His name is Yoelkis Céspedes,he is 22 years old,half brother of ex-A’S,Red Sox,Tigers,Mets outfielder Yoenis Céspedes. Just like his older brother. Yoelkis plays the outfield. He is working out in the Bahamas 4 to 6 hours a day and hope to have a showcase coming in Arizona and Florida this March.

The younger Céspedes defected in June last year from the Cuban National Team that was in Canton,Ohio participating in the Cam-Am showcase. His debut was in 2015 when he hit .283 with 14 home-runs and stole 16 bases in 26 attempts. Participated in the WBC(World Baseball Classic)for Cuba,with Victor Victor Mesa and hit .250. Mesa was signed in 2019 by the Marlins.

Yoelkis Céspedes from the Gramna province of Cuba has been scouted for years,considered a five-tool player,faster and more athletic than his brother Yoenis,but with lower potential for home run power,remains a big international prospect.

“Es un orgullo que me comparen con mi hermano” -trans: “It’s a pride to be compared to my brother” said the young Yoelkis. It is unknown if he(like his brother)will release a video of his talents. Yoenis Céspedes began his career with the Oakland Athletics in 2012 and played for the Green and Gold until 2014 when the very popular left fielder was traded to the Boston Red Sox, since then he has played for two more teams, however he missed all of the 2019 season and could miss the entire 2020 season,his status(officially by the Mets) is unknown.

Suffered multiple ankle fractures in May 2019 at his ranch in Boca Ratón,Florida, during a non-baseball activity. During his seven year career Yoenis is a .274 hitter with 163 home-runs and 524 runs batted-in. One of the best and most accurate arms from left field in the game.

As far as Yoelkis Céspedes. Teams are lining-up and their scouts are anxious to see the youngest Céspedes. It could be very soon. The waiting game is on.

Barrracuda slow down Roadrunners in 6-3 victory

SAN JOSE, Calif- The San Jose Barracuda had a nice President’s Day weekend. They jumped out to an early lead and then took control of the game in the third period to defeat the Pacific Division leading Tuscon Roadrunners 6-3 on Monday evening at SAP Center.

San Jose have won two in a row after losing eight in a row. Tucson have lost five out of their last seven games are only one point ahead of Stockton for the top spot in the Pacific Division. They finished 2-4-0-1 on their road trip.

San Jose (16-25-3-2) drew first blood 27 seconds into the game. Jonny Brodzinski started a rush out of the ‘Cuda zone. Joachim Blichfled sent a pass from center ice that sprung Jeffery Viel on a breakaway. Viel made a deke to get Roadrunners goalie Ivan Prosvetov down before depositing a backhander into the back of the net for his ninth goal of the season goal.  It was the quickest goal of the season for the Barracuda.

“I had a lot of speed and it was a nice saucer pass from Blichey (Blichfeld). (I) just faked a shot and went back in. That was a pretty nice goal and it got us going at the start of the game,” said Viel.

The Barracuda doubled their 38 seconds later. Lukas Radil centered puck out in front from behind the net into the middle of a mad scramble. Lean Bergmann and Thomas Gregoire were in the middle of the scramble trying knock in the puck when Radil recovered it just to the left of the crease and poked it past Prosvetov for his fourth goal of the season at the 1:05 mark.

“I think quick getting on the forecheck and (getting) some offensive zone time, that allows everybody to get involved in the game early. Playing with a leads helps everybody. (It) helps the D, the goaltending a little bit. It was two good games for us this weekend,” co-head coach Jimmy Bonneau said.

Tucson (30-16-1-2) cut the lead in half with under six minutes left in the opening frame. Hudson Fasching knocked down Nick DeSimone, stealing the puck from him. He skated in and wired a wrist shot past ‘Cuda goalie Josef Korenar for his 17th goal of the season at the 14:08 mark.

San Jose outshot Tucson 13-11 in the opening 20 minutes.

Tucson scored the equalizer on the power play over five minutes into the second period. Andy Miele sent a cross ice pass over to Kyle Capobianco who fed it back up to the point over to Jordan Gross. The Roadrunners defenseman fired a slapshot over the pad of Korenar for his ninth goal of the season at the 5:43 mark.

San Jose regained the lead late in the middle frame. DeSimone found Maxim Letunov, who was playing in his first game back since being reassasigned by the Sharks, and he skated into the left slot before firing a wrist shot top-shelf into the right corner for his 11th goal of the season at the 16:28 mark.

Despite spending time with the Sharks recently, Letunov, (1G, 1A tonight), leads San Jose in points with 42 on the season.

