Sacramento Kings report: Kings drop third straight pre season game; Coach Brown wants to take a look at his bench and free agents

Sacramento Kings center Domantas Sabonis (10) is non too thrilled about another pre season loss this time to the Golden State Warriors at Golden One Arena in Sacramento on Sun Oct 15, 2023 (@SacramentoKings photo)

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action for one of the last preseason tune-ups of the year. Golden State traveled to Sacramento Sunday evening to take on the Kings at Golden One Center. The two teams squared off for the first time since game 7 of the 2023 playoffs.

That series was the first round of the playoffs, where the Kings and Warriors went head-to-head. Only to lose on Sunday, the Warriors and Kings game started at 6:30 PM PST. The Kings lost in overtime 121-115.

In the first quarter, the Kings came out looking strong. The Kings offense scored an impressive 38 points in the first quarter as the offense was producing right where they left off last season. On the defensive end, the Kings held the Warriors to 25 points in the quarter. The Warriors were struggling to gain a rhythm on offense. Granted, they played this game without Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Chris Paul.

In the second quarter, the Kings offense slowed as the shots were not falling. The Kings lacked rhythm on the offensive end, scoring 21 points in the quarter. The Warriors offense scored 31 points in the second quarter. The Kings offense looked solid most of the first half, even if some shots weren’t falling. De’Aaron Fox and Domas Sabonis were firing in the offense Kings fans have come to love. The Kings and Warriors went into halftime, with the Kings leading 59-56.

The Kings and Warriors played a pretty even quarter in the third quarter. The Kings managed to score 24 points as the Warriors put up 27. The Kings and Warriors would be tied at 83 going into the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter, the Kings almost exclusively played second and third-string players. It showed in the box score. However, it was good to see some of the talent the Kings have that won’t get much playing time in essential minutes this season. Keon Ellis and Colby Jones both played well in the minutes they got. The end of the fourth quarter would not be the end of the game on Sunday night as the game was tied at 111.

However, in overtime the Warriors would seal the deal. The Kings only scored four points in the overtime period as the Warriors put up ten points.

The best performance from the Kings came from Sabonis who had 19 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists to lead the Kings. The Warriors best performance came from Kuminga who had 28 points to go along with six rebounds.

One matchup to watch as the preseason continues is between Chris Duarte and Kevin Huerter. Kevin has been inconsistent going back to the end of last season and will be fighting for the starting role with the addition of Duarte.

Up Next: The Kings will travel to San Francisco on Wednesday to take on the Warriors at 7 PM PST at the Chase Center.

Golden State Warriors report: Warriors Go 3-0 Beating Kings In Overtime 121-115

Sunday evening the Golden State Warriors (3-0) traveled up to our state capital to take on the Sacramento Kings (0-3) at Golden 1 Center in the third pre-season game of 2023-24. Stephen Curry and Chris Paul sat this one out as Klay Thompson, Kevon Looney, Andrew Wiggins, Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski started. The Kings also have a solid starting roster with De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, Harrison Barnes, Keegan Murray and Chris Duarte.

Warriors game wrap: The Kings had a quick start in the first quarter of the game leading after the first 12 minutes 38-25. Both team’s benches got to see some action in the first half as well. The Kings led by as much as 15 points in the opening quarter.

It was a much closer second quarter with the Kings just edging the Warriors at the half 59-56. The Warriors did win the second quarter 31-21. Both teams’ starting rosters played a little over two quarters and their benches got some extended time on the court in the second quarter.

The third quarter was a close one with the Warriors taking the quarter 27-24 and the score all knotted up at 83 with 36 minutes in the books. The two teams traded the lead throughout the fourth quarter and the game was tied numerous times.

There had been 19 lead changes in this game and most of those lead changes happened in the second half. With 1.7 seconds left in the game it was all tied up at 111. This game would go into overtime and there would be five more minutes of basketball.

The high score for the Kings in regulation was Sabonis with 19 points in 25 minutes of play. Fox had 17 points in 26 minutes. The Warriors had a slew of players in double digits with Kuminga scoring 26 points. Wiggins had 20 points and Thompson finished with 12. Raiders Defense Finishes Off Patriots With a Late Game Safety 21-17

Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs (8) tries to gain some ground on New England cornerback CJ Jackson (29) first half action at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sun Oct 15, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Las Vegas Raiders defense stepped up, and stepped up big in the final 1:47 of the fourth quarter. The Raiders were clinging onto a 19-17 lead. The Patriots had the ball but the Raiders defense forced them deep into their own territory. The Raiders defense closed out this game in the end zone with a safety courtesy of Maxx Crosby and Bilal Nichols in a 21-17 win. The Raiders have now won back to back games.

The Las Vegas Raiders (3-3) took on a struggling New England Patriot team (1-5) Sunday afternoon at Allegiant Stadium. Neither team is having a stellar season this year and the Raiders reached .500 are in third place behind second place Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC West with the Chargers still to play on Monday Night Football. The Raiders have lost some close games this season and Sunday’s game against the Patriots was no exception.

