Heat shut down Barracuda in 4-1 win

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE — The Stockton Heat enacted revenge on the San Jose Barracuda in a 4-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at SAP Center.

San Jose has two out of its past three games. Stockton have won five out of its last six. The Barracuda handed the Heat their first regulation on home ice back on New Year’s Eve.

Adin Hill made his first career start for the Barracuda. Hill just came off the Covid-19 protocol, and the San Jose Sharks sent him down for a conditioning assignment.

Stockton (19-3-2-1) drew first blood early in the first period. A turnover by Artemi Kniazev was picked up by former ‘Cuda forward Alex Gallant who snapped home a wrist shot top shelf past Hill for his first goal of the season at the 2:04 mark.

The Heat doubled its lead on the power play halfway through the opening frame. Martin Pospisil sent a shot from the point initially saved by Hill but Luke Philp cleaned up the rebound for his eighth goal of the season.

The aftermath set off ‘Cuda head coach Roy Sommer who frantically went over by the Stockton bench and started yelling at them. The referees ejected both head coaches after the hostile exchange of words.

Stockton scored their third unanswered goal in the second period. Matthew Phillips sent a home run pass up the ice that sprung Jacob Pelletier on a breakaway. Pelletier skated in a snapped home a wrist shot top shelf past Hill for his team leading 11th goal of the season at the 7:52 mark.

Pelletier has a team high 28 points on the season.

San Jose (11-14-1-0) scored its only goal of the game halfway through the third period. Adam Raska skated in on Heat goalie Dustin Wolf, who made the initial save. Scott Reedy cashed in the rebound for his team leading 14th goal of the season at the 10:10 mark.

Stockton iced the game with an empty net goal with 1:05 remaining. Justin Kirkland’s fourth goal of the season snapped a 19-game goal less draught for the Heat left winger.

Wolf finished the game stopping 33 out of the 34 shots to earn his league best 15th victory of the season and 10th in a row. Hill made 33 saves on 36 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 0-for-5 on the power play. Stockton was 1-for-6.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Wolf 2) Reedy 3) Pelletier

UP NEXT: San Jose continues its five-game homestand on Friday 1/7 as they host the Henderson Silver Knights at 7:00pm at SAP Center.

Kings deliver again edge Heat 115-113 at Golden One; Sac has won three of last four games

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Sunday afternoon for the first game of 2022. The Kings last played on Friday afternoon as they took on the Dallas Mavericks at home. On Friday, the Kings played a terrible game against the Mavericks that saw them lose 112-96.

It was summed up post-game by Kings head coach Alvin Gentry who said, “If anyone needs me, I’ll be at home drinking.” It was a rough game that the Kings showed no effort. On Sunday, the Kings would look to clean up the action on the court as they welcomed in the Miami heat at 3 PM PST. The Kings defeated the Heat at home 115-113 on Sunday afternoon.

It was a weird first quarter in Sacramento. Neither team seemed like they could find a rhythm on the offensive end of the ball. However, the Kings did outscore the Heat 26-18 in the first quarter.

The Kings defense was playing well from the outset, and the Heat also were not hitting their shots. The Kings could take advantage of this in the first quarter and hoped to keep up the defensive pressure as the game continued.

In the second quarter, the defense crumbled. The Kings allowed the Heat to go off for 39 points in the second quarter and put the Kings lead in jeopardy. The Kings countered with 35 points of their own which preserved the lead.

It was a defensive nightmare for the Kings, almost giving up 40 points in a quarter. The saving grace for the Kings was that Miami didn’t play much defense either. The Kings would go into halftime with a 61-57 lead. Damian Jones led the way for the Kings in the first half with 14 points. Kyle Lowry led the Heat with 14 first-half points.

It wasn’t a complete meltdown for the Kings in the third quarter. Nonetheless, the third quarter was not kind to the Kings. While avoiding the breakdown, the Kings were outscored in the third quarter, 33-29.

However, the Kings went on a run towards the end of the quarter to avoid going into the fourth down. The score would be tied 90-90 going into the final 12 minutes of action against the Heat in Sacramento.

In the fourth quarter, the game was up for grabs. Both teams traded baskets until the score was 113-113 with 26.6 seconds to go. De’Aaron Fox would be fouled on a drive and make both of his free throws to make it 115-113.

The Heat had one final play with 6.2 seconds left. Jimmy Butler drove to the rim and missed his floater, and the Kings would win the game as time expired 115-113. It was a gritty win for the Kings, who had ample opportunity to implode.

