Sharks Rally to Erase 2 Goal Deficit, Beat Wild 3-2 in Shootout for First Back-to-back Wins of Season

The San Jose Sharks scored two goals in the final seven minutes to erase a two-goal deficit and finished off the Minnesota Wild in a shootout for their first set of consecutive wins. Steven Lorentz scored his second goal of the year for San Jose (59-3), Nico Sturm scored his sixth and James Reimer made 28 saves for the win.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic had a pair of assists and Erik Karlsson added a helper for his team-leading 22nd point of the season. Connor Dewar and Frederick Gaudreau tallied the goals for Minnesota (7-6-2) while Filip Gustavsson made 35 saves.

Kirill Kaprizov had the lone goal of the shootout when Nick Bonino hit the ice for the Sharks third do-or-die shot. He beat Gustavsson then Reimer made a toe save on Joel Eriksson Ek to give San Jose a shot to win in the fourth round. Alexander Barabanov went five-hole on Gustavsson to seal the deal for the two points.

With the Sharks Trailing 2-0, Lorentz started the comeback after grazing the net front and picking up a rebound off Vlasic’s point shot. His first backhander wasn’t successful but he got a second opportunity and buried it at the 13:56 mark.

Sturm, a member of the Minnesota Wild from 2018 to a mid-season trade last year, created the tying goal out of nothing. He picked the puck off the Sharks end boards while Minnesota were transitioning back to defense. He fed it to Vlasic in the Sharks end and Vlasic dished it to Karlsson coming down the center lane.

Karlsson backhanded it to Sturm before crossing the defensive blue line and Sturm skated it all the way into the offensive zone, snapping a wrist shot before the faceoff circle that beat Gustavsson stick side for a 2-2 tie with 4:11 left.

Gaudreau’s goal 6:45 into the first period was a thing of beauty both for the goal and Kaprizov’s assist. Kaprizov was able to thread a puck through three Sharks defenders on the boards in an inexplicable angle. Gaudreau was turned with his back to the end wall, but he turned and waited out Reimer skating across the crease for the 1-0 lead.

The other Wild goal came on a Sharks gaffe with Karlsson manning the point on the power play. The defenseman was back skating butay have hit a divot and took a tumble, giving Mason Shaw a breakaway chance. Dewar joined Jim for a 2-on-0, Shaw did the unselfish thing and made the pass and Dewar buried the easy goal 3:37 into the third.

After winning back-to-back games where they weren’t their best, the Sharks will need their A-game for the win in their next game. They travel to Sin City to face the Western Conference leader Golden Knights Tuesday night.

Sharks Survive Dallas 5-4 to Snap Five-Game Skid, Meier Scores in Fifth-Straight

San Jose Sharks right wing Timo Meier celebrates after scoring against the Dallas Stars in the second period in Dallas on Fri Nov 11, 2022 (AP News photo)

By Matthew Harrington

The San Jose Sharks avenged a loss to the last place St. Louis Blues the night before by holding on to defeat former Sharks coach Peter DeBoer and the Dallas Stars 5-4 Friday and snap a five-game losing streak. Timo Meier scored in his fifth-straight contest, Alexander Barabanov, Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture each had a goal and an assist and Evgeny Svechnikov scored his 3rd goal of the season for San Jose.

Dallas captain Jamie Benn scored a pair of goals and the top line for Dallas (8-5-1) of Joe Pavelski, Roope Hintz and Jason Robertson combined for 5 points in a losing effort. Stars netminder Jake Oettinger, a former tutee of Sharks coach David Quinn when Quinn coached Boston University, made 13 saves on 18 shots in his first game action after missing the previous four games. San Jose’s James Reimer earned the win over last year’s playoff phenom though, making 25 saves on 29 shots.

After finishing the first period tied 2-2 the Sharks (4-9-3) pulled away in a bizarre second period. Team Teal only put four shots on goal over the 20 minutes, but Timo Meier beat Oettinger clean on a wrist shot over the netminder’s right shoulder 29 seconds into the period.

Kevin Labanc got the assist on Meier’s 7th goal of the year after picking up a turnover created by Meier. 36 seconds later, the Sharks captain Couture scored after another Shark, Alexander Barabanov, picked off a turnover and fed for a one-timer. Couture now has goals in back-to-back games after scoring to put the Sharks period shooting percentage at 50% while giving the Sharks a 4-2 lead.

