Toronto Outplays Golden State 119-100

By Barbara Mason

Warriors rookie Jonathan Kuminga had a banner night against the Toronto Raptors shooting for 26 points.

The Golden State Warriors (24-6) took on the Toronto Raptors (14-16) at Scotiabank Arena Saturday night. The Warriors starters for the most part got the night off. The Raptors would not be seeing Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins or Jordan Poole in this game. It would not be even a contest as the Raptors would win easily 119-100.

The first quarter was all Raptors leading by the score of 31-18. Toronto led by 13 going into the second quarter and led by 63-42 at the half. The Warrior bench, playing the entire game, was working hard but the Raptors were having a great night playing some excellent ball.

The only starter on the floor was Kevon Looney. There were only nine players dressed for Golden State in this game. The star of the first half was rookie Jonathan Kuminga with 12 points.

The third quarter was more excellence by the Toronto Raptors winning every quarter so far in this game. Toronto’s VanVleet (27 pts), Barnes (21 pts), and Boucher (11 pts) were all over the Warriors bench in the quarter. This was some invaluable experience for the Golden State bench and some of these guys were coming through with flying colors.

After three quarters Kuminga had 21 points which led the team. He had a great shooting game but a disappointing stat in rebounds with only 1 and 6 turnovers something that he will be working hard to improve.

The Raptors finished the Warriors off in the fourth quarter. Golden State had a good quarter outscoring Toronto 31-23. We got to see the future Warriors especially Kuminga who finished with 26 points. It was a lot of fun watching him attack the rim and 4 of 6 from downtown.

“There’s a lot of tape for our young players to watch” said Warrior head coach Steve Kerr after the game. “I thought we played better in the second half and were more competitive” he said.

Monday night the Warriors will be back home taking on the Sacramento Kings at Chase Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: 49 years without El Cometa de Puerto Rico

49 Years without El Cometa de Puerto Ri

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

This December 31, 2021, marks the 49th anniversary of the great Roberto Clemente plane crash on board a mercy mission flight he chartered to Nicaragua.

Roberto Clemente was the 11th player, among a total of 32 (to date) in major league baseball history to reach the magic 3,000 hit plateau. His 3,000 hit on September 31, 1972, was his last. Not by design but by fate. Just three months after that 3,000 hit (a double to left field at Three Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh against New York Mets lefty Jon Matlack, who was the NL Rookie of the Year that same season ) Roberto Clemente died, when the plane he chartered with friends on a mercy mission crashed soon after take-off from Puerto Rico.

The plane was loaded with aid to the people of Managua, Nicaragua, which suffered a terrible earthquake of 6.3 magnitudes that killed and injured dozens of thousands, just a week earlier to Clemente’s plane crash.

Roberto’s best friend in baseball was his teammate with the Pittsburgh Pirates and catcher Manny Sanguíllen, who told me during an exclusive telephone interview (published in Sports Radio Service last year) he could have easily joined Roberto on that fateful flight, but for reasons he could not control, never did.

During his rookie season (1955) with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Roberto wore No.13, but when center fielder Earl Smith parted ways with the Pirates, Clemente took No.21 which was used by Smith. Today that number 21 is one of the most famous numbers ever used by a player during a stellar Hall of Fame career. Just like all players (especially black players) love to wear No.42 during Jackie Robinson Day, over 30% of Hispanic players in MLB are very proud to wear #21 on Roberto Clemente Day.

Although he played for 18 years, was selected to 15 All-Star Games, won four Batting Titles, 12 Gold Glove Awards, won the National League MVP Award, and the World Series Award, the Press never gave him the credit he deserved.

Had 3,000 hits at the time of his death and a .317 combined batting average, but he was black and Puerto Rican so the racist media had “two strikes” on him, since his debut in the Major Leagues. Some in the media called him Bobby, but he hated that, he always said “my name is Roberto and that is how I want to be called”; he was a very proud man.

During his last season in1972 (in a visit to San Francisco to play the Giants at Candlestick Park) I witnessed a Pittsburgh writer shout in the press box after Clemente struck out, the following: “send him back in a banana boat!” Imagine all the verbal abuse this man had to withstand, to play baseball, one if not, the most difficult game. Baseball is one (if not the most) difficult team sport to master.

Most baseball fans love to see a guy hit a ball 450 feet over the fence. I am proud to say that I saw Roberto Clemente play, and hit and drive in runs, and play defense like nobody else. His instinct was acute and seldom did he have to dive for a ball in the outfield, he knew how to play the outfield.