Instead, they held their own and ended the Heat’s five-game winning streak. De’Aaron Fox played a significant role for the Kings down the stretch and finished the game with 24 points. Buddy Hield added 26 points for the Kings during the win. Tyler Herro led the way for the Heat in defeat as he scored 22 points along with Omer Yurtseven.

Up Next: The Kings will travel to Los Angeles on Tuesday to take on the Lakers at 7:30 PM PST.

Lance shines in his start in 49ers 23-7 win

by Marko Ukalovic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. —With all eyes on him and his team’s playoff hopes hinging on his performance, Trey Lance did what he needed to do.

After a slow first half, the San Francisco 49er’s rookie quarterback threw for two touchdowns in the second half to help deliver a 23-7 victory over the Houston Texans in the final home game of the season for San Francisco on Sunday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium.

San Francisco (9-7) remained as the sixth seed in the NFC and control their own destiny with a win and they’re in scenario for the final week of the regular season.

Lance, who made his first home start of his career and second start of the season, didn’t get off to the hot start that most people were expecting. The Niners offense was able to generate only three first downs on their first four possessions.

Houston (4-12) intercepted Lance on the first play of San Francisco’s fourth possession as he was trying to find tight end George Kittle on the left side, but the pass was underthrown as Desmond King stepped underneath and returned it to their own 20-yard line.

The Texans responded with its best drive of the game. They went 80 yards on 14 plays that was capped off with an eight-yard touchdown reception by Brandin Cooks when rookie quarterback David Mills found him open down the middle in the back of the endzone.

Both offenses played so poorly in the first half that the Texans offense was the first to reach the red zone with four minutes remaining in the first half.

Lance settled down near the end of the first half when he drove the 49ers down to the Texans’ 19-yard line after two completions to Brandon Aiyuk and one to Deebo Samuel. Robbie Gould got San Francisco on the board with a 37-yard field goal with 38 second left in the second quarter.

In the second half San Francisco’s defense dominated the trenches and shutout Houston for the final 30 minutes.

Marcell Harris intercepted Mills on the Texans’ first possession of the second half and Houston’s offense would not be able to recover the rest of the game.

San Francisco only needed four plays to cash in Harris’ pick. Lance found Elijah Mitchell out in the flat for an eight-yard touchdown reception to give the 49ers their first lead of the game at 10-7 with 5:53 left in the third quarter. The drive was aided by a 37-yard passing interference penalty on Terrance Mitchell.

“He played well enough for them to win today,” said Houston Texans head coach David Culley when asked about Lance. “He gave us a chance by giving us that one pick. The thing about him is that he’s very mobile and keeps plays alive.”

The closest Houston came to scoring in the second half was when Ka’imi Fairbairn 45-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right with 12:08 left in the fourth quarter.

The Niners took advantage of the good field position off of Fairbairn’s miss. Once again, they only needed four plays to paydirt. On a play-action pass, Lance found Samuel deep down the field on a corner post route. Samuel shook off the attempted tackle and danced his way down the sideline for his sixth receiving touchdown of the season to give San Francisco a commanding 17-7 lead with 9:56 left to play.

“That big play at the end was huge,” said San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan regarding Lance’s performance. “For the most part, he made some pretty good decisions running the ball.”

San Francisco sent Houston packing when they received the ball with under seven minutes remaining in the game. Two big plays, the first a spectacular one-hand catch by Kittle for 28 yards and then a Mitchell 37-yard rush to the Texan’s six-yard line help set up Gould’s 27-yard field goal to seal the deal.

Mitchell became the all-time rookie rushing leader for the 49ers when he rushed for 119 yards on 21 carries. Mitchell’s 878 rushing yard broke the mark set by Vic Washington (811) in 1971 with 14 appearances, despite missing the past three games due to an injury in just 10 appearances.

Lance finished 16 of 23 for 249 yards and two touchdowns and one interception with a QB rating of 116.0. Aiyuk led the Niners in receiving with four catches for 94 yards.

“Yeah, I think I got into a better rhythm,” Lance said. “Probably settled in after that two-minute drive. I think that is when I started talking to (quarterbacks coach) Rich (Scangarello) and (head coach) Kyle (Shanahan) and kind of let them know that I felt settled.”

Mills, who had a rough game, finished 21 of 32 for 163 yards with one touchdown and one interception. His QB rating was just 75.4.

