Sporting KC dominate Earthquakes in 3-0 clean sheet

Johnny Russell had himself a night.

Sporting Kansas City’s star forward recorded a goal and an assist in his team’s 3-0 commanding shutout victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday evening at Children’s Mercy Park.

Sporting KC dominated from start to finish as it snapped its three-match pointless streak. San Jose had its four-match unbeaten streak end in its first MLS match back from an early exit in the League’s Cup.

It was another disappointing result for San Jose in their house of horrors. Their record in Kansas City is 1-16-3 dating back to 2004, including losing 10 straight from 2004-2014.

Sporting KC (7-11-8-29 points) drew first blood three minutes into the match. Russell sailed in a cross over to a wide open Dániel Sallói who buried a point-blank chance past ‘Quakes goalkeeper Daniel for his sixth goal of the season.

Russell doubled the lead for the home team in the 42nd minute. Nemanja Radoja set up Russell inside the box and the Scottish striker deked out two ‘Quakes defenders before beating Daniel with a left footed shot for his fourth goal of the season.

San Jose (9-8-8-35 points) looked flat out of the gate and weren’t able to gain any momentum in the opening 45 minutes. Sporting KC controlled possession by a 57%-43% margin and had four shots on target to zero for the Earthquakes.

Forward Matthew Hoppe made his ‘Quakes debut to start the second half when head coach Luchi Gonzalez substituted in for Cade Cowell in the 46th minute. Hoppe, who the ‘Quakes acquired on load from English Championship club Middlesbrough, sent in a nice cross to Jack Skahan in the 86th minute but Skahan’s attempt missed wide left.

Sporting KC iced the game in the 69th minute with Erik Thommy’s fourth goal of the season. Radoja recorded his second assist on Thommy’s goal.

“We have to have more pride in having a more complete game, attacking and defending the boxes. We are very disappointed in the score. It wasn’t our night. It’s done. Let’s move on and respond to the next moment, it is what this team has been doing all season. I believe they will be ready to fight again,” Gonzalez said.

San Jose’s best attempt to avoid the shutout came in the first minute of stoppage when Skahan drew a penalty kick inside the box off a foul from Logan Ndenbe. However, Carlos Gruezo right footed shot was saved by Sporting KC goalkeeper Tim Melia with a diving attempt.

Melia finished with two saves for the clean sheet. Daniel made three saves on six shots on goal.

GAME NOTES: Each team finished with five corner kicks in the match.

San Jose currently holds an 26-30-10 record against Kansas City, including an 8-23-2 record on the road.

Defender Paul Marie made his 100th career appearance for the Quakes, entering as a sub in the 67’ minute.

UP NEXT: San Jose hosts the Los Angeles Galaxy in the 98th edition of the California Classico on Wednesday 8/30 at 7:30pm at Pay Pal Park.

Raiders Finish Off Pre-Season Losing to Cowboys 31-16

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Will Grier (15) crosses the goal line for a touchdown in the second half against the Las Vegas Raiders Chris Smith II (42) and Sam Webb (27) at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Sat Aug 25, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

Saturday evening the Las Vegas Raiders traveled to Dallas taking on the Cowboys in their final pre-season game of the 2023 season. Yes it is a pre-season game but it is also vitally important to players vying for a spot in the final 53-man roster.

Up to this point NFL teams have carried as many as 90 players. The deadline for the final roster is Tuesday August 29th. This will be the day that dreams are either realized or crushed. Every player on the field Saturday night for both teams will want to put out extraordinary effort. The Raiders picked up the loss to the Cowboys 31-16 to close out the pre season schedule.

Game wrap up: The Cowboys took the lead in the first quarter 7-0. Quarterback Will Grier rushed for two yards and the touchdown. The Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson would get Las Vegas on the board in the second quarter kicking a 44 yard field goal.

Las Vegas was within striking distance trailing 7-3. Dallas distanced themselves in the second quarter scoring a second touchdown now leading 14-3. Will Grier found Luke Schoonmaker for nine yards and the score.