His arm and accuracy on his throws were legendary. Many superstars of that era like Willie Mays, Stan Musial (just to mention a couple) have statues erected in the cities/ballparks where they played, but Roberto Clemente is in a class by himself, he has a statue at PNC Park in Pittsburgh and a bridge named after him, The Roberto Clemente Bridge, also known as the Sixth Street Bridge, over the Allegheny River in the Steel City, as well as Statues in the South Bronx, New York, a city with the largest population of Puerto Ricans, as well as a Statue at the entrance of Ciudad Deportiva Stadium in Carolina, Puerto Rico, the city where he was born.

We at the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum are very proud to have Roberto Clemente among our greats enshrined forever, he was a great man. Among our numerous exhibits and displays for over two decades, Roberto is still the most popular Latino player and fans are always inquisitive about Roberto Clemente’s history and especially the way he left us, helping people that he didn’t know in a country that was not his own. I like to end with a baseball quote as we remember the Cometa de Puerto Rico.

There are many, many baseball quotes about Roberto Clemente, but my favorite is by a gentleman, in my humble opinion, the best play by play baseball broadcaster who ever lived, who said: “Roberto Clemente could field the ball in New York and throw out a guy in Pennsylvania.” -Vin Scully Brooklyn Dodgers and Los Angeles Dodgers Play by Play.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Felíz Navidad y Próspero Año Nuevo.

Grizzlies clobber Kings 124-105; Sac has lost four of last five games

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO–The Kings were back in action against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night at home. The Kings last played on Wednesday when they took on the Washington Wizards.

The Kings handled the Wizards, defeating them 119-105. However, on Friday, the Kings were significantly short-handed. Kings head coach Alvin Gentry had tested positive for Covid earlier this week, and many staff members and players had to enter protocols as a result.

The players who missed Friday’s matchup were De’Aaron Fox, Davion Mitchell, and Alex Len. The short-handed Kings would try their best against the Grizzlies but ultimately fell 124-105.

In the first quarter, the Kings and Grizzlies both got off to a solid start on the offensive end. However, neither team’s defense looked outstanding as the shots fell for both teams. The Kings scored 31 points in the first quarter as the Grizzlies put up 29.

In the first quarter, the severely short-handed Kings got a much-needed lift from Harrison Barnes as he led the game with eight points. On the other hand, the Grizzlies got six points from De’Anthony Melton.

It was a very inconsistent quarter for the Kings in the second quarter. The Kings played great in the first half of the quarter. However, as the quarter came to a close, the Kings unraveled. The Kings built a 50-35 lead with 5:50 left in half, but it was short-lived.

The Kings lost the lead almost as quickly as they made it by the sloppy defense and unnecessary turnovers. The Kings had nine turnovers in the second quarter and 11 in the game, leading to 17 points so far. The Kings were outscored by the Grizzlies 29-25 in the second quarter.

The Kings were led by Harrison Barnes in the first half, who scored 15 points. Dillion Brooks led the way in the first half for the Grizzlies with 13 points. The Grizzlies took their 58-56 lead into the second half against the Kings. The Kings would need to clean up the messy play in the second half to have a chance at winning the game.

In the third quarter, the Kings meltdown continued. The Kings allowed the Grizzlies to score 33 points in the third quarter, but that wasn’t the biggest problem. The Kings offense only scored 19 points in the third. So, the Kings were left with a massive deficit heading into the final quarter 91-75.

In the fourth quarter, the Kings showed some heart but ultimately fell to the Grizzlies 124-105. The Grizzlies outscored the Kings 33-30 in the final quarter to finish off the blowout of the Kings. The Kings held their own in the first half but could not contain the duo of Jaren Jackson and Dillon Brooks, who had 21 and 23 points respectively.

The Kings were led in defeat by Tyrese Haliburton, who scored 21 points. It was a disappointing game for the Kings, who were also short-handed due to Covid.

Up Next: The Kings stay home to take on the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday at 3 PM PST at Golden One Center.

Reign rule over Barracuda in 7-4 win

The San Jose Barracuda has had their struggles as they lost to the Ontario Reign at the Toyota Center in Ontario on Fri Dec 17, 2021 (image by the San Jose Barracuda)

by Marko Ukalovic

ONTARIO, Calif, — The road has not been kind to the San Jose Barracuda of late.

The Ontario Reign scored five unanswered goals en route to a 7-4 victory over their NorCal rival on Friday evening at Toyota Arena.

