The New Orleans Pelicans guard CJ McCollum takes a shot against the Sacramento Kings forward Keegan Murray in the first quarter at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento on Mon Dec 4, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the Sacramento Kings podcast with Jeremiah:

The Sacramento Kings (11-8) were back in action on Monday night. The Kings were set to host the first game of the in-season tournament as they welcomed in the New Orleans Pelicans (12-10). The Kings last played Saturday night as they defeated the Denver Nuggets 123-117.

The Pelicans got lots of help from top scorers Brandon Ingram with 30 points and the Kings defense had double coverage on Zion Williamson which relegated the ball to Ingram.

The Pelicans runner up scorer guard Herb Jones contributed with 23. The Kings would have been pretty much in lock step with the Pelicans if it were for that nine point deficit they had in the second quarter where New Orleans were ahead 34-25.

The Kings play tonight in Footprint Center Arena with a 6:00pm PT tip off. The Suns have won seven of their last ten games.

On Golden State Warriors podcast with Jerry Feitelberg:

#1 Jerry, if it wasn’t for the Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry who led with 31 points. The Warriors (10-6) would have had a struggle against the Portland Trail Blazers (6-14) to try and get that win if it wasn’t for Curry’s offensive prowess last night.

#2 Jerry also how crucial Jonathan Kuminga and Dario Saric both scoring 13 points in a game where every basket counted in the Warriors just getting by the Trial Blazers 110-106.

#3 The Portland Trail Blazers Anfernee Simons was the top scorer with 28 points and was followed up with Shaedon Sharpe with 26 points.

#4 Jerry did the 10-34 long range shots help Golden State in this one. In Warrior wins this season the long shots have helped clinch some of those games.

Warriors outlast Trail Blazers 110-106; Golden State’s Curry does the heavy lifting with 31 points

Portland Trail Blazers guard Anfernee Simons (1) drives on the Golden State Warriors forward Kevon Looney (left) in the first half at the Chase Center in San Francisco on Wed Dec 6, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Warriors, having lost two games by one point in the last three played, wanted to get back on the winning track against the rebuilding Portland Trail Blazers. The Blazers traded away their star point guard, Damion Lillard, to the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Blazers traded Josef Nurkic to the Phoenix Suns for DeAndre Ayton. The Blazers got Malcolm Brogdon from the Boston Celtics in the trade for Jrue Holiday. The Blazers came to town with a record of 6-13. Portland had won three in a row, and most games played were very close.

The Warriors could not take this team lightly. The Blazers led the league, causing their opponents to commit turnovers. One of the problems the Warriors have this season is committing too many turnovers. The Warriors defeated the Blazers by four points 110-106 on Wednesday night at the Chase Center.

The Blazers’ head coach, Chauncy Billips, had his team playing an aggressive defense. The young Blazers were all over the Warriors’ top three shooters for most of the game. The Blazers led for the entire first half. The Blazers held Klay Thompson to two points in the first half. Andrew Wiggins tallied five.

The Warriors did not have a single player in double figures in the first half. Warriors guard Stephen Curry and Moses Moody paced the Warriors with nine apiece. The Warriors made just two threes in 16 tries. The Blazers knocked down nine.

The Blazers won the first quarter, 26-22, and the second quarter, 29-26, to finish the first half with a seven-point advantage, 55-48. Shaedon Sharpe led the Blazers with 14. Anfernee Simons had 11, and Duop Reath added 10. The Blazers caused the Warriors to turnover the ball ten times in the first half.

Things did not go well for the Warriors to start the third period. The Blazers had the Warriors totally out of rhythm. Whenever the Warriors tried to close the gap, Portland answered the challenge. The Blazers increased the lead to 11, 77-66.

At this point in the game, Warriors head coach, Steve Kerr, decided to insert Jonathan Kuminga. Kuminga was the spark the Warriors needed. The Warriors went on a 10-0 run to make it a one-point game, 77-76. Curry scored eight of the ten points.

Kunimga made a steal and a dunk for the other two. Portland regained their composure and finished the third quarter with a four-point lead, 86-82.

Kuminga made the first basket of the fourth quarter. The Warriors scored the next basket to tie the game at 86. Portland knocked down a three, but Saric connected on a three to tie the game at 89. Portland regrouped and went ahead 98-92.

Thompson made his only three of the night to bring the Warriors within three, 98-95. The Warriors went ahead 103-100 on a basket by Thompson. Kuminga scored on a lob from Draymond Green to give the Warriors a four-point lead 105-101.

The Blazers made a three to make it 105-104. Curry knocked down a three with nine seconds left. The Blazers made it 108-106. With 2.2 seconds left, the Blazer had a foul to give.

The Warriors then had to inbound the ball from the far end of the court. They then fouled Thompson. Thompson made both free throws to seal the win for the Warriors.

Game Notes: With the win, the Warriors are now 10-11 for the year. The Blazers drop to 6-14.

The Warriors defense was much better in the second half. They won the third quarter 34-31 and the fourth quarter 28-20.

Curry paced the Warriors attack with 31 points, 22 coming in the second half. Curry made five threes in 13 tries. Green almost had a triple-double. Green had ten points, ten rebounds, and nine rebounds. Thompson has 11 and made one three. Wiggins finished with nine. The Warrior bench outscored the Blazer bench 43-36.

Kuminga and Saric each had 13, and Moody had 12.

