Sacramento Kings podcast Barbara Mason:

1.The Sacramento Kings have had a few wins this past week one of them breaking a historic losing streak but more importantly their younger players have really made strides that will benefit them down the road.

2.Sunday night the Kings took on a formidable opponent the Los Angeles Lakers with not only veteran LeBron James but also Luca Doncic who has been nothing short of amazing with Los Angeles.

3.While it was a most disappointing game for the Kings, there was some outstanding play from some of the newer and younger players.

4.Veteran Russell Westbrook got a technical very early in this game. What was going on what exactly went down to draw this foul.

5.Now the Kings head home to Golden 1 to take on another playoff contender a tough matchup with the Phoenix Suns.

Luca Doncic Dominates As Lakers Handle Kings 128-104

The Sacramento Kings (14-48) pulled to within ten points of the Los Angeles Lakers in the third quarter before the Los Angeles Lakers (36-25) waltzed away with this game with a 128-104 win Sunday night at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Luca Doncic finished with the game high of 28 points. The second half was no contest with the Lakers dominating. The Kings Nique Clifford had a terrific game with 26 points and seven rebounds and Maxime Raynaud had a double double, 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Game recap: The Lakers dominated the first quarter outscoring the Kings 36-18. Sacramento was struggling from the start but they did turn things around significantly in the second quarter outscoring the Lakers 31-28. Los Angeles at one time in the first half had a 22 point lead but the Kings cut that lead down to 15 64-49 at the half. The Kings got off to a slow start but had a solid second quarter of play.

At the half, Russell Westbrook had 12 points and Nique Clifford also had a good half of basketball with ten. They were the only two Kings in double digits. DeMar DeRozan had a sluggish first half scoring only four points as did Maxime Raynaud also with four points although he did have seven rebounds. They had made up some ground in the later minutes of the second quarter and were looking to continue to cut into the Laker lead in the third quarter.

Deandre Ayton, Austin Reeves and of course Doncic were all dominating in the first half and the Kings would have to continue to push in the second half.

The Kings took their hot finish in the first half into the third quarter. At 8:32 the Kings trailed by ten points 68-58 as they continued to try and climb back into this game. When it started to look promising the Lakers ran their lead back up to 19, 81-62 and took the third quarter away.

We got to see the magic touch of Doncic finishing off the third quarter scoring 28 points. He was ten of 16 from the floor and four of eight from downtown. Clifford was having a terrific game scoring 22 points with five rebounds. Los Angeles took a 20 point lead 96-76 into the fourth quarter.

LeBron James dazzled to start the fourth quarter as Los Angeles took a 105-81 lead their largest of the game. At 6:20 the Lakers were completely dominating on both ends of the court and Sacramento was getting clobbered 118-91. Los Angeles was all smiles in the second half of the quarter with the apparent win looming. In the final four minutes of the game, the Lakers had emptied their bench.

The high score for the Kings was Clifford who had a great game finishing with 26 points and seven rebounds. Raynaud had a double double, 16 points and 13 rebounds. DeRozan never really got going in this game finishing with nine points and four rebounds.

Four of the Laker starters finished in double figures with Doncic the high for the game with 28 points and five rebounds. Both Doncic and LeBron James left the game for much of the fourth quarter letting the bench finish the game.

Game notes: The Kings continued their road trip after beating the Dallas Mavericks last Thursday night 130-121. Sunday night the Kings lost to the sixth place Lakers. The Lakers welcomed back Russell Westbrook who formerly played with Los Angeles. Westbrook finished with 14 points and started along with DeRozan, Raynaud, Clifford and Precious Ashiuwa.

The Lakers with Sunday’s win take a 3-1 series lead . The Kings did beat them back on January 12, 124-113. Los Angeles have now won two games against the Kings. There were no injuries noted for the Lakers going into the game and they were at full strength. Sacramento faced another challenge with a lop-sided, short-handed roster going into Sunday’s game.

Tuesday night the Kings will face the seventh place team in the Western Conference. Sunday night’s game will end this current road trip and the Kings will be back at Golden 1 Arena as they face the Phoenix Suns. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 8:00 PM.

Utah Mammoth game wrap: Blackhawks Blank Fossilized Mammoth 4-0 at the Delta Center

SALT LAKE CITY–Utah was never really engaged in sluggish Sunday matinee performance to wrap up Olympics-interrupted homestand which began in January.

