Soderstrom hits two HRs, but A’s just short of first Sacramento win in 5-4 loss to Padres

WEST SACRAMENTO–The A’s came up just short Monday night, as despite two home runs by Tyler Soderstrom, the San Diego Padres came in and beat the A’s by a final of 5-4 in the series opener at Sutter Health Park.

After getting swept in their first home series against the Cubs last week, the A’s took two out of three in Denver against the Rockies. Now they returned to their rental home looking for their first win in Sacramento with the San Diego Padres making their first trip to the state capital.

There wouldn’t be any better night for the A’s first home win. Their ace, Luis Severino, was on the mound, and it was an absolutely-gorgeous night in what is truly a major league-caliber area in Sacramento.

Things wouldn’t start easy for Severino and the A’s in the top of the first inning. Luis Arraez and Manny Machado hit back-to-back doubles with one out to give the Padres a quick 1-0 lead. Jake Croenworth then came up and hit a two-run home run, much to the delight of the Padres fans who had made the trek up north from San Diego, to make it 3-0.

Michael King made the start for San Diego, and he had to battle his way through a rocky first two innings. The A’s were unable to do anything with a pair of walks in the bottom of the first, and then they wasted an opportunity with runners at first and second with one out in the bottom of the second.

Severino appeared to have settled down with a 1-2-3 top of the second, but the Padres tacked on another run off him in the top of the third. Arraez singled with one out, and then Machado shot a double into the gap in right-center to make it 4-0.

The A’s would get on the board with two outs in the bottom of the third when Tyler Soderstrom gulfed a line-drive home run to the A’s bullpen in right. After a 1-2-3 inning by Severino in the top of the fourth, the A’s were ready to do more in the bottom of the fourth.

Miguel Andujar reached on an infield hit to start the bottom of the fourth, and Jacob Wilson followed that up with a base-hit to right to put runners at first and second with nobody out. Gio Urshela flew out to right, but Max Muncy lined a double to left that scored Andujar to make it 4-2. Lawrence Butler then reached on an infield hit to third to make it a one-run game at 4-3.

The A’s had the tying run at third with one out, but they were unable to tie it. Brent Rooker was caught looking at a sinker at the knees after fouling off three-straight two-strike pitches for the second out, and Soderstrom lined out to second.

Severino pitched a pair of scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth, and then Fernando Tatis Jr. made it a 5-3 game with an absolute bomb over the top of what I assume is the A’s new clubhouse out in left. Despite giving up five runs, Severino went seven innings.

King, meanwhile, pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth, and he was pulled following a two-out infield hit by Manny Machado in the bottom of the sixth. Adrian Morejon then struck Butler out on three pitches to end the inning.

Jeremiah Estrada came in for San Diego in the bottom of the seventh, and with one out, Soderstrom hit his second home run of the night to get the run right back and make it 5-4. It went almost to the same spot as his first home run back in the third. Unlike his first home run, however, this one hung up a bit higher, and it went to the grass just behind the A’s bullpen.

That would do it for the scoring. Angel Perdomo pitched a scoreless top of the eighth for the cityless team, and Jason Adam did the same for San Diego in the bottom of the eighth. Perdomo pitched another scoreless inning in the top of the ninth, and Robert Suarez came in to pick up his fifth save with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.

Michael King got the win, and Luis Severino, despite his valiant effort Monday night, was saddled with the loss.

The A’s fall to 4-7, and are now 0-4 at their rental home in West Sac.

The A’s will have another chance to pick up their first Sacramento win on what should be another beautiful evening for baseball Tuesday night. Dylan Cease (1-0, 3.38 ERA) will take the ball for San Diego tomorrow night, and Sacramento will counter with the lefty, Jeffrey Springs (2-2, 3.27 ERA).

First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m.

The A’s president Sandy Dean said that the funds will come through from the Fisher family pooling their efforts together and from loans coming from Goldman Sachs and US Bank. When is the question will it happen?

