Super Bowl LIV prediction: 49ers edge Chiefs in thriller behind 49ers MVP Raheem Mostert

Call me a homer if you want, but I truly believe that the San Francisco 49ers will win Super Bowl LIV over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Score? 35-28, 49ers.

Why?

Simple, behind the play of their stud defensive line powered by rookie defensive end Nick Bosa, and their solid running game centered around running back Raheem Mostert. In fact, Mostert is my pick to walk away with the MVP award of the game.

Mostert, who single-handily punched San Francisco’s ticket to Miami, FL after his four-touchdown, 220-yard rushing performance on 29 carries in the NFC Championship Game against the Green Bay Packers, has become an overnight sensation and a key piece in the 49ers’ run to Super Bowl LIV. After being cut by six teams before latching on with San Francisco in 2016, Mostert became the first player to rush for at least 200 yards and four touchdowns in a playoff game.

For all the talk that the 49ers’ chances to win their sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy rests on the right arm of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, and possibly so, but Mostert will be the guy that the bulk of the offense will flow through when the ball is kicked off on Sunday at 6:38 p.m. ET (3:38 p.m. PT) from Hard Rock Stadium.

The game will be tightly contested for three quarters as both Garoppolo and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will trade touchdown scoring drives heading into the fourth quarter to tie the score at 28-28.

After San Francisco forces Kansas City into a 3-and-out, Mostert will punctuate a 12-play, 75-yard drive with his second touchdown run of the game at the four-minute mark giving the 49ers a 35-28 lead. In turn, San Francisco’s offense will anxiously watch its defense get them across the finish line which its done for most of the 2019 season.

The defense, who has exhibited such a herculean effort in trying to slow down Mahomes and Kansas City’s high-powered offense, the aforementioned Bosa will come up with a crucial sack on fourth down to secure the win.

Mostert, who will finish with a stat line of 22 carries for 120 yards and two touchdowns, will be just the eighth running back named MVP of the Super Bowl joining Larry Csonka (Super Bowl VIII), Franco Harris (Super Bowl IX), John Riggins (Super Bowl XVII), Marcus Allen (Super Bowl XVIII), Ottis Anderson (Super Bowl XXV), Emmitt Smith (Super Bowl XXVIII), and Terrell Davis (XXXII).

Everyone but Anderson is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Celtics breeze to a comfortable win over Warriors 119-104

The Warriors lost for the 15th time in the last 16 games Thursday night in Boston. The final score was 119-104. The Celtics are now 19-5 at home for the season.

The Warriors knew that they would have to be at their best to beat the Celtics. They started well and had an early lead. The Celtics tied the game at 15 apiece early in the first quarter. They made two buckets to lead 19-15, and they never relinquished the lead from that point on until the end of the game.

The Celtics finished the first period leading 29-22. They went on a 12-2 run to gain the lead and were led by Gordon Hayward’s 15 points. The Celtics’ defense stifled the Warriors and held them to 22 points.

The Warriors offense just could not get anything going. At one stretch, they were three for 18 from the floor. The Celtics increased the lead to seventeen 46-29. The Warriors did respond, and behind D’Angelo Russell and Alec Burks, they cut the deficit to ten to finish the first half trailing 60-50.

Russell led the Warriors with ten, and Burks had nine. No other Warrior had more than five points in the half. Gordon Hayward finished with 17, and Jayle Brown had 13 to pace the Celtics.

The Celtics won the third period 31-29. The Warriors fell behind by fifteen and finished the quarter trailing by 12. The Celtics met every Warriors challenge. Alec Burks led the Warriors offense in the period. The Celtics defense held Russell in check.

Their scheme was to pressure Russell. The Warriors needed other players to step up. Alec Burks answered the call, but that was about the best the Warriors could do.

The Warriors could not close the gap in the final 12 minutes of the game. The Celtics outscored them by three to win 119-104.

Game Notes and stats- The Warriors shot 43% from the floor. They made 33 baskets in 77 tries. Their problem was that Boston took 88 shots and made 42. The Warriors hit 12 threes. The Celtics made 15. The Warriors were out rebounded 51-30. The Celtics had 19-second chance points. The Warriors had two.