The Warrior’s next opponent will be the Oklahoma City Thunder in Oklahoma City. It will be the fourth meeting of the season for the teams. The Thunder are 2-1 against the Warriors. The game will start at 5 p.m.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Gondola for the Dodgers

A rendering of a proposed Dodger Stadium gondola project that would aim to ferry up to 5,000 passengers an hour from Union Station in downtown L.A. to the stadium. (LA Aerial Rapid Transit)

Gondola for the Dodgers

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Remember when the A’s talked about building a Gondola to transport people to their future new home at Howard Terminal? It was in January 2019, and it was met with many bad jokes, primarily by cynical A’s fans. Something similar is in the works for the LA Dodgers to alleviate traffic to the games at Dodger Stadium. The Los Angeles Aerial Rapid Transit gondola was proposed by Aerial Rapid Transit Technologies LLC, an entity created by McCourt Global.

The company’s CEO is Frank H. McCourt, who owned the Los Angeles Dodgers and the stadium from 2004 to 2012. Originally, the LA gondola was said it would cost $125 million. Still, after all the environmental studies (as usually happens in costly California constructions), the cost now looks like a half-billion dollars for the project.

The aerial system would get fans from downtown to Dodger Stadium in about seven minutes, from Union Station to Dodger Stadium. Up to 5,500 people per hour in each direction, which means that 10,000 fans could be transported to Dodger Stadium two hours before the start of a game.

Anybody that has attended games at Dodger Stadium has experienced the incredible amount of traffic, going to a baseball park that averages about 47,000 fans per game. Dodgers have led MLB in attendance for a few years now.

No city in North America has more automobiles than Los Angeles, so a Gondola to Dodger Stadium is a practical and it is not a joke, it makes sense. Coincidentally, as projects go, if approved, the gondola would take thousands of fans from Union Station downtown to Dodger Stadium in seven minutes, just in time for the 2028 Summer Olympics.

The gondola is planned to be inaugurated in 2028, the same year the Oakland Athletics plan to inaugurate their new ballpark in the Las Vegas Strip, but…without a gondola. Finally, and ‘for the record’, The City of LA to Dodger Stadium gondola was planned years before the Oakland A’s announced they wanted to have one for what was to be their new home at Howard Terminal.

Gondola Trivia: The original gondola has existed in Venice, Italy since the 11th century. It is estimated that there were eight to ten thousand gondolas during the 17th and 18th centuries, most over the canals of Venice. There are only 400 hundred in active service today. Most of them used by tourists.

Sharks bounce back from three goal deficit defeat Isles in OT 5-4; SJ’s Eklund delivers winning goal

San Jose Sharks center William Eklund (center) scores the winning goal in overtime against the New York Islanders goalie IIya Soronkin at the UBS Arena in Elmont NY on Tue Dec 5, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Jessica Kwong

ELMONT, N.Y. — The San Jose Sharks got their biggest victory of the season with a 5-4 win in overtime against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena on Tuesday night.

San Jose trailed 4-1 at 8:27 in the final period, but rallied and overcame a three-goal deficit for the third time in franchise history.

William Eklund, who won it for the Sharks in overtime, said it was probably the most fun win he’s had in his NHL career.

“So fun, so fun,” said Eklund. “Just winning this way is really fun.”

In the first period, Julien Gauthier made a wrist shot at 9:28 to put the Islanders up 1-0. Tomas Hertl answered back with a wrist shot at 12:19 to tie the game at 1-1. In the second period, Brock Nelson scored a wrist shot at 5:27 to boost the Islanders up 2-1.

Mike Reilly in the third period made a slap shot at 5:17 to put the Islanders up 3-1. Then Ryan Pulock made a slap shot of his own at 8:27 to expand the Islanders’ lead to 4-1.

But the Sharks refused to give up, and Kevin Labanc made an unassisted tip-in at 11:55 to cut the Islanders’ lead to 4-2. Then Hertl made an unassisted wrist shot at 16:49 and the Sharks trailed by only one. That was not all Hertl had up his sleeve – Hertl got a hat trick with a wrist shot at 18:30 and tied the game at 4-4.

“For sure, I feel like I would lie if I don’t like to score a hat trick, you know, everybody loves to score especially when you can help the team and I’m really happy I could finish it,” said Hertl. “Two big points for us and I think we worked really hard this whole trip and a big win for us but we still have two more games but it feels right now great in our group.”

In overtime, Mikael Granlund passed the puck to Eklund who made a wrist shot at 4:55 to win it for the Sharks 5-4.

Eklund said he was “trying to get some speed there and Granlud made an unbelievable play to me to rip it into the net and it went in.”

San Jose scored 16 goals in the last three road games, which included a 6-3 win over the New Jersey Devils on Friday and a 6-5 loss to the New York Rangers on Sunday.

Sharks head coach David Quinn said the recent winning “certainly brings us to another level” after a tough first 11 games in the season.

“Fun? I don’t know if I’d call that fun,” Quinn said of the game against the Islanders. “But for the last three-and- a-half minutes, certainly, make you feel really good. You know that second goal really gave us a ray of hope, really good job by the Sturm-Labanc-Bailey line… It was a hell of a play on that fourth goal to tie it.”

The Sharks (7-17-2) continue their road trip on Thursday against the Detroit Red Wings (13-7-3) at Little Caesars Arena. The puck drops at 4pm PST.