The Raiders found the end zone for the first time in this game at 4:38 in the second quarter. Damien Williams rushed for 24 yards and the touchdown. Las Vegas was within striking distance 14-10.

The Cowboys refused to back down continuing with a great offensive effort. Grier threw his second touchdown of the game finding Hunter Luepke for 15 yards as the first half began to wind down giving the Cowboys a 21-10 lead.

Dallas scored that touchdown with 0.50 left on the clock. Las Vegas squeezed five plays into the final 50 seconds. The sixth play of the final first half drive for the Raiders was a Daniel Carlson 62 yard field goal. This was impressive clock management from the Raiders. The half-time score was 21-13 in favor of the Cowboys.

The Raiders were able to kick a 50 yard field goal in the third quarter keeping Las Vegas in this game 21-16. Carlson was having an amazing game. Unfortunately Las Vegas would not score again in the game.

Dallas’ quarterback on the other hand was not even close to finished. Grier scored his second rushing touchdown of the game and the Cowboys were dominating this game 28-16. Dallas finished off this game with a 59 yard Brandon Aubrey field goal.

Grier had an impressive game with two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns. The Cowboys had 304 passing yards and 153 rushing yards. The Raiders did not fare well in this game. Vegas quarterback Aidan O’Connell threw for 178 yards and no touchdowns. They only had 97 rushing yards.

Newly acquired Dallas quarterback from the San Francisco 49ers Trey Lance did not get a snap under center on Saturday night. Neither Cowboys quarterbacks Dak Prescott or Lance played against the Raiders as Will Grier was under center for the entire game.

Las Vegas will kick off the regular season taking on the rival Broncos in Denver on Sunday September 10th. That game will start at 1:25 PM. The Cowboys will play on Sunday night football in New York taking on the Giants September 10th with kickoff at 5:20 PM.

Oakland’s Rally Falls Short Losing to Chicago 6-2

Oakland A’s Brent Rooker is greeted by teammates after slugging a home run in the top of the eighth inning at Guarantee Rate Field in Chicago in the third game of this four game series on Sat Aug 25, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Oakland A’s (38-91) were riding high going into Saturday’s game three against the Chicago White Sox (50-79) but came away disappointed 6-2 at Guarantee Rate Field in Chicago. They couldn’t get a third win this game Saturday and are in front in this four game series 2-1.

It was an awful start for Oakland pitcher JP Sears. He has been struggling for awhile now and the struggles continued in this game. He was not executing his pitches. He went six innings and gave up nine hits and six runs.

The White Sox got things going early scoring a single run in the first inning and followed it up with a single run in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Luis Robert Jr. scored Chicago’s first run which was followed by a home run off the bat of Lenyn Sosa.

The White Sox had a second home run in the third inning, a three-run homer from Yoan Moncada taking a 5-0 lead. They would score another run in the fifth inning and with a 6-0 lead it was all White Sox in this game so far. The A’s only had two hits through seven innings.

Oakland would finally get up on the board in the eighth inning thanks to a fielding error from Moncada. Esteury Ruiz scored on that error and so with only one out and two on base Oakland had opportunity to score a few more runs and get a rally going for the A’s.

Oakland was able to bring home another run. Jonah Bride singled Brent Rooker home for a second run and the A’s trailed 6-2 going into the bottom of the eighth.

The White Sox went three up and three out in the eighth and the A’s were looking to finish with a flurry in the ninth inning. Oakland actually went out with a whimper in the final inning but still has the chance to win the series Sunday.

A’s post game notes: The A’s had won game one of the series 8-5 Thursday night and followed that game up Friday night with an offensively brilliant game winning 12-4. Nick Allen had an amazing game in the second game of the series driving in five runs.

