playing his college football at Stanford University. The 49ers and CEO, Jed York, don’t view his inexperience as a bad thing, however, as they are willing to take a chance.

Prior to the hiring, Lynch spent his time as a TV Analyst for the NFL on Fox. While at Fox, it was reported that he was one of the most prepared guys in the meeting, something that York later said was beneficial to his hiring.

The search for a new general manager was a long one for the Santa Clara, California-based team as their first round of interviews included nine candidates, none of which were Lynch. After the second round of interviews, candidates, from the Green Bay Packers organization backed out of discussions, due to pay raises. After all this wasted time, the 49ers had to go back to the drawing board and wanted to bring in expected head coach, Kyle Shanahan into the discussion.

Shanahan, who has yet to be named the head coach is still in his role as offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons in this weekend’s Super Bowl.

Without Shanahan being named coach, it seems like he had a lot to do with the hiring of Lynch. Adam Schefter reported that Lynch reached out to Shanahan to claim interest in the position. Apparently, Shanahan thought there was enough of a fit to suggest the hiring of Lynch.

The 49ers wanted to ensure that the new GM and coach got along after York said in a press conference that there was a lack of communication between Trent Baalke and Chip Kelly multiple times last season.

Since the hire, Lynch has made his first move as the general manager by bringing on Adam Peters as the Vice President of Player Personnel. The former Denver Broncos college scouting director is a great hire for a team that has been abysmal at previous drafts.

San Francisco 49ersReport: 49ers Find Their Coach in Shanahan

USA Today photo: Kyle Shannon with headset will roam the San Francisco 49ers sidelines next season as the team’s head coach according to multiple sources

By: Joe Lami

SANTA CLARA–Multiple reports are coming out that the San Francisco 49ers have found their new head coach, Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan is the son of long-time NFL coach, Mike and has been flying up the football ranks in his young career.

The 37-year old will be taking on his fifth job since 2008, but his first head coaching job, as he has been the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans, Washington Redskins, Clevland Browns, and Atlanta Falcons.

Currently, with Atlanta, Shanahan cannot be named the head coach of the 49ers until they are officially eliminated from playoff contention, which could be as soon as Sunday, where the Falcons host the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship. If Atlanta advances to the Super Bowl, San Francisco will need to wait another two weeks to make the announcement.

The decision of Shanahan is a great one, as the young offensive minded coach has enough experience leading to where he has definitely deserved his opportunity. He was the most desired coach available, after Josh McDaniels, who ended up backing out of the 49ers conversation to stay with New England another year.

A lot is going to be expected of Shanahan to turn around this organization that is looking at their fourth coach in four years, but with the right man for the job, the 49ers could finally possibly get something built in Santa Clara, besides their $1 billion stadium.

.Now, while the 49ers have reportedly found their man in Shanahan, they still seek out his boss, the general manager. Once again, York isn’t sticking to his promise of not leading football operations by making this strange move of hiring the coach before the GM, but with the terrible relationship between Trent Baalke and Chip Kelly, he must view this as the only solution.