The Utah Mammoth (31-21-4) took to the ice early Sunday afternoon for the first of three games against the Blackhawks (22-28-9) in a 12 day span, the next one taking place in Chicago on March 9 following three days later when Utah returns to Delta Center on March 12 from a five-game road trip. The Blackhawks behind the goaltending of Arvid Soderblom shutout the Mammoth 4-0 on Sunday.

The first period seemed destined to end in a scoreless draw, until Utah defenseman Nate Schmidt was whistled for tripping against Frank Nazar to give Chicago their fourth power play opportunity of the opening frame. Teuvo Teravainen was able to convert the man advantage for the Blackhawks with his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Tyler Bertuzzi, to give Chicago a 1-0 lead heading into the locker room. Blackhawks Soderblom went 8-for-8 in turning away Mammoth shots on goal, while Karel Vejmelka stopped 11 of 12.

Utah has often struggled in second periods of play this season, but in this game the lack of potency was even more evident than usual. At 11:38, Mammoth defenseman Ian Cole attempted to clear the puck in a battle behind the net with Chicago forward Landon Slaggert, but sent it right up the middle and straight to the stick of Blackhawk forward Nick Foligno who easily beat Vejmelka for his third goal of the season, unassisted, to double the lead at 2-0.

89 seconds later, Slaggert would lob a shot at the net which bounced off of Vejmelka’s glove and over his shoulder into the back of the net for Slaggert’s third goal of the season, assisted by Oliver Moore and Artyom Levshunov, to make it 3-0 Chicago against the listless Utah defense. Soderblom finished the period a perfect 10-for-10 in saves, while Vejmelka stopped seven of nine.

A minute into the third period, the Blackhawks opened the door for the Mammoth when Louis Crevier went to the sin bin for tripping against Clayton Keller. But continuing the defensive meltdown of the second period, Utah promptly coughed up a shorthanded goal to Teravainen, his second goal of the game, to put Chicago up 4-0, which is where things ended up at the end of 60 minutes. Throughout the game, the Mammoth skated as if chained to anvils on both legs.

Possibly the most serious, competitive athlete in Utah’s lineup, defenseman Mikhail Sergachev, was dispatched to face the media in the locker room. “Obviously, it’s a tough, tough performance, and our fans deserve better, a lot better than that,” Sergachev began. “But, you know, it just happens to everyone. We’ve been playing really good hockey lately, and we just got to get back to that, and through hard work. And we’re gonna do it.” What was the difference between Sunday afternoon and Thursday night’s dominant victory over the Minnesota Wild? “We just felt connected against Minnesota, Sergachev said. “We were trying to get open for each other, we were working for each other in the D-zone, when our guy got beat, the second guy would always be there to help. Today just didn’t feel like that, and throughout the whole game.” Of course, it is difficult to get an offense going when taking so many penalties, albeit the only Utah penalty the remainder of the game was a 10-minute misconduct awarded to Sean Durzi with 58 seconds left in regulation, and did not result in a shorthanded situation. Sergachev addressed that, saying, “when you’re disconnected, you’re chasing the game, and when you’re chasing the game, you’re taking penalties. Then just one goes over the other, and you’re losing the game that way. And we’ll let it slip, obviously, and in the second period, we just can’t do that. Obviously, we didn’t play well throughout the whole game, but that moment in the second period, I think we could have helped a little better, maybe score a goal. But it doesn’t really matter. Give Chicago credit, they played a hell of a game. They’re a good, fast team.”

Head Coach André Tourigny stated to open his post-game remarks, “I am obviously extremely disappointed about all of us: coaches and players. I think we have to be much better. There is no reason that (game) should ever happen. That kind of effort in front of fans… I am really disappointed in us, and it is on all of us, starting with me. That cannot happen again.” Tourigny agreed with the sentiment that the team just didn’t have their head in the game. “I don’t know how you play like that. I do not have much explanation for why our head was in that space. I don’t know. … Other than JJ’s line, I don’t think we did one good thing tonight. … I don’t think anyone was good. JJ’s line was alright. I don’t think about the goaltender or power d, power forward, forecheck, our back check, our d-zone, our power play, our PK.. I cannot find you a bright spot.”

Utah (31-22-4) plays its first road game since January 29 on Tuesday against the Washington Capitals (31-24-7), followed by games in Philadelphia, Columbus, Chicago, and Minnesota before returning home on March 12 where they hope to give the fans a better performance against the Blackhawks than they experienced on Sunday.