San Jose had its two-game winning streak snapped. Ontario have won three out of its last four games and sit in second place in the Pacific Division with 29 points.

San Jose has been outscored 17-5 in their past two road games.

Ontario (14-5-0-1) drew first blood early in the first period. Austin Wagner intercepted a clearing attempt from Cole Moberg in the neutral zone. Wagner skated around the ‘Cuda defense and slid a shot past the five-hole of ‘Cuda goalie Alexei Melnichuk for his fourth goal of the season at the 2:51 mark.

The Reign doubled their lead more than halfway through the opening frame. Aidan Dudas made a drop pass to T.J. Tynan who blasted a one-timer past Melnichuk for his fourth goal of the season at the 12:50 mark.

Tynan has 11 points in his last 10 games for the Reign.

Ontario scored its third unanswered goal with 35 seconds left in the period. Valdimir Tkachev fed a pass back up to the point and Blake Siebenaler sent in a seeing eyed wrist shot past Melnichuk for his first goal of the season.

Ontario out shot San Jose 14-7 in the first period as the dominated play the entire period.

The Reign kept the route going early in the second period. Siebenlaer sent in the puck from the red line that took a tricky bounce off the boards out in front of the faceoff circles where Tyler Madden shot the puck into an empty net for his eighth goal of the season at the 2:18 mark.

Ontario scored its fifth unanswered goal on the power play. Jaret Dolan-Anderson centered a pass from behind the end line out to Gabriel Vilardi who beat Melnichuk with a wrist shot for his third goal of the season at the 5:31 mark.

San Jose (8-12-1-0) has given up a power play goal to the opposition for the ninth straight game.

Melnichuk was replaced by Zachary Sawchenko to start the second period. Melnichuk made 11 saves on 14 shots.

The Barracuda broke through on the scoreboard on the power play halfway through the middle frame. John Leonard sent cross ice pass over to the Sasha Chmelevski who ripped a wrist shot past Reign goalie Matthew Villalta for his fourth goal of the season at the 10:18 mark.

San Jose scored its second straight power play goal on a five-on-three man advantage. Chmelevski found Scott Reedy down low near the crease and Reedy one-timed the puck into the back of the net for his team leading 11th goal of the season at the 13:55 mark.

The Barracuda scored its third unanswered goal early in the third period. John Leonard scored his third goal of the season at the 1:39 mark.

Ontario regained its three-goal lead on the power play when Martin Frk scored his team leading 12th goal of the season at the 11:13 mark.

San Jose scored its third power play of the game on another five-on-three opportunity. Reedy scored his second goal of the game at the 13:51 mark. Ryan Merkley and Evander Kane set up Reedy’s 12th goal of the season.

Ontario iced the game late in the period seconds after their power play opportunity expired. Tkachev scored his third goal of the season at the 17:02 mark.

Villalta finished with 26 saves on 30 shots to earn the victory. Sawchenko made 12 saves on 16 shots in his two periods of action and suffered the loss.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 3-for-7 on the power play. Ontario was 2-for-4.

UP NEXT: San Jose continues their road trip in San Diego on Saturday 12/18 as they take on the Gulls at 7:00pm at Pechanga Arena.

Warriors Survive the Celtics 111-107

Warriors Survive the Celtics 111-107

By Barbara Mason

Now that Stephen Curry has surpassed the record set by Ray Allen a huge weight has been lifted off his shoulders. He is now able to play relaxed and free with no pressure other then trying to win games. The team is now relaxed as well and after a few days off the Golden State Warriors (24-5) should be poised and ready to take on the Boston Celtics (14-15) tonight at TD Garden.

The first quarter saw a Golden State that was light on their feet and starting fast. The Warriors led 34-26 at the end of the quarter. The Celtics had a very slow start in this game. Curry starting hitting three’s and along with Andrew Wiggins the Warriors were starting this game with a very fast pace.

At the half the Warriors had extended their lead 68-54. The first quarter was all Steph while the second quarter belonged to Andrew Wiggins. Wiggins was four of six from downtown with 24 points and Curry was three of six with 20 points. Wiggins was close to shooting 50% from downtown.

Both of these teams are known for being second half teams as they went into the third quarter. It was a horrible start in the first four plus minutes for Golden State. The Warriors were 0 for 6 with one turnover and needed to get going.

They had really cooled down letting the Celtics get within six points. The Warriors timing was way off and they were having trouble handling the Celtics intensity. Boston is especially hot at home so Golden State had to show up in the second half.

