#1 The San Jose Sharks picked up their third win in four games defeating the Winnipeg Jets Saturday night 3-2. The Sharks Marcus Sorenson, Melker Karlsson and Timo Meier score one goal each.

#2 Jason Zucker of the Pittsburgh Penguins scored twice in his first game as a Penguin It was Zucker’s 15th and 16th of the season after coming to Pittsburgh in the 4-1 win  over the Montreal Canadiens.

Sharks Beat Jets 3-2 in Winnipeg; Sharks win three of last four games

The San Jose Sharks defeated the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 Friday, in Brent Burns’ 1,100th NHL game. Sharks goals came from Marcus Sorensen, Melker Karlsson and Timo Meier. Aaron Dell made 30 saves in the win. Jets goals came from Kyle Connor and Blake Wheeler, with Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck making 32 saves in the loss.

After the game, Sharks interim head coach Bob Boughner said:

You’re never going to come in and play the Jets and not give up some chances, with the team they have and the offense. But I thought we did some really good things away from the puck. I thought that we had guys climbing above and not giving too many odd-man rushes. And there were spurts in the game that we were really good defensively, and when they had their chances, Deller was there to make the big stop.

Timo Meier has three goals and four assists in the last six games, including the game-winner Friday. Of this streak, Evander Kane said: “He’s playing heavy. You know, he’s skating. He’s a big powerful guy with a good scoring touch. When he goes hard to the net, he can finish. So that was another example of that tonight.”

In the first period, the Sharks out shot the Jets 13-3. At 14:51, Marcus Sorensen scored in a chaotic scrum in front of Connor Hellebuyck. Assists went to Alexander True and Dylan Gambrell. The Jets challenged the goal for goaltender interference but the challenge was unsuccessful, giving the Sharks their first power play.

The second period was something of a reversal, with the teams even in shots at 11, but the Jets scoring twice.

Their first goal came on a power play at 8:21, with Evander Kane in the box for interference. From right in front of the net, Kyle Connor was able to put a shot between his legs and over Dell’s shoulder, into the top corner. Assists went to Blake Wheeler and Neal Pionk.

Blake Wheeler scored less than two minutes later. His shot went past a moving screen and into the top corner. Andrew Copp found him with a pass from the corner, and a second assist went to Nikolaj Ehlers.

The Sharks ended the second period on a power play when Josh Morrisey was called for holding Timo Meier. They started the third with 1:54 remaining on that power play. The did not get any shots on net in that power play.

At 5:18, Melker Karlsson did score, in a quick give and go play with Joel Kellman. The give and go had the Jets defense discombobulated enough that when Karlsson got to the front of the net and received the puck no one was in his way. Assists went to Kellman and
Stefan Noesen.

Timo Meier added another for the Sharks, just 1:29 later. Brent Burns sent the puck to the net where Kevin Labanc tried to get to it. Dmitry Kulikov was in his way so he couldn’t get control of it. The puck trickled out to the side of the blue paint, where Meier found it and put it in the net. Assists went to Labanc and Burns.

The teams played 4-on-4 at 6:55 when Marcus Sorensen went to the box for roughing against Jack Roslovic, and Roslovic went for cross-checking Sorensen. The Sharks killed Evander Kane’s second penalty of the game at 13:17 of the third, and held on to their lead for the rest of the period. The Jets pulled their goaltender with about two minutes to go. Those final minutes were marked by many good saves from Aaron Dell and some missed clearing opportunities for the Sharks, but they kept the puck out of the net.

The third period shot count was 16-11 Jets. The face-off contest went to the Jets 53%-47%.

The Sharks next play on Saturday in St Paul against the Minnesota Wild at 2:00 PM PT.

#2 The Washington Capitals got by the Colorado Avalanche in overtime as the Caps TJ Oshie deflected a shot for a goal with just 2:04 left in the game and came back from two goals down to win 3-2

#3 The Tampa Bay Lightning got a two goal win over the Edmonton Oilers. The Bolts Andrei Vasilevskly stopped 29 shots in the 3-1 win. Yanni Gourde scored on a break away at 13:01in the second period that ended a 35 game drought

#4 The Calgary Flames shutout the Anaheim Ducks 6-0 with two goals scored a piece by Mikael Backlund and Mark Jankowski. The Flames had goalie Cam Talbot who stopped 44 shots.

#5 Buffalo Sabers won on a squeaker 4-3 beating the Columbus Blue Jackets as Victor Olofsson scored his second goal at 2:44 in overtime for the win.

Stanford’s late rally falls short lose to Arizona State 74-69

PALO ALTO–The Stanford Cardinal met the Arizona State Sun Devils Thursday night at Maples Pavilion. The visiting Sun Devils came to Stanford with a record of 15-8 overall, and 6-4 in the Conference. ASU is the only Pac-12 team to make the NCAAs the last two seasons. ASU has won five of the last six games. The Cardinal, on the other hand, has lost five of the last six and their record coming into the game was 16-7.

