Las Vegas Oakland and Elections

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

OAKLAND–For just a moment forget about the possible relocation of the Oakland A’s to Las Vegas; more on that at the end. The Raiders now play in Las Vegas at Allegiant Stadium the most expensive stadium ever built among all the current NFL teams, Las Vegas gave the Raiders $750 million in public financing. The Vegas Golden Nights, of the NHL, who in 2018 (their inaugural season) won a conference title, also make their home in the desert.

Let’s see what’s happening in Sin City, when it comes to the world of sports.

-MLS Soccer has been planning to have a team in Nevada and recently called Las Vegas “soccer town”. The MLS is serious about having a team in Las Vegas

-NBA Mega star, LeBron James made a direct appeal to the league’s Commissioner Adam Silver and the owners about owning an NBA team in Las Vegas. The NBA is very positive of Las Vegas for a new NBA team.NBA Commissioner Adam silver said in October: “Las Vegas will make a great location one day”.’This is not imminent, but eventually (if I was a betting man) I would put some chips on the NBA playing in Las Vegas in a few years.

Other sporting events coming to Las Vegas:

1-NFL-Football: Sunday, February 5, 2023 the multi-day AFC vs NFC competition will culminate in an action-packed Flag game featuring Pro Bowl players at Allegiant Stadium. A week-long celebration of flag football.

2-Racing: The Formula 1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix, November 16-18, 2023. Where is the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix racetrack? The Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix 2023 will be held on and around the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada.

3-Superbowl LVIII. Las Vegas is scheduled to host the Superbowl LVIII on February 11, 2024 at Allegiant Stadium. Considered the biggest live sporting event in the United States every year and one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

Other Pro-Sports teams in Las Vegas. Las Vegas Aces – Basketball-WNBA, Las Vegas Aviators-Baseball, Oakland A’s AAA team, Las Vegas Knight Hawks- Pro Hockey (owned by Las Vegas Golden Knights) plays in Henderson, a suburb of Las Vegas.

Show original message Latest with the A’s new stadium. With the recent election results, the dynamics could have changed for the Oakland A’s to build their new park at Howard Terminal, Oakland and Las Vegas. Oakland will have a new Mayor and Nevada already elected a new Governor.

The Governor in Nevada plays a larger role regarding the current expansion in Las Vegas, while the situation in Oakland City Hall is still unknown. Joe Lombardo (R) a former Sheriff was elected Governor of Nevada beating Steve Sisolak(D) who was opposed to using taxpayer’s money for the construction of the A’s new park in Las Vegas.

The intentions of the new elected Governor of Nevada, Joe Lombardo are still unknown regarding the A’s. In both elections, Come January 2023 there will be new leadership in all positions from Governor to Mayors to members of city councils in Las Vegas and in Oakland. As of this article, it appears Sheng Thao will be the next mayor of Oakland, she led Loren Taylor by 680 votes in the latest ranked-choice-voting numbers by the Alameda County elections office Friday night.

But regardless of who was elected. The clock is ticking for the city of Oakland and the Athletics to hammer out a deal to move forward with the team’s planned $12 billion waterfront ballpark development by year’s end. And that year is 2022, almost Adiós. That is why there is so much pessimism about the A’s staying in Oakland.

Sellout Shootout: Kings rally late for sixth, straight win, 137-129 over the Pistons

By Morris Phillips

SACRAMENTO–The biggest week of Kings’ basketball in over a decade almost transpired without an essential conclusion: a win over the shorthanded, hapless Pistons.

Losers of all nine of their road contests, and minus three starters, Detroit didn’t get the memo or read the Kings’ storybook. Instead they came out firing, led almost the entire way, and were tenuously in control with 4:16 remaining, up 124-119.

That’s when the 17,866 in attendance turned the volume up, while Kevin Huerter and De’Aaron Fox took control on the hardwood. Fox started the final push with a dunk in transition off Huerter’s steal, then the second of Huerter’s two 3-pointers gave the Kings a 131-127 lead with 1:29 remaining.

Fox dismissed the Pistons on a jumper with 56 seconds to go, and two made free throws with 22 seconds left that sealed it. In all, Sacramento’s starting backcourt combined for 14 of the team’s final 18 points, and Fox led the Kings with 33 points, seven assists.

“He’s playing at an All-Star level. He’s doing it on the offensive end, the defensive end,” said Harrison Barnes of Fox. “It’s a credit to him and the amount of work he put in this summer.”

Huerter added 24 points, and Domantas Sabonis had 15 points, 13 rebounds as all five Kings’ starters scored at least 13 points.

The Pistons got 24 points from rookie Jaden Ivey, who was a headliner in a matchup with fellow, top 5 draft pick Keegan Murray. The Kings’ rookie started on Sunday after missing the previous game against the Spurs and finished with 13 on 4 of 10 shooting.