Mediocerity is the word for the Warriors

The Warriors walked into March with a 31-29 record, occupying the eighth and final playoff spot in the West. Their next five games are against the Clippers, Rockets, Thunder, Jazz, and Bulls. How this team is going to finish is anybody’s guess.

They just lost a game at Chase Center against the 41-year-old LeBron James, Lakers 129-101. Jimmy Butler is out for the season with a torn ACL. It typically takes 6-12 months for a full return, with 9 to 12 months for professional athletes to regain their full strength.

Stephen Curry also injured is missing games of late. His Right knee has patellofemoral pain syndrome (Runner’s Knee). When asked about the injury, he said one word,” weird.” Other Warriors medical situation, Seth Curry (sciatica) and the Jonathan Porzings saga is a totally disaster.

With just 22 games left, it doesn’t look like the Warriors are going to improve all of a sudden, even the postseason is at best a 50-50 proposition. They are currently sitting in the Western Conference’s eighth spot, aiming to avoid the play-in tournament and secure a top-six seed.

Just like the Giants, who play a few blocks away from Chase Center, the Warriors had a great run of championships winning in in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022. Every team suffers injuries; the Warriors are not alone; however, this season has always looked, to use Steph Curry’s previous word, “weird”.

Stanford Cardinal podcast Michael Roberson:

#1 Michael, a great night for Stanford Cardinal Benny Gealer scoring and leading with 30 points to help beat the Pitt Panthers 75-67.

#2 Always dependable Ebuka Okorie also had plenty of opportunities to finish second in scoring with 22 points.

#3 Aidan Cammann finished third in scoring with 15 points. The Cardinal were able to hand SMU’s defense and get the kind of scoring they needed.

Sharks Back in the Win Column After Defeating Edmonton; SJ skid ends at 5 with win over Oilers 5-4

San Jose, Calif. — The San Jose Sharks defeated the Edmonton Oilers 5-4 on Sunday afternoon in a critical matchup at SAP Center.

Entering the day five points out of a Western Conference wild card spot and riding a five-game losing skid, San Jose delivered a needed response against an Edmonton team that came in 29-23-8 and third in the Pacific Division.

Shakir Mukhamadullin scored the go ahead goal in the third period, snapping a 4-4 tie and lifting the Sharks to their first win in six games.

San Jose opened the scoring in the first period after killing off an early penalty. Macklin Celebrini capitalized when Oilers goaltender Connor Ingram left the crease to retrieve his stick, shooting the puck into an open net for a 1-0 lead.

The Sharks extended the advantage on the power play midway through the period. Michael Misa scored from in front off a pass from Tyler Toffoli to make it 2-0.

Edmonton answered with a power-play goal of its own. Leon Draisaitl finished a feed from Connor McDavid to cut the deficit to 2-1. Barclay Goodrow restored San Jose’s two goal cushion later in the period, scoring on a rebound to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead after one.

Evan Bouchard brought the Oilers within one in the second period, finishing a setup from McDavid during sustained offensive pressure. Edmonton controlled much of the middle frame, but San Jose carried a 3-2 lead into the third behind steady play from goaltender Yaroslav Askarov.

The Oilers tied it early in the third when Trent Frederick converted a one timer from the slot 2:54 into the period.

San Jose responded less than three minutes later. Alexander Wennberg deked to his backhand and beat Ingram after taking a pass from Philipp Kurashev, putting the Sharks ahead 4-3.

Edmonton answered again when former Shark Jake Walman blasted a slap shot past Askarov to even the score at 4-4.

Mukhamadullin provided the decisive goal midway through the period, firing a shot from the point past Ingram off assists from William Eklund and Misa. This goal by Mukhamadullin comes following his goal saving block, the cherry on top to his effort this afternoon.

The Sharks held on over the final minutes, with Askarov preserving the one goal lead to secure the victory.

The win avenged an earlier overtime loss in Edmonton in which San Jose squandered a 3-0 lead and kept the Sharks within striking distance in the playoff race heading into another key matchup against Winnipeg.

Pittsburg Stuns California on their Senior Day and Home finale, 72-56!!