“It’s been a great experience out there, the dream come true,” said the Moscow native about his time with the Sharks. “Not just playing in the first game but then scoring in the second (game) as well. Coming (back) down here there’s a lot of opportunities to play, (so I’m) just trying to work hard to deserve to go back up there.”

Tucson once again evened the score thanks to Fasching’s second goal of the night. Beau Bennett led a an odd man rush while on the penalty kill. Bennett sent a cross ice pass over to Fasching who tapped home the puck past Korenar for a short-handed goal, his 18th goal of the season, at the 17:40 mark.

Fasching now has six goals in six games against the ‘Cuda this season.

The tie wouldn’t last long as San Jose reagained their third lead of the game on a 5-on-3 power play. Halbgewachs had posession of the puck when he sent a pass out to Trevor Carrick at the right slot. The ‘Cuda defenseman rifled a bomb of a one-timer past Prosvetov for his ninth goal of the season 18:42 mark. Brodzinski received the secondary assist.

The three goals in a span of 1:46 ended a wild middle frame that saw Tucson out shot San Jose 9-7 in the period.

San Jose received an insurance goal late in the third period. Letunov found Carrick just above the left faceoff circle where Carrick blasted a shot that trickled past the 5-hole of Prosvetov for his 10th goal of the season and second of the night at the 13:36 mark.

“It’s weird. They kinda just been coming in waves for me. Not really changing much (to my game), just throwing it on net and sometimes they just happen to go in, get that lucky bounce. That was the case tonight,” Carrick said.

The ‘Cuda sealed the deal with an empty net goal from Viel, his second of the game and 10th goal of the season at the 14:32 mark.

Korenar finished the night 25 saves on 28 shots to earn his ninth win of the season. Prosvetov stopped 23 of the 28 shots he faced in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 1-for-3 on the power play. Tucson was 1-for-6.

San Jose is now 3-3 against Tucson this season and they snapped a three-game home losing streak.

Carrick’s goal snapped a 10-game goal-less draught. It also was his 200th AHL point. He is now second in the AHL among defenseman with his 10 goals.

San Jose has given up 10 short-handed goals this season.

Defenseman Jacob Middleton was reassigned back to down to the ‘Cuda by the Sharks and played in the game as he finished with a +1.

The announced attendance was 3,714.

UP NEXT: The Barracuda travel down to San Diego to take on the Gulls on Saturday 2/22 at 7:00pm at Pachenga Arena San Diego.

Short-handed Sharks Fall to Desperate Panthers 5-3

SAN JOSE–The desperate Florida Panthers started the first game of the dreaded three-team California gauntlet with a 5-3 win over the San Jose Sharks in a Monday matinee. Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves and Evgenii Dadonov, Mike Hoffman and Colton Sceviour scored for the Cats while Dylan Gambrell, Kevin Labanc and Timo Meier scored for San Jose who were coming off two-game road winning streak.

Florida avoided a three-game losing streak and now sits three points back of Philadelphia for the second Eastern Conference Wild Card spot.

The Sharks continue to be without a core group of players with Logan Couture, Tomas Hertl and now Erik Karlsson out with injury and Evander Kane in game two of a three-game suspension for an elbowing penalty Friday in Winnipeg.

They may add another player to the walking wounded after Antti Suomela exited the game after the second period after taking a hit from Josh Brown.

Dadonov opened the scoring for Florida when the Sharks defense loosened up enough for him to slip in and take a Frank Vatrano feed to beat Aaron Dell 4:52 into play. Gambrell picked up the equalizer, his fourth goal of the year, on a pass from Suomela right into the slot 11:30 into the period.

The Sharks fell behind 2-1 halfway through the game when Mike Hoffman picked off a d-to-d pass in his defensive end and went end-to-end before burying the puck 22nd goal of the year. A wild third period started with Colton Sceviour firing a puck on Dell, following up on his rebound and scoring at 10:04.

Kevin Labanc answered back with a strike with 5:26 left in regulation to open up a six minute span that saw teams swap four goals. Anton Stralman, Meier and Vincent Trocheck all scored down the stretch for the 5-3 final.

Next up for the Sharks is a four-game road swing through the Tri-State area, facing off against the New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, New York Islanders and Philadelphia Flyers before returning home to the Shark Tank to face the Devils once again February 27th.

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris:

#1 The Cal Bears (10-15) Matt Bradley finished in scoring on top with 22 points but the Bears once again fell short by five points in the loss to the ASU Sun Devils (17-8).

#2 The Bears Grant Anticevich scored 18 points second in Cal scoring Anticevich one to always push the envelope on offense

#3 Looking at both halves both teams played evenly in the first half ASU outscored Cal 32-31 and in the second half the Sun Devils once more outscored Cal 44-41.