Oakland will wrap up the series tomorrow with Paul Blackburn on the mound with a 3-3 win/loss record and a 4.00 ERA. The White Sox will send Mike Clevinger with a 5-6 win/loss record and a 3.47 ERA.

The A’s will be looking to get back the energy they had in the first two games of this series. They will be needing to get their bats going; they will certainly need more than the four hits that they got in Saturday’s game.

Heartbreaking Loss In Louisville; Louisville City FC Defeats Oakland Roots 2-1

Practice makes perfect as the Oakland Roots go through some pre game drills before they battled Louisville City FC at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville on Sat Aug 26, 2023 (@oaklandrootssc photo)

By Troy Ewers

In the Lynn Family Stadium, the Oakland Roots faced Louisville City FC for the first time in club history and Oakland didn’t get their their third win out of the four they played this month losing in Louisville 2-1. The game started with a stalemate between both teams going back and forth with shots and saves.

We thought the stalemate was over when Louisville hits a cross to set up a header that goalie Paul Blanchette went to stop the pass and bobbled the ball into the net, but after the refs reviewed the play, no goal due to a interference that went unseen at first, because of all the fray in front of the net.

The score remained blank and the Louisville fans made their displeasure heard. That displeasure would grow louder as a minute after the goal that ended up being a no goal was called, Roots lead scorer Johnny Rodriguez grabbed his tenth league goal (11th overall) of the season when he capitalized on the lackadaisical defense of Louisville City, who were still voicing their grievances about the no goal that just happened.

1-0 Roots and Rodriguez even taunted the upset Louisville crowd as the seconds kept ticking and the whistle that signals halftime blew. The two teams went back to the locker room with two separate feelings. The Roots headed in their locker room high energy and motivated to deliver a clean sheet. Louisville City headed in their locker room deflated and on the bad side of the coin.

The second half started and wasn’t necessarily slow, but it was paced out to avoid mistakes and that was from both teams. Louisville finally got on the board in the 71st minute when Brian Ownby hit a header to the bottom left corner of the goal from an assist by Wilson Harris, 1-1.

The Roots had a major chance in stoppage time when Anuar Palaez took a confident shot, but the ball was tipped away with a beautiful save by Oliver Semmie. In the last seconds of stoppage time, Oakland stops a free kick by Louisville, but unable to clear the ball so the final whistle can sound and Louisville capitalized on this mistake.

Following a corner, Tyler Gibson got the assist with a pass to Oscar Jimenez who scored off a left footed shot for a heartbreaking end to a wild game.

Louisville wins 2-1. Louisville City had control the majority of the game and the final score reflected it. As for Oakland, they now have their sights set on Sacramento Republic FC as the Roots go back home to the east bay September 2nd.

Aces Fall to Washington Mystics 78-62

US Vice President Kamala Harris is presented with a Las Vegas Aces jersey from the Aces A’ja Wilson at the White House on Fri Aug 25, 2023 to celebrate last season’s Aces WNBA championship victory. The Las Vegas Aces (30-5) are heading into the final stretch of the regular season. They are fresh off a visit to the White House yesterday welcomed by Vice-President Kamala Harris. She led a celebration for the 2022 WNBA champions.

She was full of praise for not only the grit and determination that they showcased on the court but also the ferocious advocacy in support of colleague Brittney Griner during her detention in Russia. It was a memorable and emotional day for the team. Saturday it was back to business as the team took on the Washington Mystics (16-18) and took their fifth loss of the season losing to the Mystics 78-62.

Two minutes into the game, the Aces were finally able to get up on the board but had some ground to make up trailing 13-2 at 5:54. It was another slow start for Las Vegas. These slow starts have become uncomfortable lately, and with the playoffs just around the corner they will want to clean that up.

They want to ensure a number one seed when they do go into the playoffs. As the first quarter came to an end, the Aces had fought off the slow start. After having trailed by as much as eleven points, they now trailed by a deuce 19-17. The Mystics had applied pressure to the Aces on the interior and it was working.

