LAS VEGAS-The Las Vegas Raiders (3-2) seemingly upset over the distraction of the week of Coach Jon Gruden’s comments up here, played just that way today losing 20-9 to the Chicago Bears (3-2).

Khalil Mack, the former Raiders linebacker, played another intense game against his former teammates making key sacks of QB Derek Carr when the Raiders needed some big plays made. For Carr Sunday 22-35, 206 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception.

It was very apparent that the team was very distracted as they really sputtered on the offense today.

On the defensive side of the ball it appeared that the Raiders were pretty solid most of the game , they just had a few key opportunities where Bears quarterback Justin Field’s running backs made some big plays to score. Fields threw 12-20, 111 yards, and one touchdown.

The Raiders will prepare for the big game next week against the rival Denver Broncos , who came off a loss at Pittsburgh today.

Cardinals stay undefeated with 17-10 defensive win over 49ers

GLENDALE, Ariz.–It was a battle of the defenses down in the desert.

In the end it was the Arizona Cardinals defense that came through en route to a 17-10 win over the San Francisco 49ers in a NFC West battle on Sunday afternoon at State Farm Stadium.

San Francisco have lost three games in a row. Arizona remained the NFL’s only undefeated team as they haven’t started out 5-0 since 1974, and the fifth time in franchise history, when the franchise was in St. Louis.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Trey Lance, the third pick in this year’s draft, made his first NFL start due to Jimmy Garopollo’s calf injury. After a nice run for 14 yards resulting in a first down and completing a 16 yard pass to fullback Kyle Juszczyk. second pass attempt over threw Travis Benjamin as Cardinals safety Budda Baker was playing center field and made the interception.

Arizona (5-0) capitalized on the turnover. Quarterback Kyler Murray led an eight play, 66 yard drive that resulted in a one yard touchdown run by James Connor. The touchdown was set up when Murray threw a swing pass to Rondale Moore end around run for 26 yards to the 49ers one yard line.

San Francisco (2-3) had their second possession stalled at the Arizona 33 yard line when Lance’s quarterback keeper was stopped by Arizona’s swarming defense.

The 49ers were also without their Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle as the team placed him on injured reserved with his own calf injury that will sideline him for at least two more additional games.

Arizona went up 10-0 late in the first half when Matt Prater kicked a 21 yard field goal with 5:27 left in the second quarter.

Lance didn’t get any help from his receivers during the first half. Deebo Samuel wasn’t able to catch a ball thrown to him behind the line of scrimmage that resulted in a big loss. Mohamed Sanu dropped a pass through his hands that would have been a first down on the 49ers fourth possession.

The 49ers had a chance to tie the game early in the second quarter as Lance led the offense on a 13 play, 93 yard drive where they had first and goal inside the five yard line. On fourth and goal, Lance scrambled to right but was stopped at the one yard line by Cardinals linebacker Isiah Simmons as the Niners turned the ball over on downs.

Nick Bosa recorded his fifth sack of the year when he sacked Murray for a 13 yard loss with 26 second left in the second quarter, that helped stop the final drive of the half for the Cardinals. Arizona tried a 61 one yard field goal to end the half but Prater missed badly wide right.

Penalties plagued the 49ers on offense in the second half. They had five holding penalties, (three on the first drive in the second half that resulted in a punt) and a false start.

San Francisco finally got on the board late in the third quarter. Lance pitched the ball Samuel and the wide receiver made nice move to run for a 13 yard touchdown to cut Arizona’s lead to 10-7.

Lance led the six play, 59 yard drive with 1:42 left in third quarter.

San Francisco went for a fourth and one near midfield with under 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter but a sneak by Juszczyk who took the snap under center was stopped a yard short the Cardinals defense.

The Cardinals defense had pressure on Lance for most of the second half altering his throws and tipping balls to the ground.

Arizona scored a late touchdown in the fourth quarter when Murray found DeAndre Hopkins on a fade route inside the end zone as Hopkins leaped over 49ers corner back Josh Norman to put the Cardinals up 17-7 with 5:13 left.

San Francisco received a 47 yard field goal from Joey Slye with 4:12 left to cut the lead to a one score game. However, the 49ers never got the ball back as Arizona made two first downs on their ensuing possession to close out the game.

Lance finished 15 for 29 with 192 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. He led the 49ers in rushing 89 rushing yards on 16 carries as head coach Kyle Shanahan tailored the offense with plenty of run calls for the rookie quarterback.

Murray finished the game 22 for 31 with 291 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.

Hopkins led all wide receivers with six catches and 87 yards with one touchdown. Samuel led the 49ers in receiving with three catches for 58 yards on nine targets.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco was 3-11 on third down conversions. Arizona was 3-10.