Marvin Bagley also got a few hits on Twitter, as a reminder that this was his first game back in Sacramento following the trade deadline deal that shipped him to Detroit. The 6’11” Bagley didn’t figure to hold up as the only true frontcourt presence for the visitors in the absence of Saddiq Bey and Isaiah Stewart, but he did. Bagley played 21 minutes and scored 11 of his 15 points after halftime. The former No. 2 overall pick for Sacramento was playing just his fifth game after missing the first 13 games of the season with a knee sprain.

The Kings six-game win streak is their first since January 2005, and the perfect complement to Tuesday’s electrifying, 153-121 win over Brooklyn on national TV that created all the buzz. Thursday’s win over the Spurs kept the party going, and Sunday’s crowd, the biggest in the history of the Golden 1 Center confirmed the fan base has taken notice.

The Kings are three games over .500 for the first time since February 13, 2019 when they were 30-27 in support of the underappreciated coaching of Dave Joerger.

With all the excitement surrounding his team, coach Mike Brown stood alone in his subdued reaction. The Pistons 61 percent shooting before halftime, and their 102 points after three quarters left a sour taste.

“We were not good at all defensively tonight,” Brown said. “We got lucky.”

WHAT HAPPENED TO TD?: Terence Davis, the first player in NBA history to notch at least 30 points, seven rebounds, seven 3-pointers and three steals on 70-percent shooting from the field in a single game barely played on Sunday.

Davis wasn’t hurt, just not needed in the minds of the Kings’ coaching staff. Davis’ record night was Tuesday against the Nets. Then on Thursday he scored five points in 15 minutes against the Spurs. And on Sunday, with Murray back in the starting lineup, Davis sat the entire first half, and played just three minutes in the third quarter. He finished with three points.

Do the Kings have quality depth? Apparently so.

Warriors Win First Road Game Against Young Rocket Team 127-120

Warriors Win First Road Game Against Young Rocket Team 127-120

Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson led the way with ten threes and 41 points in the Warriors first road win of 2022-23 in Houston on Sun Nov 20, 2022 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

Sunday the Golden State Warriors (8-9) took on the Houston Rockets (3-14) finally picked up their first road win of the season. The Rockets are a young team that the Warriors handled in Houston. Houston with the exception of Eric Gordon is an extremely young bunch of players that just do not have the experience and depth that the Warriors have. Golden State came away with a 127-120 win in this game.

The Warriors came out on a blistering pace leading after the opening quarter 40-28. The Warriors led 11-0 in the first quarter before the Rockets even scored. Golden State led by as much as 18 points in the first 12 minutes.

The second quarter was a tale of two quarters. The Rockets turned this game around and erased the Warriors lead and led at the half 65-61. Houston is not a great offensive team and the Warriors were not taking advantage of that. Golden State’s defensive effort was lacking and they were sending the Rockets to the line far too often.

On the bright side, Klay Thompson was great with 25 points in the first half. After the great start that the Warriors had this game had turned into a real shocker. Golden State would need to turn things around in the second half.

The Warriors got back on track and the Rockets youth and inexperience started to weight on Houston. They got sloppy and started missing shots partially due to the Warriors defensive effort. Golden State led after three quarters 97-94 and were twelve minutes away from their first road win.

The youngsters started the fourth quarter while Stephen Curry and Thompson sat out. The Rockets tied up the game at 104 with 6:59 left in the game. The Warriors had been really good from distance in this game and they also starting forcing a lot of Houston turnovers.

It was nice to see some Rocket turnovers since the Warriors had been having a heap of turnovers themselves in this game. With 2:35 left in the game the Warriors were clinging to a three point lead. Golden State hung on and the Warriors had their first road win 127-120. The drought had come to an end.

It was a banner night for Thompson who had his first thirty plus game of the season finishing with 41 points. He was 10 of 13 from downtown. Curry had 33 and Andrew Wiggins finished with 22. The young Rockets sure gave the Warriors a run for their money but came up short.

Monday night the Warriors will take on the New Orleans Pelicans in the Big Easy at Smoothie King Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM.

Carr-Adams Connection Beats Denver In Overtime 22-16

Carr-Adams Connection Beats Denver In Overtime 22-16

By Barbara Mason

Sunday afternoon two teams that have been struggling all season met at Empower Field at Mile High. The Las Vegas Raiders (3-7) traveled to Denver to take on the Broncos (3-7). The Raiders have quarterback Derek Carr and while not a top ten quarterback, he does fall between 11 and 16th so he is in the top half of the league.