At 7:18 the Aces hit the first basket of the second quarter to tie up the game at 19. They did go on a 6-0 run in the quarter but it was not at all the quality basketball that we typically see from this team.

They did lead at halftime 30-27 and had held the Mystics to an 8 point quarter but they had 13 turnovers in the half which was doing them no favors. It was not a great half for Las Vegas. The Mystics continued to control the paint and between the turnovers and missed shots, it was not a great first half for the Aces.

Neither team had players that came away from the first two quarters with double digits. It was just a slow game with inconsistent shooting from both teams. It was an interesting first half with the Aces only shooting at 33% to the Mystics 25%.

Las Vegas was at 18.8% from beyond the arc while the Mystics were 0 of 13. It was just a slow as molasses kind of game. The second half would show if the Aces could continue the second half success that they had shown all season.

The Mystics continued with the game plan that had brought so much success in the first half. After three quarters Washington held a slim lead 52-48. The Mystics had held the highest scoring team in the WNBA to under 50 points after three. Washington won the third quarter 25-18. The Aces had a single quarter to turn this game around.

At 7:38 the Mystics had a 57-50 lead and never looked back. With under five minutes left in the game, Las Vegas trailed by a significant number 63-52. The Aces couldn’t buy a bucket in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

With three minutes left in the game, Las Vegas was in trouble trailing 66-54. The final was 78-62 in favor of Washington who had everything to play for sitting in eighth place in the standings.

This was the second lowest scoring game of the season for the Aces. They had dropped a game earlier in the season to the Liberty 99-61. They are looking very vulnerable right now which is concerning. They finished with 13 turnovers and they were outscored from the field and from beyond the arc. The Mystics had a great game plan and executed it flawlessly.

Monday night Las Vegas will take on the New York Liberty as they continue to play on the road. This will not be an easy task for the team and they certainly have a lot to clean up. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM.

SAN FRANCISCO —Last night, the Giants threw their ace at the Braves and wound up in the hole. This afternoon, which they began one game behind in the race for the final NL wild card spot, San Francisco decided to play their opener-bulk pitcher-closer card, going with Ryan Walker to get things going, the 11th time they’ve done that this year.

The Giants’ record over his 10 previous openings was 7-3, but all of those three losses were in his most recent attempts. Walker pitched 1-2/3 left with two down and a runner in scoring position in the Atlanta second, trailing 1-0. Sean Manaea came on and put a damper on that threat. That auspicious start was a harbinger of worse to come, a 7-3 loss for the home team.

Atlanta chose southpaw Max Fried (4-1, 2.83 at game time) as a traditional starter. He had missed 70 games over the 90 days he was on the injured list a little over three weeks ago and had gone 2-0, 1.76. In his last start, on Sunday the 20th, he lasted 5-2/3 innings, in the Braves’ loss to the Giants, escaping with a no decision from his nine hit, three earned run outing.

Two of those nine hits went yard. Fried did a good job this afternoon, allowing two two runs, both of them earned, on six hits, one of them a home run, over six innings. He walked two and struck out eight, throwing a total of 98 pitches, 40 of which were balls.

He earned the win, which improved his won -lost record to 5-1 but raised his ERA to 2.85). Kirby Yates kept the Giants at bay in the seventh, as did Pierce Johnson in the eighth. AJ Minter allowed them a run in the ninth.

The Braves’ cleanup hitter, Matt Olson, came to the plate in the top of the first with 43 home runs and 110 runs batted in. He left it 111 RBI. Walker had fanned Ronald Acuña, Jr. and Michael Harris II before issuing a base on balls to Austin Riley. Olson’s resounding two bagger of the right field bricks brought the Atlanta third baseman home with the game’s first tally.

The Curse of the Leadoff Double prevented San Francisco from tying the score in the bottom of the next frame. JD Davis was stranded at second when all the offense the Giants could muster before the third out was a walk to Héliot Ramos.

