Who’d a thunk it? The San Jose Earthquakes going to the MLS is Back Tournament they started out so well and lost a tough game by tournaments end to get eliminated although they had made it to the quarterfinals. The Quakes showed they can compete but after the tournament and getting back to regular season travel and playing in San Jose things started to fall apart.

With the 7-1 loss on Thursday night to the Seattle Sounders it was the Quakes worse loss in their franchise history and it dropped them to last place in the Western Conference (2W-4L-3D) it also marked the most goals surrendered by any MLS team in history in nine matches for the regular season.

Quakes head coach Matias Almeyda faced the media after the humiliating loss saying, “In this restart of the regular season we’re really doing bad,”  Almeyda told the media at Centurylink Stadium post game “When we had reached a level to be competitive [in Orlando] it’s because defenders, midfielders and attackers played the same way. And today there was not a defender, midfielder or attacker who has played better than the others. The coach, and that’s me, and the team played really poorly and we have to get ourselves out of this.”

The Sounders were a very prepared team and the last time the Quakes faced them that was in the bubble in Orlando and the game finished in a 1-1 draw. But at Centurylink a whole different futbol game. The Sounders dominated from start to finish and that is something Quakes star Chris Wondolowski had a hard time with following the game saying the Quakes are being punished and rightfully so when things are not getting done, “I think we need to execute the game plan. That’s the biggest difference,” Wondolowski said. “When you play unselfish, some special things happen. When it doesn’t, it’s a fine line between the haves and have-nots, especially in this league. Right now we’re getting punished, and rightfully so, and it’s not good enough all across the board.”

The Quakes return home for their next match on Sun at 8:00 pm on Sep 13th at Avaya Stadium they host the LA Galaxy and will try to get into the regular season win column. The Quakes have one draw and three ties in the regular season.
