That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: McCaffrey back, Samuel being evaluated; Sharks snap nine game skid with first win; plus more news

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey (left) sits with running back Jordan Mason (right) during the second half against the New England Patriots at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara on Sun Sep 29, 2024 (AP News photo)

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 On the San Francisco 49ers Christian McCaffrey doesn’t look like he has any set back and could be back. Deebo Samuel was seen wearing a oxygen mask leaving the game early talking to a doctor. Amaury no doubt the 49ers would like to see McCaffrey back and hope that Samuel is feeling better both are looking forward to the bye week this weekend.

#2 At some point the San Jose Sharks had to finally end their nine game losing streak and they pulled it off on Monday defeating the Utah Hockey Club in overtime 5-4. The Sharks last season lost their first ten games to start last season and have to be very relieved to get in the win column.

#3 Amaury, talk about how important was it for the Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani to return for game 3 in New York after suffering from the left dislocated shoulder on a slide into second base in game 2 in LA.

#4 In the US the World Series is pulling a TV viewership of 16 million plus in Japan the World Series is pulling over 15 million viewers so Ohtani has done wonders for the series viewership.

#5 Amaury talk about long time Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez who won the Roberto Clemente Award. The award is given to a player that best exemplifies off field humanitarian service in the community. Talk about Perez his hard work and work off the field and he could very well be a future candidate for a spot for the Major League Baseball Hispanic Heritage Hall of Fame Museum.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: It’s back to the drawing board for Raiders; Vegas heads to Cincinnati to face Bengals Sunday

Las Vegas running back Alexander Mattison (22) runs the ball on the Kansas City Chiefs safety Nazeeh Johnson (13) in first half action at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sun Oct 27, 2024 (AP News photo)

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria:

#1 Close game actually closer than the score the Raiders tried to keep up with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium. The Chiefs had a 17-13 lead midway in the third quarter.

#2 Up to that point in the game did it look like Raiders would be able to hold back the Chiefs it looked like the defense was working for Vegas through the third quarter.

#3 The Chiefs broke it open in the fourth quarter when the kicker Hunter Bulker booted a 24 yarder with 8:44 left to make it 20-13 so the Raiders now trailed by a touchdown.

#4 The Chiefs later would put the game out of reach with 4:59 left in the game when quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a nine yard pass to wide out Xavier Worthy for a touchdown making it 27-13. The Raiders would add another seven points when quarterback Gardner Minshew threw an 11 pass to wide out DJ Turner to make it 27-20. It was not enough at 2:03. The Raiders lose their fourth straight game.

#5 The Raiders head to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals. The Bengals have won two out of their last three games. The Bengals lost their seventh game Sunday (3-5) to the Philadelphia Eagles 37-17. With that in mind is there a chance the Raiders can bounce back and win this game in Cincinnati next Sunday?

World Series podcast with Stephen Ruderman: Yankees facing elimination in game 4 tonite; NY could be swept for 4th time in history

New York Yankees Aaron Judge head back to the dugout after striking out against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Yankee Stadium in New York in the first inning of game 3 on Mon Oct 28, 2024 (AP News photo)

World Series podcast with Stephen Ruderman:

#1 The New York Yankees pursuit of their 28th World Series title is in jeopardy as they are on the cusp of elimination after losing game 3 on Monday night at Yankee Stadium 4-2 to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

#2 If the Yankees were to lose tonight at Yankee Stadium it would be the fourth time in their history that they’ve been swept in the fall classic. Which includes loses by sweeps to 1922 to the New York Giants, the 1963 Dodgers, and 1976 Cincinnati Reds.

#3 Aaron Judge has been struggling at the plate and the Yankees pitching allowed four Dodgers runs enough for a two run win for Los Angeles. No doubt it’s the offense that the Yankees need to step up in to get back in this series as the Dodgers have been getting excellent relief help.

#4 Judge so far in the series has gone 1-12, has no RBIs to speak of and has struck out 12 times, Judge has struck out for a total of 40 times in the post season and is hitting .140.

