It was a happy mood all-around at SAP Center on Saturday as the San Jose Barracuda followed up a San Jose Sharks win with a victory of their own — a 3-2 overtime defeat over the Iowa Wild.

Jeremy Morin recorded the game-winning goal in overtime on a shot from the right point to give the Barracuda the win.

The Barracuda jumped ahead 2-0 in the first period on goals by Trevor Parkes and Ryan Carpenter. Parkes scored just two minutes into the game, putting home a rebound. Carpenter finished off a nice find by Mirco Mueller on a power play.

But Iowa responded with two goals in the second. Brett Bulmer and Christoph Bertschy scored less than three minutes apart midway through the period to even the score 2-2 heading into the third.

The final stanza was scoreless, but the Barracuda managed to come out on top thanks to a clutch goal in overtime.

San Jose was able to hold Iowa to no goals on three power play opportunities. Goaltender Aaron Dell made 29 saves and the Barracuda outshot the Wild 33-31.

The Barracuda continue their season-long six-game home stand on Saturday against the San Diego Gulls.

Warriors handle Knicks easily for 50th straight home win

By: Eric He

The Golden State Warriors can make the extraordinary look mundane as they routed the Knicks 121-85 at Oracle Arena on Wednesday for their 50th consecutive home win and their 61st victory of the season.

Stephen Curry nailed eight 3-pointers and led the way with 34 points. He drained a couple of difficult 3s at the end of the third quarter that gave the Warriors a commanding 97-64 advantage heading into the fourth, allowing Curry to rest the entire fourth quarter.

The Knicks never threatened in the game as the Warriors recovered from a slow offensive start to take a 31-19 lead after one quarter and a 16-point lead into halftime.

The Warriors nearly doubled up on the Knicks in the third, outscoring them 35-18 to take command of the game.

Golden State shot 50.5 percent from the field and a blistering 48.6 percent from 3-point range while holding New York to sub-40 percent shooting. Curry outscored the entire Knicks starting five by himself.

Every Warrior played and scored in the lopsided contest as the team looks ahead to a tough back-to-back in Dallas and San Antonio on Friday and Saturday.

Earthquakes defeat Timbers behind Amarikwa’s incredible goal

SAN JOSE – Quincy Amarikwa’s wonder goal helped the San Jose Earthquakes prevail 2-1 over the defending-champion Portland Timbers at Avaya Stadium on Sunday evening.

Amarikwa scored in stoppage time of the first half on a perfectly placed chip shot from well outside the box to put the Earthquakes ahead 2-0.

“I made my second touch and looked up and I saw the keeper still struggling to get back to his end line,” Amarikwa said. “I figured if I could put it over his back right shoulder, I’d have the best opportunity to get a goal in that situation. Knowing there was a bunch of puddles on the field, I wasn’t sure if the best course of action would be to dribble, so I had a go and it went in the back of the net.”

Portland, which outshot San Jose 16-8 in the game, put forth a valiant effort in the second half, finally getting on the board in the 89th minute on a goal by Jack McInerney. It was too little, too late, however, as the Earthquakes hung on for the win.

“It’s nice to execute a nice game plan,” said captain Chris Wondolowski. “I thought we knew what we wanted to do.”

The Timbers started off controlling possession and outshot the Earthquakes 10-3 in the first half, but six of those shots were off-target.

Still, they had their fair share of scoring changes, but Lucas Melano banged one off the crossbar five minutes in and a sliding block from Clarence Goodson thwarted Fanendo Adi’s bid on a rush.

Meanwhile, San Jose made its attempts count.

In the 30th minute, Wondolowksi directed in a cross from Anibal Godoy for his second goal in as many games.

Then – in stoppage time – came the goal of the early MLS season. Amarikwa chipped one from 35-feet out on the right flank that eluded the diving Adam Larsen Kwarasey to give San Jose a 2-0 advantage heading into the locker room.

“It gives you chills when you see plays like that no matter what,” head coach Dominic Kinnear said.

When asked about the parallel between his shot and a Stephen Curry long-distance 3-pointer, Amarikwa did not hesitate.

“I’ve been watching Curry shoot from everywhere so I was like, ‘Oh man. If he can do it, I can get lucky one time,’” he said.

Wondolowski noted that it was a well-deserved goal for the scrappy forward.

“His work ethic is contagious,” Wondolowski sad. “He does so much that doesn’t show up in the box score. He doesn’t get as much credit as he should. That’s why I’m so glad he gets a world class goal where people can see how great he is.”

The Earthquakes notch their first win over the Timbers for the first time in five matches and start the season 2-0-0. They head into Saturday’s match against the Galaxy on the road with a head full of steam.

Barracuda’s comeback attempt comes up short in Bakersfield

By: Eric He

The San Jose Barracuda fell behind 3-0 to the Bakersfield Condors on the road Saturday night, and could not come back from a three-goal deficit in a 3-2 defeat.

They were able to claw within a goal and apply pressure late for a chance to even the score, but ran out of time, falling to 5-5-0-1 against the Condors this season.

