San Jose Barracuda head coach, Roy Sommer made AHL history on Saturday night in San Antonio, recording his 636th career win as the ‘Cuda toped the Rampage 4-3. The win also snapped a six-game losing streak for San Jose forcing Sommer to sit on win 635 for the past two weeks.

Sommer, now in his 18th season behind the bench as the San Jose Shark’s minor league coach tied Fred Cook as the all-time winningest coach in AHL history. He has also coached the most games at the AHL level with 1,385 under his belt. Sommer hasn’t been wanting to make too much of a big deal about the impressive record, setting his eyes more on how the team is doing in the standings, currently third in the Pacific division with 46 points in 41 games.

San Antonio jumped on the board early and often, taking a 2-0 lead within the first seven minutes of the contest thanks to goals from Brandon Gormley and Marc-Andre Cliche.

However, the Barracuda answered with four straight up their own. Three of which came on the power play, a season high total for San Jose. Ryan Carpenter scored his ninth of the season with just over six minutes remaining in the opening frame.

John McCarthy kicked started the second with a power play marker just .21seconds in. Ryan Carpenter picked up his second point of the night on McCarthy’s fifth goal of the year. Ben Smith scored his first goal as a member of the Barracuda three minutes into the third period to give San Jose a 3-2 lead.

Petter Emauleson scored the game-winning goal with six minutes remaining in the contest. Emanuelson’s sixth of the year was the only even-strengthed tally of the night for the ‘Cuda. Ben Smith also earned an assist on the goal to give him a multi-point night.

Aaron Dell stopped 23 pucks on his seventh win of the season.

Sommer hopes to become the winningest coach in AHL history, as he goes for 637 on February 4th, as the Barracuda come off of the All-Star break against the Ontario Reign.

Barracuda drop sixth straight in road defeat to Rampage

By: Eric He

photo credit: San Jose Barracuda–SJ Barracuda loses sixth straight game in San Antonio Fri Jan 29, 2016

The San Jose Barracuda could not snap out of their losing streak on Friday night, falling to the San Antonio Rampage 2-1 on the road to extend their losing streak to a season-high six games.

All of the game’s goals were scored in the first period, with the Barracuda striking first at the midway point on Ryan Carpenter’s eighth goal of the season. Carpenter tipped in a wrist shot by Patrick McNally, who recorded his first career point with an assist.

But the Rampage answered with a pair of late goals Dennis Everberg, who beat Troy Groesnick twice in a three-minute span and San Antonio took a 2-1 advantage into the second period.

After a scoreless second period, the Barracuda could not find a way to even the score in the third despite having four power plays. Rampage goaltender Roman Will stopped 29 of 30 shots to send the Barracuda to the showers with yet another loss.

The defeat yet again prevents head coach Roy Sommer from tying Fred “Bun” Cook atop the all-time wins list in the AHL. Sommer has 635 career wins, one short of Cook.

He will get another chance Saturday night when the Barracuda face the Rampage again in San Antonio.

Super Bowl 50 podcast with Joe Hawkes Beamon: Panthers Newton “stop stereotyping me” and Broncos Manning “HGH story is still garbage”

On the Super Bowl 50 podcast with Joe Hawkes today, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has had quite a year and a post season Joe takes a look at what’s expected of him during Super Bowl 50 and what he’s up against facing the Denver Broncos. Newton has compiled some real Super Bowl type numbers with 3837 yards passing, 296 completions and 35 touchdowns during the season.

Newton has been criticized for his touchdown celebrations and his on field characteristics Newton argues he’s not doing anything any different than any other NFL quarterback and wants to be treated fairly like the other quarterbacks in the league and would like the stereotyping to stop.

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has been asked about the HGH delivery to his home and his wife’s alleged involvement in that report by Al Jazeera. Manning told the media on Thursday that the story was “garbage then and it’s still garbage now”

Manning stated that he was not commenting on any “last rodeos” or “retiring” after Super Bowl 50. There has been speculation that Manning would seek out another team after the Big Game and the Houston Texans have been tossed around as one of those teams interested.

Kings Can’t Beat Short-Handed Pelicans

By Matthew T.F. Harrington

AP photo: Pelicans Ryan Anderson (33) goes up toward basket over the Kings Marco Belinelli (3) on Thursday night

The New Orleans Pelicans were without their two best players in All-star Anthony Davis and Tyreke Evans, but they still managed to defend home court at the Smoothie King Center Thursday night. Ryan Anderson scored a career-high 36 points to beat a George Karl-less Sacramento Kings 114-105.

Anderson scored 30 points in the first half to push New Orleans (17-28) to a 63-53 lead at the half despite a 34-26 second quarter by the Kings. Sacramento would pull within 5 in the 4th, but a Pelican run extinguished all hope for the Kings (20-26).

Rajon Rondo and Western Conference All-star DeMarcus did the usual, each producing a double-double. The Kings point guard picked up 15 assists, matching a franchise record with 14-straight double-digit assist contests, and 17 points. Cousins earned his double on the glass, pulling in 10 boards along with 26 points. Ben McLemore also picked up 26 points.