#4 The grounds rules for the Las Vegas ballpark are public will own the park and the property of the park that will be transferred by the A’s to the Las Vegas Stadium Authority including $100 million in development costs before the SB1 funds are released. The public will hold $50 million until the final work on the park is completed.

#5 The A’s are heavily depending on sellouts they will depend heavily on tourists to fill the bill as they need to sell out every event at the Tropicana for the next 30 years to pay for the park. The A’s had projected that 70% of the fans coming to the park will be locals but previously said they depended on tourism.

#1 San Diego Padres wife of chairman Peter Seidler, Sheel Seidler is suing Peter’s two brothers Robert and Matthew Seidler on Monday for control of the Padres. Sheel filed the motion in Texas probate court along with her three children. Sheel said she has been ostracized from the team since Peter’s death in November 2023. The Padres said on Dec 21 that Peter’s older brother John would become the team’s controlling person. Sheel has filed a the lawsuit opposing such claims that go against the wishes of her husband Peter.

#2 The Cincinnati Reds acquired infielder Gavin Lux from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lux comes to the Reds for a draft pick and an outfield prospect. Lux won two World Series titles with the Dodgers and was considered one of the top prospects in baseball. Hyeseong Kim signed with the Dodgers last week and Mookie Betts will move to shortstop. Lux hit .251, 10 home runs, 50 RBIs and 110 hits.

#3 Former New York Met David Wright uniform number five will be retired. Wright’s will become the tenth player to have his number retire by the Mets since owner Steve Cohen had owned the team since 2021. Wright joins the Mets Hall of Fame joining pitcher Tom Seaver both will enter the Mets Hall of Fame on the same day.

#4 The San Francisco Giants have signed pitcher Justin Verlander for one year at $15 million. Verlander had a 8.10 ERA over 17 games last season.

#4 Kansas City Royals Michael Lorenzen agreed to a one year $7 million contract. Lorenzen rejoins the Royals as he was part of their stretch run in the latter part of the 2024 season. Lorenzen 33 was 7-6 with a 3.31 ERA in 130 1/3 innings with Texas and Kansas City last season.

#5 Amaury it now comes down to six MLB teams in the Roki Sasaki sweepstakes. Dodgers, New York Mets, New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers, and San Francisco Giants. Sources have said the Dodgers and Padres are top two teams in the hunt for Sasaki. Sasaki’s agent Joel Wolfe said that Saski might play in a mid to small market club which could open it up to all MLB clubs.

#3 You’ve had the opportunity to work with Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt who was a former Oakland A’s catcher how surprising or not surprising is it that he is on his way to winning the AL Manager of the Year Award for this year.

#4 Talk about how impressive it was for the Guardians to come back down 1-2 and win two straight to win the ALDS and advance.

#5 Charlie talk about the amazing come back by the Los Angeles Dodgers who were down 1-2 in the series with the San Diego Padres came back in games 4 and 5 to win it. The Padres came out like gang busters but the Dodgers whose been there before show that good teams can make the come back.

6. Charlie the Tropicana in Tampa Bay has severe roof damage from Hurricanes Heline and Milton. The Rays are on the hook to pay for the repairs and not their insurer. From what you see do the Rays fix the dome or they will have look to play elsewhere until either the Trop is fixed or when their new ballpark is ready and does that mean another big league club playing in a minor league park?

#1 Well Amaury, the Los Angeles Dodgers pulled it off with a 2-0 shoutout over the San Diego Padres on Friday night to advance to the next round of the playoffs winning game 5 and the series 3-2. Dodgers starter Yoshi Yamamoto was effective for five inning of work allowing just five hits and two strikeouts.

#2 The Dodgers face off against the New York Mets at Dodger Stadium for a 5:15pm PT on Sunday night start in game 1 of the NLCS. Starting pitcher for the Mets Kodai Senga (0-0 ERA 4.50) for the Dodgers Jack Flaherty (0-1, 6.75). The Mets took out the Philadelphia Phillies three games to four last Wednesday.

