With the home crowd on their side the San Jose Barracuda (1-1-0-0) were able to skate away with a victory against the Bakersfield Condors (1-0-1-0) 3-2 in overtime at Tech Cu arena.

The powerplay would start out clicking for the Barracuda as Luke Johnson would score on the powerplay assisted by Derrick Pouliot.

That would be all of the scoring in the first, though there would be a couple more powerplay opportunities that the Barracuda were not able to capitalize on.

In the second period we would see the Eetu Makiniemi show as he would stop all 14 shots he would face from the Condors. Astonishingly the Barracuda in the second period would only have one shot on goal in comparison.

To kick off the third period the Condors would find a way to respond off of a rebound from Makiniemi’s pads that would go right to Samuel Dove-McFalls who would tap it in. The assists would go to Tyler Tullio and Yanni Kaldis.

The Barracuda would find a way to respond again on the powerplay from a goal on two on one by Scott Reedy assisted by Andrew Agozzino and C.J. Suess.

Not to long after though the Condors would respond with a powerplay goal of their own off of another rebound this time tucked in by Matt Boudens. The assists would go to Samuel Dove-McFalls and Xavier Bourgault.

The goal would be enough to force the game to overtime as the shots at the end of regulation would be 30-20 in favor of the Condors.

In dramatic fashion on another two on one for the Barracuda Artemi Kniazev assisted by Luke Johnson would tuck it in blocker side past Olivier Rodrigue to win the game. The final score would end up being 3-2 with the Barracuda on top.

The Barracuda’s next game will be against the Iowa Wild in Iowa on Friday Oct. 14th at 5:00 p.m.

NHL podcast with Matt Harrington: Hertl pumped scoring in hometown Prague not enough Sharks lose twice to Predators; Flames Weegar signs 8 yr deal for $50 million; plus more

Calgary Flames MacKenzie Weegar signed a new contract with the Flames for eight years for $50 million (photo from nhl.com)

On the NHL podcast with Matt:

#1 Matt, we’ll lead off with the NHL Global Series where game one was concluded Friday in a 4-1 loss and then the Sharks took another tough loss in a squeaker 3-2 on Saturday. The biggest thrill was when the Sharks Tomas Hertl scored San Jose’s lone goal on Friday in front of Hertl’s hometown fans in Prague.

#2 28 year old defenseman MacKenzie Weegar to a big eight year handshake from the Calgary Flames signing on for $50 million. Weegar is in the final year of his three year deal with the Flames and the Flames wanted to go out and make sure they could secure his services.

#3 Elsipogtog First Nation celebrated the NHL pre season game between the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators which drops the puck this Saturday at J.K. Irving Centre in Bouctouche. Matt this will be probably the only time the Elsipogtog First Nation will be an opportunity to see the Stanley Cup up close and in person. The First Nation gets to enjoy Hockeyville and NHL hockey atmosphere.

#4 Matt, Jordan Staal is looking for contract with the Carolina Hurricanes. Canes general manager Don Waddell says he’s confident he can get a deal with Staal. Staal is in the final year of his ten year $60 million contract.

#5 The Dallas Stars Jason Robertson signed on for a four year $31 million contract. In 2021-22 Robertson had 41 goals, 38 assists, 79 points, and a plus 16 Rating. Looks like the Stars and Robertson got a good deal on both ends.

Sharks Drop 2nd From Prague to Preds 3-2

Luke Kunin second from right celebrates a goal scored in the second period it was Kunin’s first NHL goal this one coming against the Nashville Predators on Sat Oct 8, 2022 (AP News photo)

By Matthew Harrington

The San Jose Sharks will be making the transatlantic flight home with lifelong memories and the experiencing of playing hockey in two World capitals. They will not, however, be returning with any points in yow after falling to Nashville 3-2 in Prague Saturday night. The Sharks went winless in both contests of the Global Challenge Series against the Predators.

Luke Kunin converted on the power play for his first goal in teal and Logan Couture scored his first of the campaign, but Nino Niederreiter scored twice and Filip Forsberg potted a goal for the victory. Kevin Lankinen made 31 saves, holding off a late Sharks push for the two points.

The Sharks held a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes thanks to Kunin knocking in a loose puck at the net front with 5:36 left in the frame, but Nashville outscored San Jose 3-1 in the middle frame.