The Celtics were shooting 43% on three’s something that’s very tough to handle unless it is contained. The Warriors only had four turnovers in the entire first half but racked up five in the first six minutes of the third quarter.

Golden State barely held onto the lead as the quarter came to an end 82-81. What was most surprising is the Warriors had only 14 points in the third quarter, their lowest of the season.

The Warriors came alive in the final minutes of the fourth quarter leading 105-95. The Celtics had mounted a ferocious charge taking a brief lead in the final quarter with Jayson Tatum leading the way.

Golden State still had a lot of work left to close this game out. With 34.7 left on the clock Steph hit a floater and the Warriors were a stop away from their 24th win. A great defensive possession and Golden State won the game 109-104

It wasn’t pretty at times but great at other times and it was enough for the win. Andre Iguodala was a huge factor off the bench with 12 points, in fact the entire bench was very effective. Curry finished with thirty points and Wiggins turned in 27 points for the hard fought win 111-107. Head Coach Steve Kerr had his 400th win.

The Celtics got some great work from Jayson Tatum with 27 points from Jaylen Brown with 20.

Tomorrow the Warriors are back at it taking on the Toronto Raptors at Scotiabank Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 PM.

Canucks Sink Sharks 5-2, Meier Scores 100th

Timo Meier (28) is congratulated by San Jose Sharks teammate Erik Karlsson (65) after scoring his 100th career goal in the first period at SAP Center in San Jose on Thu Dec 16, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Mary Walsh

SAN JOSE– The San Jose Sharks fell 5-2 to the Vancouver Canucks Thursday. Bo Horvat, J.T. Miller, Jason Dickinson scored for Vancouver, and Brock Boeser scored twice. Thatcher Demko made 34 saves for the win. Timo Meier and Andrew Cogliano scored for San Jose and Adin Hill made 25 saves in the loss,

The win lifted the Canucks record to 6-0 since Bruce Boudreau took over as head coach. Meanwhile, the Sharks have just two wins in their last six outings. Tomas Hertl is on a 6 game point streak and Timo Meier’s goal was his 100th in the NHL.

Afte the game, Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner shared his impression of his team’s performance:

“I thought that, you know, the way we played tonight, I felt good about our team. I felt good about the way we played but we just didn’t execute, like I said, we didn’t capitalize. I thought that, you know, we probably needed a save earlier that we didn’t get. And sometimes that’s demoralizing too, when you’re sitting on the bench thinking you’re carrying the play and you’re chasing the game.”

Sharks forward Andrew Cogliano said: “It seems like, you know, opportunities that they get are going in and we’re not fighting hard enough to score our goals. We just have to be more desperate. I think we’re in a situation now where we’ve given some games back in a race that there’s a lot of teams in. And our will to win needs to increase.”

Brock Boeser scored the first goal of the game at 12:41 of the first period. Tanner Pearson made a pass across the ice to Boeser, who took the shot from just above the hask marks.

Bo Horvat made it 2-0 with a power play goal at 16:23. J.T. Miller made a cross-ice pass to Horvat, who was just below the hash marks that Boeser scored from. Assists went to J.T. Miller and Quinn Hughes.

Timo Meier cut the Canucks lead in half with a goal at 17:22. An Erik Karlsson shot was blocked and bounced out to Meier in the face-off circle. His shot went through traffic and in. Assists went to Erik Karlsson and Tomas Hertl.

Brock Boeser made it 3-1 with his second of the game at 17:17 of the second period. J.T. Miller passed the puck up from below the goal line and found Boeser in the face-off circle. Boeser took the shot and the puck went off of Hill’s glove and before going into the net just under the bar. Assists went to Miller and Tanner Pearson.

Andrew Cogliano made it 3-2 at 8:29 of the third period. Cogliano chased down his own dump-in and took a shot from a bad angle that may have suprised Demko. Assists went to Lane Pederson and Brent Burns.

J.T Miller scored into an empty net at 17:32. Jason Dickinson scored into an empty net at 18:57. Assists went to Elias Petterson and Kyle Burroughs.

The Sharks out-shot the Canucks 34-30 in the game. In the third period, however, while the Sharks trailed, the Canucks out-shot the Sharks 15-11. The Canucks won 57% of the face-offs. The Sharks had one power play and it had two shots on goal. The Sharks penalty kill allowed three shots and one goal in three penalties.

Jayden Halbgewachs made his NHL debut with the Sharks Thursday. He took one penalty and had three shots on goal in 16:44 of ice time with the second line.

The Sharks will host the Vancouver Canucks again on Tuesday, at 7:30 PM PT.
