Eagles dominate Kansas City with 40-22 romp inSuper Bowl LIX

Sunday, February 9, 2025

Kansas City’s hopes for a third consecutive Super Bowl victory were all but dashed by a powerful first half by Philadelphia Sunday at the Superdome in New Orleans, as the NFC champion Eagles routed the AFC champion Chiefs 40-22 in SB LIX.

Jalen Hurts was selected as the game’s most valuable player. Hurts was 17 of 22 passing for 221 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 72 yards on 11 carries – a Super Bowl record for a quarterback – and a rushing touchdown.

Hurts became the first quarterback to win a Super Bowl after losing one since Bob Griese won with Miami in 1972. DeVonta Smith was his primary target with four catches for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 21 of 32 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns, but was also sacked six times. Mahomes was also Kansas City’s leading rusher with 25 yards on four attempts. Xavier Worthy caught eight passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns.

This was Philadelphia’s second Super Bowl victory, the first was in 2017. The Eagles lost in 2022, 2004 and 1980. In the pre-Super Bowl era, the Eagles won NFL titles in 1948, 1949 and 1960. The Chiefs won AFL championships in 1962 (as Dallas Texans), 1966 and 1969. Kansas City won Super Bowls in 1969, 2019, 2022 and 2023, losing in 2020.

The Eagles built a 24-0 halftime lead on Hurts’ 1-yard TD run, Jake Elliott’s 48-yard field goal, Cooper DeJean’s 38-yard pick-six, and A.J. Brown’s 12-yard scoring pass from Hurts.

Philadelphia extended its lead in the third quarter to 34-0 on Elliott’s 29-yard field goal, and a 48-yard scoring strike from Hurts to Smith. Kansas City got on the board with 34 seconds left in the quarter on Worthy’s 24-yard TD pas from Mahomes.

The Eagles used two ore Elliott field goals of 43 and 50 yards to build a 40-6 lead. Kansas City found the end zone twice in the last three minutes on touchdown passes from Mahomes to DeAndre Hopkins and Worthy.

Records set in Super Bowl LIX besides Hurts’ QB rushing: Elliott kicked four field goals and four extra points for 16 kicking points, his four field goals ties a record held by three others.

The average ticket to watch in person was $7,300 (fees included) according to Stubhub. Ticketmaster had seats listed for $6,600.

Kendrick Lamar provided the halftime entertainment with a guest appearance by dancer and tennis champion Serena Williams. Jon Batiste sang the National Anthem and Lauren Diagle performed “America The Beautiful.”

Donald Trump became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl. He predicted a Chiefs victory.

Rankings Don’t Matter: Cal Women Outclassed By No. 3 Notre Dame in 91-52 Loss

By Morris Phillips

If the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have another gear, the Cal women don’t want to see it.

As it was, the Bears found themselves as unwilling passengers in a vehicle speeding east on Interstate 90 in Northern Indiana, barely hinged with their seat belts unfastened. The ride wasn’t comfortable or in anyway enjoyable.

For Notre Dame, the same experience could be described as cruise control. The Irish walloped Cal, 91-52 in winning their 16th straight game, just another statement in their quest to be ACC Champions and Final Four participants this season.

Regardless of the outcome, the largest margin of victory by Notre Dame over another ranked team since 1999, Coach Charmin Smith made it clear that her team must embrace what they experienced.

“Notre Dame is a really good team, and we had moments in which we were able to do to play at that level and to contain them and keep them off the boards and do a better job of taking care of the ball,” Smith said. “And then it wasn’t something that we could sustain for 40 minutes. So that’s our process, working on being at an elite level for 40 minutes. Obviously, you’ve got household names and first round WNBA draft picks on that team, and I’m proud of how we stayed with it, and we were still fighting in the fourth quarter.”

Smith’s Bears (19-6, 7-5) found the pace unsettling, as they committed 21 turnovers, shot just 32 percent from the floor and missed 20 3-point attempts. Cal trailed by 21 points at the half, and by 37 points after a particularly lopsided third quarter.

Throughout, Notre Dame’s ball and player movement at the offensive end was constant and flawless, as potential WNBA guards Olivia Miles and Hannah Hildalgo took turns getting to the basket or finding cutting teammates for layups. For the game, Notre Dame shot 55 percent from the floor, and 50 percent from three.

“Offensively, I think we’re growing and getting better spacing,” coach Niele Ivey said. “I thought we did a great job. We had 46 points in the paint, and we had 20 assists.”

Cal still has a hefty NCAA Tournament resume, but their seeding will undoubtedly take a hit just because of uncompetitive losses at Duke by 34 points, and by 39 points on Sunday afternoon. The remainder of their announced schedule is kind, and it’s critical that Cal take advantage of all six opportunities to boost their win total.

