That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Amaury, just wanted to get your take on MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred’s letter saying that MLB players can wear their regular uniforms and opt out of wearing Pride uniforms without getting fined or disciplined. This comes after three San Francisco Giants pitchers Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker, and Ryan Walker wrote Gen 9:12-16 on their caps in a game against the Chicago Cubs on Fri Jun 5 at Oracle Park.

#2 Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff threw a pitch for his 900th career strikeout. Woodruff on Monday night was dealing so well he took a no hitter into the sixth inning. The appearance was Woodruff’s first appearance since April 30th after suffering from a right shoulder injury. Woodruff’s line pitched six, no walks and had ten strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter against the Cincinnati Reds.

#3 Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Kyle Tucker left Monday’s game against the Minnesota Twins in the second inning due to lower back spasms. Tucker walked who walked in the second inning the lightly ran to second on Tommy Edman’s base hit to right was replaced by pinch runner Alex Call. Tucker is listed as day to day.

#4 After missing 19 games due to a strained right hamstring Cincinnati Red shortstop Elly De La Cruz is expected to be reinstated on the Reds Tuesday roster according to Reds manager Terry Francona. De La Cruz has been out since Jun 1. De La Cruz took some pre game hitting in the cage before Monday’s game against the Brewers. De La Cruz went 2-8 in Triple A Louisville making three rehab starts.

#5 Buster Posey the San Francisco Giants president talked about the July trade deadline. The Giants might be sellers and overhaul the team. There has been talk about a possible Willy Adames deal that would send the infielder to the New York Mets, Posey said that if the club doesn’t quickly make a turnaround he would be open minded about talking to interested clubs about even his star players for trades.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: MLB Commissioner Criticizes Giants Pride Night Protocols

San Francisco Giants starter Landen Roupp and MLB players received a warning about altering or writing on their caps and breaking uniform code. Commissioner Rob Manfred office stated that it was not the message that was written on the caps but not being uniform with the rest of the team the league office has a problem with. (AP News photo)

MLB Commissioner Criticizes Giants Pride Night Protocols

Commissioner Manfred will not discipline the Giants pitchers who wrote the Bible verse on hats that already had a monogram celebrating Pride Night at Oracle Park. However, Manfred did criticize the Giants’ protocols for this promotion.

Criticized the San Francisco Giants’ communication with their players during their annual Pride Night, noting that the team “botched guidance” regarding opt-out options. This left some players unclear on whether they could decline to wear the team’s Pride-themed caps.

This is what happens when you are not having a good season, even the Commissioner is not that friendly to you.

So, this game is over.

Memorable Baseball Promotion?  The Detroit Tigers, back when Mike Neek wanted to set a permanent attendance record, he purposefully gave away nothing by locking the gates and holding a massive party in the parking lot. It’s the ultimate anti-promotion, achieving an officially recorded attendance of exactly zero.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Giants Pride Cap Controversy goes Coast to Coast

Giants Pride Cap Controversy goes Coast to Coast

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

In the world of Social Media and Artificial Intelligence, everything, both inside and outside of sports, sometimes becomes a source of controversy, even when it has nothing to do with sports. San Francisco Giants pitcher Sam Hentges refused to wear the Giants rainbow Pride Night cap during the team’s Pride event. Three other pitchers,Landed Roupp, JT Brubaker, and Ryan Walker altered their specialty rainbow Pride hats by writing Bible verses (Genesis 9:12-16) on them.

All the Giants needed after having a terrible season on the field, looking like the mediocre 81 wins they had last season, might be unattainable this 2026 season. The team is lining up player sales, some with big, lucrative contracts, and deals with other teams that still have hope of postseason play. So, all of a sudden, this Pride Cap controversy is not an ESPN story; the rest of the non-sports media are joining in with all kinds of editorials on both sides of the issue, from the NY Times, to The Wall Street Journal, to USA Today, to La Opinión, and more.