Tomas Hertl put the Sharks up by 3 after deking Oettinger in close on a backhand 29 seconds into the third period, taking a pass from Meier to slink in alone. Jaycob Megna also assited on the goal. Roope Hintz scored 6:18 into the period and Joe Pavelski netted his 7th goal of the campaign at the 12:06 mark but despite out shooting the Sharks 11-3 in the last frame they couldn’t find the equalizer to force overtime.

Jamie Benn opened the scoring 4:42 into play, but Alexander Barabanov scored at the 6:13 mark to tie the game. The Sharks took the first lead of the night at the 12:18 mark when Svechnikov beat Oettinger, but Benn scored his second with just 21 seconds left in the first to tie the game after 20 minutes.

San Jose continues its tour of Central Division foes with a trip to the State of Hockey Sunday afternoon. After the stop in Minnesota, they face Pacific Division rivals the Vegas Golden Knights on The Strip Tuesday to wrap up a four-game road trip.

Blues Snap 8-Game Skid, Beat Sharks 5-3; San Jose extends skid to 5 games

The San Jose Sharks couldn’t continue the St. Louis Blues snide Thursday night, dropping a 5-3 loss in the Show Me State to help the Blues snap an 8-game losing streak. The big guns Timo Meier, Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture scored for the Sharks and Erik Karlsson picked up a pair of assists but Calle Rosen broke a 3-3 tie in the third and Noel Acciari scored an empty-netter for the Blues victory and a fifth-straight San Jose loss. St. Louis (4-8-0) is now just one point back of San Jose for the last spot in the Western Conference.

San Jose (3-9-3) started off slowly, giving up a Torey Krug goal just 2:30 into the game but responded with a goal with 3:41 left in the period. The goal is credited to Timo Meier in the official scorecard, but was an own-goal by Justin Faulk on a point shot from Erik Karlsson. The puck bounced around and could credibly have been credited to Karlsson, Meier or Tomas Hertl. Regardless, it tied the game 1-1 after one period.

Jordan Kyrou got lost in Sharks coverage for an easy backdoor power play goal 6:59 into the second period for a 2-1 lead, but Hertl provided the equalizer after Kevin Labanc’s off angle shot rebounded off Jordan Binnington in the Blues net for a perfect slot chance. Hertl converted on it for a 2-all hockey game with 6:55 left in the period.

The Blues wouldn’t let the period play out like the first, scoring with 1:52 left in the middle stanza on Brandon Saad’s first goal of the year. The Sharks captain Logan Couture knotted the game at 3-3 1:26 into the third when Karlsson flicked a puck on net from the boards and Couture tipped it past Binnington, one of three goals on 30 Sharks shots. Rosen scored the winner on a rare point shot goal 8:20 into the period. Acciari scored the empty netter with 19 seconds left. Kaapo Kahkohnen made 28 saves on 32 shots in the loss.

The Sharks won’t have long to ruminate on the loss against the current cellar dweller. They travel to Dallas to face the Stars Friday in the Big D. The Stars are currently second in the Central Division and could see their superstar goalie Jake Oettinger return from injury to face team Teal.

The Sharks surged ahead 3-2 in the second period with goals by Meier, his fifth of the year at 8:09, and a power-play goal by Luke Kunin at 16:35. Erik Karlsson extended his point streak to five games with the assist on Kunin’s goal.

Panthers score late goal force shootout against Sharks who drop third game in a row in 4-3 final

Erik Karlsson smiles as he gets ready for a game against the Florida Panthers on November 3rd at SAP Center in San Jose (@SanJoseSharks photo)

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

SAN JOSE–The San Jose Sharks played the Florida Panthers at home were they lost in a very similar fashion as last game falling in a shootout by 4-3.

In a game between west and east coast teams you usually expect a little bit of a feeling process but the Sharks and the Panthers wasted no time at all.

The first line for San Jose got the juices flowing putting the Panthers on their toes with a couple of chances form Jacob Megna and Alexander Barabonov.

Alexander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk saw fit to respond though with a couple chances of their own but James Riemer held on strong.

The Sam Bennet line was also giving the Sharks some troubles as the Panthers began to grab onto the momentum and not let go.

10:46 into the first period Luke Kunin hit Patric Hornqvist that made contact with his head and sent him crumpled to the ice.

Ryan Lomberg skated over and responded by pushing Kunin down to the ice.