Cooks led the Texans in receiving with seven catches for 66 yards and one touchdown. Running back Rex Burkhead had a quiet game with 47 yards on 16 carries.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 5-for-13 on third down situations. Houston was 5-for-15.

The Niners outgained the Texans 416-222 in total yardage and had more first downs 19-15.

UP NEXT: San Francisco travel down to Los Angeles to take on the Rams in the regular season finale on Sunday 1/9 at 1:25pm.

Las Vegas Raiders post game report: Carlson boots winner gets Raiders closer to playoff spot; Vegas defeats Indianapolis 23-20

#2 Daniel Carlson of the Las Vegas Raiders is jubilant after booting a 33 yard field goal to get the Raiders a three point win over the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis Sun Jan 2, 2022 (AP News photo)

Las Vegas Raiders beat writer

In a game that went right down to the wire the Las Vegas Raiders (9-7) when Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson exhibited closing seconds heroics once again when he booted a 33 yard field goal with the score tied at 20-20 at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis to defeat the Colts (9-7) on Sunday afternoon.

The Raider had a touchdown that was called back on a TV replay reversal and lost a touchdown on an unfortunate play which were the only two turnovers of the game. For quarterback Derek Carr went 24-31 for 255 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The Raiders who won the game by three also took a three point half time lead at the half 13-10. It was Carr towards the end of the game that got Carlson good field position to boot the game winning field goal a win that takes the Raiders one step closer to getting into the post season.

With the win over the Colts on Sunday the Raiders picked up their third straight win, the Raiders have won games by three or less points during the three game streak with a win over the Cleveland Browns 16-14 on Mon Dec 20, a 17-13 win against the Denver Broncos on Sun Dec 26, and Sunday’s thriller in Indianapolis 23-20.

Carr was saying the Raiders are finding ways to rally and make late comebacks. Although the Raiders when facing the Browns, Broncos and Colts made those close comebacks it’s the coming back from behind the making of a good football team, “We’re finding a way to do it because we have the right kind of guys and there’s never been a doubt, there’s never a finger pointed, you know, at this or that, and this coach is not there, and all this kind nobody cares.” Carr told the AP.

The Raiders host the Los Angeles Chargers (9-7) next Sun Jan 9th a 1:25 pm PST kick off for the last regular season game. The Chargers who have won five of their last nine games blew out the Broncos Sunday 34-13 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

The San Jose Sharks started 2022 off on the road, losing 8-5 to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The victory marked the Penguins’ eighth win in a row. Evan Rodrigues and Bryan Rust each came away with hat tricks for the Penguins.

Kasper Bjorkqvist and Jake Guentzel scored the balance of the Pittsburgh goals, while Casey DeSmith made 22 saves for the win. Alexander Barabanov, Brent Burns, Matt Nieto, Jacob Middleton and Logan Couture scored for the Sharks. James Reimer made 11 saves on 17 shots in the first period before being replaced by Zach Sawchenko, who made 20 saves on 21 shots.

The Penguins scored four goals in the first 6:09 of the game, and went on to score two more before the end of the first period. “It snowballed on us. We couldn’t stop it. We tried to call time out, we tried to switch things out, but it was ugly,” said Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner after the game. He summarized the game as: “You score five goals on the road, you should at least come out with a point. So I think that speaks to a couple things on our side.”

Boughner praised his rookie goaltender, Zach Sawchenko:

“Young guy, never played a [NHL] game before, you know, going in to a 6-1 game in a building like this against a team like this. I thought he showed a lot of character, I thought he battled hard for us, and he gave us a chance to come back.”

Sawchenko allowed just one goal, and that one on the power play, in his two periods in net.

The first Pittsburgh goal, at 1:09, came from Evan Rodrigues. The Penguins had a two-on-one into the zone. Rodrigues got around Radim Simek and took a shot between the defenders that got by Reimer on the stick side. Assists went to Marcus Pettersson and Danton Heinen.

Rodrigues scored his second at 4:11. On another odd-man rush, Rodrigues carried the puck all the way to the net before lifting it in with a backhand shot. Assists went to Heinen and Dominic Simon.

Bryan Rust scored at 6:09. He took the shot from low in the slot. There was some traffic in front of the net, but no one between Reimer and Rust. Assists went to Kris Letang and Brian Dumoulin.