Cardinals tight end Maxx Williams was injured in the second quarter after a reception with a lower body injury after receiving a tackle by Emmanuel Mosley. He was carted off the field and did not finish the game.

This was the first game that Arizona’s offense had back to back three and outs.

UP NEXT: San Francisco has a bye in week six. They return to action on Sunday 10/24 as they host the Indianapolis Colts at 5:20pm at Levi’s Stadium.

San Francisco 49ers week 5 podcast with Joe Hawkes: Lance to start today for injured Garoppolo; Murray throwing lights out for Cardinals

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance and head coach Kyle Shanahan converse on the game plan during the second half against the Seattle Seahawks on Sun Oct 3, 2021 at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara. Lance will start against the Arizona Cardinals Sun Oct 10, 2021 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. (photo from AP News)

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 Joe, San Francisco 49ers (2-2) quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo rested on Thursday sitting out practice as the 49ers get ready to face the Arizona Cardinals (4-0) at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. According to head coach Kyle Shanahan Garoppolo will rest for today’s game and Trey Lance will get the start .

#2 Garoppolo’s practice sessions if any has been very limited and Garoppolo has said that his calf injury still hurts to the point where he can’t push off and throw a pass.

#3 Shanahan said he wants to protect Garoppolo and George Kittle telling the media “sometimes you have to protect them from themselves” Shanahan said that Kittle is doubtful for today’s game in Arizona as well. What will it be like without Garoppolo and Kittle in the line up?

#4 Lance has looked good in practice and the few snaps he’s taken in the regular season how much of a test will this be with Lance being under center and starting the game against the Cardinals today?

#5 The Cardinals as a team that are a big test in of itself as they are 4-0 and quarterback Kyle Murray has been leaving defenses flat footed when he runs the keeper. Murray in Sunday’s last game against the Los Angeles Rams threw for 268 yards, two touchdowns and wasn’t intercepted and won the game convincingly 37-20. Missing some of the players to injuries will the 49ers be headed into a hornet’s nest today?

Urias comes up huge at the plate and on the mound in Dodgers win 9-2

Los Angeles Dodgers starter Julio Urias leans over the Dodgers dugout railing along the first base side at Oracle Park in San Francisco during game 2 of the NLDS on Sat Oct 9, 2021 (@Dodgers photo)

By Jeremy Kahn

SAN FRANCISCO-Julio Urias came with the biggest hit for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and it helped the defending World Champions get even.

Urias singled to right field immediately after Kevin Gausman intentionally walked A.J. Pollock to get Urias, and the plan backfired, helping the Dodgers to a 9-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants before a sellout crowd of 42,275 at Oracle Park.

It’s a good feeling, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. It’s interesting how the narrative changes from game to game. Right now, it’s a three-game series, we have home-field advantage and we have Max (Scherzer) on the mound. I like where we’re at.

With the victory by the Dodgers, it tied up the National League Division Series between the two longtime rivals.

Obviously looking forward to turning the page on tonight’s game and getting ready for Los Angeles,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “It was not our best effort tonight. Dodgers just swung the bats better than us, made more pitches than us, made more plays than us.

Mookie Betts followed up the Urias single with one of his own that scored Pollock; however, Gausman was able to get out of the inning by striking out Corey Seager to end the inning.

Chris Taylor, who sent the Dodgers into the Division Series, when he hit a two-run walk-off home run off of Anthony Reyes on Wednesday night, led off the inning with a double off of Gausman and scored the first run of the game for the Dodgers.

Urias, who went 20-3 during the regular season pitched the first five innings for the Dodgers, as he allowed one run on just two hits, walking one and striking out five, as the series heads to Dodger Stadium tied up at a game apiece.

I felt good, Urias said. I thought the pitches were working really well. It is the fifth or sixth time I have seen them so it is a little bit trickier to get through that lineup, but I felt good Offensively the team put some runs and all in all it was a good game.

Gausman, who was making his first ever postseason start went 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, walking three and striking out seven. This was not the first postseason appearance for Gausman, as he appeared in four games in the 2014 postseason for the Baltimore Orioles and in 2018 for the Atlanta Braves.

I mean I made, I thought I made a pretty good adjustment after the second inning, Gausman said. After then, I felt like I kind of got in my zone a little bit and retired a lot of hitters in a row. Obviously, I wish I would have got through that sixth inning.

The Giants cut the Dodgers lead in half in the bottom of the second inning, as Wilmer Flores led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a Brandon Crawford single. Flores then went to third on an Evan Longoria fly out to Taylor in centerfield and then scored on a Donnie Solano fly out to Taylor.

Unfortunately, that is all that the Giants muster against Urias, and finally in the top of the sixth inning, the Dodgers broke the game open from an unlikely source this season; however, a former Most Valuable Player.

