~Starting with changes such as the new 3-on-3 format and three individual games, the 2016 NHL All-Star Game, which was hosted in Nashville for the first time, had a little bit of everything.

With 3-on-3 hockey during overtime being implemented during the 2015-2016 regular season, 3-on-3 was not 100% new for some players. However, another first was 3-on-3 for 20 minutes.

Highlights included the unlikely All Star becoming MVP even more deservedly so, a penalty was involved for the first time since 2009, there was a fight/hit, a coach’s challenge and a shutout. With the Eastern Conference winning the Skills Competition, they got to decide the schedule and played in the first game. Four different goalies had assists, two in each semifinal games. Each semifinal game had a player with three assists.

The first semifinal, Metropolitan versus Atlantic, was a come from behind victory in the sense that the Metropolitan never trailed until the very end. Dylan Larkin, the fastest skater ever in the Skills Competition, had three assists. Aaron Ekblad, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang led with five shots apiece. Letang also had the only block.

In the beginning, there was a lost stick. Letang scored first shortside at 1:01, after a missed shot by the Atlantic on the other end, aided by Malkin. Erik Karlsson tied the game at 3:47, helped by Larkin. Evgeny Kuznetsov made it 2-1 at 4:16, assisted by Justin Faulk as goalie Roberto Luongo dove. Regular season teammate Jaromi Jagr then scored at 9:22, Larkin with his second assist. Each team had 10 shots apiece in the first half.

Malkin started the second half with a 25 second goal on the half’s first shot, beginning with a breakaway and finishing with a spin, aided by Brandon Saad and goalie Cory Schneider. At 2:52, Ekblad received a pass from Ryan O’Reilly, as he scored for the Atlantic behind goalie Braden Holtby. Leo Komarov also helped. P.K. Subban ended up scoring the game winner at 5:22. He had just had a breakaway the last time in front of Holtby. Maybe it was the Amy Grant back rubs. Subban was assisted by Larkin and Ben Bishop. Each team had 12 shots apiece in the second, for a total of 22-22.

After the first two scores, the second semifinal looked like it would be slower than the first game, but it had a few surprises up its sleeves. Corey Perry and Daniel Sedin each had four shots.

James Neal scored just 26 seconds in, aided by Matt Duchene and Shea Weber. 21 seconds later, Pacific captain John Scott scored during his first time playing 3 on-3. He was helped by Brent Burns. An illegal play by goalie Pekka Rinne led to a 4-on-3 power play. Joe Pavelski was there to capitalize at 5:26, assisted by Sedin and Perry. At 8:01, Neal re-tied the game. He was the first to score multiple goals and the only one on Team Central. Right after, on the other end, Johnny Gaudreau scored against Neal’s regular season teammate Rinne. Gaudreau was assisted by Mark Giordano and Taylor Hall. With 33 seconds left in the first half, Patrick Kane re-tied the game with the half’s sixth goal. He was aided by Jamie Benn and Rinne. After the goal, Kane had a friendly tussle with Scott.

In the second half, things sped up even more. John Gibson became the fourth goalie to assist when he helped Sedin at 1:49 and the teams were off to the races. At 3:27, Scott got his second goal for the first two goal lead with another assist by Burns. Then at 4:04, Taylor Hall made it 6-3, aided by Gaudreau. At 4:28, Sedin scored a wide open goal (which would be the game winner), helped by Perry and Drew Doughty to build a Pacific four goal lead. However, right on the other end, Dustin Byfuglien scored the fastest consecutive goal in the game 8 seconds later, with Tyler Seguin and Vladimir Tarasenko for the Central. Seguin then followed, with Byfuglien and Tarasenko to make it 7-5. Perhaps the most crucial save was when Gibson then made a full leg save against another Seguin attempt. The Pacific followed with two more goals. At 7:44, Hall scored with Burns and at 8:45, Doughty scored on an empty net with Pavelski. Roman Josi scored the ninth goal of the second half and the last of the semifinals at 8:53, with Seguin and Neal. The Central had 16 to 5 faceoff wins. The Pacific had 8-2 takeaways.

The final game featured Team Atlantic versus Team Pacific, which ended up a goalie showcase.  Shots were 12-10 in favor of the Pacific first half.

Perry scored at 3:38, from Sedin and Burns for the first goal. There was a possible hook on Subban. Perry then scored again with 2:53 left. Bishop was hit by Hall, however, so the goal went under review. Interference was the call. After Bishop was pulled, it led to the game’s first timeout. Chris Sutter’s pep talk before the final ended up being a winner the second time around. After the win, John Scott was hoisted on the shoulders of his teammates. The Pacific only had four shots the second half. The Atlantic won faceoffs 7-3.