Barabanov scored one at 15:33. Timo Meier sent the puck to the net aloft. Barabanov knocked it out of the air and the slipped it around the goaltender. Assists went to Meier and Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

Kasper Bjorkqvist scored his first NHL goal at 16:29. Radim Zohorna sent the puck into a mass of bodies at the net. The puck went to Bjorkqvist who had dropped to a knee and was ready to nudge it back in. Assists went to Zohorna and Sam Lafferty.

Rust scored his second of the game at 19:32. He took the shot from the blue line into net traffic. It bounced over Reimer on the stick side. Assists went to John Marino and Marcus Pettersson.

The Sharks replaced Reimer to start the second period, putting rookie Zach Sawchenko into his first NHL game with the team down 6-1.

Brent Burns scored the only goal in the second period, with a blast from the blue line. The goal came on the power play at 14:27. Assists went to Nick Bonino and Noah Gregor.

Matt Nieto scored just 20 seconds into the third period with a carom off the end boards that went off of DeSmith and in. Assists went to Jacob Middleton and Andrew Cogliano.

Jacob Middleton scored at 3:01 with a redirection of an Erik Karlsson shot from the point. Assists went to Karlsson and Meier.

Logan Couture brought the Sharks within one goal at 4:09. Meier centered the puck out of traffic along the boards and Couture was ready to shoot it in.

Evan Rodrigues scored his third of the night at 17:59 on the power play. Rodrigues’ shot went past Erik Karlsson and between Jake Guentzel’s skates before getting to the net. Assists went to Kris Letang and Bryan Rust.

Bryan Rust scored into an empty net at 19:49. Assists went to Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel.

The Sharks were out-shot 39-27 in the game. They won 66% of the face-offs. The Sharks penalty kill allowed four shots and two goals. Their power play had one shot and one goal.

The Sharks next play on Tuesday in Detroit against the Red Wings at 4:30 PM PT.

Warriors Reverse Third Quarter Meltdown To Beat Jazz 123-116

Warriors Reverse Third Quarter Meltdown To Beat Jazz 123-116

By Barbara Mason

Saturday night the Golden State Warriors (28-7) took on the Utah Jazz (26-10) to start off the New Year. This was the second year in a row that Golden State has played on New Years Day. They came into Utah from Denver where they were unable to play the Nuggets due to the inability of Denver to fill out an eight man roster. Golden State won this game 123-116 in a wild fourth quarter in which both teams played at a high level.

The Nuggets had a multitude of injuries coupled with players on covid protocol. The decision to postpone this game came very late in the day, a real frustration for Golden State.

After all the confusion in Denver the Warriors headed to Utah to take on a very tough Jazz team. The team has faced adversity before this season and would have to dig deep to get past Utah who was slightly favored in this game.

After one quarter Golden State led by the score of 29-24. They had shot 46% and came into this game playing fast and strong. It was a nice start for the Warriors, a team that is a third and fourth quarter team. As we have seen time and time again, every attempt was being made to take Stephen Curry out of the game.

Taking Curry out of any game is easier said than done and the Jazz found this out as the second quarter wore on. He will shoot over you and he will find a way to defeat any attempt to slow him down. The Warriors had a 13 point lead mid-way through the second quarter.

Having Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins back gave Golden State the increased depth that we are used to seeing. The offensive effort that we saw from the Warriors in the first half was the difference in this game so far.

The Jazz cut the 13 point lead to five as the quarter began to wind downs but Andrew Wiggins put a stop to Utah’s bid. He finished the half with 17 points. Otto Porter had an amazing half with 16 points, and with two quarters in the books the Warriors led 64-50.

Whatever was said in the Jazz locker room at the half it resonated because they came out on fire. They outscored the Warriors 41-22 in the third quarter The Jazz are the number one team in the league in third and fourth quarter scoring so Golden State had their work cut out for them in the final quarter.

The Warriors sure rallied in the fourth quarter in a masterful offensive display. Golden State held their ground offensively and defensively in the absence of Draymond Green.

Curry finished the game with 28 points, six from downtown. Wiggins had a great game with 25 points. He had eight points in a row in the final four minutes which reversed the course of this game. Otto Porter had 20 points so a great showing from the Warriors this evening. Jordan Poole and Andre Iguodala both had double digits off the bench. This was as impressive a win as I have seen all season from this team.

The Warriors will now head home for a game against the Heat at Chase. The tipoff Monday night is scheduled for 7:00PM.
