Barracuda drop last game of road trip 4-2 against San Diego

Coming into Sunday’s game the San Diego Gulls made a come back on the San Jose Barracuda after being down in the first period 2-1. San Diego scored two third period goals for a 4-2 win. The last time these two teams faced off was on New Year’s day when Lucas Carlsson scored the OT winner.

San Jose kept their scoring first agenda with Scott Sabourin scoring his sixth of the season at 4:20 of the first. Sabourin picking up Filip Bystedt’s rebound off San Jose’s second shot of the game. Pavol Regenda registering the secondary assist in his return back to San Diego. After a redirection shot, Roland McKeown scores his 9th of the season to tie the game at 1-1. Dilon Heatherington and Ryan Carpenter registering the assists.

A quick response by Thomas Bordeleau, San Jose got back in front at 14:05 of the first. Bordeleau with his tenth goal of the season after sitting out yesterday’s game due to a suspension. Collin Graf registering the main assist and Andrew Poturalski registering the secondary assist.

On their 4th powerplay opportunity of the game, Justin Bailey ties the game at 2-2 at 16:15 of the second. Justin Bailey with his third power play goal of the season against his former team. Sam Colangelo and Ryan Carpenter registering the assists.

San Diego got their first lead of the game at 3:56 of the third. After a Pavol Regenda tripping penalty, Justin Bailey scored his fourth power play goal of the season, and second of the game. Ryan Carpenter and Tristan Luneau registering the assists.

Nathan Gaucher secured the win for San Diego with two seconds left in the game. Gaucher with his sixth goal of the season. Sam Colangelo and Oscar Dansk registering the assists.

The Barracuda will be back in action on Wednesday at home for a one-game series against the Ontario Reign. The last time these two teams faced off was on December 15th 2024 where they fell 5-4. Danil Guschin, Lucas Carlsson, Thomas Bordeleau, and Ethan Cardwell all scored in the loss. Cardwell with a multi-game night registering two assists.

#1 Charlie one thing you can say about the City of San Francisco hosting the NBA All Star Game there was a police presence in the late night hours around downtown and nearby Union Square. This is unusual to see that much coverage but the City doesn’t want any headlines during this high profile event.

# 2 The Golden State Warriors had struggled for much of this season until they recently picked up Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat. Since then Golden State are 2-1 with Butler and it has freed up Stephen Curry from being double or triple teamed.

#3 Charlie, longtime NBC Game of the Week Curt Gowdy had the Media Award named after him. This year the top recognized journalist is Adrian Wojnarowski a former ESPN writer. Wojnarowski worked at Yahoo! Sports in 2007 and retired last September. Gowdy worked as the play by play announcer for baseball and football on NBC.

#4 The Sacramento A’s announced they will be heard on Sacramento flagship station KSTE Talk 650 and the A’s will continue to broadcast on their former flagship station 960 KNEW Oakland with English broadcasters Ken Korach, Johnny Doskow, and Chris Caray. The pre and post game shows will be broadcasted by former A’s second baseman Shooty Babbitt and former Dodger second baseman Steve Sax.

#5 The A’s have made no decision on Spanish radio. The A’s are in negotiations with Multi Cultural Broadcasting and no word if there has been any agreement as to the amount of how much the A’s will pay for broadcasting rights or any agreement at all. The A’s who broadcast on 990 KATD Pittsburg and 1010 KIQI San Francisco during their Oakland days would be the two stations returning to Sacramento if the A’s and Multi Cultural come to some agreement.

On Sacramento A’s relocation podcast with Daniel Dullum:

#1 There a lot of questions being asked as spring training started on Wednesday for the Sacramento A’s in Mesa Arizona. One them is how are the A’s going to play in a packed 14,014 seat minor league park sharing it with the Giants triple A team for 132 dates (Triple A is over at the end of August) trying to fit fans, media, front office people, scouts, employees in a tight space.

#2 Taking a look at the developments of Sutter Health Park in Sacramento the A’s 2025-27 ballpark the field is still dug up the entire field is dirt and they are designing the infield and will plant grass there shortly.

#3 Construction is ongoing for the clubhouses which will be located outside of the outfield wall, It is expected to be ready by opening day March 31st.

#4 How much of a beating will that field get with 132 games being played there everyday with the A’s and River Cats taking turns.