#3 Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt might win AL Manager of the Year just yet. Down 1-2 in the ALDS against the Detroit Tigers the Guardians came back to win game four 5-4 on Thursday to tie the series 2-2 and won game five 7-3 on Saturday to advance to the ALCS.

#4 The Guardians Lane Thomas had a big day with a grand slam home run and five RBIs. The Tigers starter Tarik Skubal got lit up by Thomas and ended up with a line of six plus innings, allowing six hits and five runs. Skubal had been a top contender for the AL Cy Young Award.

#5 The Guardians now face the New York Yankees in the ALCS for game 1 in the Bronx. These two teams have met over their history six times in October. They last met playing five games in the ALDS in 2022 with the Yankees winning the series.

#1 Four playoff games on Thursday Jerry let’s review taking on the first one the Cleveland Guardians are down 1-2 after struggling against the Detroit Tigers. The Guardians were shutout by another excellent exhibition of pitching by Tiger starter Keider Montero who went one inning it was his reliever Brant Hurter who pitched 3.1 innings allowing five hits after Hurter and four Tiger relievers finished off the job shutting out the Guardians for the 3-0 win.

#2 The New York Mets knocked out the Philadelphia Phillies three games out of four in the NLDS. The Mets on Thursday down 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth put together a four run rally and won it in a three run 4-2 decision. The Mets got some quality pitching from starter Jose Quintana who went five innings, two hits and two walks. The Phillies lone run was unearned. The Mets now advance to the next round.

#3 The New York Yankees improved their position in the ALDS with a one run win over the Kansas City Royals two games to one. The Yanks pulled out a 3-2 win in game three at Kaufman Stadium in Kansas City on Thursday night. Tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth the Yankees just skimmed by Royals pitcher Kris Bubic scratching out a run which gave the Yankees one more win away to advance to the next round.

#4 It wasn’t even a contest on Thursday night at Petco Park in San Diego as the Los Angeles Dodgers racked up the runs against the San Diego Padres 8-0 to tie up the series 2-2. The Dodgers avoided elimination going into the series down 1-2. The bats came out for Los Angeles who scored most of their runs early with two runs in each of the second and third innings and three more runs in the top of the seventh inning.

#1 Amaury, just wanted to ask you about the four MLB Wild Card games being played today and see if you can share your thoughts about today’s results. We’ll start with the Detroit Tigers who played the Houston Astros today at Minute Maid Field in the AL Wild Card game. Framber Valdez started for the Astros and Tigers did all the damage against Valdez in the top of the second inning scoring three runs coming away with a 3-1 win in game 1.

#2 The Royals and Orioles battled for the second AL Wild Card game at Camden Yards. The Royals came away with a 1-0 shutout to defeat the Orioles at Camden Yards. The Royals Bobby Witt has been doing it all season Tuesday he drove in the winning run and Royals starting pitcher Cole Ragan pitched six innings of shutout ball to close down the Orioles in game 1.

#3 The New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers might be a tight match at American Family Park in Milwaukee.

#4 The Atlanta Braves will be starting SJ Smith-Shawyer (0-0, 0.00) and the San Diego Padres will be starting Michael King (13-9, 2.95) Shawyer will be pitching against one of baseball’s best teams the San Diego Padres at Petco Park in San Diego.

Aces Finish Off Seattle 85-72, Head Home For Michelob ULTRA Arena Finale Thursday Night

Tuesday night the Las Vegas Aces (26-13) played their last regular season road game taking on the Seattle Storm (24-15). They had what was probably their best first quarter all season shooting at 80%.

The Storm came on strong in the second half tying the game and leading for a minute by a single point. Las Vegas finished off the Storm in the final three minutes of the game winning by the score of 85-72.