Olson upped his RBI total to 112 in the top of the third. Acuña opened the inning with a single to right. After Harris flew out, Acuña stole third, the second time in three frames that the Braves. had pilfered a base.

Riley drew a free pass, and then Olson socked a solid single to left off his ex teammate to extend Atlanta’s advantage to 2-0. But Manaea wiggled out of the tough situation with a strikeout, a bases loading walk, and another K, which kept the game close and came, by the way, at the expense of another ex Athletic, Sean Murphy.

Wonderful Wilmer Flores made it even closer in the home third, With Austin Slater, who had led off with a walk, on first and one out, the Giants’ only .300 hitter parked an 87.3mph slider on the far side of the 391 foot sign in dead centerfield for a game tying home run. That made it 19 home runs and 48 RBI for Flores.

The orange and black threatened with two outs in their half of the fourth. Casey Schmitt sent a solid single to center and motored around to third when Luis Matos banged a double to left. Slater worked a full count, but Fried got him to swing and miss at a curve that left the contest tied at two.

That was an important missed opportunity because Riley br0ke the tie in the visitors’ fifth by smashing his 30th dinger of the year, a 402 foot no doubter to left that came off a 92.9mph four seamer. It left Riley’s bat at 111.2mph. Manea finished up fifth without suffering any further damage and retired Eddie Rosario for the first out of the Atlanta sixth before being relieved by Luke Jackson, who got the two remaining outs in the inning.

Unfortunatey for the Giants, he also surrendered a homer to center to Arcia, which stretched the Braves’ lead to 4-2. In all, Manaea had given up two runs, both earned, on three hits in 3-2/3 innings. He did not look good.

Jackson left after allowing a single to Olson in the top of the eighth, giving way to Taylor Rogers, who, in turn, passed the ball on to Jakob Junis. Junis proceeded to yield back to back singles to Osuña and Rosario. The latter’s safety drove in Olson.

Junis then plunked Murphy (a call that was challenged but upheld). Arcia hit a sac fly to left that brought in Osuña. Nicky López followed with another one, this time to right which enabled Rosario to cross the plate. Atlanta now owned the Giants, 7-2.

Why waste another arm in a lost cause? Junis returned to the mound for the visitors’ ninth. He retired the side in order. But the damage was done

The current three game series isn’t a make or break situation for Kapler’s crew, and there’s still a chance that the Giants will pull out a victory in the one game remaining in it. But it sure is beginning to look as if the only orange and black celebration in San Francisco this October will be Halloween.

The scheduled start for the nationally televised game Sunday, is 4:10. Neither team has yet tipped its hand about its pitching plans.

A’s Nick Allen & Company Top White Sox 12-4

Oakland A’s Nick Allen had a night at the plate with a home run and five runs driven in against the Chicago White Sox at Guarantee Rate Field in Chicago on Friday, August 25, 2023 (AP News photo)

While it has not been the best of seasons for the Oakland A’s (38-91), the current series against the White Sox (50-79) has been a terrific one for both the team and their fans as the A’s captured their second straight win against the White Sox clobbering Chicago 12-4 Friday night.

After beating Chicago Thursday night 8-5, Oakland really poured it on in game two of the series. Just watching these players having the time of their lives was nice to see but doing it on the road in Chicago has been something really special.

What we saw in game two was an all out effort from each and every player offensively and defensively. Neither team scored in the first inning. The A’s had a terrific second inning scoring five runs setting the tempo for this game. Lawrence Butler singled Brent Rooker home for the first run of the game.

Oakland would go on to score four more times. Nick Allen singled Tony Kemp home, followed by another single from Ryan Noda that brought in two runs and closing out the top of the second inning Zach Gelof doubled for the 5-0 A’s lead. The White Sox Lenyn Sosa hit a two-run home run and Chicago was on the board 5-2.

The White Sox got a little closer in the third inning 5-3 scoring a single run when Yoan Moncada doubled bringing Andrew Benintendi home.