BERKELEY – California played its last home game of the season on Saturday afternoon, hosting the Pittsburg Panthers on the Golden Bears’ Senior Day. A goodbye to their seniors, the fans who always came to the games, and to the “Haas of Pain.” This game is potentially a big one for Cal, as a win could solidify their chances of making it to the NCAA March Madness tournament. This game also meant a lot to Pittsburg as their fighting for the last seed in their conference tournament. So with that, both teams came out fighting, but the Panthers would be able to endure the “Haas of Pain” and win the game by 16 points, 72-56.

The last time the Panthers and the Golden Bears ran into each other was on January 1st, 2025, in Pittsburg. The game would go to the Panthers, 86-74. The all-time series between these two schools is 2-2, so a win today will give the lead to either of them. California entered this game riding a three-game winning streak; their most recent win was three days ago against SMU, 73-69. However, the Golden Bears aren’t too golden as they lost the last two recent matchups to Pittsburg in a row. After todays game, California would now have dropped the last 3 games in a row to Pittsburgh.

California started with a familiar lineup we’ve all seen. The Golden Bears went with guards Justin Pippen, Dai Dai Ames, and forwards John Camden, Chris Bell, and Lee Dort. Lee Dort was out on injury for seven games, but made his return in the Bears’ last game against the SMU Mustangs. California honored seven graduating Bears before the game in a Senior Day ceremony. The graduating Bears were DeJuan Campbell, John Camden, Milos Ilic, Nolan Dorsey, Chris Bell, Rytis Petraitis, and Lee Dort.

The Panthers came into the Pavilion with forwards Roman Siulepa, Cameron Corhen, and guards Omari Witherspoon, Damarco Minor, and Barry Dunning Jr. Pittsburg senior Cameron Corhen has been on a run lately, averaging 19.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 4 assists in their last three games. They also sit on a three-way tie with Notre Dame and Boston College for the last spot in the upcoming ACC Tournament.

With the crowd on their feet and ready to cheer on the Bears. Pittsburgh Panthers guard Damarco Minor would hit a three-pointer, followed right up by a fastbreak dunk. This quick 5-0 scoring run would quite the fans for now. Eventually, Lee Dort would get the Bears on the board with a quick layup inside the paint.

In the first 10 minutes of play, Cal was having a rough start in the afternoon with already having 6 turnovers. While Pittsburg just had 1 turnover, and was shooting well on the court to back up their lead. The Panthers were shooting 43% while the Bears were at a low 37%. The score was 7-14, but Bear Dejuan Campbell scored 5 points by himself in 5 minutes to bring the score to 12-14.

Guard Dejuan Campbell’s impact in the 1st half sparked the Golden Bears to lock in and focus on the team’s last home game. The Bears would finish the first half with 12 turnovers, and gave up 14 points in those turnovers. However, the Bears’ shooting brought them closer. As they never had the lead at all during the game, but that would change in the 2nd half.

At halftime, the Golden Bears were down to the Panthers 34-26. Dejuan would lead the Bears with 8 points in his 9 minutes of playing time. His impact and presence on the court was a big factor for the Bears to come back and win this game. His ability to be ready at all times and at anytime proves how valuable their bench is. The Bears’ bench would go and put up 12 points in the 1st half.

The Panthers again would get the half going off another three-pointer from Damarco Minor. Then Golden Bear forward Chris Bell would get a three-pointer to fall right after Minor’s shot. Cal is entering this half playing catch-up to Pittsburgh. With 10 minutes into play, nothing much has changed. The Bears would be able to hit some shots, then eventually go on multiple scoring droughts. Which was really slowing down their comeback. The score is now 52-44, Panthers hold a 8 point lead.

With 4 minutes left, the Bears are starting to run out, and safe to say Dai Dai Ames is on it. Ames drives to the paint for a layup, getting fouled, and knocking down his free throw for a three-point play. His efforts, trying to somehow get the Bears going and the crowd back in the game wasn’t enough. Especially the Panthers going on a 7-0 scoring run right after that. Pushing Pittsburgh’s lead to 14 points in this timeframe.

Although the results weren’t what the Bears and their fans were expecting. The graduating bears and players put on one last show in their home. They were lead by Dai Dai Ames with 11 points and 2 rebounds. On the other side of the bench, Pittsburgh Panthers forward Barry Dunning Jr would put up a double-double in Berkeley’s home finale.

The California Golden Bears have two more games left in the season, but will be on the road. Their first stop will be against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on March 4th, then they will end their season against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on March 7th. These last few games will project the Golden Bears’ chances for the NCAA March Madness tournament and their seeding placement in the ACC Tournament.
