Sharks buried by Avalanche 4-0

~ Colorado broke their four-game losing streak big, matching those games with goals in a shutout over San Jose Thursday.

The Sharks meanwhile continued on a four-game road streak slide and ended a seven-game streak of scoring at least two goals. They last went scoreless on the last day of December.

It was the Avalanche’s first shutout since November 12 and goalie Philipp Grubauer’s first of the season.

Sharks’ defenseman Brent Burns did not mince words postgame, “…vicious cycle of getting behind and trying not to make mistakes, not helping the next guy. Tough to play when you’re nervous…an unacceptable game.”

Martin Jones returned to action for San Jose after last goaltending January 5 and faced 38 shots. He stayed in net the whole game and was able to keep Colorado off the board in the third.

San Jose went down at least 2-0 for the second game in a row. The Avalanche accomplished this by scoring a pair of goals in each of the first two periods, two via the faceoff which they won by a 63.2% to 36.8% clip. No one player stood out this time, but instead the points were spread out between eight players.

In the first, it was a tale of two ends as the Sharks were caught at the start and finale of the stanza.

Colorado took 45 seconds and one shot to cash in their first prize. They won the puck direction as Valeri Nichushkin grabbed the loose puck in the neutral zone. Burns slid in to defend when it got to San Jose’s zone, but Nichushkin was able to play keepaway and obtain the 1-0 score.

In between goals, Jones stopped a breakaway by Mikko Rantanen and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare off a 2-on-1.

At 19:53, Cale Makar took the puck from Nazem Kadri off a faceoff win, skated left and rang the bell through traffic, as the puck deflected three seconds before intermission.

Action settled down between the pipes in the second until almost the 10-minute mark but in the end, the Avalanche increased their margin by two more goals and two more shots.

Ryan Graves’ 3-0 goal mimicked the previous one in that it came right off the faceoff and went through traffic, but it was cleaner and quicker.

The Sharks had a bit of life when they got a power play opportunity at 11:53. Joe Thornton hit the post during the advantage, but eventually things turned sour again with a shorthanded score. After Barclay Goodrow was pinched going into the zone, Matt Calvert went on a breakaway, as he raced to the loose puck in the neutral zone and put the puck in net around Jones before crashing into him.

In the third, Goodrow hit the post shorthanded when Brenden Dillon was in the box at 13:33.

Things came to a head at 15:43 when Kadri and San Jose’s Timo Meier received 10-minute misconducts and Colorado’s Gabriel Landeskog got a two-minute roughing. The Sharks’ Evander Kane was whistled for interference a minute later, speculation his act was for a hit to Joe Thornton’s back by Nikita Zadorov in the opening half of the first.

Up Next: San Jose will try to cap their road trip and start off the All-Star break with a win Saturday in Vancouver versus the Canucks at 7pm.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Sign Stealing Scandal–Carlos Beltrán steps down as Mets manager

Sign-Stealing Scandal: Carlos Beltrán Steps Out as Mets Manager

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Amaury Pi-González

Major League Baseball continues reeling from the current sign-stealing scandal. Truly unprecedented. Seriously jeopardizing his possible induction into the Hall of Fame after a brilliant 20 years major league career, Carlos Beltrás who was named manager of the New York Mets on November 1,2019, will not manage with the Mets this season.

Beltrán is 42 years old born in Manatí,Puerto Rico. After what has been happening, especially with the Houston Astros,Carlos Beltrán today decided to step down as manager of the New York Mets. This is makes the Mets management who picked Beltrán look very bad, overall nobody is looking good at this time in the game. Beltrán will not manage a single game in Spring Training which is just over two weeks away.

Beltrán played for 20 seasons in major league baseball compiling Hall of Fame worthy numbers, 2,586 games, hit .270 with 435 home runs and 1,587 runs batted in. Began his career in 1998 and ended in 2018, he played for: Kansas City Royals, Houston Astros, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants, St Louis Cardinals, New York Yankees,Texas Rangers and Houston Astros (again) during the 2017 season when the Astros defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.

Jessica Mendoza,ESPN Baseball Analyst and who also works for the NY Mets blasted Mike Fiers, now pitching with the A’s, and ex-Astros for blowing the whistle on this current scandal.

Personally, I cannot blame a pitcher for blowing the whistle on hitters stealing signs. This goes to the essence of the game of baseball, where the pitchers objective is to get the hitter out. Hitters today have the definite advantage, with all the videos and stuff on film and social media, now.

There will always be the gamesmanship in some situations like when a runner at second base can relay a signal to the hitter, and that will always belong in the game, but methodically establishing a system to steal signs should never be allowed.

Follow us with this very fluid story, in my lifetime (including the steroids era) this is the worst scandal.