The Condors scored twice in the first period with a couple of goals by Matt Ford and Ryan Hamilton off rebounds, and then added on early in the second on a marker by Tyler Pitlick, who took advantage of a juicy rebound by Barracuda goaltender Aaron Dell.

Still, San Jose fought back with two goals by Bryan Lerg, the second of which came off a neat move in front to close the deficit to just one.

But despite outshooting Bakersfield 33-28, the Barracuda could not find the equalizer, snapping their two-game win streak.

It will be a quick turnaround for San Jose as the Barracuda face the Ontario Reign at home on Sunday.

The San Jose Barracuda began a short two-game road trip on the right track with a convincing 4-1 victory over the Stockton Heat on the road on Wednesday night.

The Barracuda jumped ahead with two second period goals. Nikolay Goldobin got things started with a power-play marker  less than eight minutes into the period. Seven minutes later, Goldobin found Jeremy Morin for a goal that put San Jose ahead 2-0.

The sense of urgency continued in the final period, as John McCarthy connected on a breakaway early on to extend the lead to three goals. Barclay Goodrow recorded his team-high 17th goal of the season, fending off a late surge by the Heat for a strong road win.

Aaron Dell stopped 30 shots for the Barracuda, who were 1-of-4 on the power play and were outshot 31-23 by the Heat. But San Jose was able to hold Stockton to just two power plays, killing off both penalties.

The Barracuda currently stand at fourth in the Pacific Division and will play the Condors on Saturday on the road.

By: Eric He

The Golden State Warriors once again proved their rightful spot atop the NBA, defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder for the second time in less than a week, 121-106 at Oracle Arena Thursday night.

It was the Warriors’ 44th consecutive home win, tying the record set by the 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls.

Stephen Curry led the way with 33 points while Klay Thompson poured in 21 points. Both Curry and Andre Iguodala returned the lineup after missing Tuesday’s game against the Hawks.

The Warriors trailed 83-82 heading into the fourth quarter, but scored the first six points of the final stanza to take the lead and never look back, opening up a double-digit lead with under four minutes to play. A three-pointer by Curry put the Warriors up 114-100 and sealed the victory.

The Thunder once again played the Warriors tight for much of the game. They were led by 32 points from Kevin Durant and 22 from Russell Westbrook.

The San Jose Barracuda wrapped up a four-game road trip with a 5-2 loss in San Diego against the Gulls on Saturday night.

Despite outshooting San Diego 43-26, San Jose was unable to find the back to the net enough times. The Barracuda fell behind 2-0 early as Brian McGrattan and Nic Kerdiles scored in the first period for the Gulls.

The Barracuda cut the lead in half on a power play goal by John McCarthy, but the Gulls responded with two more scores as Kerdiles ripped a writers past Barracuda goaltender Troy Groesnick to extend the San Diego lead to 3-1. Late in the second period on a power play, Chris Wagner connected on a rebound for the Gulls for a three-goal lead.

Trevor Parkes’ goal 26 seconds into the third period narrowed the deficit back to two, but an empty-net goal by Wagner sealed the victory for San Diego.

The Barracuda fall to 23-18-6-3 and finish the road trip with two wins, a shootout loss and a regulation loss. Next up, they face Stockton at the SAP Center on Tuesday.

Ben Smith scored with under two minutes to play in regulation to give the San Jose Barracuda a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the Bakersfield Condors on the road on Friday night.

With the game tied 3-3, the Barracuda managed to keep the puck in the offensive zone, and Smith cleaned up a rebound from in close for the game-winning goal.

The Barracuda trailed 2-0 as the Condors notched the first two scores. Tyler Pitlick and Dillon Simpson lit the lamp early, but San Jose carried some momentum into the second period after Ryan Carpenter put them on the board with a late first period goal.

San Jose evened it at two goals apiece at the 7:53 mark of the second as John McCarthy re-directed one into the net, only to have Rob Klinkhammer finish a nice bang-bang play in front and give Bakersfield the lead five minutes later.

But the Barracuda responded, with Michael Haley firing in a wrist shot to tie the game up heading into the third period.

The Barracuda wound up outshooting the Condors 34-24 as Aaron Dell recorded 21 saves.

Next up, San Jose will play the San Diego Gulls on the road Saturday night.

Curry goes for 51 points in Warriors’ win over Magic

By: Eric He

Stephen Curry drained 10 3-pointers en route to a 51-point performance as the Warriors beat the Magic 130-114 on the road.

Curry also finished his 128th consecutive game with a 3-point field goal, setting a NBA record.

The Warriors dropped 40 points in the third quarter to give themselves breathing room. Curry buried triple after triple, including a bank shot from half-court at the buzzer to give the Warriors a 99-91 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Much like last night, the Warriors were locked in a tight battle in the first half as the Magic shot at a high percentage and were competitive with the defending champions.

Curry paced the Warriors with 22 points in the first half, but Golden State trailed 63-59 at halftime. The deficit meant nothing for Curry, who shined again and delivered his third 50-point performance of the season.

The defending MVP largely carried the load, as the next-highest scoring Warriors player was Marreese Speights, who had 14.

The Warriors wrap up their seven-game road trip against the Thunder on Saturday.