#5 The A’s will play their post season games if they make post season in a number of places but it will outside of Sacramento. Options include neutral sites Oracle Park in San Francisco, Oakland Coliseum which is not too far off the mark because Oakland has a interim mayor Kevin Jenkins who might give them a much better deal for post season than former Mayor Sheng Thao who offered the A’s a $91 million three year deal which the A’s walked away from.

Barracuda snap 2 game losing streak, Poturalski scores game winning goal defeat Condors 4-3

Coming into Saturday’s game, the San Jose Barracuda were looking to come back after coming off of a sweep against the Colorado Eagles last Tuesday and Wednesday. The last time the Barracuda and Bakersfield Condors faced off was at home on Saturday December 21st where they fell 4-2, being swept. The Barracuda on Saturday were edged by the Condors 4-3 at Mechanics Bank Arena.

San Jose got on the board first scoring their sixth 4 on 3 goal of the season. After attacking the zone, Danil Guschin scored his 13th goal of the season. Filip Bystedt and Luca Cagnoni registering the assists. A minute and ten seconds later, Bakersfield answered back, tying it at 1-1. Connor Carrick scoring his first power play goal of the season, Seth Griffith and Matthew Savoie registering the assists.

Starting the second period with a two minute powerplay, Luca Cagnoni scored his eighth power play goal of the season. Andrew Poturalski and Danil Guschin registering the assists. 22 seconds later, Bakersfield answered back again, Phil Kemp scoring his sixth of the season. Josh Brown and Drake Caggiula registering the assists.

San Jose got their third lead of the game with less than a minute left in the second. Scott Sabourin attacking and shooting at the net, Anthony Vincent scored his eighth of the season. Sabourin registering the primary assist, Lucas Vanroboys registering the secondary assist.

The Condors were not backing down without a fight. Matthew Savoie tied the game scoring his 13th goal of the season. Connor Carrick registering the lone assist, his second point of the night.

In his first game back since the AHL All-Star challenge and being up with the Sharks, Andrew Poturalski gave the Barracuda their fourth lead of the season. With the primary assist, Rem Pitlick registered his first point of the season, Graf with the secondary assist.

SJSU drops second in a row without Uduje and McClendon 73-58

SAN JOSE- Rough game for the San Jose State Spartans in a 73-58 loss against the Nevada Wolf Pack on Friday night. San Jose State looked to get back in the win column after giving up a 17 point lead after the first half, ultimately falling. A significant part of the last game on Tuesday was the absences Josh Uduje and Will McClendon. Both players were ruled out again for Friday night’s game.

Going into the locker room after the first half only up by one point, San Jose State needed to do some gameplanning. Throughout the first half, the Spartans played a decent game, scoring first. The only thing that went wrong was the amount of turnovers. San Jose State had 20 turnovers which led to the Wolfpack having more scoring chances. Pasha Goodarzi was the first half player that stood out, only missing two shots.

San Jose State didn’t come out with the energy they needed to in the second half. They shot 32.14% FG and 23% from the three-point line. Neither team scored until Nevada scored at 10:52, caused by a turnover on the Spartans. Latrell Davis stepped up once again shooting 5-12 FG and 3-9 from the three-point line, leading the team with 17 points. The only player with points in double digits.

The Spartans will be back in action on Wednesday February 19th where they will travel to Utah State to take on the Aggies. The last time these two teams faced off was on January 7th where SJSU fell short 78-85. Donovan Yap.Jr and Latrell Davis both with 20 points each but the Spartans only went 7-16 at the three point line. Only shooting 43% from the three point line and 46% from the free throw line, making those will be crucial for Wednesday’s matchup.

NBA G League Action: Warriors strong second quarter dooms Kings 152-144

The Stockton Kings continued their road trip against the Santa Cruz Warriors, in a game that had a major effect on the standings in the long run in a high scoring loss 152-144 at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Cruz.

The Kings were recently overtaken by the Austin Spurs for first in the Western Conference, putting Stockton and Santa Cruz in a battle for second place.

The Kings got off to a strong start, leading 35-32 after the first quarter. It was clear right out of the gate that this would be a game decided by offensive firepower rather than defensive play. The second quarter was ultimately what decided the game, as the Warriors dominated, out scoring the Kings 43-28 and taking a resounding lead, 75-63, into halftime.