The US Department of Justice is opening an investigation into Major League Baseball regarding the San Francisco Giants Pride Caps controversy. MLB Commissioner and the league state that warnings issued to three SF Giants pitchers were routine uniform violations. And clarifying the warning: had absolutely nothing to do with the content of the message,” and that identical wording is given for family tributes.

This ordeal reverberated across the country, with the Texas Rangers replacing their Pride Night for Faith and Family Day. Oak Revolution, a minor league baseball team in Pennsylvania, forfeited a game scheduled for its annual Pride Night on Thursday because players did not want to be associated with the “promotion”. And so it goes. Virtue signaling is popular in the US these days on all topics, political, non-political, sports, and in the category of “you name it”

Such is the world we live in today, where a baseball cap goes viral and nationwide. To me, it actually makes me sick that we are even talking about this. Baseball is a beautiful game, in my opinion, the greatest. Why do we have to make everything a conflict in this country today? Why? We are all entitled to our own opinions. I respect your opinion and hope you respect mine as well: this story has no place in baseball. But these are the promotions in baseball at this time in our history. I am old-fashioned; I like Bat Day, Little League Day, fireworks, and the other boring-but-fun stuff that UNITES everybody. Can we do more of that?

Baseball Promotions 1979: The Chicago White Sox hosted “Disco Demolition Night,” during which fans brought records to be blown up on the field, resulting in another game forfeiture.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Amaury you talked about Pres Trump’s appearance in the New York Knicks owner’s box of James Dolan. The players were tight lipped about the appearance the fans expressed displeasure by booing. Was it the right idea for Dolan to have Trump in the owners box on Monday night at game 3 at MSG?

#2 Amaury how impressed in the short period of time that the Vegas Golden Knights have been around that they have been to the NHL Stanley Cup Finals now this is their third appearance?

#3 Amaury, Your were the Golden State Warriors Spanish play by play voice in the 90s when you look at the orgainization now and see that they have vacated Spanish play by play and there is no reason given for not having Spanish play by play in the San Francisco market how surprising is that to you?

#4 Amaury, wanted to ask you about former San Francisco Chronicle columnist Glenn Dickey. Glenn was noted for writing subjects about all the major sports regarding the 49ers, Raiders, A’s, Giants, Warriors, during his peak career years. Dickey passed away in December 2025 after suffering from Dementia. People may not have agreed with what he wrote but he did his job and people read his articles like them or not.

#5 Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says that all 30 teams are aboard with their push for a hard salary cap even the Los Angeles Dodgers. Does MLB have enough going on their side of the argument that can make a salary cap stick or do the players have a enough leverage to hold, not get paid and be able to hold out and make the owners back down?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: The Pride of the Yankees

Former New York Yankee first baseman Lou Gehrig played in 2,130 consecutive games from Jun 1, 1925 to Apr 30, 1939. Gehrig passes away from ALS at age 37 in 1942. (photo from the Lou Gehrig photo gallery)

The Pride of the Yankees

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

The Pride of the Yankees is the famous nickname given to the great New York Yankees first baseman, Lou Gehrig, by Paul Gallico, a Sportswriter who covered the Yankees in those years. Those who are not well-versed in baseball might remember the classic Academy Award-winning film of the same name. Gallico coined the phrase for the title of his 1942 biographical book.

There was also the “Iron Horse,” another nickname the great Gehrig carried until his untimely death from ALS at the age of 37. According to the ALS Foundation, ALS is a progressive disease in which a person’s brain loses connection with the muscles, slowly taking away their ability to walk, talk, eat, and eventually breathe. Although there is still no cure or treatment that halts progression, new treatments are helping to slow and ease symptoms.