Patriots-Raiders post game recap: It was a defensive first quarter with a single score, a Raider field goal at 6:54, for a 3-0 lead going into the second quarter.

The Raiders extended their lead in the second quarter. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo found Jakobi Meyers for 12 yards and the touchdown. The extra point was good and Las Vegas had a 10-0 lead to start the second quarter. The Patriots got on the scoreboard at 8:38 via a 43 yard field goal and they had cut into the Raiders lead 10-3.

As the game went into the half, the Raiders had tacked on a second field goal now leading 13-3. Garoppolo was hurt in the closing minutes of the second quarter after having a very efficient first half of football. He was 14 of 22 for 162 yards and one interception. He was transported to a local hospital with a possible back injury. Back-up quarterback Brian Hoyer replaced Garoppolo under center to start the third quarter. He had not thrown a single pass this season.

New England had won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. The Patriots had a successful opening drive in the third quarter. They had not scored a touchdown in 12 quarters but that all changed when Ezekiel Elliott rushed up the middle for two yards and the Patriots finally had scored a touchdown after quite a drought.

New England now trailed the Raiders by a field goal 13-10. The Raiders Daniel Carlson kicked his third field goal of the day, a 30 yard kick giving Las Vegas a 16-10 lead.

Back-up quarterback Hoyer delivered the Raiders longest pass of the season in the third quarter, a 48-yard strike to Tre Tucker which set up the field goal attempt. The Raiders had been in the red zone twice in the second half; once in the third quarter and as it turned out once in the fourth.

Carlson was having a banner day kicking his fourth field goal, this one a 24 yarder, and the Raiders had a 19-10 lead. Las Vegas needed their defense to protect their lead and hand the Patriots their fifth loss of the season.

The Patriots had a great deal of success in the air in the fourth quarter putting together a great drive that would take, unfortunately for them, 9:30 off the game clock. A quarterback hit by the Raiders’ Maxx Crosby put this game in real jeopardy giving the Patriots a first and goal.

New England scored the touchdown and the Raiders would have to fight for this win leading by the slimmest of margins 19-17 with 3:36 left in the game. Las Vegas could not keep their final drive going and the Patriots had one final chance with 2:23 left on the clock and no timeouts.

A Raider win would be in the hands of their defense as this game went down to the wire. Las Vegas closed out this game in Crosby style stuffing Patriot quarterback Mac Jones in the end zone for the safety and a 21-17 lead and that was the ball game.

So much went down in this game from start to finish. The Raiders had a nice first half unfortunately culminating in the injury of Garoppolo right before half time. The fact that he went to a local hospital right after the injury does not bode well for Las Vegas.

Yes the Raiders won this game but they settled for four field goals while inside the red zone. This does not often win a lot of games. Hoyer had some really nice passes although failed to find the end zone. He did drive the team downfield a couple of times which culminated in two field goals. The Raiders’ defense came up huge in that final Patriots drive with the safety and the 21-17 win.

Next week the Raiders will travel to Chicago to take on another struggling team, the Bears. The Raiders will possibly be playing without Garoppolo and in that event Hoyer will take his place after looking pretty good in the Patriot game. Kick off at Soldier Field is at 10:00AM PT on Sun Oct 22.

Hoyer did not score any touchdowns in today’s game but he also had not thrown a single pass this season. It was a decent game for him and now he has some invaluable time with the team in game day situation. This is yet another game that Las Vegas has the ability to win and they should come into the game with a lot of confidence after today’s win.

Aces Drop Game Three As Liberty Force a Game Four 87-73

The Las Vegas Aces A’Ja Wilson (22) tries to drive on the New York Liberty’s Breanna Stewart (30) in first half action in game 3 of the WNBA Finals at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Liberty had a beautiful game plan and executed it to perfection winning game three 87-73. Kelsey Plum had the high in this game with 29 points but it was just not enough to get past New York. Chelsea Gray left the court with an apparent right left injury in the fourth quarter. Losing Gray would be a devastating blow to Las Vegas.

Sunday afternoon the Las Vegas Aces (34-6) came into Barclays Center looking to finish off the New York Liberty (32-9) and take a back-to-back championship. The Liberty put the brakes on that sentiment. They were playing at home in this game and this team is nothing to mess with especially after the embarrassment they suffered last Wednesday night at the hands of Las Vegas 104-76.

The Liberty are a desperate team coming into this game and a desperate team is a dangerous team. While they had some great success during the season against the Aces, this is the finals and all bets are off. Having a 2-0 series lead is huge for Las Vegas and the odds are clearly on their side.

The opening quarter was a puzzling one. Both teams looked stale and it took a few minutes to get this game going. Las Vegas had some ugly turnovers in the first quarter. Both the Aces and the Liberty had trouble making shots but they got it going as the quarter wore on. The Liberty took a nine point lead with under two minutes left in the opening quarter but the Aces continued to push back trailing by three points at the quarters end 21-18.