Game notes: Notable absences due to injury consisted of Chicago Blackhawks’ Jonathan Toews, who was replaced by Neal and Washington Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin, who and was replaced by John Tavares as the Metropolitan Division captain and in the game by Kuznetsov   .  Jagr was the captain for the Atlantic and NHL points leader Kane was the captain for the Central.  For the San Jose Sharks, former Shark Scott was named MVP, current San Jose teammates Joe Pavelski (his first All-Star game) had a final game-high five shots and Brent Burns (his second) had three assists in the second semifinal game. Saturday, it was announced that next year’s All-Star game will be held at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Warriors rout Knicks behind Klay Thompson’s 34

By: Eric He

The Golden State Warriors jumped ahead in the second quarter and never looked back in a 116-95 win over the Knicks on the road Sunday night.

Klay Thompson led the way with 34 points on 14-of-18 shooting, making up for a subpar evening for Stephen Curry who finished with just 13 points. Draymond Green posted another triple double, putting up 20 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out 10 assists.

The Warriors trailed 20-18 after one quarter, getting off to a slow start, but outscored the Knicks 37-29 in the second to take control with a 55-49 halftime advantage.

They pulled away in the third, holding the Knicks to just 16 points. The Warriors opened the second half on a 7-0 run, and a jumper by Thompson put Golden State ahead 62-49. Entering the fourth with an 82-65 advantage, the Warriors did not falter in the fourth quarter like in Philadelphia; rather, they kept their foot on the gas pedal put the game away for good.

The Knicks cut the deficit to 13 midway through the fourth, but a three by Curry squashed any hopes of a comeback.

The Warriors advance to 44-4 and 22-4 on the road.

“They’re a championship-level team and that’s what they did tonight,” Knicks rookie Kristaps Porzingis told ESPN. Next up, the Warriors will head to the nation’s capital to play the Wizards on Wednesday night to wrap up a three-game road trip. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

Buffaloes overcome horrific start to win

After starting their game against the California Golden Bears a woeful 1-for-19, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Tad Boyle took a timeout to talk to his team.

Following their slow start, the Buffaloes regrouped behind 18 points from Josh Scott and a late steal by Xavier Talton helped them defeat the Golden Bears 70-62.

With the victory, the Buffaloes improve to 17-5 on the season, and 6-3 in PAC-12 play, while the Golden Bears dropped their second straight after defeating the then number 12 Arizona Wildcats at Haas Pavilion on January 23. The Buffaloes and the Golden Bears also split their season series, as the Golden Bears won the initial matchup 79-65 on January 1 at Haas Pavilion.

The Golden Bears were led by Jaylen Brown, who scored 21 points, including 13 of the Golden Bears final 16 points.

Once again, the Golden Bears were without the services of Tyrone Wallace, who missed his fourth straight game with a broken bone in his right hand that was suffered on January 16.

Ivan Rabb and Jordan Matthews each scored 13 points for the Golden Bears, who fall to 14-8 on the season and 4-5 in conference play.

Team Irvin led 28-14 at halftime and blew the game open in the second half.

NCAA podcast with Michelle Richardson: Kansas gets OT win past Kentucky; Can Sooners stay ranked number one; Howard are in a rebuilding year

by Michelle Richardson

photo credit: ca.sports.yahoo.com Kentucky head coach John Calipari

Kansas Jayhawks head coach Bill Self really has a losing record at Kansas so this win has to be very good for him.
The thing with Kentucky is in this sport you always have this cycle where Kentucky was the dominate team. Eventually the Jayhawks have great recruiting and everything.

If I was a recruit I don’t know how I would sit behind these guys and in Kentucky head coach John Calipari is a coach whose won and done it already. He’s got very few guys whose waiting to mature. So with Self he’s getting a lot more kids that want to mature through the process at least through their sophomore year.

Michelle has much more coverage on the NCAA including the Oklahoma Sooners who are number one in the AP poll and could stay at the top the rest of the way. Also the Howard Bison are in a rebuilding year. Not exactly the most talked about school in the NCAA but Michelle talks about where they need to go to get to the top.

The slide continues as Kings lose in Memphis 121-117

NBA: Sacramento Kings at Memphis Grizzlies

by Charlie O. Mallonee

The situation is growing desperate as the Sacramento Kings – who had won five consecutive games – have now lost four straight games after losing to the Grizzlies 121-117 on Saturday night in Memphis.

The game was not close until the fourth quarter when the Kings came alive on offense and defense. Sacramento (20-27) started the game very slow trailing by 14 points after the first 12 minutes were over. At the half, the Kings still trailed the Grizzlies by 14 points.

The Kings lackluster play continued in the third quarter and they found themselves down to Memphis (28-20) by 15 points as the fourth quarter began.

In the fourth quarter, Darren Collison and Rudy Gay led a mad charge on offense that would result in 40 points in the quarter for Sacramento. The Kings cut the lead to just one point off a Collison 3-point bank shot with 16 seconds to go but were unable to score after that basket.