Along came the fourth inning and the Allen extravaganza got underway. He singled Jonah Bride home. In the fifth inning it was Allen again with another single that brought two runners home; Kemp and Shea Langliers both scored for a 8-3 Oakland lead. The A’s would tack one more run on for a 9-3 lead. Noda grounded into a fielder’s choice and Bride scored.

Chicago kept plugging away and in the fifth inning Eloy Jimenez homered to left center, a solo shot for a 9-4 Oakland lead. The A’s did not take their foot off the pedal for the rest of the game with some outstanding offense.

The A’s got another run in the sixth inning for a 10-4 lead. Allen was not finished. He homered in the seventh inning, a solo shot which capped off an incredible evening. He drove in a career-high five runs giving the A’s their fourth win in five games.

Noda finished off the evening with Oakland’s second home run of the game also in the seventh inning. The A’s had 15 hits in the game leaving few runners stranded. This was the sixth time this season that the A’s had hit back-to-back home runs.

Besides the offense, the A’s showed off some stellar defense. Esteury Ruiz really hustled in the outfield making some impressive diving catches. He did not have a great offensive game but the defense he show-cased was equally important in this win.

The teams will meet in game three of this series Saturday evening. Oakland will be looking for a third win that will ensure a series win. JP Sears will take the mound after a rough outing in his last appearance against Baltimore in a forgettable loss 12-1.

Sears needs to better his 2-10 win/loss record and a great start would be a third win in this series for his team. The White Sox will send Touki Toussaint with a 1-6 win/loss record and a 5.30 ERA. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 PM.

49ers Electrocuted by Chargers, 23-12, After Shipping Trey Lance to Dallas

SANTA CLARA–The San Francisco 49ers (1-2) closed out the preseason with a loss to their downstate foe, Los Angeles Chargers (2-1) – after making an earlier major roster move – Friday Night in the Silicon Valley.

Brock Purdy marched his 49ers down the field on their first drive, only to have it come up empty after running back Jordan Mason fumbled into the endzone for a touchback for LA.

Drive #2 for San Francisco was a little better, as Purdy took it in for himself, scoring a five yard TD. 6-0 SF, after a missed extra point attempt. The 49ers used Purdy and two other starters for two drives.

The Chargers answered back with a 75-yard touchdown run for running back Joshua Kelley. 7-6, LA after a successful extra point, and the score stood up after the first 15 minutes. The Chargers were using second and third string players.

The second quarter didn’t have much scoring, except a 24-yard Field Goal by Chargers’ kicker Cameron Dicker. 10-6 LA, then and at the half’.

In the third, Niners’ QB Sam Darnold tossed a six-yard TD to Willie Snead IV.. After a missed two-point conversion, San Francisco led by two, 12-10.

LA’s QB, Max Duggan gave his team the lead right back with his 3-yard TD pass to Hunter Kampmoyer. 17-12, Chargers.

The Chargers followed that up with a 35-yard FG by Dicker. 20-12 LAC. That was also the score after three quarters.

The Chargers added another field goal in the fourth on the foot of Dustin Hopkins (27), and the Southern California team won by 11, 23-12.

The Niners open the 2023 Season in the Steel City to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, September 10. The Chargers will host the Miami Dolphins on the same date.

The 49ers also dealt quarterback Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys. Lance came to the 49ers three years ago for three first round draft picks. Lance’s first pre season game against the Las Vegas Raiders he was sacked four times in three offensive possessions. In spite of that he came back in pre season game number two against the Denver Broncos on Aug 19th and had shown improvement. 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan already had their minds made up about dealing Lance to the Cowboys on Friday.

Purdy won the job after Lance and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo got hurt and led the 49ers toward the post season. Sam Darnold will be the second string back up who won the job struggled to get the offense moving in the first three possessions and threw for a touchdown a six yarder to Sam Snead. Purdy was 5-9 for 73 yards against the Chargers.