New York continued to press the Aces in the second quarter. The most the Liberty led by in the second quarter was eight points and at the half it continued to be a three point game 43-40. The two teams had shot for 22 points apiece in the second quarter. New York who is the best three point scoring team in the league was giving the Aces a run for their money. Every time the Aces threatened, the Liberty poured it on but they were unable to take a sizable lead.

The Liberty got a nice lead going in the third quarter 51-40 at 6:47. The Aces had some disturbing turnovers in the quarter and the Liberty’s Jonquel Jones was having an amazing and dominating game from the start, and there was no shutting her down.

Mid-way through the quarter the Aces already had ten turnovers, some of them very careless. Kelsey Plum was the only Las Vegas player with double digits. The Liberty had shut down the rest of the starters including A’Ja Wilson who had only 11 points by the quarters end.

As the quarter began to wear down the Liberty had taken a 14-point lead, the largest lead in the game so far. The Aces would have to pull out all the stops in the fourth quarter to get past a determined Liberty squad trailing after three quarters 61-50.

The fourth quarter would decide if the Liberty could push this series into a game four. The Aces while known for being a second half team did not live up to their reputation in the third quarter and would have one more quarter to make a move.

It was slow going for Las Vegas but after trailing by 11 points had cut it to six points as they continued to chip away at the Liberty’s lead. It got even tougher in the final minutes of the quarter for the Aces when Chelsea Gray limped off to the locker room with an apparent right leg injury seemingly in terrible pain.

When the Aces were looking to make their move, they lost Gray and at that point the Liberty just took over the game. New York had their largest lead of the game with under two minutes left 84-67. There was no stopping the Liberty as they kept this series alive.

The Las Vegas Aces remain one game away from the promised land but should the team lose Chelsea Gray it would be a horrible blow. She is a vital part of this team and playing without her would be a tough call .

Kelsey Plum finished with the team high of 29 points. A’Ja Wilson had a double double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Aces will no doubt take what happened on the floor today personally and will come out with a new resolve as they try to finish off this series in game four. They do not want to have to go back to Las Vegas tied in the series 2-2. Tipoff for game four is scheduled for Wednesday night October 18 at 5:00 PM.

Blackwood shines for Sharks in debut but falls to the Avalance in the shootout 2-1

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

SAN JOSE- Despite a stellar debut for Mackenzie Blackwood making 51 saves the Sharks still lost to the Avalanche 2-1 in the shootout.

Making his debut for Team Teal was Blackwood as he was acquired in the offseason. For the Avalanche Alexander Georgiev got the start.

This one would be a tight one all the way down to the wire all thanks to the heroics of Blackwood.

Thomas Bordeleau got the scoring going in the first on a tip-in as Matt Benning thew one to the front of the net.

After that things went quite offensively for both teams though the Avalanche would dominate in the shot totals period after period.

Colorado eventually broke through late in the third as Cale Makar scored his second goal of the season on a nice wrister from past the blue line.

That goal forced overtime though neither team was able to break through meaning the shootout was next.

In the shootout, no Sharks found the net but Mikko Rantanen would score, helping get the Avalanche the victory 2-1.

Overall Blackwood made 51 saves the most for a goalie in his debut since 1955. Both teams also could not score on the power play as the Avalanche went 0/5 while the Sharks went 0/4.

The three stars of the game were: 1st: Mackenzie Blackwood 2nd: Cale Makar 3rd: Thomas Bordeleau

The Sharks will look to get their first win of the season on Tuesday against the Hurricanes at home at 7:30 p.m.

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

SAN JOSE- The Barracuda bounced back against the IceHogs coming out on top with a convincing victory 7-2.

Making his professional debut for the Barracuda was goaltender Georgi Romanov while the IceHogs had Jaxson Stauber in between the pipes.

Scoring in this one took a little bit to get going but it would come from a newcomer as Ethan Cardwell scored his first career AHL goal. The goal came 17:42 in as Cole Cassels got the lone assist.

That was all the scoring in the first as the shots finished 11-9 in favor of Rockford.

Th second ended up being the opposite as just 1:48 in Joey Anderson scored unassisted tying the game up.

Less than three minutes later on the power play Brett Seney suddenly shot the IceHogs ahead with assists going to Anderson and Ethan Del Mastro.

San Jose would get a quick response from Justin Bailey who scored his first goal in a Barracuda uniform. Cassels once again got the lone assist.

The Barracuda continued to fight back as Tanner Kaspick gave them the lead with Anthony Vincent and Adam Raska getting the assists.

Ryan Carpenter would extend the lead to 4-2 with a goal just two second before the period was to come to an end. Valtteri Pulli and Bailey got the assists.

At the end of the second the shots favored San Jose 33-16.

This time in the third the Barracuda got on the board first as Cassels continued his solid night scoring shorthanded just 2:33 in.

Later in the period both Oskar Lindblom and Ryan Carpenter tacked on the lead making it 7-2.

That’s where the score stayed at as the Barracuda won outshooting the IceHogs 49-28.

The three stars of the game were: 1st: Ryan Carpenter 2nd: Justin Bailey 3rd: Georgi Romanov

The Barracuda won’t play again until Friday when they take on the Silver Knights on the road at 7p.m.