#5 Both clubs back it again tonight in the Bronx and as Anthony Verdugo was questioning in the post game on Monday night “If that team wins three in a row, then why can’t we win three in a row?” Verdugo said.

Struggling Sharks Stun Utah HC in OT For First Win 5-4 at Delta Center

San Jose Mounts Epic 3rd Period Comeback To End 9-Game Losing Streak

By Tom Walker

SALT LAKE CITY–Monday night’s faceoff at Delta Center in Salt Lake City featured two teams badly in need of a victory. The Utah Hockey Club came into the match having lost five of their previous six games, and the visiting San Jose Sharks had lost all nine of their contests so far this season.

The Sharks snapped their nine game losing streak with a 5-4 overtime win at the Delta Center on Monday against the Utah Hockey Club. Utah has now lost six of it’s last seven games.

Inside the arena there were a fair number of teal jerseys adorned with names like Marleau, Thornton, Pavelski, Burns, and Clowe. The fans wearing them, however, might not have recognized too many of the names on the backs of the Sharks players on the ice.

Exactly 11 minutes into the opening frame, Utah forward Dylan Guenther opened the scoring with a blistering shot past San Jose goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood, assisted by captain Clayton Keller. The goal was Guenther’s sixth of the season, ending a multiple game drought for the Utah sniper.

At 16:24 of the first, Utah forward Matias Maccelli netted his first goal of the season, assisted by Ian Cole and Nick Schmaltz, extending the lead to 2-0 going into the period break.

About halfway into the second period, San Jose forward Fabian Zetterlund found the back of the net to get the Sharks onto the scoreboard and cut the deficit in half, assisted by Danil Gushchin and Henry Thrun.

Moments later, Utah regained their two-goal lead as Matias Maccelli netted his second of the game, assisted by Ian Cole and Vladislav Kolyachonok. With 24 seconds left in the period, Utah defenseman Mikhail Sergachev found a hole through traffic and increased Utah’s lead to 4-1 with his first goal of the season, assisted by Vladislav Kolyachonok and Logan Cooley.

For most of the 3rd period, the two squads exchanged chances as both goaltenders kept opposing offenses at bay. With five minutes remaining in regulation, headlines had already been written about San Jose’s ten game losing streak and how long the agony might continue. On the ice, however, there was time still left on the clock and the Sharks feverishly went to work closing the gap.

Fabian Zetterlund began the comeback at 15:28, narrowing Utah’s lead to 4-2 with his second goal of the night, assisted by Mikael Granlund and Jake Walman. Just 25 seconds later, Mikael Granlund cut the deficit to 4-3, assisted by Jake Walman and William Eklund.

Finally, a minute and twenty five seconds later, Tyler Toffoli tied things up with his fifth goal of the season, assisted by Jake Walman and Alex Wennberg. Altogether the three-goal surge took just one minute and fifty seconds overall, and the 3rd period came to a close with the score tied 4-4.

At 1:19 of the overtime period, Utah’s Michael Kesselring committed a hooking penalty against William Eklund, giving the Sharks a 4-on-3 advantage. Just seven seconds later, Alex Wennberg capitalized on the power play, stunning the Utah crowd and giving San Jose its first victory of the season while Utah has now lost six of their past seven contests.

Utah Hockey Club head coach André Tourigny was asked how to explain the last five minutes of the game. “I can’t. Let’s give them credit, they put pucks in the net, they got their bones. The way we played in the third period, it’s tough to explain. We stopped putting pressure. We let them play with the puck. We let them make plays. We stopped defending like we can do, and the puck ended up in the back of our net.”

When asked whether the breakdown was mental or physical, Tourigny responded, ”No, it’s mental. It’s 100% mental. It started with a turnover in the neutral zone, then they got two scoring chances out of it, and then the faceoff in our zone, they pulled their goalie, they scored off that play, and it’s a snowball effect from there.” So how does Utah HC move on? ”I think first before moving on, I think we need to, we need to unpack that. That’s not who we are. That’s not who we want to be. It’s [not how we want to play] in front of our fans. Give credit to San Jose, but like I said, that’s not who we want to be. You have that kind of a lead, it’s not the way we want to play, it’s not who we want to be.”