In the third, the Kings made a slight dent in the Warriors lead but it was only by a single point. The Warriors still led by 11 heading into the final frame but it was still within reach for Stockton.

The fourth quarter was a shootout essentially, the teams were seemingly scoring at will. The Kings outscored the Warriors for the third time of the night, but they were unable to bridge the gap that Santa Cruz forged in the second quarter. The Warriors walked away victorious, with a final score of 152-144.

Devin Carter, Terry Taylor, Jon Elmore and Isaiah Crawford all scored more than 20 points on the night. Carter finished the night with a very impressive stat line, 29 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.

On the other side, Blake Hinson and Yuri Collins were the difference makers offensively for the Warriors. Hinson dropped 42 points on the night, while Collins finished with 32 of his own. Both ended the night with a double-double, as Collins had ten assists and Hinson recorded 11 boards.

The Kings will be back at home on February 26, as they host the Memphis Hustle in a matinee showdown at 11 AM. The Warriors on the other hand will host the Oklahoma City Blue on the 21st.

Sacramento Kings podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson:

#1 The only way the New Orleans Pelicans (13-42) were going to end their nine game losing streak was to score lost of points and that’s what they did to split a two game set with the Sacramento Kings (28-27) on Thursday night 140-133 at Smoothie King Arena in New Orleans.

#2 The Kings made an all out effort to get this game but the Pelicans were on a mission to avoid losing a tenth straight game and it was a game of pride for them for this win.

#3 The Kings leading scorer Zach LaVine went all out with 32 points, two rebounds, and two assists in spite of the loss the Kings looked like they got what they bargained for in obtaining a player like LaVine.

#4 Malik Monk has been a big help he was second in scoring for the Kings with 24 points, six rebounds and nine assists. In some of the Kings wins Monk has been right there in the offensive tally.

#5 Next up for the Kings they’ll face Golden State at Sacramento. The Warriors have won six of their last ten games are are just behind the ninth place Kings in tenth place. Can the Kings fend off Jimmy Butler and the Warriors on Fri Feb 21st?

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Cal gets back in win column with 72-63 win over Boston College; Onyiah leads with 21 points for Bears

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips:

#1 Cal head coach Charmin Smith picked up her first 20 game win that improved Cal’s record to 20-6 for the season it was exciting for coach Smith to pick up the win but also for the players to help get that win.

#2 The Cal starting five played some potent basketball against the Boston College Eagles for a 72-63 win at Haas Pavilion on Thursday night.

#3 Top scorer for Thursday night for Cal Michelle Onyiah with 21 points she is one of the most improved players at Cal.

#4 Cal’s defense in the second quarter was impressive holding the Eagles to just ten points but the Eagles had a break out fourth quarter scoring 22 points to Cal’s 21 none the less it wasn’t enough as the Bears win it by nine points.

#5 Cal could win another one as they take on the Syracuse Orange on Sun Feb 16th for a 3:00pm tip off at Haas Pavilion. Syracuse is 10-14 and are 13th in the ACC. How do you see this one this coming Sunday?

Kings Fall to Lowly Pelicans 140-133 In Overtime

The Sacramento Kings (28-26) did everything offensively they could to try and beat the struggling New Orleans Pelicans (12-42) but fell flat defensively. They were unable to contain CJ McCollum who had a banner night scoring 43 points.

The Kings miraculously got this game into overtime when all seemed lost but played a horrible five minutes of extra play. Their stats offensively were great. LaVine with 32 points, Monk with 24, Sabonis 28 rebounds and 22 points, DeRozan with 20 and Murray with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Solid number anyway you look at it. It all pointed to a defensive letdown.

Game recap: Sacramento got a bit of a slow start in the first quarter barely outscoring the Pelicans 29-28. They went on to outscore New Orleans in the second quarter 36-32 and leading at the half 65-60. This game had all the makings of a very close contest.

The game was tied a number of times in the third quarter as the lead went back and forth in this see-saw affair. If the Kings wanted a sweep they were going to have to work very hard for it; it was not going to come easy.

The Pelicans had the lead going into the fourth quarter 98-95. The Pelicans CJ McCollum had the game high going into the final quarter with 27 points. Sacramento was having great success from beyond the arc with 16 three’s. The Pelicans were also challenging with the long ball hitting 14 three’s.

The Pelicans continued to extend their lead in the fourth quarter taking a six point lead in the early minutes of the final quarter 103-97. The Kings were still turning the ball over (13 turnovers) with poor ball protection.