See you in Arizona, in Spring Training. But I am afraid this story is still in the top of the 7th.

For the first time in 15 years, Stanford has won a men’s basketball game at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

Tyrell Terry scored a career-high 24 points for the Cardinal in their 74-59 Pac-12 victory over UCLA Wednesday. It was Stanford’s first win over the Bruins at Pauley since 2003-04, and its first conference road win of the season.

Terry was 6 of 13 from the field, including 4 of 7 on 3-pointers. He was also 8 of 10 at the free throw line.

Spencer Jones added 14 points for the Cardinal (15-2 overall, 4-0 Pac-12), which has won three straight conference games, and eight of their last nine.

Leading the Bruins was Jaime Jaquez Jr. with 15 points, followed by Jalen Hill with 14 points and 12 rebounds. The Bruins (8-9, 1-3) are in the midst of their second three-game losing streak of the season.

UCLA had won 13 straight home games against Stanford since 2005-06.

After the Bruins closed to within one point early in the second half, Stanford went on a 12-2 run to go up 50-39.

The Cardinal’s Oscar da Silva – who was averaging 16.5 points – scored only six points, plagued by four personal fouls.

Stanford opened the game with an 18-9 run, connecting on 7 of 10 shots while the Bruins missed seven of their first 10 attempts.

But UCLA put together runs of 9-0 and 11-0 to take its first lead at 29-22. At one point during the 20-4 scoring run, the Bruins had seven different players score.

The Cardinal regrouped and forged an 11-2 run to end the first half leading 33-31.

Stanford shot 51 percent (24-47), including 8-17 on 3-pointers. UCLA made 21 of 53 field goals (39.6 percent) and was 5 of 16 behind the arc.

Stanford continues its road trip on Saturday, visiting Southern California.

Kings just couldn’t get to finish line Mavericks win it 127-123

@Sportsnet photo: The Dallas Mavericks Luka Doncic was hard to contain as he and the Mavericks rains buckets on the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night at Golden One Center in Sacramento

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SRS Kings beat writer

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings continued to be mire in the mist that is mediocrity. Just when you think they are turning a corner they have a puzzling defeat that puts them back at square one.

The Kings were hoping to flip the script against an opponent they beat on the road last month, the Dallas Mavericks. It was set to be the showdown of Luka Doncic and Marvin Bagley both of whom were picked high in the draft two seasons ago. The tip-off was set for 7 PM PST at Golden One Center.

In the first quarter, the Kings got a strong showing from Buddy Hield. Trying to put his early-season struggles behind him, Buddy was in double figures in the first with ten points. However, the Mavericks managed to take the early lead on 55.6% shooting 35-31. Maxi Kleber was the leading scorer for the Mavs with eight points.

In the second quarter, The Kings kept things close. The Kings scored 36 points in the second but it wasn’t enough to take the lead. The Mavs added 36 as well to keep the game right where it started in the second at a four-point Kings deficit 71-67. The games leading scorers to this point were Buddy Hield and Seth Curry who both had 16 points. The Kings would look to keep up the pace on defense to contain the Mavs offense.

In the third quarter, The Kings had a familiar occurrence take place. That is the third-quarter meltdown. The Mavs outscored the Kings 37 to 26 in the third to make it a 108-93 game. The Kings looked defeated. The Kings defense had let them down in a big way. The Mavs had scored 35, 36, and 37 points in the first three quarters. No NBA team is going to win a game with those numbers. The Kings were heading into the final session looking for a miracle.

In the final quarter, no miracle occurred in Sacramento. The Mavericks scored 19 in the fourth compared to the Kings 20 as the Mavs came away with the victory 127-123. The Leading scorers for the Kings in defeat were De’Aaron Fox with 27 points, Buddy Hield with 25 points and Harrison Barnes who put up 22. For the victorious Mavericks, it was Luka Doncic who had 24 points to go along with 17 assists and 15 rebounds. The Kings are now 15-26 on the season and are running out of excuses.

They are about to embark on a long road trip that will really test this team’s resolve to stay in the hunt this season.

Up Next: The Kings head out on the road to take on the Utah Jazz on Saturday at 6 PM PST. The Kings won’t return home until January 29th.

Barracuda power past Eagles 7-2, snap two game skid

sjbarracuda.com photo: The score says it all as the San Jose Barracuda broke it wide open against the visiting Colorado Eagles at SAP Center on Wednesday night

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE, Calif- The San Jose Barracuda’s power play had been colder than an afternoon kickoff in December at Lambeau Field. It warmed up at the right time as San Jose scored three unaswered goals, two on the power play, in the second period and then put the game away with four unaswered in the third period to defeat the Colorado Eagles 7-2 on Wednesday evening at SAP Center.