Niederreiter beat Kaapo Kähkönen 4:35 into the second on a snap shot for his second goal against thr Sharks this season. Logan Couture answered right back on the next faceoff, beating Lankinen of a feed from Steven Lorentz ten seconds later for a 2-1 lead. Mario Ferraro also assisted on the goal, his second apple after picking up the secondary assist on Kunin’s goal as well.

The lead was short lived with Forsberg scoring on a wrap around chance the hit off Kähkönen’s pad below the goal line and up and in the net at the 6:29 mark. Niederreiter added his second at the 12:13 mark of the frame for a 3-2 edge. Kähkönen made 15 saves on 18 shots.

The Sharks pushed late, putting 15 shots on goal in the third while allowing only three, but Lankinen turned aside all comers to seal the win for Nashville.

San Jose look to give their coach and general manager their first wins Friday night when they open the season at home. They’ll be facing Brent Burns and the Carolina Hurricanes after an offseason swap.

They’ll then play another rare Friday-Saturday back-to-back when the Chicago Blackhawks come to town Saturday night. The Sharks will be honoring former captain and general manager Doug Wilson that night.

Notes: Steven Lorentz and Oskar Lindblom picked up their first points as members of the Sharks, while Kunin scored his first goal after an offseason trade brought him over from Nashville…the Sharks won the faceoff battle a second night in a row, taking 50.7 percent of the draws…Evgeny Svechnikov and Jaycob Megna drew in for the Sharks, replacing Scott Harrington and Noah Gregor from the opening game lineup…San Jose wore their all teal uniform set as the designated home team, meaning fans have now seen both sets with the Sharks wearing their white sweaters Friday.

Preseason opens for Barracuda on sour note as they lose to Bakersfield 5-1

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

On a late night in Bakersfield the San Jose Barracuda took on the Bakersfield Condors and would end up losing 5-1.

The scoring would open early as Matt Bouldens for the Condors would open the scoring only 44 seconds into the game with an assist from Michael Kesselring.

However the Barracuda would find a way to respond in the first period with a goal from Brandon Coe assisted by Mitchell Russell and Danil Gushchin.

For the Barracuda that would be all of the offense they would be able to muster as heading into the second period the Condors took control. This would helped along by a goal from Filip Engaras on the Condors assisted by Alex Peters and Yanni Kaldis.

That would be the only goal of the second period though the shots would favor the Condors 12-9.

In the third period the Condors really hit their stride kicked off by a goal from Tye Felhaber and assisted by Greg Mckegg.

This would added on to on the powerplay by Dino Kambeitz assisted by McKegg and Seth Griffith.

Finally the Condors would put the cap on the night with and empty net short handed goal by Michael Kesserling.

The game would not end without a little extra fireworks though as multiple misconducts would be handed out to both teams in the third period.

The final shot count would end at 34-25 in favor of the Condors.

The Barracuda’s next game will be against the Condors on Oct. 8th at 4:00 p.m. on the Cuda’s home ice.

Sacramento Kings De’Aaron Fox (left) reaches out to head coach Mike Brown (right) during practice session. The Kings host the Portland Trailblazers at Golden One Center in Sacramento on Sun Oct 9, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the Kings podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 Jeremiah the Sacramento Kings (1-0) played against the Los Angeles Lakers to open the pre season at Crypto.com in the Southland and got off to a victory with a 105-75 win it just seemed like the Kings held the Lakers back on defense and were able to covert their shots on offense last Monday night?

#2 De’Aaron Fox is one of the Kings weapons on offense who can deliver night in and night out just like he did last season shooting for ten points tie for second in scoring pulling down four rebounds and getting an assist.

#3 The Kings might look forward to Keegan Murray with 16 points, six rebounds and one assist he played big last Monday for the Kings in the win. Great ball distribution taking his shots wisely and ended up leading the Kings in scoring.

#4 Richaun Holmes never one to shy off the shot he’s been key of the Kings even last season in some crucial moments when he was needed to hit some timely shots. Monday was no different has he hit ten points, five rebounds and an assist. Holmes can really fit into the scheme of things with this offense this year.

#5 The Kings match up for their next game against the Portland Trailblazers (0-2) I know you’ll be on hand mic side and for the written word for the final game recap for this thriller. The Blazers have dropped their first two pre season games to the Los Angeles Clippers and the Utah Jazz they play their first pre season road game with the Kings Jeremiah tell us how you see the Kings countering the Blazers this Sunday night at Golden One?

