On the Sharks podcast with Len:

#1 San Jose Sharks Erik Karlsson scored an overtime goal to help the Sharks defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 in overtime. Karlsson also picked up two assists in the Sharks first home victory of 2022-23.

#2 Karlsson was just hoping that Timo Meier delivered the puck in the right place which he did and Karlsson was able to score the game winner thanks to a great pass from Meier.

#3 The Shark Logan Couture scored his 300th career goal on Thursday night and Couture said that he plays the game to win but when those milestone do come he definitely appreciates it.

#4 After losing a tough game to the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night Sharks head coach David Quinn said the team came out Thursday against the Leafs intense from the start and that the club deserved the win and deserved the two points.

#5 The Sharks now face one of the toughest customers in the NHL the Tampa Bay Lightning (4-4-0) on Saturday at 1:30pm at SAP Center. The Lightning have won three of their last four and they won their last game on Wednesday in Anaheim against the Anaheim Ducks 4-3.

Logan Couture’s 300th goal of career helps propel Sharks over Maple Leafs by final of 4-3 in OT

SAN JOSE– The San Jose Sharks took on the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night the Sharks picked up an overtime win 4-3 at the SAP Center on Thursday night.

The game couldn’t have started off better for the Sharks as Logan Couture on a breakdown in puck management by the Maple Leafs got a goal just 27 seconds in. The assists went to Matt Nieto and Alexander Barabonov as the Sharks as they’ve done many times this season got on the board first.

Feeling the momentum that first line continued to get chances as Nieto not too long after the goal streaked in and shot one wide.

Erik Kallgren the starting goalie for the Leafs had to be on his toes early in the game as the chances piled on.

Despite the early momentum the Leafs found a way to respond as David Kampf scored off a nice pass by Alexander Kerfoot and helped as well by Mitch Marner. It came at the 14:46 mark of the first and seemed to breathe new life into the Leafs.

Helping to further the Leafs continued pressure the Sharks took a too many men penalty and put a dangerous power play on the ice. The penalty kill would come through for the Sharks though the Leafs had plenty of good looks.

By the end of the first a shot count that originally favored the Sharks now favored the Leafs at 9-5.

The second period for the Sharks got off to a rocky start as Radim Simek got a penalty for tripping. The penalty kill that has been extremely good though for the Sharks continued to be as they killed it off.

Following that up would be the Maple Leafs though as they would take two penalties simultaneously to give the Sharks a five on three. With both T.J. Brodie and Pierre Engvall sitting in the box blood was in the water for the power play unit.

It would not take long for the power play unit to capitalize as Erik Karlsson gave it to Barabonov on a one touch who then feed it to Couture for the goal. Couture’s second goal came with still some time left on the five on three and so the Sharks remained on the power play.

The power play then struck again for the Sharks and at first it appeared to be Couture’s giving him the hat trick. However after further inspection the goal went to Timo Meier though by that time it was too late as many hats had already been thrown.

Meier commented on the delayed correction after the game, “Yea I mean sorry for all the people that threw the hats but you know you’d love to see Logan get a hat trick. But anyways were happy to win the game.”

With a 3-1 lead it seemed like everything was clicking in the second period for team teal. The Leafs actually ended up taking another penalty this time for delay of game but it was killed off this time by penalty kill.

In the dying moments of the second period though the Sharks gave up a four on two and the Leafs converted on the defensive blemish. This time Marner got the goal from Morgan Rielly and Alexander Kerfoot making it a 3-2 game off tic tac toe style play.

With the third period starting and the Sharks having a sour taste in their mouths they did not get off to a great start. As the penalty kill would be busy with a couple quick penalties.

On one of these penalties the power play for the Maple Leafs came through as Auston Matthews one timed an absolute bomb from the top of the slot. The assists going to Rielly and John Tavares on the goal that tied the game at three.

For the rest of the period the teams fought back and forth exchanging chances. The Maple Leafs though ended up with the more threatening looks as Kaapo Kahkonen had to be sharp making 22 saves.

The teams fought to a draw and so overtime would have to be played in front of the home crowd for the Sharks. Those same fans though had something to cheer about pretty quickly into the match.

Off a beautiful defensive play by Timo Meier on a pass he poked it away and spotted Erik Karlsson skating out of the zone. On a perfect pass he fead Karlsson and Erik did the rest as he went backhand forehand top shelf to end the game in OT at 4-3.