Baseball is well within its rights to hold an annual Lou Gehrig Day on June 2 to honor the legendary New York Yankees first baseman and raise global awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. MLB designates numerous days at ballparks across the country each season:

Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, Roberto Clemente Day, the fight for Cancer, and many other special days, like a very fun day and my favorite, Little League Day at the park, with thousands of kids parading in full garb around the field.. But overall, remembering, honoring, and celebrating the game of baseball. This is why we go to the park to watch baseball. That’s it.

In 2025, for the third consecutive year, MLB drew over 71 million fans to its ballparks during the regular season. This trend has not been seen since the 2004 to 2007 seasons. Even with the looming potential lockout by owners this next December, MLB is a healthy sport.

Baseball should always continue to promote the game, its great roots/ history, and its players. I honestly do not believe baseball should celebrate any personal lifestyle, whatever it might happen to be. That is just my opinion. Like, I respect every human being, and of course, I also respect your opinion.

Otherwordly creature in the Major Leagues; Ohtani pitches 6 shutout innings and goes 3-4 as DH

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Wednesday night, Ohtani lowered his ERA to 0.74 with six scoreless innings while reaching base five times to raise his batting average above .300 for the first time since Opening Day in a do-it-all performance in a 7-0 win over the D-backs, securing at least a split in the four-game series at Chase Field.

Otherworldly creature in the Major Leagues Shohei Ohtani played his first official Major League game on March 29, 2018, as the designated hitter and eighth batter for the Los Angeles Angels against the Oakland Athletics. I was there, as a matter of fact, I broadcast that game.

All of us have read about Ohtani, his greatness coming out of Japan, he was like Godzilla, the Monster many have seen in the old horror films. But nobody (including myself) figured out this man was destined for greatness since he first arrived in the “big show.” “He’s the best player that’s ever walked this earth,” catcher Will Smith said. “It’s fun to see him each and every day going out there and competing, giving us six scoreless innings, getting on base a bunch. You don’t do that all the time.”

Nobody covering baseball that is alive today, or fans for that matter, has seen such a thing wearing a major league uniform. Let’s have some fun and look at everything baseball. Babe Ruth, arguably the most famous and revered baseball player in history, stole 122 bases in a 22-year major league career.

Shohei Ohtani has stolen 177 bases to date, with many years left in his career. Last night, Ohtani lowered his ERA to 0.74 with six scoreless innings while reaching base five times to raise his batting average above .300 for the first time since Opening Day in a do-it-all performance in a 7-0 over the D-backs, securing at least a split in the four-game series at Chase Field.

I remember in baseball, Press Boxes around the country editorialized about whether this guy was for real or just a product of marketing and baseball propaganda. Shohei Ohtani’s contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers is a 10-year, $700 million deal. Uniquely, $680 million is deferred, with Ohtani making $2 million annually from 2024 to 2033 and $68 million annually from 2034 to 2043, giving the team major-league payroll flexibility.

Shohei Ohtani is indeed the face of the game. Everybody who follows baseball has to thank the Baseball Gods for what we are watching right now. This is not a movie; this is real life. In Japan, Shohei Ohtani is most famously referred to as “two-sword style”.

Originally a samurai term popularized by legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, the Japanese media uses it to describe his rare ability to dominate as both a pitcher and a hitter.I have spoken to Japanese writers, who speak English and a couple who speak Spanish, and they all tell me he is a “once in a lifetime talent”, and you can translate that to all the languages in the world.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: A Statue for Vin Scully-Simply the Best-From my Notebook

Los Angeles Angels TV play by play announcer and author Amaury Pi Gonzalez (left) and Los Angeles Dodgers radio and TV play by play announcer Vin Scully (right) pose for a photo (photo from the author Amaury Pi Gonzalez)

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

The Los Angeles Dodgers Approve $1.1 Million Project to Build Statue Honoring Vin Scully – The Greatest “Voice of the Soul” in American Baseball History After more than half a century as the “immortal voice” of American baseball, legend Vin Scully is finally set to have his own statue outside Dodger Stadium in a $1.1 million project approved by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The man who recounted some of MLB history’s greatest moments with a voice described as “the sound of an American summer” is now preparing to be immortalized in the very place where he spent 67 years creating the soul of the Dodgers, also called 28 World Series — a legacy many believe is even greater than baseball itself.