With the win, the ‘Cuda snapped a two game losing streak and concluded their four-game homestand with a 2-2 record. Colorado is 2-3 in its last five games.

Colorado (19-12-3-1) drew first blood late in the first period. A.J. Greer centered a pass from beind the net over to the right slot where Shane Bowers skated in and snapped a wrist side to the short side past ‘Cuda goalie Josef Korenar for his seventh goal at the 13:42 mark. Sheldon Dries received the secondary assist and leads the Eagles in points with 26.

The Eagles could have been up 3-0 after the opening 20 minutes as Michael Joly hit the post after a chance off a turnover. And Martin Kraut’s short-handed breakaway chance ended with him shooting the puck to wide left of the net.

San Jose (13-20-0-2) had one good chance on the power play to even the score from Noah Gregor who skated in a mini-breakaway. His backhand shot was gloved by Eagles goalie Adam Werner. The ‘Cuda outshot Colorado 14-7.

The Barracuda scored the equalizer to open up the second period. Dylan Gambrell poked the puck over to Noah Gregor in the ‘Cuda zone. Gregor then flashed his speed as he raced down the ice and around Eagles defenseman Jacob MacDonald. The Edmonton native skated in on Werner and chipped the puck top-shelf for his sixth goal of the season at the 3:50 mark.

San Jose gained its first lead on their third power play opportunity with a pretty tic-tac-toe goal. Trevor Carrick sent a pass from the point over to the right to Maxim Letunov and he quickly sent a cross ice pass over to the left slot where Jayden Halbegwchas  sniped it past Werner for his 13th goal of the season at the 8:19 mark. The power play tally snapped an 0/13 skid with the man advantage for the ‘Cuda.

“We talked about getting to the net a little more. I thought we did that tonight in the second and third (periods). Other than that I just liked our energy. I was happy with our effort,” said co-head coach Jimmy Bonneau.

The Barracuda made the Eagles pay for their fourth trip to the sinbin. A failed clearing attempt riccocet over to a wide open Carrick at the point. The ‘Cuda defenseman blasted a rocket past Werner on the far side for his eighth goal of the season at the 10:11 mark.

“It’s weird. It’s just been coming in waves for me this season,” said Carrick regarding scoring goals in back-to-back games and three in his last five. “Haven’t really changed a whole lot. Just been throwing the puck at net and they just happen to be going in.”

Colorado cut the deficit to a one-goal game in the first five minutes of the third period. T.J Tynan skated into the ‘Cuda zone near the right boards. He fed a drop pass back to the point where Mark Alt wired a slapshot past Korenar for his third goal of the season at the 4:09 mark.

San Jose regained their two-goal lead over two minutes later. Jacob Middleton sent a long pass from inside his own zone up to Jeffery Viel that sprung Viel on a breakaway. He skated in getting hooked on a delayed penalty call and sneaked through a shot past the 5-hole of Werner for his sixth goal of the season at the 6:26 mark.

The ‘Cuda blew open the game when Evan Weinger sent Halbgewachs on a breakaway. The 5’9″ foward made a quick move before burying the puck top-shelf in the upper left corner for his team-leading 14th goal and second of the game at the 9:56 mark.

Halbgewachs surpassed his career mark in goals in just 36 games. He ended his rookie campaign with 13 last season.

“That’s kind of my job. I gotta find ways to score each and every game. The goal for me right now is to find little ways to produce and make things happen offensively on the ice as well as play sound defensively,” said Halbgewachs.

San Jose scored the touchdown when a Nick DeSimone shot went wide of the net. Nick Meloche pinched down from the point and threw the puck into the middle of the crease where a crashing Alex True tapped the puck past Werner for his 11th goal of the season at the 13:50 mark.

The Barracuda closed out the scoring 40 seconds later. A faceoff win by Gambrell back to the point led a to a Jeremy Roy shot that Gambrell tipped as the puck rattled off both goal posts and into the back of the net for his first goal of the season at the 14:30 mark. Weinger was credited with an assist for a two-point night.

Korenar (8-13-2) made 23 saves on 25 shots to earn his 8th win of the sseason. Werner (13-6-1) stopped 32 of the 39 shots he faced in suffering the loss.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 2-for-5 on the power play. Colorado was 0-for-5.

Letunov recorded two assists giving him his team leading 20th on the season. He also leads San Jose in points with 28.

Bowers has scored a goal in three straight games.

Colorado’s five-game road point streak was snapped with the loss.

The announced attendance was 2,143.

UP NEXT: The Barracuda travel out to Iowa in their first non-conference mathup of the season to take on the Wild on Friday 5:00pm at the Wells Fargo Arena.