In the visitors’ locker room, San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky described his his first NHL win. “Relief, I think, was the biggest thing. Look, I didn’t really do much. The players–credit to them. They stuck with it. There were times we did some really, really good things and just didn’t get rewarded for it. But we stuck with it. We just kept playing. That’s got to be our mindset; we’re never going to give up.”

Speaking of Fabian Zetterlund’s impact in the game, Warsofsky commented, “He does that a lot of the time; he’s vocal on the bench, he’s keeping our guys engaged, he works extremely hard. For him to get rewarded with that goal was nice. That’s how he needs to play every single night. I think he had one of his best games tonight.”

Continuing to comment about Zetterlund’s productivity, Warsofsky added, “He hasn’t complained once. Just puts his head down and goes to work. That’s what we need. He’s done some really good things. I think there’s a whole other level he can get to. And we’re going to keep pushing him. We’re challenging him to get there. He’s been good for us.”

San Jose’s head coach spoke of the team having its faith rewarded. “That’s what we said after the second period: whoever plays the simplest is going to have the most success in the third period. I can’t tell you if we’re going to win or lose the game, but I think we’ll have the most success. I think we kept our game extremely simple, North-South, hard puck plays, we got pucks to the net. We just stuck with it. Credit to the guys.”

Does winning feel good? “(There’s) relief and belief. We got a group of guys (in the locker room) that are going to believe a lot more now. That’s what this is all about. When you go into sporting events, you’ve got to believe that you can win a hockey game. No matter what the situation is, you can believe. And…it’s not just a feeling. It’s in your mind, it’s in your heart, it’s in your soul…We can get that going here.”

Sharks forward Alexander Wennberg also spoke with media after the game. “Obviously, you can’t go too long without winning. It’s been tough for sure. But at the end of the day, this is what we’ve been talking about–show character. We were down 4-1 and found a way to win the game. It was a really great effort. At the end of the day, you don’t say how you win, you’ve just got to win the game. Obviously right now, it’s a good feeling. Amazing. But here’s the thing: there’s a game tomorrow as well. Obviously, we’re going to enjoy this. It’s a lot of good things. But we’re back at it again tomorrow. For the (win-loss) record, you’ve got to win games. But for us, there’s a lot of good things. Obviously, we’re shooting a lot more pucks, creating chances and (won) the game. But there’s a lot of good things, goaltending and everything. A lot of good things to build on. This is what we’ve been talking about. We just have to stay consistent and do that every game.”

Tyler Toffoli, who scored the game-tying goal, commented, “I think that we played a really good game overall. I think we had really good opportunities. Just a couple unfortunate bounces and we were down. I don’t think we needed to, technically, score those goals and the end of the game with how we played. I think we just have to keep building off it. Obviously, it feels great. It’s one of those things that we talk about, even when we weren’t winning games, to be consistent with our game. We play tomorrow.” With regard to his goal, Toffoli added, “Like the other ones, just getting shots through. We have plays drawn up and spots to be. That’s where I was supposed to be and (the puck) came right to me.”

Fabian Zetterlund was asked when he started to believe in the comeback. “Probably after I scored my second goal. We saw a chance. I don’t know how much time was left…We saw an opportunity and we just believed. We went out there, stuck to our plan and had fun. It went real well.”

The Sharks hope to build upon Monday night’s win as they return home to face the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.

Utah will attempt to get back on track with a home game against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday.

Kings Dominate Trail Blazers in first win of season, Flexing Their Potential 111-98

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings kicked off their first season win with flair, cruising to a commanding 111-98 win over the Portland Trail Blazers at the Golden 1 Center on Monday night.

From tip-off to the final buzzer, the Kings ran the show, never trailing and making an early statement that they’re a team to keep on your radar this season. With a mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars, Sacramento gave fans a preview of the exciting potential that lies ahead.

