SANTA CLARA — The Niners stumbled in a trap game, yet still, control their own destiny to the NFC one-seed. If they win out, they take the top seed. A loss to the Rams before the NFC West winner-take-all matchup with the Seahawks would give home-field to either Green Bay or New Orleans. Even with a loss this week, San Francisco would win the NFC West with a win in Seattle, thanks to a tiebreaker.

The importance of retaining the #1 seed is crucial for San Francisco. Three of the five 49ers’ Super Bowl victories came when they were the top-seed in the conference.

The good news for San Francisco is they are beginning to get healthier. Both Richard Sherman and K’Waun Williams are set to return this Sunday after missing Sunday’s loss. The return of Sherman will be important to get him game time before next weekend’s gauntlet in Seattle. Guard, Mike Person is listed as questionable, fighting a neck injury. Jaquiski Tart (broken ribs) and Dee Ford (quad, hamstring) are listed as out.

The Niners will use this matchup against the Rams to get back on track. San Francisco’s won five of their last eight games against LA, including this year’s week four 20-7 win.

In that win, San Francisco’s defense completely shut down Jared Goff, allowing only 78 passing yards on 24 attempts. The Niners shutout the Rams on third-down, holding them to 0-for-9. The offense was just okay, as Garoppolo threw for 243 yards, 101 of them were caught by George Kittle, of course. Even though Jimmy didn’t throw a TD, he rushed one in San Francisco’s second touchdown of the afternoon.

The Rams have been Jekyll and Hyde this season, looking great at times, beating the Seahawks and Saints, but then getting boat raced by the Cowboys.

Kyle Shanahan mentioned last week about preparing for Atlanta’s Super Bowl. His team didn’t answer, and they’ll face another desperate team this week. LA’s playoff hopes have pretty much gone up in smoke, as they need to win out and pray for a miracle that Minnesota doesn’t beat the Packers or Bears. They hold the final tiebreaker over the Vikings.

His team will need to be ready for everything that the Rams will bring. Todd Gurley has been much more active these last three weeks, nearly totaling 200 yards and three touchdowns. He was inactive when the Niners completely shut down the Rams in week six, expect him to get a lot of carries on Saturday.

Jared Goff is currently fourth in the NFL in passing yards, just shy of 4,000. His 17-15 TD to INT ratio is shocking, however, and can be taken advantage of a hungry 49ers’ defense.

The Niners offense fell back to earth last week, scoring just 22 points. After the best month of his career, Garoppolo finished with 200 yards and a touchdown for a 90.3 rating, the lowest in the last five games. It was also the second-lowest in the last eight weeks. TLDR, Garoppolo has been one of the best QBs in the second half of the season.

If the Niners can contain Gurley, and get to Goff, like they did four times already this year, they should be able to slow down LA’s offense. Meanwhile, their defense is susceptible to the run. Breida only had four carries last week, while Raheem Mostert had 14. Mostert’s been excellent these past few weeks, giving the Niners a multi-headed monster in the backfield.

On the Cal Bears podcast with Miguel:

#1 Just overwhelming as the Cal Bears were outplayed by the St. Mary’s Gaels on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion.

#2 The Bears came into Haas undefeated at home this season, but couldn’t stop the Gales offensive evening, losing by 12 points for their first home loss.

#3 Two of the Gales forces that were just unstoppable were Jordan Ford’s 32 points and Malik Fitts’ 28 points, who led St Mary’s in scoring.

#4 Cal head coach Mark Fox said that St. Mary’s offense was very good and trying to shut them down proved difficult.

#5 The Bears will try to get back into the win column as they matchup against Boston College at the Al Attles Classic on Saturday, Dec. 21 at the Chase Center in San Francisco.

On the Cardinal podcast with Jerry F:

#1 Great coaching by Stanford head coach Jerod Haase as the Cardinal were able to rally the troops against the USF Dons on Tuesday night at Maples Pavilion with a comeback second half. Down 23-18, the Cardinal came back with a 46-33 second half.

#2 Oscar da Silva and Daejon Davis each scored 18 points for Stanford Tuesday. Two of four players to get into double figures.

#3 Talk about how impressive this team is now improving to 10-1. They will certainly get some national attention real soon.

#4 Bryce Willis had 12 points and Spencer Jones had 10 to follow up behind da Silva and Davis in scoring.

San Jose Barracuda podcast with Marko Ukalovic: Barracuda battling to get out of cellar, try for win tonight against Ontario

On the San Jose Barracuda podcast with Marko:

#1 The Stockton Heat in Saturday’s game at Stockton Arena put the game away against the San Jose Barracuda in the third period scoring two goals and the Barracuda went down losing by three 5-2.

#2 The Barracuda put 49 shots on net against the Heat, but weren’t able to capitalize a lead for much of the game. Lots of shots, but no conversions.

#3 What’s worse for San Jose, they have lost three of their last four games and got swept Friday and Saturday by the Heat.

#4 Would you say that former Barracuda head coach Roy Sommer’s promotion to the parent club Sharks is one of the reasons why the Barracuda have struggled without his presence?