ASU led for most of the game. Stanford’s offense came to life late in the second half to close the gap to just three points. The Sun Devils held on to win 74-69.

The Cardinal’s best player, Oscar Da Silva, who suffered a head injury in the game against Colorado last Saturday, was not available. Stanford’s head coach Jerod Haase started sophomore Lukas Kisunas in his place. The Cardinal fell behind 7-0 in the early going.

Spencer Jones knocked down a couple of threes to make it 7-6. The Sun Devils, taking advantage of Stanford turnovers increased the lead to 20-13. James Keefe and Jaiden Delaire each made a bucket to make it 20-17. It was at this point that ASU went on an 11-0 run. The Cardinal fought back as Daejon Davis, Delaire, and Tyrell Terry made plays to cut the deficit to seven 36-29 at the end of the first half of play.

In the second half, ASU was able to keep the Cardinal at bay for most of the period. The Cardinal made an 8-1 run to come within four 50-46. The Cardinal’s point guard Tyrell Terry started to get his game coming as he led the charge. ASU didn’t cave.

ASU’s Remy Martin, and I am not making his name up, made two key baskets to give ASU an eleven-point lead 68-57.  The Cardinal’s James Keefe and Tyrell Terry led the team on another run to close the gap to three 68-65 with 2:07 left to play.

It appeared the referees missed a call when Terry was bumped and the ball went out of bounds. The Cardinal had another opportunity to get closer but they turned the ball over to ASU when the inbound pass was knocked out of bounds.

Remy Martin followed with a bucket to make it 70-65 with about 40 seconds left in the game. James Keefe scored for Stanford and was fouled on the play. Keefe missed the free throw. Rob Edwards made two free throws, and Martin made another two-point shot to put ASU ahead 74-67. Tyrell Terry scored the last basket for Stanford. Time ran out, and the Cardinal dropped its sixth game in the previous seven 74-69.

Game Notes and Stats- With the loss, Stanford’s record drops to 16-8 overall and 5-6 in the Pac-12. Arizona improves to 16-8 overall, and 7-4 in the conference.

Tyrell Terry led the Cardinal with 24 points. Jaiden Delaire had 11, Spencer Jones nine, James Keefe, nine, and Bryce Wills eight. Stanford shot 52% from the floor. They made six threes in 21 tries.

ASU was led by Remy Martin’s 24 points. Alonzo Verge had 19, and Kimani Lawrence kicked in with 11. The Sun Devils shot 55% from the floor. They connected on five threes. They out rebounded the Cardinal 30-21. Each team committed 20 turnovers.

The Cardinal plays the University of Arizona on Saturday at Maples Arena. The Wildcats played the Cal Bears Thursday night. The Sun Devils play the Bears on Saturday.

On their first day of Spring Training the Houston Astros gave a press conference where owner Jim Crane, new manager Dusty Baker and players José Altuve and Alex Bregman were present. It was a Mea Culpa for the sins of stealing signs.

We had a great team meeting last night,” Altuve’s statement read. “I want to say that the whole Astros organization and the team feel bad about what happened in 2017. We especially feel remorse for the impact on our fans and the game of baseball. Our team is determined to move forward, to play with intensity and to bring back a championship to Houston in 2020.”

This is all well and done, everybody was expecting an apology and admission of wrong doing. A better idea was suggested by a good friend of mine who recently wrote a letter to the Houston team. This is what my friend wrote: “How about the Houston Astros players donate all the money they made cheating in the playoffs and in the World Series to St Jude hospital and Williamsport little league?

Probably that will help a little bit”. That is the best idea I have heard.The Astros players would not have to file for bankruptcy if they did this. it would be a huge move for their name sake as well as their employers,but most important they will be donating to a great cause. But that,obviously would have to come from the players hearts.

Sacramento based McClatchy Newspapers files for bankruptcy

The Demise of Print Media continues as McClatchy Co, Filed for Bankruptcy. They operated 20 daily newspapers in fourteen states This will end family control of America;s second largest local news company. Another punch in the gut to independent journalism.

By filing they hope to shed much of its pension obligations and about 55 percent of it’s debts would be eliminated as they now try to reposition for a digital future. Translation: Social Media claims another news print victim.

The publisher’s origins date to 1857 when it first began publishing a four-page paper in Sacramento, California, following the California Gold Rush. That paper became The Sacramento Bee. The Miami Herald,Kansas City Stars and dozens of newspaper who covered Major League Baseball as well as other sports are part of McClatchy. Many more jobs in journalism are being eliminated these days,courtesy of Silicon Valley.