#4 For the Sun Devils Remy Martin scored 22 points and Martin was able to score 15 in the last 11 minutes of the contest.

#5 Cal heads to Washington State (14-12) for a game in Pullman on Wednesday Morris sets this game up for us.

We might as well go to “baseball school”so we can learn more of the new rules.slowly but surely the National Pastime continue to go through a series of changes. These are the categories that will go into effect this 2020 season. For all fans pleasure and entertainment,here they are.

1-The Three-batter minimum. For all intent and purposes,this is “the one”.
All pitchers, starters and relievers now have to face at least three batters (or pitch until the inning is over) before they come out of a game. The only exception is an injury or illness that prevents the pitcher from being able to finish his three batters. Main effect of this rule will be on the specialist relievers (the ones used to face one batter for a favorable match-up) the perennial lefty coming out of the bullpen just to get a lefty out.

That is gone,there will be none of this beginning this season. Also could impact teams that use the “openers”, who are usually starters that are used just to pitch the first inning of a game.These “openers” are pitchers that start the game to match up specifically against the top of the opposing order. Starting this season an opener will have to face at least three batters even if he had a bad match-up in that start, –This three-batter rule is already on effect this current Spring Training Roster Limits.

2-Roster Limits: 26 man rosters.Teams active rosters are being increased from 25 to 26 players for the regular season (through August 31) and during postseason. Teams are limited to carrying a maximum of 13 pitchers.

3-Smaller Rosters in September:MLB is adjusting the size of September rosters to 28 players,including a maximum of 14 pitchers.

4-Two-way Player Designation: Totally new. A “two way player” somebody who can both hit and pitch, like Angels Shohei Otani or Reds Michael Lorenzen,who appears as a reliever and also plays the outfield.. The “two way player” has not been seen in MLB since the days of the legendary Babe Ruth*,the most famous of all “two way players”. This rule will let these players stay on the roster as a position player and pitch in games without counting their team 13 pitchers limit. If you designate someone as a “two way player” they have to stay that way through the end of the year.
*When Babe Ruth played in the 1910’s and 1920’s it took 1 hour and 51 minute on an average to complete a game.

5-Position Players Pitching:Position players are allowed to pitch only if a game goes to extra innings,or If their team is winning or loosing by more than six runs.During normal circumstances in a nine-inning game only the teams 13 designated pitchers (or two way players) are allowed to pitch.

6-The 27th man: What used to be the 26th man is now the 27th man, thanks to the new 26 man roster size.

7-Injured List and Option Periods: Pitchers and two-way players are returning to a 15-day injured list.That is once they are placed on the IL, they cannot be reinstated for 15 days. The IL (injured list) used to be 15 days for all players until the 2017 season,when it was reduced to 10 days. Position players will still have a 10 day IL under the new rules. Also,pitchers who are optioned to the Minor Leagues now have to remain there for 15 days rather than 10. The option period for position players remains at 10 days.

8-Challenge time: Managers now have 20 seconds to decide to challenge a play instead of 30.

Hay que regresar a la “escuela de béisbol” para aprender más de las nuevas reglas. Lentamente pero seguro el Pasatiempo Nacional continua con una serie de cambios. Estas son las categorías que se pondrá en práctica apartir de esta temporada 2020. Para deleite y entretenimiento de los aficionados,aqui están.

1-Enfrentar un Mínimo de Tres Bateadores(en efecto desde el Spring Training 2020) Este es el cambio más importante.
Todos los lanzadores, asi sean abridores ó relevistas, deben de lanzarle mínimo a tres bateadores ó acabar la entrada para poder ser relevados por otro lanzador. La única excepción a la regla será cuando un lanzador se lesione ó tenga una enfermedad que le impida lanzarle al mínimo de rivales ó terminar el inning,los tres bateadores. El máximo efecto sería en los relevistas especialistas, por ejemplo un pitcher zurdo que sale a enfrentarse a solo bateadores zurdos. Esto no existe para el 2020. La regla también puede afectar aquellos equipos que usan un “opener” -típicos relevistas que los usan para iniciar el juego. Ahora el “opener” tiene que enfrentarse a por lo menos tres bateadores,aún si las cosas no le salieron bien contra los bateadores a los cuales se enfrentó.

2-Cambios en los Rosters: La lista se expande a 26 jugadores, De lo que eran 25 el año pasado a 26 jugadores para el 2020 con un máximo de 13 que pueden ser lanzadores.

3-Rosters más Pequeños en Septiembre:. Ahora los equipos podrán tener solo un máximo de 28 peloteros,incluyendo un máximo de 14 lanzadores.