D’Angelo finished with 22 points and was three for 11 from beyond the three-point arc. Burks had 18, and he made three threes. Damion Lee, who struggled with his shooting the last five games, regained his touch and added 11. Glenn Robinson had 11, Marquese Chriss nine, and Draymond green nine.

Gordon Hayward led the Celtic attack with 25. Marcus Smart had 21, and he connected on five threes. Jayson Tatum had 20, Jaylen Brown, who played at Cal, knocked down 18. The leading Celtic scorer, Kemba Walker, was held to 13.

The Celtics honored the memory of Kobe Bryant with a beautiful tribute before the game. Alec Burks also honored Kobe when he changed his uniform number from eight to 20.

The Warriors are now 10-38 fro the year. The Celtics improved to 32-15

The Warriors meet the Cavaliers in Cleveland Saturday night. The game will start at 5 pm.

Johnny B.Baker Jr, (Dusty) has landed in Houston. He is now the new manager of the Houston Astros, and this is a calming and healing effect as he is coming right after the biggest baseball scandal of our lifetime. The sign-stealing scandal that culminated in the firing of the manager and general manger of the Houston Astros, manager-to-be in New York Carlos Beltrán and implicated the name of some of the games biggest stars and some managers. As baseball continues their investigation there might be more shoes to fall.

Dusty is a winner he has managed,for 10 years with Giants, Cubs, Reds and Nationals with a total record of 840-715 a .540 percentage. But he was also a winner and a very good player who played the outfield for 19 years and retired in 1986 with the Oakland Athletics,the year when José Canseco won the American League Rookie of the Year, and when the A’s began their last great championship run.

He was always a team player,he won the National League pennant for the Giants in 2002 and took them to the World Series. As a player he was a good hitter, who ended with a .278 average. His best season 1981 with the Dodgers hit for .320 with 29 home runs and 97 runs batted in. Many times in Spanish,and as a player and manager later in the 1990’s when I was working for the Giants I always interviewed him in Spanish, which he is fluent. Was lucky to travel with the Giants towards the end of the 1990’s,he was always accessible and even after tough loses, which every manager encounters,he always had a kind word

The ultimate player manager, he is liked by the players,he is a manager that brings great enthusiasm to the game, he is humble and with the baseball knowledge ‘he bring to Houston that old school mentality. One of the most remembered things on Dusty’s career was when Hank Aaron (The Real and most beloved Home Run King) on April 8, 1974, he was on deck when Aaron hit home run 715 to pass Babe Ruth in career home runs.That was a well documented moment in history,which he always remembers and feels proud to have played along the great Hank Aaron.

With roots in California and here in the Bay Area one of the handful of players that have played for the A’s and the Giants. His last four years managing, where with the Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals he won between 90 to 97 games each year. This is also a great opportunity for Dusty with a team that together with the A’s are the two best clubs in the Western Division going into this season. It could be a great race.

Dusty Baker is exactly what the Astros needed, he brings that healing factor. He is not a computer manager, he is a human manager, and this is the best thing the Houston team has done since the scandal. Like attorneys would say “the Astros are trying to re-rehabilitate their image” and Dusty is the “hombre perfecto” for that job.

Felicidades Dusty, we will see you late March during the first home stand of the Oakland A’s as the Houston Astros are scheduled to visit following the first series of the season against the Minnesota Twins.

#1 The loss for Stanford (15-4) to Cal (8-10) certainly came at a big surprise as the Bears Paris Austin scored two free throws that clinched it for Cal 52-50.

#2 It was a battle and Stanford heard Cal’s footsteps all game long as Stanford took a 23-21 half time lead into the dressing room

#3 In the second half Cal clipped the Cardinal’s chances in the closing minutes of the game 31-27

#4 Cal had a 17-2 run on Stanford to catch up and although both teams scored a low total it was a cliffhanger all game long

#5 Stanford finds themselves in a very strange place on a two game losing streak coming off loses to USC and then Cal. The Cardinal face the Oregon State Beavers (12-8) they’ll be heavily relying on Oscar da Silva and Daejon Davis for tonight’s game.