Packers and 49ers tangle for NFC title, trip to Super Bowl LIV

ninerswire.com file photo: San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will match up against Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rogers in the NFC Championship at Levis Stadium on Sun Jan 19

SANTA CLARA, Calif — For the second time this season, the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers will meet at Levi’s Stadium for a game. But this time, there’s much more at stake for both teams than just a win in the standings.

To the victor, the NFC Championship and a ticket to Super Bowl LIV in Miami, Florida for a chance to play for the Vince Lombardi trophy against the winner between the Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs from the AFC will be punched.

First class.

To the loser, the harsh reality that your season is over smacks you in face immediately.

Instead of basking in the glow of winning the NFC Championship, you’ll return to your team’s headquarters to clean out your locker room, hug your teammates (possibly for the last time as teams change rapidly in the NFL each year), and go your separate ways for the offseason.

The end.

In the first matchup back in Week 12, the Packers took a beating at the hands of the 49ers, losing 37-8 at Levi’s Stadium. The Packers weren’t just outplayed by the 49ers, but were embarrassed in front of a nationally televised audience on NBC’s Sunday Night Football.

49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo played almost flawlessly in that game, throwing for 253 yards on 14-of-20 passes and two long touchdown passes (a 42-yard strike to rookie wide receiver Deebo Samuel in the second quarter, and a 61-yard deep ball to tight end George Kittle).

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers had one of his worst showings of his career, finishing with 20-of-33 passes for just 104 yards — setting a record for fewest passing yards by a quarterback with at least 20 completions. His 3.15 yards per attempt is the lowest of his career.

San Francisco sacked Rodgers five times that night. Linebacker Fred Warner was all over the field, registering a team-high 11 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble against the Packers on the game’s opening moments. Warner’s performance led him to be named NFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Don’t expect a replay of Week 12 in this matchup as both teams are playing a elite levels at the most important time of the year.

Sunday’s NFC Championship Game in the South Bay, which kicks off at 3:40 p.m. PT, will feature two teams that finished 13-3 in the regular season, won the NFC West and North Division titles respectively, and earned first-round byes to open up the playoffs as the top-two seeds.

Last Saturday, top-seeded San Francisco (14-3) opened up the divisional round by dismantling the Minnesota Vikings (11-7), 27-10, in dominating fashion. It was the 49ers’ first playoff win in six years.

The returns of defensive starters, Dee Ford, Kwon Alexander and Jaquiski Tartt, San Francisco’s defense looked re-energized and ready for a big day, made life difficult for Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins, sacking him six times and limiting Minnesota’s offense to 147 yards on the day, the fewest in a playoff game in the Super Bowl era (1967).

“People keep disrespecting us. At the end of the day, all you can do is go out and execute,” said Richard Sherman, who registered his third career interception in the playoffs. “It felt good. That’s what we look like when we’re totally healthy.”

The 49ers stonewalled Dalvin Cook and the Vikings’ rushing attack, holding Minnesota to just 21 yards on 10 carries (9 carries for Cook, 1 carry for Alexander Mattison). Cook finished the game with 18 rushing yards on nine carries.

Offensively, the 49ers leaned on a punishing running game that ran right through Minnesota like Ex-Lax led by running back Tevin Coleman’s 105 rushing yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns. As a team, the 49ers ran 47 running plays and gained 186 yards on the ground.

Garoppolo, who made his first career start in the playoffs, threw a touchdown on the game’s opening drive, and mostly watched his defense wreak havoc on Minnesota for most of the game. He finished 11-of-19 passing for 131 yards.

The second-seeded Packers (14-3) was able to outlast the Seattle Seahawks, 28-23, at Lambeau Field Sunday night that advanced Green Bay to their third NFC Championship Game in six seasons.

In that game, it was a vintage performance by Rodgers with his array of throws and spectacular completions throughout the game. Rodgers and wide receiver Davante were so locked in against the Seahawks, connecting eight times for 160 yards and two touchdowns.

“It’s one of those feelings that starts to creep up in warmups, when you really feel like you’re locked in,” Rodgers said, “and I was glad it translated to the field.”

Rodgers finished 16-of-27 passing for 243 yards in his 17th postseason start, has thrown 38 touchdowns passes in the playoffs. That’s good for fifth all-time per Elias Sports Bureau.

Running back Aaron Jones found the end zone twice, while rushing for 62 yards on 21 carries.

Green Bay’s defense sacked Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson five times on the night, two apiece by linebackers Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith (no relation).

The 49ers and Packers have met in the playoffs seven times with the Packers holding a 4-3 advantage. The 49ers have won the last two playoff matchups.