“It was nice the way it developed I think I just had to get going and trust Timo that he would get the puck there. I made up my mind fairly early and stuck to it and it went in,” Karlsson said postgame.

For the home crowd at SAP Center it was an exhilarating win and a great way to end the game.

The San Jose Sharks next game will be against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday at SAP Center for a 1:30pm faceoff.

Suns Wallop Golden State 134-105; Seven technicals and Thompson first career ejection

Suns Wallop Golden State 134-105

Tuesday night the Golden State Warriors (2-2) took on the Phoenix Suns (3-1) at Footprint Center. Both teams are coming off wins, the Warriors beating the Kings Sunday 130-125 and the Suns handling the Clippers 112-95 on Sun Oct 23. Golden State has struggled in transition and will be looking for some improvement against a very tough Phoenix Suns.

The Warriors got a fast start and led through the opening minutes before the Suns got going. With five minutes left in the first quarter the Suns had taken a ten point lead and after the first 12 minutes Phoenix held a 37-29 lead. The Warriors had shot at 46% and the Suns edged them slightly shooting at 48%.

In the Warriors last game, the second unit had struggled but in this outing these young guys were nothing short of terrific. This unit had cut the Suns lead from eight points to a tie game at 39 in the early minutes of the second quarter.

This game remained close with the Suns holding slim leads throughout the quarter. The Warriors Jordan Poole hit a three that was nullified by a shot clock violation in the closing seconds. The Suns Chris Paul hit a three with 0.5 seconds left on the clock and at the half, it was Phoenix with a 72-66 lea

The Suns Devon Booker led the Suns with 16 points scored. Poole had the point high off the bench with 14 points and Warrior guard Stephen Curry led the starting roster with 13 points.

The difference in the first half for the Warriors was points in the paint. James Wiseman and Jonathan Kuminga would need to step up in the second half. They would need some defensive excellence if they wanted to beat the Suns.

The Suns began to run away with the third quarter. They had an 11-0 run and led 94-77 with four minutes left in the third. A blow for the Warriors was the ejection of Klay Thompson, the first of his career. The Suns were getting to the free throw line in this game while the Warriors were not and that had a lot to do with the score of this game.

The Suns had shot 28 free throws in the first three quarters. At the end of the third quarter the Suns had a considerable lead 105-86. Phoenix had scored 33+ points in the first three quarters; they were in total command of this game.

Things began to get tight in the fourth quarter when the Warriors cut a 19 point Sun lead to 12. The Warriors were on a 7-0 run before the Suns began to push back leading 115-99 with under six minutes left in the game.

The Suns continued to extend their lead for the remainder of the game. Booker was relentless finishing with 34 points. The final was 134-105 in a dominating game by Phoenix. The Sun’s defense was just better than Golden State’s.

The high score for the Warriors was Curry with 21 points. It was a lackluster offensive effort from Golden State. They hung with the Suns in the first half but it all came apart in the second half.

Thursday night the Warriors will play Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat at Chase Center. Tipoff will be at 7:00 PM.

Historic night for Kessel as Golden Knights upend Sharks 4-2

Vegas’ Phil Kessel scored his first goal of the season while establishing an NHL record for durability on Tuesday, as the Golden Knights defeated San Jose 4-2 at SAP Center.

The NHL Pacific Division-leading Golden Knights improved to 6-2, while San Jose is in sixth place in the Pacific with a 2-7 mark.

Kessel – who broke in with the Boston Bruins in 2006 and also played for Toronto, Pittsburgh and Arizona – has played in 990 straight games, breaking the old record held by Keith Yandle. He hasn’t missed a game since 2009, playing 12 consecutive seasons without missing a contest.

Kessel’s goal, the 400th of his career, came at 15:51 of the first period, assisted by Brett Howden.

San Jose came back with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead in the second period. Nico Sturm’s fourth goal of the season at 5:53 was the equalizer, and Matt Nieto scored his first goal of the season at 19:25, assisted by Tomas Hertl.

55 seconds into the third period, Vegas tied the game at 2-2 on a goal by Shea Theodore. William Karlsson’s third goal of the year put the Golden Knights ahead 3-2 at 13:13. Mark Stone tacked on the fourth Vegas goal at 14:15.