The Kings comeback attempt was hampered when DeMarcus Cousins re-injured his left ankle after Marc Gasol rolled over the ankle with 2:02 left in the game. Cousins missed time in second quarter when he rolled the left ankle while driving to the basket.

Ultimately, the Kings were unable to overcome their slow start and lack of defense which led to their fourth consecutive loss.

Kings

Rudy Gay led the Kings scoring attack putting up 21 points in 38 minutes of playing time. Gay shot 6-for-12 overall, 2-for-3 from 3-point range and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line.

DeMarcus Cousins posted another double-double game scoring 17 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in just 30 minutes on the floor. Cousins had a horrible shooting night hitting on just 3-of-17 field goal attempts. He was 10-for-14 from the charity stripe.

Rajon Rondo scored 15 points and recorded eight assists but was charged with seven turnovers. Rondo fouled out of the game late in the fourth quarter.

Darren Collison put up 20 points coming off the bench with 14 of those points coming in the final quarter. Collison shot 50-percent from the field connecting on 7-of-14 shots.

Omri Casspi also supplied some punch off the bench. Casspi also shot 50-percent from the field hitting on 6-of-12 attempts.

Sacramento shot just 41.3-percent (38-of-92) from the field. They turned the ball over 19 times and that resulted in 26 Memphis points. The Kings had just 16 assists in the contest.

Grizzlies

Jeff Green led the Memphis scoring attack coming off the bench and putting up 29 points. Green was 11-for-16 from the floor, 3-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arc and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

Marc Gasol scored 22 points and dished out five assists in the game. The Kings had no answer for Gasol until the fourth quarter.

Courtney Lee was also a force to be reckoned with as he scored 18 points going a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor (3-for-3 from 3-point range).

The Grizzlies shot 51.9-percent (41-for-79) from the floor and were 8-for-18 (44.4-percent) from long distance.

The Grizzlies exceeded their 96-points per game average by 25 points on Saturday night.

Up next

The Kings returned to Sacramento after the game and will host the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night at Sleep Train Arena. The Bucks have lost two consecutive games and have a 20-29 record on the season.

The Kings need a win over the Bucks as they will have to face the third best team in Eastern Conference – the Chicago Bulls – on Wednesday night in Sacramento.

Sacramento will then head out on a four-game road trip that will take them to Brooklyn, Boston, Cleveland and Philadelphia before the All-Star break.

Warriors survive in win over 76ers

By: Eric He

The Golden State Warriors needed a last-second three-pointer by Harrison Barnes to escape with a win over the lowly Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday night.

The Warriors led by 19 points entering the fourth quarter, but the bench squandered the lead and when the starters returned, they were sloppy and lackadaisical. Down 103-90 with under four minutes to play, the 76ers went on a 15-2 run to tie the game when Isaiah Canaan stole the ball at midcourt and Ish Smith evened the score with a lay-up.

The defending champions were bailed out, however, on the final possession when Draymond Green found Harrison Barnes for a corner triple, which he buried with two-tenths of a second left, essentially winning the game.

For the longest time, it seemed like another easy win for the Warriors against a 7-40 Philadelphia squad. They put up 73 points in the first half and held a 19-point advantage at halftime. But it all went awry in the second half, where the Warriors were outscored by 16 points and got away with it.

“If the gods delivered what should have happened, we probably should have lost because that’s what happens when you mess around with the game and the ball,” Steve Kerr said to the media.

Klay Thompson led the way with 32 points while Stephen Curry added 23.

The Warriors play the Knicks tomorrow in Madison Square Garden.

Stanford’s men’s basketball weekend road swing ended badly, as the Cardinal dropped a 96-74 Pac-12 game at Utah’s Huntsman Center Saturday in Salt Lake City.

Jakob Poeltl led the Utes with a game-high 23 points, topping the 20-point mark for a career-best third straight game. Also hitting double-digits for Utah were Dakarai Tucker with 17 points, Kyle Kuzma with 16, Brandon Taylor with 15 and Lorenze Bonam with 14 points to go with his five assists.

The Utes (17-5 overall, 6-3 Pac-12) shot a blistering 71 percent from the field in the first half (including 6 of 10 behind the 3-point arc), building a 48-39 halftime lead in the process. Early in the second half, the Cardinal (11-9 overall, 4-5 Pac-12) whittled away at Utah’s lead and pulled to within 62-54 with just under 11 minutes remaining.

Utah responded by scoring 13 of the next 19 points to build a 17-point lead with 6:50 left. At the same time, the Utes held Stanford to 31 percent shooting in the second half.

Roscoe Allen and Dorian Pickens each scored 16 points to lead Stanford, which travels to Berkeley next Saturday for a Pac-12 game against California. Tip-off for the Cardinal-Bears contest is 1 p.m.