After the referees took their time and looked at the hit to see if it was a game misconduct they decided it was. Thus giving the Panthers a five minute power play as well as ejecting Kunin from the game.

Going into this game though the Panthers have had one of the worst power plays and it showed early.

Florida could not get much going to start with and the penalty kill unit looked solid.

Late into the power play though Tkachuk fead out in front to Barkov who then did a give and go with Anton Lundell out front. With Reimer scrambling back and forth Barkov tucked it in from Lundell and Tkachuk to make it 1-0 13:43 into the first period.

The rest of the period played out with the Panther keeping up the positive momentum getting some more chances.

It continued to be one goal lead for Florida heading into the intermission with the Panthers also leading in shots at 19-9.

The second period started off similarly for the Sharks as the chances came early. Bobrovsky though held on and stymied the offense for the Sharks.

After that it was a relatively quiet period as both teams kept it at a tight checking affair.

The fireworks began late into the period as Radko Gudas on a one-timer from the point fired one past Reimer to make it 2-0. The assists going to both Tkachuk and Carter Verhaeghe as Reimer most likely would want that one back.

Tomas Hertl not too long after the goal almost managed to respond as he fired one on net that squeezed through Bobrovsky’s pads. Coming in to save the day Gudas would fly in and sweep the puck away.

Not quite done yet Gudas then proceeded to board Timo Meier causing a scrum though no fight came out of the talking.

It ended up only being a two minute penalty but was late enough that the penalty carried over into the third period.

The shots at the end of the second being 33-22 in favor of Florida.

For the Panthers the third period couldn’t get off too a much worse start as Gustav Forsling took a penalty to make it a five on three for the Sharks.

On the ensuing power play Barabonov found Meier wide open on the right wing who sniped it past a sprawled out Bobrovsky. Erik Karlsson also got an apple on the play continuing his torrid streak.

The Panthers would manage to kill off the rest of the penalty but not too long after Karlsson found the back of the net yet again. This time right off the face-off shooting it through a maze of players and over Bobrovsky’s blocker.

Nick Bonino would end up with the only assist as the Sharks had managed to tie the game at two.

After the quick spree of Sharks goals the play evened out for a little bit. Around five minutes after Karlsson’s goal another Sharks defensman found the board.

This time it was Matt Benning firing one from the point alluding Bobrovsky but most importantly giving the Sharks the lead at 3-2. Karlsson and Logan Couture would end up with the assists on the play.

The Sharks then strapped down and tried to hold on as Florida pulled their goalie.

At first the Sharks appeared to be in good shape with the Panthers not able to find the tying goal.

18:38 into the third period in the dying moments Verhaeghe walked in from the left wing boards and shot it past Reimer to tie it. Helping out with the heart breaking goal would be Tkachuk and Lindell.

Yet again SAP Center got extra hockey with Matt Nieto, Nico Sturm, and Mario Ferraro starting for the Sharks in overtime.

The overtime period was rather even until the Sharks took a too many men penalty and gave Florida the perfect opportunity to win.

Thankfully for San Jose though just 15 seconds into the power play as Brandon Montour took a penalty for holding.

Both teams played out the rest of the period back to three skaters each, forcing another shootout for the Sharks.

It was the second shootout in a row for the Sharks as they dropped their previous shootout against the Anaheim Ducks. The Sharks have lost three games in a row all on home ice to the Tampa Bay Lightning, Ducks and Thursday night to the Panthers.

This one would be no different as Sam Reinhart scored in the fourth round to win it 4-3.

The Sharks next game will be another home game this time against the Anaheim Ducks this Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Ducks nip Sharks 6-5 in overtime shootout

Anaheim Ducks center Ryan Strome, middle, is congratulated by defenseman John Klingberg, left, and right wing Troy Terry (19) after Strome’s goal in the second period against the San Jose Sharks at the SAP Center in San Jose on Tue Nov 1, 2022

Tuesday, November 1, 2022

Anaheim came up with a pair of goals in the tie-breaking overtime shootout, and defeated San Jose 6-5 Tuesday in an NHL Pacific contest at SAP Center.

After the scoreless overtime period, Trevor Zegras and Troy Terry scored for the Ducks in the shootout, while Logan Couture had the San Jose goal. But Anaheim goaltender Anthony Stolarz turned away shots by Erik Karlsson and Kevin Labanc, earning his fifth win of the season.