4-Designación de Jugadores Multifuncionales: Un jugador multifuncional es uno que lanza y batea, por ejemplo Shohei Othtani de LA Angels y Michael Lorenzen de los Rojos de Cincinnati.Babe Ruth*fue l primer famoso jugador multicuncional. Esto les permite mantenerse en la lista como “jugador de posición” por ser parte de la nómina de 13 lanzadores máximo que estan permitidos en el roster. Un jugador que es designado como multifuncional tiene que mantenerse así toda la temporada.
*Cuando Babe Ruth jugó en los 1910’s y 1920’s un encuentro tenía promedio de 1 hora 51 minutos.

5-Jugadores de Posición Lanzando: Para que un pelotero de cuadro ó jardinero pueda lanzar,el partido deberá estar en extra-innings ó con una diferencia de seis carreras, a favor ó en contra. Durante un juego normal de nueve entradas,solo los 13 jugadores inscritos como lanzadores ó jugadores multifuncionales podrán lanzar.

6-El Jugador 27: Cada equipo podrá agregar un jugador más a su roster regular, de 26 a 27 jugadores.

7-Lista de Lesionados y periodo de Opcionados: Lanzadores y jugadores “multifuncionales” tendrán un periodo mínimo de estancia en la lista de lesionados de 15 días, en vez de los 10 días en el pasado. Los jugadores de posición seguirán pasando a la lista de incapacitados durante 10 días. Al igual que con la lista
de lesionados los jugadores de posición deberán permanecer 10 días.

8-Tiempo de Manager para pedir un Reto: El tiempo de los managers(en el reloj)para retar una jugada através de la repetición será recortado de 30 a 20 segundos.

Barracuda shoot down Condors 5-2 snap 8-game losing streak

BAKERSFIELD, Calif- The San Jose Barracuda scored five unanswered goals to snap a season high eight-game losing steak in a 5-2 victory over the Bakersfield Condors on Sunday evening at Mechanics Bank Arena.

San Jose hadn’t won since January 17th when they beat Iowa 3-1 on the road. They have points in three consecutive games and now have 35 points. Bakersfield have lost five games in a row as they have fallen to sixth place in the Pacific Division during their slide.

Bakersfield (20-24-4-2) drew first blood in the first period. Jakob Stukel scored his fifth goal of the season at the 8:12 mark. Luke Esposito and and Keegan Lowe assisted on the goal.

San Jose (15-25-3-2) scored the equalizer just under three minutes later in what started a streak of five unanswered goals. Danil Yurtaykin led a 2-on-2 rush up the ice. He made a move around a Condors defender before firing a wrist shot that Condors goalie Shane Starrett kicked out to the middle where Manny Weiderer deposited the rebound into the back of the net for his second goal of the season at the 10:59 mark.

The Barracuda gained the lead at the end of the opening frame when Ivan Chekhovich won a battle along the boards and fed the puck over to Sasha Chmelevski. Chmelevski quickly threw it down to a wide open Jayden Halbgewachs along the right side of the net. Halbgewachs got Starrett to go down before skating around him and tapping home the puck past Starrett for his co-team leading 15th goal of the season at the 17:04 mark.

San Jose scored the only goal in the second period when Yutaykin centered a pass from behind the net out to Weiderer. His shot deflected off Dmitri Samorukov’s skate out to the left of the net where Jeremy Roy, who played up at forward for the first time in his pro career, cleaned up the rebound for his first goal of the season at the 12:57 mark. Roy’s first goal in 26 games this season was his first since March 2, 2019 at Bakersfield, totaling a 37 game goal-less draught.

The ‘Cuda out shot the Condors 22-15 through the first 40 minutes as they controlled the majority of the zone time.

San Jose put the game away with two goals within the first five minutes of the third period to squash any hopes of a Bakersfield comeback attempt.

Chmelevski used his speed to up the left wing and gave a drop pass to a pinching Thomas Gregoire in between the faceoff circles. The ‘Cuda defenseman hopped the puck over the stick of Brandon Manning and wired a wrist shot past Starrett on the shortside for his fourth goal of the season 53 seconds into the third period.

San Jose scored their fifth unanswered goal on the power play when Gregoire sent in a slap shot from the point that Lean Bergmann redirected past Starrett for his seventh goal of the season at the 5:02 mark. Halbgewachs received the secondary assist.

Nolan Vesey completed the scoring 43 seconds later when he scored his first goal of the season. Beau Starrett and Evan Bouchard received assists.

Zachary Sawchenko snapped a three-game losing streak by making 22 saves on 24 shots to earn his fourth win of the season. Starrett suffered his fourth-straight loss after allowing five goals on 36 shots.