My good friend and ex-Dodgers Spanish broadcaster Jaime Jarrin first introduced me to Vin Scully in 1988 when I was broadcasting for the Oakland A’s, who were facing the Dodgers in that year’s World Series. Since then, I have seen Vin Scully many times, and he has always been a gentleman and a great inspiration not only for me but for numerous broadcasters for many decades.

The last time legendary Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully visited Angel Stadium in 2016 to call the Freeway Series during the regular season, I was the Spanish play-by-play announcer for the LA Angels on FSN (Fox Sports Net) in Los Angeles.

His broadcast booth (visiting TV) was separated from my broadcast partner José Mota’s and mine by a glass partition. When I was doing the Spanish for the SF Giants, my wife would come with me to the games on Sundays. She has her “Broadcaster’s Baseball,” which she brings to the Sunday games, and she collects autographs from the visiting teams’ broadcasters. That included a signature from Mr. Scully.

Vin gave Gail permission to call him “Vin”. One of the best “gifts” Gail has ever received. She was born in SoCal and has been a lifelong Dodger fan, with fond memories of attending a game when Don Drysdale was pitching his no-hitter. Fast-forward to recent memories: Mr. Scully told me after a game, “Don’t forget to say hi to Gail.”

A true gentleman. Vin Scully Statue at Dodger Stadium will be great for baseball fans and for a great man and broadcaster, and I applaud the LA Dodgers for the initiative, because Vin Scully was the best baseball play-by-play announcer who ever lived, from Brooklyn to Los Angeles and is well known and recognized all over the world. He broadcast the Dodgers games on the radio and later on television for 67 years; he was simply the best.

Quote: “May God give you for every storm, a rainbow, for every tear, a smile, for every care, a promise, and a blessing in each trial.”-Vin Scully.

The man from Linden on a special Mission

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Aaron Judge got an offer from the San Francisco Giants in 2022. The Giants made an aggressive push for a long 9-year contract worth $360 million. The Giants’ last player of that caliber was Barry Bonds. The Bay Area media wrote about the possibility of the Giants acquiring such a slugger, especially because he was born and raised just 90 miles from San Francisco, a star from Northern California.

Aaron Judge officially re-signed with the New York Yankees on December 7, 2022, for nine years, agreeing to the same deal the Giants were offering: a nine-year, $360 million contract. The judge chose wisely. The Yankees have been home to sluggers since Babe Ruth; not only do the Bronx Bombers seem to be in the pennant race every year, but they also have a great tradition, with an unprecedented 27 World Series titles.

Aaron Judge has won back-to-back AL MVP Awards and three of the past four seasons.’ No player in history ever had more than four (4) years of hitting 50 or more homeruns. Aaron Judge could be the first ever during this current season, and yes, that includes the Babe.

There is a four-way tie for a player hitting 40 home runs. They are Aaron Judge, Babe Ruth, Sammy Sosa, and Mark McGwire. Some of the greatest, who never reached five seasons of 50-plus home homeruns, also include Henry Aaron and Barry Bonds, Henry Aaron, for decades the all-time home run king, never had a 50-homer season. Barry Bonds did it just a single time.

It happened only 54 times in total by 34 players. The majority did it only once, some twice, and Alex Rodriguez, the only one to hit 50 homeruns in a season three times.. As of today, the man from Linden is one of the top home run hitters in the game(16) and with 113 games left to play this season, Aaron Judge figures to have a very good shot at becoming the first ever to have five (5) seasons of 50 or more homeruns.

He will probably play his whole career in Pinstripes, and that makes a lot of sense. I can fully understand why he did not want to sign with the Giants in 2022.