The Kings came out strong in the first quarter, outpacing Portland 25-20. Domantas Sabonis set the tone early, dominating the boards and orchestrating the offense. Sabonis flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 16 points, 13 rebounds, and 7 assists. New addition DeMar DeRozan, picked up in the offseason, looked right at home in Sacramento’s system. He led all scorers with 23 points, drawing fouls at will and sinking 9 of 10 free throws.

The third quarter proved to be the turning point. Sacramento exploded with a 21-4 run, transforming a close game into a one-sided affair. Sabonis ran the show from the high post, while Keegan Murray knocked down timely buckets to stretch the lead to 24 points. Portland had no answers, getting outscored 38-28 in the third as the Kings locked in and put the game out of reach.

Portland’s rookie guard Scoot Henderson flashed his potential with 18 points, five assists, and four rebounds, but he lacked the consistent support needed to mount a serious challenge. Deandre Ayton made his presence felt with 20 points and 11 rebounds, but their efforts weren’t enough to stop Sacramento’s well-balanced attack.

Kings head coach Mike Brown praised his team’s all-around effort, saying, “The way we shared the ball and played for each other tonight is exactly the kind of energy we need.”

On the other side, Blazers coach Chauncey Billups acknowledged the growing pains with his revamped squad. “Sacramento had us on our heels all night. That run they made was the difference; we’ve got to learn how to respond better,” Billups said.

With their first win in the books, the Kings aim to carry this momentum into tougher games ahead, signaling they’re ready to build on last season’s playoff success. As for the Blazers, they’ll head back to Portland looking to regroup and smooth out the wrinkles in their lineup as their new-look squad takes shape.

San Francisco 49ers Top Dallas 30-24; Win is second in last four games for SF

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (13) takes a leap of celebration after scoring a touchdown with tight end George Kittle (85) and guard Dominick Puni (77) in the second half at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara on Sun Oct 27, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The San Francisco 49ers(4-4) had a slow start in the first half of their game with the Dallas Cowboys (3-4) trailing 10-6 after two quarters. The 49ers came alive in the second half scoring three touchdowns in the third quarter taking a 27-10 lead.

The Cowboys surged in the fourth quarter and with 3:32 left in the game the score was 30-24 in favor of the 49ers. San Francisco held on and was able to win this game and reach the five hundred mark with a 4-4 record.

Game recap: The first quarter highlighted two teams that are very evenly matched. The only score that came out of the opening quarter was a San Francisco field goal. 49er kicker Anders Carlson put the only points on the board in the first quarter, a 50 yard field goal and a 3-0 San Francisco lead.

After a slow start, the Cowboys scored twice in the second quarter. Ezekiel Elliot scored a touchdown rushing for a yard and the score giving Dallas a 7-3 lead at 10:58. The Cowboys would follow that up at 2:56 with a Brandon Aubrey 29 yard field goal extending the Dallas lead to 10-3.

San Francisco would cut that lead to 10-6 when Anders Carlson kicked a 44 yard field goal. With 54 seconds left in the second half, San Francisco had possession and the opportunity to either cut the Dallas lead or possibly take the lead.

Both of these teams are coming off disappointing losses last week and the play in the first half show-cased some highly competitive play. With 34 seconds left on the clock the 49ers had driving into Dallas territory setting up camp on the Cowboy 46 yard line. San Francisco was unable to move the ball and was looking at a 4th and 17 with ten seconds left in the half. The score was 10-6 at halftime.

The three holding penalties in the first half of play had really hurt San Francisco. If the list of injured 49ers was not enough there was an in-game injury that was significant in the first quarter. Jordan Mason who had been doing a beautiful job in the absence of Christian McAffrey went down in the opening quarter .

Mason did jog off the field after medical attention on the field and did not enter the medical tent. He did take the field but it was brief and he eventually did exit to the locker room in the second quarter. His return is now questionable. He is suffering a should injury adding to the burden of his AC joint sprain that he has been managing for a few weeks.