New Orleans continued to protect their six point lead and at 7:42 had pushed their lead out to 110-102. There was still a lot of time left in the game but the Kings had to get something productive going. Their offense had been flat in the second half.

The Pelicans had won the third quarter 38-30 and they were outscoring the Kings in the fourth quarter. At 4:04 the Kings trailed by a single point 116-117 looking to take back the lead. At 3:43 the game was tied at 117 and seconds later the Kings had taken the lead 120-117 after trailing the entire fourth quarter and the race was on.

With ten seconds left in the game, Sacramento let the Pelicans off the hook and trailed 125-122. The Kings never got the chance to take the three that would tie the game. Malik Monk was fouled, making both free throws.

Monk was fouled a second time to tie up the game at 127 in a surprise turn of events. Everything pointed to a Pelicans win but a missed Domantas Sabonis free throw was rebounded by Malik Monk and it was Monk back at the free throw line tying up this game and it was off to overtime.

With two minutes left in overtime this game remained tied at 133. The Pelicans CJ McCollum who had been hot all night hit a three giving New Orleans the lead 136-133. The Pelicans extended their lead 138-133 and Sacramento was in deep trouble. The final was 140-133 in favor of New Orleans.

After tying up the game, the Kings had a great opportunity to win this game but played a very poor five minutes of overtime. Domantas Sabonis did everything possible to spur his team onto a win with 28 rebounds and 22 points.

The entire starting roster had some great numbers with Zach LaVine scoring 32 points, Malik Monk with 24 and DeMar DeRozan with 20. The Kings allowed the Pelicans CJ McCollum to run roughshod all over them scoring 43 points putting an end to the Pelicans ten game skid. McCollum scored 11 points in the overtime to seal the deal.

Game notes: Thursday night the Kings took on the Pelicans in their fourth and final matchup of the season. Sacramento had won the first three games but could not get the sweep Thursday night. Despite a team’s record a sweep is never easy and Sacramento couldn’t get that fourth game.

The Pelicans were without Zion Williamson in this game. It sure seems that Williamson cannot catch a break spending more time off the court than playing on it this season. It was not determined that he was not available Thursday night just hours before the game citing conditioning issues. Brandon Boston Jr. has sprained his left ankle so New Orleans was shorthanded. It did take some pressure off Keegan Murray who has been doing his best to contain Williamson.

Next up for the Kings will be a matchup against the Golden State Warriors at Golden 1 Center next Friday February 21st. The regular season will get back underway next Wednesday once the All-Star Game finishes up this weekend. Tipoff for Kings game is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Cal Women Beat Visiting Boston College, Coach Smith Wins 20th Game For The First Time

BERKELEY, CA–A first time 20th win of a season for Coach Charmin Smith is a moment of celebration. Keeping star post player Michelle Onyiah on the floor, and out of foul trouble, is just the opposite, a point of frustration.

Taking the good with the bad is just part of the job, and on a night that Onyiah put up 21 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out in Cal’s 73-62 victory, Smith will undoubtedly take it.

The Cal women rebounded from a rough weekend in the ACC Midwest outposts of Louisville and Notre Dame in which two losses knocked them from the AP Top 25. The Bears settled into their season’s finishing stretch with a nice win against decidedly lesser competition, but one they desperately needed.

The Bears built a 42-25 lead midway through the third quarter, then saw the visiting Eagles start to make shots and narrow their deficit. But in the end, Cal made free throws and got the win.

Statistically, the Bears were something different from the norm by making only five threes. Again intersecting with the good and bad theme, they did turn it over 26 times. But while others struggled to shoot it, Onyiah did not. Her 9 for 13 effort from the floor, carried Cal, and was ably supported by Marta Suarez who contributed 18 points and nine rebounds.

Cal enjoyed a healthy edge on the glass as well, 40-28.

T’yana Todd led Boston College with 22 points and Nene Ndiaye contributed nine points off the bench.

Cal got good news from the ACC scoreboard as Florida State and Georgia Tech suffered unexpected losses, which means those spots at the top of the conference standings that will first round byes–and double byes for the top four–are still up for grabs.

Cal (20-6, 8-5) faces Syracuse, another team looking to just solidify their position as an opening day entrant for the ACC Tournament, on Sunday at Haas Pavilion.