Only three penalties were called in the game – one against Sturm for interference at 15:14 of the second period, and two against Vegas in the third period.

James Reimer stopped 27 of 31 shots for San Jose, while the Golden Knights’ netminder Adin Hill faced 31 shots, stopping 29.

The Sharks host Toronto on Thursday, with a 7:30 p.m. opening faceoff.

#1 Charanbir, to get this show started a 5.1 earthquake shook the South Bay 11:42 am followed by a 3.1 shaker just four minutes later at 11:46 am despite the shaking Sharks fans weren’t intimidated as they host the Vegas Golden Knights at SAP Center tonight.

#1 San Jose Sharks (2-6-0) Nick Bonino has been sidelined with an upper body injury and is expected to be out of action for tonight’s game against the Golden Knights (5-2-0).

#2 It will be the second straight game that Bonino will miss but the Sharks say he could be back on Thursday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs at SAP Center.

#3 Charanbir it’s a been a tough go for Bonino he hasn’t scored in seven games for the Sharks and the Sharks are hoping to see him make a strong comeback on offense.

#4 Tonight Charanbir is the first of six throw back sweater nights for the Sharks who will be wearing their California Golden Seals throw back jerseys. The Seals were the Bay Area’s first NHL team from 1966-1976. The Bay didn’t have an NHL team for 15 years until the Sharks came along in 1991.

#5 The Sharks went 2-2 on this last road trip and are 2-6 are hoping to defeat the Golden Knights who defeated the Maple Leafs in their last game on Monday night 3-1. Charanbir how do you see these two teams matching up tonight?

Sharks, Reimer Shut Out Flyers 3-0; Sharks go 2-2 on road trip

The San Jose Sharks (2-6-0) wrapped up the East Coast road trip going a respectable 2-2 after beating the Philadelphia Flyers (4-2-0) 3-0 Sunday night from the Wells Fargo Center. The Sharks reversed a recent trend of poor second periods, scoring twice on Erik Karlsson and Steven Lorentz strikes while adding the empty netter. James Reimer made 30 saves for the shutout.

Karlsson opened the scoring 9:34 into the second period after beating goalie Felix Sandstrom with a slap shot for his team-leading third goal of the year. Tomas Hertl assisted on the goal and Alexander Barabanov picked up his first point of the year with a secondary assist.

Steven Lorentz picked up his first goal in Teal after joining the team in the Brent Burns trade with Carolina in the offseason. Jaycob Megna flipped what appeared to be a harmless shot on Sandstrom, but Lorentz buzzed the net to tip the puck in for a 2-0 lead with 1:31 left in the second period. Nico Sturm added an empty netter to match Karlsson for the team lead I’m goals.

The Sharks return home for a tough stretch, facing the rival Golden Knights Tuesday, the Maple Leafs Thursday and the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday.

#1 Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty express his excitement about the possibility of facing the Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin this Saturday night at the Capital One Center in DC. Doughty has missed the last two games that the Kings faced the Caps the first time Nov 17th due to a knee contusion and the second time with Covid-19 protocols.

#2 Doughty has been able to block Ovechkin’s in 19 previous games he was able to block 31 Capital shots including eight from Ovechkin.

#3 You just can’t keep a good man down and the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Brayden Point is no exception scoring twice against the Florida Panthers on Friday night as the Bolts squeezed by the Panthers with a 3-2 win in Sunrise Florida. The Lightning also beat the New York Islanders 5-3 on Saturday to pick up their third win.

#4 The Vancouver Canucks returned to Rogers Centre in Vancouver Saturday night hosting the Buffalo Sabers, after opening up their first five games of the season all on the road with loses. Was this a matter of just bad scheduling opening up those first five on the road or the Canucks were just that bad?

#5 The San Jose Sharks will be hosting five throw back sweater nights starting Tuesday night at SAP Center in San Jose that will pay tribute to the first NHL team in the Bay Area the California Golden Seals who played at the Oakland Arena from 1966-1976 before moving to Cleveland. The uniforms resemble the Seals old sweaters the other 29 NHL teams are also doing throw back nights as well.

Sharks Can’t Follow Up First Win, Drop 2-1 Dud to Devils

Any boost Thursday’s win over the New York Rangers gave the Sharks was gone by Saturday afternoon. San Jose lost to New Jersey Devils 2-1 at the Prudential center. New Jersey outshot San Jose 36-22, including 20-8 in the pivotal second period. The Sharks Fall to 1-6-0 in the first seven games.