#5 The Barracuda are home tonight against the Ontario Reign. The Cuda will have to work hard to get this one as they try to get out from last place in the Pacific Division in the AHL.

Headline Sports with Barbara Mason: 49ers can’t hold the lead against Falcons, will this be a concern going forward?; Raiders string four straight losses together; plus more

On Headline Sports with Barbara:

#1 The 49ers couldn’t hold another lead, dropping their third loss of the season to the Atlanta Falcons 29-22 at Levi’s Stadium.

#2 The Oakland Raiders suffered a 20-16 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Quarterback Derek Carr just couldn’t get and anything going for Oakland in the second half on offense.

#3 For former interim Warriors head coach Luke Walton, it was an important win in defeating his old team as head coach of the Sacramento Kings in the 100-79 victory Sunday night.

#4 Changes in baseball: Cincinnati Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred is trying to change the game drastically. First by getting rid of some 42 minor league teams and next by mandating that pitchers must face the minimum of three batters before getting relieved. It certainly will be an issue with the players during contract negotiations for the CBA.

#5 The San Jose Sharks had lost six straight games before winning on Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks. They host Arizona tonight to try and pick up their second straight win under new head coach Bob Boughner.

Sacramento Kings podcast with Charlie O: Hornets force turnovers as Kings go down 110-102

Photo credit sacbee.com: The Charlotte Hornets Terry Rozier (3) drives towards the basket against the Sacramento Kings D’Aaron Fox as the Hornets defeat the Kings by eight points in Charlotte on Tuesday night.

On the Kings podcast with Charlie O

The Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night in Charlotte just simply got outplayed physically. In fact, that was one of the things that Kings head coach Luke Walton said. The Kings just physically got beaten up by the Hornets. It wasn’t in a bad way. It wasn’t like they played dirty.

The Hornets just went out and played a very physical game. They were determined. The biggest number that showed how physical Charlotte was that the Hornets outrebounded the Kings 53-31. When a team is outrebounded with 18 rebounds in a game, you’re not going to win.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: MLB rule changes irk Reds’ Bauer; Former Giant Vogt biggest reason why Bumgarner a D-Back; plus more

On Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast:

#1 The Commissioner of Baseball Rob Manfred is applying a new rule change that pitchers must face at least three batters before being relieved the very unpopular wiping out of 42 minor league teams, which has not gone over well with the players.

#2 At some point, these changes will not go over well with the players and they will tell Manfred “enough is enough” at the bargaining table when the Collective Bargaining Agreement is up.

#3 Madison Bumgarner’s departure from San Francisco came when Bumgarner realized that he won’t get a deal from San Francisco that would match the Arizona Diamondbacks’ five-year, $85 million offer.

#4 Former Giant catcher Stephen Vogt, who spoke with his current team’s brass at the Diamondbacks, said that if they can get Bumgarner it would be well worth it. Vogt is one of the biggest reasons why Bumgarner came to Arizona.

#5 The Oakland A’s have put out a full page ad in the printed versions of Bay Area local papers. The A’s are pushing the “Rooted in Oakland” brand and trying to secure a fanbase that had worries the team could leave if they don’t get a new stadium at Howard Terminal in Oakland. The A’s are trying assure everyone they are committed. But fans know that the environmental impact report, parking and public transit issues are at play still.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Will the 49ers’ 7-point loss burn into their psyche going forward?

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 The 49ers clinched a playoff spot Sunday but not before they lost to the Atlanta Falcons 29-22. Is this a loss that should concern the 49ers?

#2 There’s a breakdown in the game plan that allowed Atlanta to get back into the game and all the Falcons’ Julio Jones had to do was score on a five-yard pass to end it and give the 49ers their third loss of 2019.

San Francisco 49ers game report: Ryan’s five-yard pass to Jones gets Falcons by 49ers 29-22

photo from sfgate.com: Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones (11) sits next to the goal line after scoring against the San Francisco 49ers during the second half of an NFL football game in Santa Clara, Calif., Sunday, Dec. 15, 2019.

By Barbara Mason

On Sunday afternoon, the San Francisco Forty Niners took on the Atlanta Falcons at Levi Stadium. While most looked at this game as a walkover, we do have to remember that midseason the Falcons beat the New Orleans Saints. This is a league of “any given Sundays” and no team can be taken for granted.

Jimmy Garoppolo has been exceptional as has been the San Francisco defense so signs point to their 14th win of the season. A win today will mean a playoff berth for the team. This Sunday will mark the first time in nearly three years that quarterback Matt Ryan and Coach Kyle Shanahan have been on the same field. Shanahan and Ryan had a dream season prior to the devastating loss to the Patriots in Super Bowl LI. Atlanta is a 10 1/2 point underdog

The first quarter was a defensive effort by both teams. Matt Ryan would finish the quarter with 15 yards and Garoppolo would finish with 26 yards. The quarter would end with neither team finding the end zone although San Francisco was threatening deep in Atlanta territory.