The Bears were led by a trio of starters that scored in double figures topped by Lulu Twidale with 14 points. Michelle Onyiah and Marta Suarez scored 10 points each with Suarez also grabbing eight rebounds.

The Bears return home on Thursday to face Boston College at Haas Pavilion.

NBA G League Saturday Action: Wolves come away with upset two game sweep over Kings in 125-120 win

Stockton Kings forward Skal Labissiere (8) scored 40 points leading the Kings in scoring against the Iowa Wolves at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on Sat Feb 8, 2025 (Stockton Kings X photo)

By William Espy

The Stockton Kings were back at it on Saturday night, as they looked to get revenge for a disappointing loss the night before. The Iowa Wolves on the other hand, were looking to continue building their momentum at home and try to start climbing up the standings by sweeping one of the G League’s best teams. The Kings who were one of the hottest teams in the G League were upset by the Wolves 125-120 losing the two game series in Iowa.

The Kings got off to a better start this time out, leading after the first quarter 34-32. There was certainly more to be desired defensively, as even though they scored a solid number of points, they weren’t able to pull away from the home team. The second quarter was very similar.

Iowa narrowly outscored the Kings in the second, 29-28 however Stockton still maintained a one point lead. At this point, it seemed obvious that a second straight upset could be in the cards, as the Kings hadn’t come out with the energy that you typically see from a top team after an unexpected loss.

Coming out of halftime, the Wolves were on fire. They dominated offensively, outscoring Stockton 38-27 and taking a big lead heading into the final frame. With Iowa leading 99-89 heading into the fourth quarter, the Kings once again found themselves needing to climb out of a sizable hole if they were to walk away victorious.

The Kings had a strong fourth quarter, outscoring Iowa but similar to the night before, it was too little, too late. When the game was settled, Iowa walked away with a sweep over the top team in the Western Conference.

The Wolves walked away with a 125-120 win, improving their record to 4-14 on the season. Meanwhile, the Kings fell to 14-6 and gave the Austin Spurs the opportunity to catch up if they win their three games in hand.

Skal Labissiere had a phenomenal night for the Kings, going 16-23 from the field and putting up 40 points which set a new season high for the 28-year-old big man from Haiti.

Despite Skal’s strong performance, it seems clear that the Kings are struggling without a key piece. Colby Jones being traded ahead of the NBA’s trade deadline has severely weakened the team, however it’s up to them to adjust as player movement is to be expected at this level.

Meanwhile for Iowa, they were led by Nojel Eastern who scored a career-high 34 points in the win. Trevor Keels and Babacar Sane weren’t far behind, with 26 and 22 points respectively.

The Kings will be back at it on the 13th, as they visit the Santa Cruz Warriors for what will undoubtedly be a very important game in regards to the standings.

Kings Overcome Slow Start to Secure Gritty Win Over Pelicans 123-118

Kings newcomers Zach LaVine, Jonas Valančiūnas, and Jake LaRavia light the beam postgame (Photo Sacramento Kings on X).

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO – On Saturday, the Sacramento Kings returned home, ready to take on the New Orleans Pelicans. The Pelicans entered the matchup as one of the worst teams in the NBA, holding a 12-39 record on the season. After the Kings’ loss on Thursday in Portland, they desperately needed a win against the struggling New Orleans squad. The game tipped off at 7 PM PST inside the Golden 1 Center, where the Kings secured a 123-118 victory over the Pelicans.

In the first quarter, the Kings got off to a horrendous start. Their starters were overwhelmed, and the team quickly fell behind by 20 points as the Pelicans took control early, leading 29-9. With the starters struggling, Doug Christie turned to his bench, bringing in Jonas Valančiūnas, Jake LaRavia, and Keon Ellis. The energy immediately shifted, allowing the Kings to cut the deficit to five points. By the end of the quarter, the Kings trailed the Pelicans 34-24, leaving them with work to do.

The Kings showed improvement in the second quarter, but they still couldn’t keep pace with the Pelicans. New Orleans outscored Sacramento 34-30, extending their lead. At halftime, the Kings trailed 65-54. Domantas Sabonis led the way for Sacramento with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the first half.

The third quarter saw the Kings’ offense come alive. They went on a tear, outscoring the Pelicans 45-22 to storm back and take the lead, entering the fourth quarter ahead 99-87. Through three quarters, Zion Williamson led New Orleans with 27 points, while Sabonis paced the Kings with 21.