With the bases loaded and one out, Cody Bellinger, who won the National League Most Valuable Player in 2019, and who was mired in a season long slump after being injured earlier in the year, came with a two-run double that gave the Dodgers a commanding 4-1 lead and then scored Pollock hit a two-run double of his own that gave the Dodgers a commanding 6-1 lead.

Crawford picked up his second run batted in of the series, as he singled to right field to score LaMonte Wade, Jr., who came off the bench to pinch hit for Austin Slater and drew a walk against Joe Kelly.

Mookie Betts came up with the defensive play of the night that killed the Giants rally that ended the bottom of the sixth inning.

Sometimes you just do things you can’t really explain, Betts said of his play. And that was just one of them.

Crawford singled to score Wade, Jr., however, on the play, Wilmer Flores, who was on first base try to test Betts and go to third, but Betts made a perfect throw to Justin Turner to get Flores and not only end the inning but the threat as well.

Yeah, 100 percent, Flores said. I just thought the ball was more in the corner, No, it was my decision.

Will Smith then greeted Zack Littell rather rudely, as he launched a solo home run deep into the San Francisco night on the first pitch that Littell allowed in the top of the eighth inning.

Taylor and Pollock each picked up singles in between Bellinger, who struck out for the third time on the evening.

Matt Beaty came up with a pinch-hit single that scored Taylor and after Jarlin Garcia came on to replace Littell, Seager singled to right field to score Pollock.

The usual stellar Giants bullpen was anything but that on this night, as the quintet of Dominic Leone, Jake McGee, Littell, Garcia and Kervin Castro pitched the final 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, walking just one and striking out just two.

The quartet of Joe Kelly, Brusdar Graterol, Corey Knebel and Phil Bickford pitched the final four innings, allowing one run on three hits, walking one and striking out three.

Buster Posey was a bright spot for the Giants despite the seven-run loss that tied up the series, as the veteran catcher went 3-for-4 on the night against Dodgers pitching.

NOTES: When Posey singled in the bottom of the sixth inning, it was the 54th career hit postseason hit for him, passing former teammate Pablo Sandoval.

When Posey caught the shutout in Game 1 of the NLDS against the Dodgers, it was the 13th time that the Giants won a game via the shutout, by far the most in MLB history, this according to Elias Sports Bureau. The 13 shutouts are five ahead of Yadier Molina (8) and six ahead of Yogi Berra (7). In his career, Posey has been a part of exactly half of the Giants postseason shutouts in team history.

Logan Webb became just the fourth Giants pitcher ever to strikeout 10 or more in his playoff debut, joining Carl Hubbell in Game Three of the 1933 World Series versus the Washington Senators, Tim Lincecum in Game One of the 2010 NLDS versus the Atlanta Braves and Jonathan Sanchez in Game Three of the 2010 NLDS. In all of those instances, the Giants won the World Series.

UP NEXT: Alex Wood will start Game 3 for the Giants of the NLDS against the Dodgers on Monday night at Dodger Stadium. During the 2021 season, the Giants were 12-2 with Wood on the mound after a loss. Scherzer will make his second postseason startfor the Dodgers in 2021, as he went 4.1 innings, in the Wild Card game on Wednesday night.

Webb tangles Dodgers in Game 1 win 4-0

San Francisco Giants pitcher Logan Webb seems to be yelling “Your Dog gone right” in the sixth inning after striking out Los Angeles Dodgers hitter Trea Turner in the top of the sixth inning in game 1 of the NLDS at Oracle Park Fri Oct 8, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Jeremy Kahn

In his first ever playoff start, Logan Webb looked like a veteran instead of someone on the biggest stage for the first time in his Major League career.

Webb pitched the first 7.2 innings, allowing zero runs on five hits, not walking a batter and striking out 10 and the San Francisco Giants defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0 in Game One of the National League Division Series at Oracle Park.

The Rocklin native left the mound after he allowed a two-out single to Mookie Betts with two outs in the top of the eighth inning.

Buster Posey hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning off of Dodgers starter Walker Buehler that bounced off the water-spraying pillar on the right field arcade on a 3-0 pitch that gave the Giants an early 2-0 lead.

The home run by Posey was his first in the postseason since Game 4 of the 2012 World Series off of Max Scherzer, then of the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit.

Webb got help from his defense in the top of the fourth inning, as Tommy La Stella mde a dazzling stop with his glove, flipped the ball to Brandon Crawford, who then threw to Wilmer Flores to complete the double play on the ball hit by Justin Turner that ended the inning.

La Stella also came up big at the plate, as he picked up two hits on the evening.

Posey helped out Webb immensely from his spot behind the plate, as the veteran, who sat the 2020 season to care for the twin girls that he and his wife adopted.

Just having him back there, honestly, Webb said. “Hell calm me down.