The 49ers would start the second quarter with a Mostert rush for two yards and the first touchdown of the game giving San Francisco a 7-0 lead.. When it looked like the 49ers were taking control of the game, Matt Ryan would find Julio Jones for 5 yards and the touchdown to tie up the game at 7.

The Falcons were not finished. On their next drive Atlanta settled for a 43 yard Younghoe Koo field goal and the 10-3 lead. San Francisco would go to work with two minutes left in the half. Although unable to score the touchdown, San Francisco kicker Robbie Gould would kick a 22 yards field goal to tie up the game at the half 10-10.

Midway through the third quarter the teams remained tied at 10. That’s when it appeared that San Francisco was finally making their move. Robbie Gould kicked a 46 yard field goal taking a 13-10 lead. It was the fourth quarter that proved to be their undoing.

San Francisco scored a Garoppolo to Juszczyk touchdown from two yards out and the 49ers had their second score in a row for a 19-10 lead. Gould would miss the extra point. Atlanta answered and scored a touchdown with 5 minutes left. This game became very tight in the closing minutes 19-17. Robbie Gould would kick a successful 43 yard field goal to extend the 49ers lead 22-17. There was only 1:48 left on the clock.

When it looked like another San Francisco win, Matt Ryan would drive downfield and finish with a 5 yard pass Julio Jones for the go ahead touchdown 23-22. Their two point conversion attempt would fail. With seconds left on the clock a fumble return by the Falcons to score a touchdown gave them the win 29-22.

San Francisco had lost their third game of the season and dropped into a Wild Card spot in a real shocker. As I said “any given Sunday”!

Heat third period goals put away Barracuda 5-2

photo from sjbarracuda.com

By Marko Ukalovic

The Stockton Heat are proving themselves to be a power house in the Pacific Division. They used two goals in the third period to put a close game out of reach in a 5-2 victory over the San Jose Barracuda on Sunday evening at Stockton Arena.

Despite putting up a season high of 49 shots on goal, San Jose has dropped three out of their last four games and were swept in their weekend series with their NorCal rival. Stockton has won four in a row and sit in second place with 37 points.

Stockton (17-5-1-2) got off to a fast start in the first period when Matthew Phillips scored his second goal in two games against San Jose. Brandon Davidson and Byron Forese assisted on Phillips’ 11th goal of the season at the 1:17 mark.

Heat goalie Jon Gillies made his presence known in the opening 20 minutes as he stopped all 21 ‘Cuda shots he faced in frustrating San Jose’s offensive attack.

Stockton jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 30 seconds into the second period. Alan Quine skated up from the right wing back up towards the blue line where he found Buddy Robinson alone on the left wing. Robinson then fired a one-timer past ‘Cuda goalie Andrew Shortridge for his 12th goal of the season.

San Jose (9-13-0-2) cut the lead in half at the mid-point of the second period. Manny Weiderer won a faceoff inside the Heat zone back up to Thomas Gregoire. Gregoire quickly fed a pass up to Nick DeSimone at the point and the ‘Cuda defenseman rocketed a shot top-shelf into the upper left corner of the net beating Gillies for his second goal of the season at the 10:06 mark.

Stockton regained their two-goal lead just four seconds into their power play with Jayden Halbgewachs in the sinbin for hooking. Glenn Gawdin won the faceoff draw back up to the point to Justin Kirkland. The left winger sent in a wrist shot that change direction on Shortridge when it was deflected off Trevor Carrick’s body and sneaked into the back of the net for Kirkland’s fifth goal of the season at the 15:01 mark.

The ‘Cuda once again cut the lead back to a one-goal deficit 68 seconds later when Maxim Letunov skated in from the behind the net and centered a back-door pass to a crashing Lukas Radil, who tapped home the puck to the left side of Gillies for his first goal as a member of the Barracuda and fifth of his AHL career at the 16:09 mark. Radil now has points in both games he has played in with the ‘Cuda this season.

Stockton put the game away with two goals in the first eight minutes of the third period.

Adam Ruzicka led a rush from his own blue line and found Alex Gallant in the neutral zone. Gallant raced down the left wing and from a tough angle sniped home the puck on the short side of Shortridge for his second goal of the season at the 4:27 mark.

Then four minute later Quine fed a pass down low to Gawdin who centered the puck over to Phillips in the middle of slot and he snapped a home a one-timer top-shelf in the upper left corner for his second goal of the evening and 12th of the season at the 8:47 mark.

Gillies stopped 47 of the 49 shots the ‘Cuda peppered him with to earn his sixth victory on the season. The 47 saves were the second most of Gillies’ career. Shortridge, whose bad luck in between the pipes continues, made 22 saves on 27 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 0-for-6 on the power play. Stockton was 1-for-3.

DeSimone snapped a 15 game goal-less drought with his goal in the middle frame.

Letunov’s assist on Radil’s goal gives him 20 points on the season to lead the Barracuda in scoring and has points in 10 of his last 11 games.

The announced attendance was 3,344.

UP NEXT: The Barracuda return home to host the Ontario Reign on Wednesday 12/18 at 7:00 pm at SAP Center.