The 49ers wasted little time to start the third quarter. They scored a touchdown at 12:57 in the third taking a 13-10 lead. Isaac Guerendo rushed for four yards and the score. Anders Carlson made the extra point and San Francisco had a 13-10 lead.

Minutes later the 49ers intercepted a Prescott pass and San Francisco was back in business. They drove down deep into Dallas territory looking to extend their lead. They didn’t wait long as Brock Purdy connected with George Kittle for two yards and another second half 49er touchdown taking a 20-10 lead.

Dak Prescott and the Cowboys had a lot of work to do with 7:08 left in the quarter. The problem for the Cowboys was the dominating defense that San Francisco was bringing down after down. The Cowboys were having a lot of trouble moving the ball and giving possession back to the 49ers time after time.

With 1:44 left in the quarter Purdy was connecting and the running game was also on fire for San Francisco as they drove down to the Dallas ten yard line first and goal. Purdy himself took the ball into the end zone for San Francisco’s third touchdown of the third quarter and a 27-10 lead. The second half so far had been all 49ers.

The Cowboys had possession to start the fourth quarter but continued to be manhandled by the San Francisco defense. Prescott had been intercepted twice and sacked twice.

The Cowboy offense had been completely shutdown by the 49ers. With 11:57 left in the game San Francisco was again on the move but stalled out and was forced to punt when Purdy narrowly avoided an interception.

With under ten minutes in the fourth quarter the Cowboys offense got going and at 7:58 put together an impressive scoring drive. Prescott connected with a wide open CeeDee Lamb in the end zone for seven yards and their second touchdown of the game.

Trailing by the score of 17-27 the Cowboys had a lot of work yet to do. They would need an immediate stop with 7:52 left on the clock. Dallas did not get that badly needed stop allowing a San Francisco Ricky Pearsall rush for 39 yards down to the Dallas 26 yard line and any hope for a Dallas comeback had begun to dim. The 49ers were unable to find the end zone but did kick their third field goal of the game. Carlson made a 41 yard field goal extending their lead to 30-17.

Dallas refused to throw in the towel scoring with 3:32 left in the game. Prescott again connected with Lamb this time for 20 yards and we had a new ball game. San Francisco now had to protect their 30-24 lead. As it turned out, it was just too little too late for the Dallas Cowboys. The final was 30-24 and San Francisco had reached the five hundred mark with a record of 4-4.

Purdy had a phenomenal game finishing with 260 passing yards and 56 rushing yards. He had no interceptions. Running Back Isaac Guerendo finished with 85 rushing yards and receiving honors went to Kittle with 128 yards. San Francisco had finally put it all together in the second half of this game for the win.

Game notes: Sunday Night Football featured a matchup between the 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys (3-4). Both teams have struggled this season and both teams are desperate for a win. In their last game last week Sunday the Cowboys got trounced by the Detroit Lions to the tune of 47-9 and the 49ers lost in a Super Bowl rematch to the Kansas City Chiefs 28-18.

This game was a hard fought battle. Both teams had offensive weapons as well as great defenses. They were well matched and this was a great Sunday Night Football game. Both teams have talent at quarterback in the 49ers Brock Purdy and Cowboys Dak Prescott.

San Francisco has had terrible luck with injuries. Deebo Samuel was hospitalized last week with pneumonia and Brandon Aiyuk with a terrible season ending injury, a torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

The good news for the 49ers is that both Kittle and Samuel were on board for this game. Jauan Jennings remains out with a hip injury. Christian McCaffrey remains out as well and kicker Jake Moody remains out with a right ankle issue.

San Francisco is really banged up right now as are many teams across the league. These injuries can really play havoc with season outcomes. It all comes down to who is on the roster that can fight through these injuries and come out on the other side.

San Francisco will be back on the field on November 10th after a bye week in week 9. They will be taking on the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 AM PST and will be broadcast on Fox from Raymond James Stadium.