Ygor Sherangovich and Dawson Mercer scored for the Devils, while Kevin Labanc had the lone Sharks tally. Despite the loss, San Jose goalie Kaapo Kähkönen turned in a strong performance in net, making 34 saves on 36 attempts.

Sherangovich opened the scoring in the second period, pickpocketing Marc-Edouard Vlasic before beating Kähkönen one-on-one 13:21 into the second period. Mercer scored on the power play at the 15:43 mark after taking a Nico Hischier pass in the slot, missing on the initial chance but converting on the rebound for the 2-0 lead.

New Jersey also had a goal disallowed after review found Nico Hischier directed the puck into the net with a distinct kicking motion. Labanc breathed new life into the Sharks just 32 seconds later, skating in on the rush and looking pass to Nico Sturm but instead firing the puck on MacKenzie Blackwood for his first goal since November 22nd of last season.

He appeared in only 22 games last season due to injury. Scott Harrington and Oskar Lindblom assisted for their first helpers as Sharks. The Sharks face a surprisingly tough task if they want to split the road trip Sunday. They face the 3-1-0 Philadelphia Flyers who are thriving under new coach John Tortorella despite expectations to the contrary.

Quinn, Grier, Sharks get First W With 3-2 OT Win Over Rangers

Erik Karlsson’s reaction said it all; arms stretched out in equal parts jubilation and relief. The San Jose Sharks have won their first game of the 2022-23 season, beating Eastern Conference juggernauts the New York Rangers 3-2 in overtime at Madison Square Garden Thursday night.

Karlsson scored the winner 49 seconds into overtime, Radim Simek scored his first goal since December of 2021 and Logan Couture picked up a power play strike in the win that came with added significance.

It marks Sharks Head Coach David Quinn’s first win in teal against the team that sacked him in May 2021 after 3 seasons. Mike Grier, taking the reigns from Doug Wilson as general manager in the offseason, also enjoyed his first win in command.

Karlsson’s OT goal came on a spirited effort that saw the former Norris winner tripped up driving to the net. While he went to the ice, he maintained control of the puck and fed the puck to Timo Meier. Meier took the puck behind the net, dishing to Karlsson in the slot for the winner.

San Jose was up 1-0 after the 1st period thanks to Couture’s power play goal 6:02 into the game (Karlsson assisted for a two point night), but New York scored twice in the first half of the 2nd period on goals from Filip Chytil and NHL points leader Artemi Panarin for a 2-1 lead.

Simek beat Igor Shesterkin with a wrister after trailing Matt Nieto into the slot with 6:50 to go before the second intermission. San Jose entered the 3rd trailing the Blueshirts 21-9 but pressed furiously to a 16-2 3rd period shot differential, but Shesterkin turned aside all shots as a reigning Vezina trophy winner is prone to do. James Reimer was stout in net for San Jose, turning aside 21 of the Rangers’ 23 shots.

The grueling East Coast swing wraps up for the Sharks with two matches in the Tri-State. They face the Devils Saturday before a Sunday showdown with the Flyers.

Sharks Fall 5-2 to Isles, on Verge of Matching Worst Start

The San Jose Sharks are still searching for their first win and points of the season after another thumping, this time at the hands of the New York Islanders 5-2 Tuesday night.

Nicole Sturm and Evgeny Svechnikov both scored their second goals of the season in the loss. The Islanders pepper James Reimer with 45 shots, putting the Sharks one loss away from matching the franchise record.

Sturm beat Semyon Varlamov on a wrist shot 12:50 into the first period, but the lead would be short-lived. Anders Lee and Zach Parise scored in the middle minutes of the second period. 

Svechnikov beat Varlamov on a deflection in the waning minutes of the second period, his second point of the game after assisting on Sturm’s strike. Any hopes of heading into the break tied wasn’t in the cards. Oliver Wahsltrom scored with 56 seconds left in the period for a 3-2 lead.

Wahlstrom would score again 5:24 into the third and Cal Clutterbuck added the empty netter for the Sharks second five-goal loss in as many games.

The Sharks continue on the first true road trip of the season when they face coach David Quinn’s old side, the Rangers Thursday night.