The Sharks (3-8-1) forced the extra period at 17:38 of the third period on Karlsson’s third goal of the game and his ninth of the season, with assists on the equalizer by Alexander Barbanov and Tomas Hertl. Anaheim had pulled Stolarz in favor of a sixth attacker.

It was the first three-goal game of Karlsson’s career, and the first ever by a Sharks defenseman. A true hat trick is three uninterrupted goals within one period.

At 11:31 of the third period, Anaheim (3-5-1) took a 5-4 lead on a goal by Max Comtois.

San Jose tied the game at 4-4 with a pair of goals by Timo Meier in the second period. Meier’s first goal was a 4-on-3 power-play tally with assists from Barabanov and Karlsson at 3:28 with the Ducks’ Max Jones serving a 2-minute minor for holding the stick at 3:05. Twenty-eight seconds later San Jose’s Luke Kunin and Anaheim’s Nathan Beaulieu were serving 5-minute majors for fighting.

Meier’s second goal, and third of the season, was unassisted at 15:31. He was credited with the goal after the Ducks’ Jakob Silfverberg accidentally sent the puck into his own net.

In between Meier’s goals, Ryan Strome notched his second goal of the season for Anaheim at 15:10.

Adam Henrique scored his first two goals of the season for Anaheim, helping the Ducks build a 3-2 lead in the first period. Henrique’s first tally at 5:16 opened the scoring, followed by a pair of goals by Erik Karlsson to give the Sharks a 2-1 lead.

Karlsson’s first goal was assisted by Evgeny Svechnikov and Hertl ay 6:18, with his second goal of the period and eighth of the season coming 23 seconds later on assists by Jaycob Megna and Nico Sturm.

Frank Vatrano tied the game at 2-2 for Anaheim at 10:52, and Henrique’s second goal came with 15 seconds remaining in the period to give the Ducks a one-goal lead at the first intermission.

Sharks goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen had 39 saves.

Back and forth affair between Sharks and Lightning ends with Tampa getting victory by score of 4-3

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

In what was a very close affair the San Jose Sharks played host to the Tampa Bay Lightning and lost on home ice by a final of 4-3 on Saturday night.

The start of this game was quite the reverse of last game against the Toronto Maple Leafs were they got off to a solid start. Instead in this one the Lightning would strike very early into the game.

The goal was not quite as quick as Couture’s goal last game but instead 31 seconds in Victor Hedman finished on a nice pass across by Brayden Point.

Unlike last game though the Sharks responded extremely fast as Erik Karlsson who has been absolutely on fire potted his 5th goal of the season. It was a nice feed from Tomas Hertl that let Karlsson skate right in and snipe it past Andrei Vasilevskiy.

After the flurry of goals to kick things off the teams found themselves locked in a stalemate exchanging shots and looks. Both teams also got a power play opportunity in the period though both teams struck out on the chance.

Later in the first though right after the one power play opportunity for the Lightning Alex Killorn shot one from the slot and puck ricocheted right out in front. Waiting there was Ross Colton who deposited into the wide open net past James Riemer.

That ended up being the final goal of the period with the shots ending in favor of the Lightning at 11-6.

It took a little longer to find the first goal of the period but finally Nico Sturm broke the silence on a wrister from far out that made Vasilavskiy look very human. It was one that he definitely would want back while Luke Kunin and Marc-Edouard Vlasic got the assists.

The rest of the second period played out tightly similar to the first period. 18:41 into the second though Killorn got himself on the board again.

This time it would be a goal with Nick Paul and Erik Cernak getting the assists tying the game in the dying moments of the second. Making the score 3-2 heading into the third in favor of the Lightning.

Despite the late goal the Sharks started off the third period on a positive note drawing a penalty. With Karlsson getting another opportunity to shine he did just that.

Right off the opening faceoff of the power play the puck was won back to Karlsson who skated right into the slot and ripped another one home. Timo Meier and Tomas Hertl got the assists on the goal while Karlsson’s goal total is now up to 6 on the season.

The third period then played out in a very methodical fashion with both teams making sure not to make a mistake.

For the Sharks though they ended up making a crucial mistake in the dying minutes.

With Brayden Point skating in the Sharks defense backed up and let him feed it across to Brandon Hagel who then fead it right back across to a wide open Nikita Kucherov. He tapped it in and the Lightning took the lead with only 56.2 seconds remaining on the clock.

The Sharks tried to get the late tying goal but the effort would not be enough as they skated off the ice with the loss.

The San Jose Sharks next game is at home against the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