#1 The Cal Bears (9-10) defeated the Stanford Cardinal (15-4) it was a game played at Haas Pavilion even though the Bears had the home floor the odds were stacked against Cal and they pulled it out 52-50.

#3 Cal went on a 17-2 run against Stanford and not only played catch up ball but the team really caught fire and proved the mind is a powerful thing were driven and won the game against an incredibly good school.

Warriors start road trip on sour note lose to Philadelphia 76ers 115-104

It was a very emotional night Tuesday when the Warriors met the Philadelphia Sixers in a game they would lose 115-104. Kobe Bryant, who passed away on Sunday, went to Lower Merion High School in the Philadelphia Area. The teams in the NBA, the fans, and everyone who loves sports were saddened by Kobe’s and his daughter’s deaths, as well as the other seven people on the helicopter. Kobe’s high school number 33 was featured on the court. The Sixers had a 33 second moment of silence for Kobe before the start of the game.

The Sixers won the tap and kept the ball in the backcourt for eight seconds to honor Kobe. The Warriors got the ball in the forecourt, and they took a 24-second violation to remember Kobe, too.

After these emotional moments, the game started for real. The Sixers had their big center, Joel Embiid, back in the lineup. Embiid was recovering from a hand injury. Embiid changed his jersey number from 21 to 24 to honor Bryant. The Sixers had retired the number to honor Bobby Jones, who was on the 1983 NBA Championship team. Jones agreed, and Embiid was able to honor Kobe.

The Warriors gave the Sixers all they could handle for the first 36 minutes of the game. The Sixers big men, Embiid, Ben Simmons, and Al Horford, wore down the Warriors defense and put the game away in the fourth quarter to win 115-104.

The Warriors won the first quarter 27-26. They were led by Marquese Chriss, Glenn Robinson, and D’Angelo Russell. The Warriors led 27-19, but the Sixers finished the first quarter on a 7-0 run.

The Sixers regained the lead 37-34. The Sixers’ behind the Raul Neto’s hot shooting increased the lead to nine 55-46. The Warriors fought back and finished the first half trailing 59-54. Russell led the W’s with 14. Chriss had 11, Robinson, and Alec Burks each had six. The Sixers’ Neto knocked down a career-high 19 points in the first half. Joel Embiid had 13, and Tobias Harris had ten.

The Warriors won the third quarter 28-27 but still could not cut the deficit. They were down 86-82, and they were within striking distance of the Sixers. However, things fell apart in the fourth quarter. The Warriors had no answers to contain big Ben Simmons. They did an excellent job of holding him to just two points in the first half. Simmons showed the Warriors why he is an All-Star.

He drove to the basket and made several easy layups. Embiid also broke down the Warriors defense. The Sixers’ defense showed up in the fourth quarter as they held the Warriors scoreless for the first four minutes and 15 seconds of the period. Russell broke the spell when he made a three-pointer. The Sixers increased the lead to sixteen 111-95. The Warriors made a run, but it was not enough as they lost again 115-104.

Game Notes and stats- The Warriors lost for 14th time in the last 15 games and are now 10-38 for the year. The Sixers improved to 31-17.

D’Angelo Russell played well again. He finished with 28 points, five rebounds, and seven assists. Marquese Chriss had 15 points and five rebounds. Glenn Robinson added 20 points. He made three threes in five tries. Alec Burks, coming off the bench, had 12. Draymond Green just missed a triple-double with nine points, nine rebounds, and 12 assists. The Warriors shot 43% from the floor, and they made 15 threes in 40 attempts.

Joel Embiid led the Sixers with 24. Neto, who averages about four points a game, did not score in the second half to finish with 19. Simmons had 17, Harris 10, Al Horford 12 points and 11 boards. Shake Milton had 11.

The Warriors meet the Boston Celtics Thursday night in Boston. The game will start at 4 pm.