In the final quarter, the Pelicans outscored the Kings 31-24, but it wasn’t enough to complete a comeback. Sacramento did just enough in the closing minutes to secure the 123-118 victory. Although it wasn’t the prettiest game, the Kings managed to get the job done, which was the most important factor for Doug Christie heading into the matchup. Sabonis led the team with 27 points and 16 rebounds, though he fouled out in the final minutes for the second consecutive game. Williamson finished as the game’s top scorer, dropping 40 points on an ultra-efficient 16-of-21 shooting.

Postgame, I spoke with Trey Murphy about his consistent success against the Kings whenever he plays in Sacramento. On Saturday, he put up 20 points and jokingly said, “I like the nets here in Sacramento.” Murphy continues to develop his game, making significant strides in his fourth NBA season.

Doug Christie addressed the media after the game, reflecting on the slow start. “The start of the game was not really what we wanted. We have to figure out how to begin a little closer to what we did in the third quarter… but the bench came in and gave us a huge boost.”

As the game neared its final minutes, Malik Monk repeatedly approached the scorer’s table only to return to the bench. Postgame, I asked Doug if Monk was set to replace Keon Ellis or another player. Christie clarified, saying, “No, he was coming in for Deebo, but Deebo made a shot. If Malik was in that position, Deebo would have been like, ‘leave him in the game.’ They understand the game, and it’s more about winning.”

This insight sheds light on the potential future role of Keon Ellis. He appears to be one of the most impactful players on the roster, and time will tell if that earns him a spot in the starting lineup. His inclusion in the closing minutes suggests that he is already being rewarded for his contributions.

Cardinal Pushed Back the Wolfpack, 74-73, on a Late Afternoon on the Farm; Agarwal the Hero

Stanford Cardinal forward Donavin Young (2) is seen here in a game against North Carolina State Wolfpack on Sat Feb 8, 2025 at Maple Pavilion in Palo Alto (Stanford Cardinal X)

By Michael Roberson

STANFORD, Calif. — Ryan Agarwal’s game-winning layup helped the Stanford Cardinal (16-8, 8-5 ACC) regain the Maples Pavilion advantage, after defeating the North Carolina Wolfpack (9-14, 2-10 ACC) 74-73 in the Sunny Bay Area.

Stanford junior guard Oziyah Sellers put his squad on the scoreboard first from the “charity stripe.” He calmly converted two free throws, putting the Cardinal up 2-0. There would be three ties and three lead changes within the first 20-minute stanza.

Within that time frame, Stanford led by as much as three points, and went on a 4-0 run. The Wolfpack, on the other hand/paw, took a seven point advantage, and had a 6-0 run of their own.

Sellers led the Cardinal at recess, with 10 points. He was also the ony one on his team with double-digit scoring. Freshman sensation Trey Parker had the same distinction for his pack; however, his 12 points came on a sizzling 4-4 shooting from beyond the arc.

The Wolfpack managed to keep a four point distance between themselves and the Cardinal. Leading 33-29 midway through the conference contest,

Free throws once again were the path for digital movement on the scoreboards in the beginning of the second half. This time it was performed by the visitors. Senior Dontrez Styles put his team up by six, their largest lead of the second half.

The back and forth the first half produced between the two ACC foes more than double itself in the second half. There were five more lead changes and four additional ties.

NC State had their largest 2nd half lead with the aforementioned free throws. The Cardinal, on the other hand, had 6-0 and 9-0 runs, while leading by as many as nine points.

Stanford did everything they could to protect home-court advantage, but the Wolfpack were ungrateful guests and attempted to put Stanford in a home losing streak. However, the Cardinal were able to avoid the Wolfpack’s bite, by the bark of their tree. Stanford won by one, 74-73.

Agarwal’s layup with :08 left in regulation, despite the hot handed Trey Parker attempting a potential game-winning…his first name. The shot did not go in, and it may have not been released in time either. It was a scary momen, because Parker was 5-8 from Three Land, including that final miss.

Maxime Raynaud produced his 20th double-double (25 points and 12 rebounds) of the season, tying a Stanford record held by Adam Keefe. Oziyah Sellers finished with 12 points, whileEvan Stinson and Chisom Okpara both chipped in 10 points apiece. Although he finished below double-figures plateau, Agarwal made the most importatnt basket at the end. He tallied 9 points and 8 assists.

The Wolfpack were led by Parker’s 19 points. Dontrez Styles added 18 points and 7 rebounds to the cause, while Marcus Hill Jr. chipped in 14 points. . Stanford won a conference thriller, 74-73!

Stanford will next be in action Wednesday, February 12 in Atlanta, as they will take on the Georgia Tech YellowJackets at 7 PM ET/ 4:00 PM PT on the ACC Network. NC State heads back to Raleigh on the same date, to host the Louisville Cardinals at & PM ET on ESPN2/U.