Oregon Ducks quarterback Bo Nix (10) was hard to catch for the Stanford Cardinal cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly (17) at Autzen Stadium in Eugene on Sat Oct 1, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the Stanford Cardinal football podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel, You knew the way the Stanford Cardinal (1-3) were playing it was going to be a rough go for Stanford when they went into the confines at Autzen Stadium in Eugene when the Cardinal got landslided 45-27 by the Oregon Ducks (4-1).

#2 For Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee it was not the afternoon that it was cracked up to be throwing 166 yards, 19-33, and two touchdowns it wasn’t enough to keep up with the Ducks.

#3 Daniel, rough first half for the Cardinal defense as the Ducks opened up the first quarter with ten points and closing out the half in the second quarter with 21 points.

#4 Ducks quarterback Bo Nix went 16-29 for 161 yards for two touchdowns. Nix was able to run the ball and that was one of the factors that kept the Cardinal defense off last Saturday.

#5 The Cardinal host the Oregon State Beavers (3-2) this Sat Oct 8th. The Beavers have lost two straight games after losing three in a row. The Beavers dropped their last game last Saturday getting trounced by the Utah Utes 42-16. How do you see the Beavers and Cardinal match up this Saturday at Stanford Stadium?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Las Vegas is not just for Gambling anymore

Las Vegas is not just for Gambling anymore

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

The moment you mention Las Vegas, gambling comes to mind, of course. But that is becoming less and less the case. Las Vegas Tourism reports that millions of people are coming to their city each year from all over the world for pure entertainment, and not just for the slot machines or the tables, poker, baccarat or sports betting.

It is a total family destination. The biggest entertainers in the world, perform at the Las Vegas strip. It is not only the Las Vegas (once Oakland) Raiders of the NFL or the NHL Golden Knights. The Las Vegas Grand Prix, Formula 1 is taking place November 2023, there is information and tickets are selling already over a year from the popular racing event. Basically, Las Vegas is the ultimate “event oriented” city.

This is far from the Las Vegas of the 1960’s at the Sands with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., and Shirley McLaine, yes, she was also part of the “Rat Pack”. The 1970’s when Elvis make his big comeback as “The King” and opened the International Hotel, which later became the Las Vegas Hilton and since then now it is the Westgate.

The names might have changed, but Sin City is growing in stature every year. If you visit Las Vegas you will see tour guides with groups of people from France to China, from Japan to Germany to Australia.

There was a time in the young history of the City of Las Vegas (Founded in 1905) when the biggest businesses were gambling and legal prostitution. But today a watering hole in the middle of the desert founded by mafia characters, very much depicted in Hollywood movies, like Casino, and Bugsy is growing in many ways. Construction is everywhere.

Las Vegas has the most hotel rooms of any city in the United States, as of January 2016, 167,730 rooms; today close to 200,000 rooms. Is Las Vegas a city without problems? No, not by any means. Water is a very important commodity and an obvious necessity, after all, it is a city in the middle of the desert.

The US government issued a water shortage declaration on Colorado’s river in January 2022 and Southern Nevada’s water allocation was reduced to 7 billion gallons.

How about the A’s? I have talked to a lot of regular fans, and a lot of bay area people. The majority believe the A’s are moving to Las Vegas, some say they will not, some tell me “move already!” others still have faith in Oakland, and the rest are Sharks and 49ers fans and some are Giants fans, but not that many this year.

LAS VEGAS INFORMATION: Around 1 million residents between Las Vegas 644,594 and Henderson 309,955. It is the 25th-most populous city in the United States, the most populous city in the state of Nevada, a State with approximately 3 million people. City of Las Vegas is the number 40 designated media market in the US. STATE OF NEVADA: Does not have an individual income tax. Does not have a corporate tax but a gross receipt tax.

IF YOU VISIT LAS VEGAS: Although is not recognized as a city of museums, I recommend you visit the Mob Museum and pick up the ultimate bobble-head. My favorite, the Al Capone Bobble-head, a must!

#2 Jerry Green is noted for getting angry at times after this recent incident some question maybe the Warriors have kept Green too long on the team because of his outbursts and at times having anger issues his most famous when he went after former Warrior Kevin Durant during a bench argument telling him to sign a contract and commit to the team on live television that he should have been let go by the team at that time?
