Cal Bears basketball Thursday recap: What a difference a day makes; Cal dominates Stanford for third straight win 64-59

PALO ALTO — The Cal Bears’ Connor Vanover led Cal in scoring with 24 points on Thursday night at Maples Pavilion, helping the Golden Bears to their third straight victory in one of the most exciting, shocking turnarounds for this season in the 64-59 victory. With 56.7 seconds left, Vanover hit a three-pointer after Stanford cut the lead to just four points. Vanover hit nine out of 12 shots and had five three-pointers and blocked six shots.

The Bears, who set a school record of 16 straight losses, have re-invented themselves and have won three straight against three difficult opponents: Washington, Washington State University, and Stanford. On offense, Paris Austin had 15 points and Matt Bradley had 14 points. Bradley was a scrapper all night he had seven rebounds and fouled out of the game. For the Cardinal, KZ Okpala led Stanford with 21 points and eight rebounds and Josh Sharma had 11 points and 13 rebounds. The Cardinal’s Justin Sueing had nine points and 10 rebounds.

Cardinal Cormac Ryan hit two three-pointers, which helped cut the Bears lead down to 58-55 after Vanover’s three-pointer. Sharma then scored on a dunk. Grant Antecevich and Sueing also hit free throws to add to the score.

It was 17-0 run for Cal that made the difference and showed why this team is fired up. The Bears’ offense dominated and put the Bears up from three points to the five-point victory. The Bears went from zero to hero going from 16 straight losses to three straight wins, making them the hottest team in the Pac-12.

The Bears head to the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas next week. If the Bears could win two or three in Vegas it might secure head coach Wyking Jones’ job situation, which at one time was questioned and more over vocalized by the fans at Haas Pavilion during some home games.

The Bears will head to Vegas for the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament and face the fifth seed, which is yet to be decided.

#1 If things couldn’t get worse for the San Francisco Giants, Giants outfielder Cameron Maybin was arrested at 2:30 am on Friday morning for DUI. He was driving in Scottsdale when he was pulled over by an officer who said he smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes. Maybin was arrested and released two hours later. The team said they are monitoring the situation and had no comment.

#2 With San Francisco Giants CEO Larry Baer being in the headlines this week, could this be a distraction for the team in spring training?

#3 How despite losing, the Sacramento Kings played some very close games with the Los Angeles Clippers and the Milwaukee Bucks this past week?

#4 Chaquita Evans became the first woman to be drafted by an NBA team in the NBA 2K league. Does this signal that more women could be playing in the NBA?

#5 The Oakland Raiders and the Oakland Coliseum Authority authorized a two-year deal on Tuesday for the Raiders to stay at the Coliseum for 2019. The team will pay $7.5 million and 2020 is an option year at the cost of $9.5 million. The Raiders are still being sued by the City of Oakland as they’re moving to Las Vegas and will leave the city in a financial lurch as the lawsuit claims.

#1 The San Jose Barracuda (30-16-2-4) had a breakdown in their defense on Friday and Saturday, losing by scores of 8-4 and 5-2 to the Ontario Reign on Friday and Bakersfield Condors (34-16-2-1) on Saturday.

#2 On Saturday, things didn’t get better as Bakersfield scored two goals in the first period to open up the game.

#3 The Barracuda used goaltender Cuda goalie Josef Korenar (19-6-1), but Bakersfield was crashing the nets all game long. Was Korenar just having an off night or did the Condors prepare for this one against the Barracuda?

#4  Condor goalie Shane Starrett (21-4-3) saved 32 of 34 San Jose shots in the three goal win.

#1 The Golden State Warriors, who had lost four of their last six games, got a stunning win in Philadelphia against the 76ers 120-117. The Warriors needed the win to stay on top in the Western Conference. They now lead the Denver Nuggets by 1 1/2 games who the Warriors play on Friday. They also struggled against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night and play the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night.

#2 Was it stupid or did it make sense for the Philadelphia Phillies to sign Bryce Harper to a 13-year, $330 million deal?

#3 How much of a measuring stick will San Francisco Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner be and how effective will he be for the Giants?

#1 The Los Angeles Clippers got a seven-point win over the Sacramento Kings (33-31) 116-109 on Saturday night in another game that was a cliff hanger.

#2 On Monday night, the Kings host the New York Knicks and the Kings held a ten-point lead over the Knicks for most of the game. It showed how well they were coached to hold such a lead.

#3 The Knicks are struggling this season at 13-51 for the Kings. It was like taking candy from a baby at Golden One on Monday night.

#4 The free throws made the difference for Sacramento 81.5% and for New York 60.0%

#5 On Wednesday, March 6th, the task doesn’t get easier as the Kings host the Boston Celtics (38-26).

Baer to take leave of absence; Will Baer step down from CEO position?

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Giants CEO Larry Baer has released a statement that he will be taking a leave of absence the leave of absence started on Monday following last week’s physical altercation with his wife Pam in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley. The two were recorded when Baer reached for his phone which Pam was holding. Baer stood up to get the phone out Pam’s hands and she fell over in the chair she was seated in. Baer stood over his wife and walked away in the video.

Here is the statement released by the San Francisco Giants and Baer today: “The Board of Directors of San Francisco Baseball Associates is closely monitoring the matter involving Giants President and CEO Larry Baer. Pursuant to League policy, Major League Baseball is taking the lead in gathering all facts surrounding the situation. The organization is cooperating fully with the process. Mr. Baer has acknowledged that his behavior was unacceptable, apologized to the organization and is committed to taking steps to make sure that this never happens again. He has also requested, and the Board has accepted, his request to take personal time away from the Giants beginning today (Monday). The Board has asked the Giants executive team to manage the day-to-day operations of the Club during this period, reporting directly to the Board. As leaders in the community, we at the Giants hold ourselves to the highest standards and those standards will guide how we consider this matter moving forward. We have no further comment at this time.”

MLB has suspended MLB players in the past Adroldis Chapman pitcher of the New York Yankees and Jose Reyes of the Colorado Rockies for domestic violence. The talk of a double standard was starting if baseball or the Giants didn’t do anything to Baer to discipline him for domestic violence in a public place. There has been talk about Baer stepping down from his CEO post and MLB suspending him, which is to be determined. If Baer were to step down he would most likely remain a minority owner, but he will not have input on the day to day operations of the club.

The Giants have had some other bad off-the-field issues during the off season the Giants majority owner Charles B Johnson donated $2700 to Republican Mississippi U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith’s political campaign. Hyde-Smith had said in front of a group of supporters that she would want a front row seat to a public hanging and she was photographed with a Confederate army hat on holding a Confederate rifle.  The blow back forced Johnson to request his money back from Hyde-Smith, while Johnson pleaded that he had no knowledge that Hyde-Smith was a racist.

The Giants family suffered the loses of some key high profile people first with the death of former Giants radio play-by-play announcer Hank Greenwald, followed by former Giants superstar Hall of Fame slugger first baseman Willie McCovey, and most recently, the death of Giants partner owner Peter Magowan.  The Giants had replaced former General Manager with Bobby Evans with Farhan Zaidi after Evans took what same say the blame for the teams woes over the last two seasons. Former Giants first baseman and Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda fell at a golf course and had a close call, but has recovered.

The Giants have suffered losing records for the last two seasons. As a result, it has been grueling on Giants manager Bruce Bochy, who announced his retirement concluding this season. Since the Baer altercation, none of the players, coaches, or front office people have made a statement regarding Baer or his situation. Only Bochy would say that Baer is a friend and has respect for the work he has done for the organization.