Webb, who helped lead the Giants to their first division title since 2012, last lost against the Colorado Rockies on May 5 at Coors Field.

Kris Bryant hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Giants a 3-0 lead, and then Crawford closed out the scoring, as he launched a solo home run into the Dodgers bullpen in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Bryant, who helped lead the Chicago Cubs to their first World Championship in 108 years, went 3-for-3 at the plate.

Walker Buehler went the first 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, walking just one and struck out five.

“Obviously it’s on me to try to create some momentum and I kind of sucked that out of our dugout,” Buehler said.

NOTES: This is the Giants first appearance in the playoffs since they lost to the Cubs in the 2016 NLDS and their 27th appearance since 1900 and 13th time since moving to California in 1958. As for the Dodgers, this is their ninth consecutive appearance in the postseason, as they are the defending World Champions.

In Giants’ playoff history, the team has an overall
record of 26-12 in Game 1 action since 1903 (17-7 in SF era) and 5-3 in Division Series Game 1s…the Giants have won seven of their last eight Game 1s dating back to the 2012 World Series.

UP NEXT: Kevin Gausman will take the mound for the Giants in Game 2, while the Dodgers will send left-hander Julio Urias to the hill on Saturday night.

Sun Devils Overwhelm Stanford 28-10

By Barbara Mason

After handing Oregon their first loss of the season, the Stanford Cardinals will be taking on another ranked team at Sun Devil Stadium. Arizona State is ranked at #22 and highly favored in this game. The temperature was at 92 degrees today and this evening should be just perfect for a Friday night contest.

Arizona has had one win over #20th ranked UCLA and lost to #23rd ranked BYU. With a record of 4-1 Arizona’s three other wins were against unranked teams.

Stanford has disposed of two ranked teams; Oregon and USC. Although the underdogs, can Stanford take out another ranked team? Stanford will be relying on quarterback Tanner McKee running back Nathaniel Peat and wide receiver Elijah Higgins.

Arizona will show case quarterback Jayden Daniels, Rachaad White and at running back Ricky Pearsall. Despite not being the top dog in this game, they were not favored at all in the Oregon game.

Arizona drew first blood driving for 87 yards and the touchdown, taking the early 7-0. Stanford would answer by driving into Arizona territory culminating in a McKee to Higgins pass for seven yards and the touchdown tying this game at 7. Arizona came back taking the lead 14-7 to end the first quarter. Their second touchdown was a five yard rush by Rachaad White.

At 10:24 in the second quarter Arizona would find the end zone for the third time in this game taking a commanding lead 21-7. Elijhah Badger ran for 22 yards, the Arizona stars rising to the occasion.

At the half the score was 21-7 and the Sun Devils were giving Stanford all that they could handle.

Stanford kicked a 32 yard field goal in the third quarter. They very nearly kept Arizona off the scoreboard in the quarter. As the quarter came to an end Arizona would score a defensive touchdown when McKee threw an interception for a pick six. The Sun Devils now led 28-10.

Another pick for Arizona in the fourth quarter and Stanford was all but done with 5:05 left in the game. The final score was 28-10.

Next up for Stanford is Washington State Saturday October 16th. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 PM.

Warriors Hang On to Beat Lakers 121-114

By Barbara Mason

Friday night the Golden State Warriors took on the Los Angeles Lakers at Chase Center. The Lakers have lost both of their pre-season games while Golden State has a 2-0 record in the pre-season.

All eyes will be on Jordan Poole who has had some great play offensively and defensively in Golden States first two games. He will be an important part in the regular season for the Warriors. After three years with the team Poole is proving that he can support Steph Curry. He has steadily improved over the years and this year could be a real breakout for him.

After the first quarter the Lakers had taken a 25-21 lead. Curry had twelve points in the quarter, the only starter that had scored in the game so far. Bjelica had 5 points off the bench.

At the half the Warriors led by the score of 59-49. Kent Bazemore had high points for the Lakers with 11. Steph Curry had 20 points and Jordan Poole came away with 14.

The Warriors continued to pour it on leading 81-60 with just under five minutes left in the third quarter. Both Curry and Poole were having a banner game.

After leading by as much as twenty points, the Lakers cut the Warriors lead down to four in the fourth quarter. With under four minutes left in the game the Lakers had cut the Warriors lead to a single point.

The final three minutes was a medley of turnovers, missed shots and everything you don’t want to see in a basketball game. The Warriors pulled it together at the end and won the game by the score of 121-114. Nine bench players scored for Golden State in the final quarter.

Steph Curry finished with 30 points and Jordan Poole with 28. Moody had a great game with 10 points off the bench.

With a 3-0 record in the pre-season next up for the Warriors will be another meeting with the Lakers in Los Angeles Tuesday Oct 12. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30.