Heat come from behind take down Barracuda in overtime 4-3

SAN JOSE, Calif- When you are rutted in a long losing streak, the breaks usually go against you. The Stockton Heat came back from a two-goal deficit in the third period and received the game winning goal from Luke Philp for a 4-3 overtime victory over the San Jose Barrauda on Wednesday evening at SAP Center.

Austin Czarnik won a battle along the boards behind the net and fished out a pass to a wide open Philp who tucked in a shot through the 5-hole of ‘Cuda goalie Josef Korenar for his 17th goal of the season at the 1:19 mark of overtime. It was Philp’s fourth game winning goal of the season for the Heat.

San Jose has lost a season worst eight games in a row and remain in the cellar in the Pacific Division. Stockton snapped a two game losing streak and are now tied for second with Colorado in the division with 58 points.

The Barracuda dominted the game for the first 40 minutes as they had held Stockton’s high octane offense to just 11 shots through two periods.

“That was our game. They didn’t win that game, we lost it that’s for sure,” said Jonny Brodzinski.

Stockton (25-12-3-3) drew first blood in the first period seconds after their power play opportunity had expired. Rob Hamilton intercepted a clearing attempt at the left blue line and and fired in a wrist shot that Byron Froese redirected past Korenar for his team leading 17th goal of the season at the 9:08 mark. Adam Ruzicka was creditied with the secondary assist.

San Jose (14-25-2-2) scored the equalizer late in the opening 20 minutes. Manny Weiderer sent Lukas Radil on a brekaway breakaway from center ice. Radil skated in and snapped a wrist shot top-shelf into the right corner for his third goal of the season at the 15:38 mark. Noah Gregor received the secondary assist.

“It was really a good job from all the guys on the line. I got a good pass and I go (and score) on the breakaway,” said Radil.

The Barracuda had the ice tilted in their favor in the first period as they peppered Heat goalie Jon Gillies with 17 shots on goal, including three point blank chances with 10 seconds left in the opening frame while San Jose was on the power play. The Heat had only four shots to their credit.

Good fortune came the ‘Cuda’s way in the second period after some misfortune from Stockton while they were on the power play. Justin Kirkland hit the post on a shot attempt into an empty net.

Moments after killing off the penalty to Trevor Carrick for high sticking, Noah Gregor led a 3-on-1 rush into the Heat zone. Gregor sent a cross ice pass over to Brodzinski, who played in his first home game since the birth of his daughter Lucy, at the right slot and he buried a wrist shot top-shelf past Gillies for his eight goal of the season at the 4:58 mark.

San Jose increased their lead just over two minues later. Seconds after their own power play opportunity had just ended. Jacob Middleton fed a pass over to Sasha Chemelevski who fired a shot initially saved by Gillies. Lean Bergmann, who was camped out to the right of the net, cleaned up the rebound as it sneaked underneath the pad of Gillies for Bergmann’s sixth goal of the season at the 7:10 mark.

“It felt pretty good,” said Bergmann about scoring his goal. “(To) come back from the injuries especially. It was a good feeling to get back in the flow again.”

Stockton cut the lead to one goal on the power play nearly halfway through the third period. Austin Czarnik sent a pass from the right boards over to Froese camped out in the slot. Froese made one move before drilling a shot past Korenar for his second goal of the game and 18th of the season at the 8:42 mark.

It’s a tough pill to swallow. I thought we dictated a lot of the play at different points in the first two periods. They (Stockton) didn’t really seem into the game either. I don’t think we really jammed it down their throats but they weren’t really going,” said co-head coach Michael Chaisson.

The Heat scored the eqaulizer with 1:25 remaining in the third period. Corey Schueneman’s shot from the right point was caromed off of Korenar out to Alan Quine, who was waiting on the doorstep, and he stuffed home the rebound with a backhander into an  empty net for his 12th goal of the season.

Gillies made 38 saves on 41 shots to earn his 12th win on the season. .Korenar finsished with 14 shots on 18 shots in yet another tough luck for the netminder.

“We had a lapse there in the third (period). Right now that’s not a great look for this organization, this group and these individual players,” said Chiasson.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 0-for-5 on the power play. Stockton was 1-for-4.

Bergmann’s second period goal snapped a 13-game goal-less draught for the Swedish forward. His last goal before that came back on November 23, 2019 in a game against the Colorado Eagles.

Brodzinki snapped an 11-game goal-less draught with his second period goal.

Froese now has nine points (4G, 5A) in nine games against the ‘Cuda this season.

The announced attendance was 2,214.

UP NEXT: The Barracuda travel down to Bakersfield to take on the Condors on Sunday 2/16 at 5:00pm at Mechanics Bank Arena.