For the Pelicans, Jrue Holiday pitched in off the bench. He scored 25 points on 8 of 24 shooting. Norris Cole picked up a double-double for the hosts after scoring 17 points while dropping 10 times.

The Kings were without coach Karl, who missed the contest due to illness. Associate coach Chad Iske took over the coaching duties looking to end a two-game losing skid for Sacramento. There is no word who will be behind the bench when the Kings travel to Memphis Saturday.

Golden State Warriors podcast with David Zizmor: Despite all the injuries the Warriors stay hottest team in NBA

by David Zizmor

photo credit: warriorsworld.net–Festus Ezeli is one of the Warriors players whose been hampered with injuries

OAKLAND–The Golden State Warriors who have struggled with some of the injuries that they’ve had, I won’t say they were kind of dragging a bit and in January it’s the part of the season it happens a bit. Even with the best teams it could be a bit of a problem. The injuries on top of the type of year they’ve had kind of exacerbated the situation.

Even though the Warriors were still getting a lot of wins they weren’t winning by a ton they were playing games that were closer than you think. The W’s needed a little bit of a wake up call and there were a lot of injuries and the Warriors appreciate how healthy the team was and that they didn’t have any truly serious injuries yet this season.

That is a very fortunate thing that could be said for last year and the Warriors Harrison Barnes was out for several weeks and it took him close to a month before he was ready to play. Then Steph Curry had an ankle issue that was later swelling down a little bit. There was Leandro Barbosa and Festus Ezeli who had their issues too.

Pro Bowl 2016 podcast with David Zizmor: NFL All-Star game is the brand no really cares about anymore

by David Zizmor

photo credit: AP–NFL players walk from the practice grounds at Wheeler Air Force Base after draft selections by Team Jerry Rice and Team Michael Irving

The Pro Bowl is happening this Sunday the 31st in Honolulu and frankly nobody cares. The only All-Star games that matter are the NBA and MLB. Baseball is the best one because it actually approximates the closest to an actual game. Basketball is fun for the spectacle aspect because it’s in the middle of the season.

In the NBA All-Star game nobody plays defense football is even worse because the game is after the season is over with and in football nobody plays defense because everybody wants to  avoid getting hurt. For example  Patriots running back Stevan Ridley got injured in a Pro Bowl game and suffered  a devastating knee injury.

Players get paid too much now to risk their health playing in a Pro Bowl which is ridiculous and they all feel that way and of course the players are honored to be chosen there’s no doubt about that. Of course it makes a big difference in a lot of players contract.

Barracuda shut out by Stars to kick off road trip

By: Eric He

photo credit: San Jose Barracuda–The Texas Stars pitch a shutout 3-0 against the SJ Barracuda on Wednesday night in Texas

The San Jose Barracuda saw their road trip begin on a sour note with a 3-0 loss to the Texas Stars on the road on Wednesday night.

It was the Barracuda’s season-high fifth consecutive loss and once again prevented head coach Roy Sommer from recording his 636th career win tying Fred “Bun” Cook in the record books for most wins by an AHL coach.

Texas got into the driver’s seat early with two first period goals. Curtis McKenzie put the Stars on the board with a little more than six minutes gone by in regulation, and Brett Ritchie connected on a late power play with a one-timer to give Texas a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.

McKenzie provided an insurance goal in the third period after neither team was able to connect in the second period. He pocketed the second power play goal of the night for the Stars, scoring on a rebound to put the Stars ahead 3-0.

Aaron Dell recoded 33 saves in a losing effort for San Jose. The two teams were relatively even on the shot clock — Texas had 36 to San Jose’s 35 — but the Stars’ Maxime Lagace was perfect in net, recording the shutout.

The Barracuda will look to snap their losing streak on Friday when they head to San Antonio to play the Rampage at 5:30 PM PST.

Poeltl leads Utes to home victory

By Jeremy Kahn

After two straight hard fought home wins over the Arizona State Sun Devils and the then 12th ranked Arizona Wildcats, the California Golden Bears return to the road, where they have struggled this season.

Jakob Poeltl scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, as the Utah Utes defeated the Golden Bears 73-64 at the Jon Huntsman Center.

Kyle Kuzma and Brandon Taylor each 15 points for the Utes, who have four straight games and have improved to 16-5 overall and 5-3 in PAC-12 play.

Jaylen Brown tied his career-high with 27 points, while Ivan Rabb added 12, as the Golden Bears fell to 1-5 on the road this season.

The Utes put together a 23-4 run after they trailed the Golden Bears by five points in the second half. Taylor came up big during the run, as he nailed back-to-back three pointers, while Poeltl scored on a dunk and an old fashioned three-point play and Kuzma ended the run with six straight points to give the Utes a 58-44 lead.

Brown got the Golden Bears back in the game, as he scored on a three-point play to bring the Golden Bears to within four points.