The Broncos have a top ten quarterback in Russell Wilson but his team has still struggled this season. The Raiders ended their three-game skid with a 22-16 win and Denver has lost five of their last six games.

The Raiders have been competitive in most of the games they have lost this year, in fact six of their seven losses were one score games. Derek Carr has struggled without tight-end Darren Waller and wide receiver Hunter Renfrow both out with injury. He does have star wide receiver Davante Adams. He obviously cannot target Adams every time he throws the ball and the Broncos defense ranks second in the league so the Raiders face a mighty challenge.

The Broncos scored first in this game, a touchdown and that would be the only action either team would see in the first quarter. Former Raider Latavius Murray rushed for one yard giving Denver a 7-0 lead.

The Broncos would extend their lead in the second quarter 10-0. Denver kicker Brandon McManus kicked a 48 Yd field goal at 9:19. With 5:36 left in the half Las Vegas quarterback Derek Carr found Davante Adams for 31 yards, the touchdown and a Daniel Carlson extra point. Las Vegas was within striking distance trailing 7-10.

The Raiders tied up the game in the third quarter 10-10. Daniel Carlson kicked a 52 Yd field goal and Las Vegas was back in business.

It all came downs to the fourth quarter in a very close match-up. Denver took the lead to start the quarter, at 14:56; a McManus 52 yard field goal and a 13-10 Bronco lead. With eight minutes left in the game the Raiders were threatening in this three-point game. Josh Jacobs was shouldering all the ground work carrying the ball 23 times for 110 yards. The Raiders knotted up the game with a career- best 57 yard field goal from Daniel Carlson. It was all tied up at 13.

After that Raider field goal the Broncos mounted a drive that put them into field goal range. McManus kicked a 48 yard. field goal to break the tie 16-13. The Raiders had some work to do with 3:30 left on the clock. Las Vegas went three and out. The Broncos would now try to run the clock out on this game.

The Broncos needed a single first down to seal the win and could not come up with it. The Raiders had less than two minutes to either tie up this game or win it. Derek Carr found Josh Jacobs for 43 yards with 0:57 left in the game. Carlson would kick a 25 yard field goal to tie up this game at 16. The Broncos had 0:07 to get within field goal range. This game would go into overtime.

The Raiders won the toss and would start their second overtime this year. It could not have been a more dramatic finish in this game. In a beautifully designed play Derek Carr found Davante Adams open for 35 yds and the game-ending touchdown. Las Vegas came away with the win.

This game had its ups and downs for Vegas but they pulled it all together when it really counted. Carr finished 23 of 37 for 298 yards and two touchdowns. Josh Jacobs carried the ball 24 times for 109 yards and had 51 yards receiving.

Carr was able to find seven receivers in this game. Adams had seven receptions for 141 yards. Las Vegas finished this game with 307 receiving yards. The Raiders were pressed and had to go the distance but they persisted and it paid off against a very tough Bronco defense.

Next up for the Raiders next Sunday will be the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:05 PM PT.

The shots at the the end of the second period also favored San Jose at 16-7.

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 How important was it for the San Francisco 49ers to practice this past week in Colorado Springs before playing above sea level in Mexico City on Monday Night Football.

#2 The 49ers are noted for building drafts which had players that had injuries previously like Javon Kinlaw, Kavon Alexander, or getting Dee Ford in a trade.

#3 Could the 49ers sign wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham 30 could be somewhat of a liability who is recovering in his ninth month from his second surgery from torn left ACL.

#4 The situation is shaky at the cornerback position Jason Varrett is out for the season, linebacker Samuel Womack sat for the second street week, Ambry Thomas has had his share of injuries and needing rest.

A goal by Julien Gauthier late in the third period broke a scoreless tie, eventually helping the New York Rangers earn a 2-1 win over the San Jose Sharks Saturday at SAP Center.

It was the Rangers’ third win in their last five games, going 3-1-1 in that span.

Gauthier lit the lamp with 6:03 remaining in the third period, tipping a shot by Jacob Trouba from the point and steering it past Sharks goaltender James Reimer. It was Gauthier’s third goal of the season.

With Reimer pulled in favor of a sixth attacker, Adam Fox picked up an empty-net tally at 18:53, giving the Rangers a 2-0 lead.

Logan Couture scored for the Sharks at 19:43, breaking up Igor Shesterkin’s bid for a shutout. Couture was positioned at the right of the crease, where he took a pass from Tomas Hertl and beat Shesterkin with a wrist shot for his ninth goal.

Former San Jose forward Barclay Goodrow of the Rangers made his first appearance at SAP Center since the Sharks traded him to Tampa Bay in February of 2020. And Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro reached the personal milestone of 200 NHL games played.

The Sharks host the Ottawa Senators on Monday nigh for a 7:30 pm.