The Storm did a great job containing A’Ja Wilson after she had scored ten points in the opening quarter. She scored 11 points in the remaining three quarters for a 21 point night.

Game recap: The Aces could not have had a better start in the first quarter of this game. They shot an unbelievable 80% leading after the first ten minutes of play 29-18. A’Ja Wilson had ten points in the opening quarter.

In the second quarter Las Vegas led by as much as 18 points. The Storm just kept picking away and they outscored the Aces in the second quarter 22-19. At halftime the Aces had a 48-40 lead but a real shift in the game could be seen. The Storm had not led once in the first half but they had more than cut the Las Vegas lead in half.

The Storm would not back down winning the third quarter 21-15. The Aces by the slimmest of margins led as the third quarter ended with Las Vegas on top 63-61. After the impressive ten point start in the opening quarter, A’Ja Wilson had only scored seven points going into the fourth quarter.

The Storm had really contained her. The Aces were having a lot of success from downtown with eight three’s while the Storm only had one. Kelsey Plum had four three’s and Chelsea Gray had three in this crazy battle. It all came down to the fourth quarter.

Less than a minute into the fourth quarter, this game was tied at 63. At 8:26 in the quarter the Storm had taken their first lead of the game 65-64. The Storm tied the game one more time before Las Vegas began to push back.

With less than three minutes left in the game Las Vegas had taken a79-67 lead. The Aces continued to dim the Storm’s hopes extending their lead and with under two minutes left in this game they had a 14 point lead 67-81. Las Vegas had finished this game the way they had started it. The final was 85-72.

This game was a real battle in the second half until the final three minutes of play when the Aces began to really push the score. The Storm had six turnovers in the final quarter three of which three occurred in the final three minutes and coupled with missed shots it was all but over for the Storm. The high score for the Storm was Nneka Ogwumike with 19 points followed by Skylar Diggins-Smith with 17.

The Las Vegas Aces are peaking at the perfect time. With this win, they have won four games in a row. They barely lost to the Liberty without A’Ja Wilson on the floor out for that game. This team right now really looks like they could pull-off a three-peat.

They have the grit and the talent to pull it off but it will not be easy. A’Ja Wilson finished this game with 21 points and seven rebounds which is on the quiet side for her. Kelsey Plum also scored 21 points with seven rebounds.

Jackie Young had a great game with 16 points and four rebounds and the feisty Chelsea Gray finished with 13 points and six rebounds. This was an amazing team effort and Tiffany Hayes was solid off the bench with ten points

Game notes: Tuesday evening the Aces took on the Storm at Climate Pledge Arena. Another packed arena attended the final home game of the regular season. It was another sell-out game with over 15,000 fans. Both of these teams are headed for the playoffs.

The Aces will now head home for their final regular season home game. They will take on the Dallas Wings at Michelob ULTRA Arena Thursday night with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 PM.

#1 Marko, the San Francisco Giants are feeling the pain losing three straight shut out games and on Sunday losing in ten innings 4-3 to the San Diego Padres to close out a long homestand.

#2 The Padres David Peralta hit a tenth inning tiebreaking single as the Padres scored two in the top of the tenth and the Giants fell a run short scoring a run in the bottom of the tenth in the losing cause.

#3 The Giants Heliot Ramos became the first right handed hitter in Oracle Park history (it opened back in 2000) to hit an opposite field home run that hit the water beyond the right field brick wall as homers hit in the water are known as splash hits.

#4 The Giants have now lost four straight games three of those coming on shutouts and Sunday was the first game they got on scoreboard after getting shutout in 32 straight innings. It was the longest drought by any team in the majors since the Kansas City Royals went 33 innings without a run between Aug 15-18 2022.

#5 It’s off to Baltimore and the Orioles at Camden Yards as the Giants open a three game series there on Tuesday night at 3:35pm PT. Giants starter LHP Blake Snell (3-3, 3.52) for the Orioles RHP Albert Suarez (8-5, 3.39).
