According to history, the first baseball trade took place on August 29, 1885, when the Louisville Colonels of the American Association traded John Connor and $750 to the minor leagues for pitcher Toad Ramsey of the Chattanooga Lookouts.
The most famous deal: owner of the Boston Red Sox Harry Frazee sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees for $100,000 plus a $300,000 loan because Frazee needed money to finance a Broadway musical called My Lady Friends. This created the “Curse of the Bambino” keeping the Red Sox from winning the World Series for 86 years, and the start of the New York Yankees dynasty.
With about 60 games left this 2026 season, buyers and sellers are poised to begin dealing as soon as August 3 at 6 pm ET.
For the Giants: They are legitimate sellers. Their biggest and most impactful trade in their history took place in November 1996, bringing Jeff Kent, along with José Vizcaino, Julián Tavarez, and José Roa, to San Francisco from the Cleveland Indians; in return, the Giants sent one of their fan-favorite players, Matt Williams, to Cleveland.
But the most recent deal for the Giants that made big baseball news was when they acquired Boston Red Sox Rafael Devers, taking on the remainder of his very nice (for Devers) 10-year, $313 million contract. This deal took place June 15, 2025, just over a year ago. In return, the Giants sent left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison, right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks, outfield prospect James Tibbs III, and minor-league right-hander José Bello.
Many players will change uniforms over the next few days/weeks, but the most coveted player is Tarik Skubal, currently pitching (maybe for the last time with the Detroit Tigers. Tarik Skubal was born in Hayward, California, a Bay Area kid, but the Giants will not trade for Skubal.

What the Giants need for next Season, if there is a Season

SAN FRANCISCO–Baseball is headed to a lockout by the baseball owners. Some say the players’ only leverage is to strike, maybe during this postseason. However, MLB players cannot strike because the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) remains in effect through December 1, 2026, which means labor peace is totally guaranteed during the playoffs.
The playoffs are during October and sometimes until November, with some World Series taking place that late in the year, but nobody plays in December. Players cannot strike. But owners have been telling everybody in the media they are ready to lock out the players. It would be inconceivable for the 2027 season as a whole not to be played; however, there is also a good chance they will not play 162 games. The only question is how long this lockout will last.
What about the Giants? What are they going to do to improve the product on the field? That is their biggest problem. Oracle Park is one of the most beautiful sports facilities in the world; fans are happy and enjoy taking their families and friends to watch the Giants play. This season has not been fun. The Giants will finish in either last or penultimate place this year, and that was not what Posey and the front office had in mind. Next week and a half could give us an idea of what they are thinking.
1-The Big Deal. Rafael Devers is making $27 million this season and is owed $28.5 million every year from 2027 through 2033. If the Giants trade him, somebody will have to pay him. Devers is not a failure; it is just that his production is close to average levels in the league and that 10-year $313.5 million total commitment is tough for any other baseball club to absorb. Can they trade him? And who needs Devers that badly to make the difference and win? There are only a few teams that would take Devers, not because of his play, but because of the money involved there.
2-Another Big Deal. Willy Adames with a huge contract and a full no-trade clause; Adames has underperformed at the plate. Adames’ contract, including his signing bonus of $22 million, is the largest total value contract in San Francisco Giants history, surpassing Buster Posey’s previous record. Adames and the Giants agreed to a seven-year $182 million contract, which was finalized in December 2024. Remember also, his full no-trade clause gives him the power to refuse any deal he doesn’t like. Is he going to be traded? You tell me, but I am not convinced he will.
3-The Easy One: Luis Arraez. This guy is just a solid star player who is a four time MLB All-Star, three time batting champion, and 2-time Silver Slugger winner; what is not to like here? Oh yeah, he also plays a very good defensive second base. He will be traded, and Giants fans will miss him. Arraez’s salary this year with the Giants is $12 million. And he is worth every penny.
The Chapman Chapter: Chapman’s manager in Oakland Bob Melvin’s favorite player in Oakland. The manager always talks big about Matt Chapman, and one of the reasons he crossed the bay to San Francisco to play for the Giants was because Bob Melvin was managing the Giants and he wanted him, and he got him.
The question is: what can Chapman bring in return to the Giants if they trade him? Nobody knows. But it is most likely that Matt Chapman will be traded. A Gold Glove third baseman who has won five Gold Glove Awards, two Platinum Gloves Awards, and one All-Star selection. At 33 years old, he is still a good player for any team that values defense, and he can also give you a big hit in a key moment in a game. I never underestimate Chapman. He will be traded. The Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox can use a third baseman with experience, especially Boston.
Robbie Ray. A pitcher with lots of value. Since Webb is untouchable, Ray is the one starter that could fly away. Lots of teams can use a pitcher with his stuff. A Cy Young Award winner and two-time All-Star, he is somebody who will definitely help a team point to the postseason. Ray will change uniforms again soon; he has pitched for Detroit, Arizona, Toronto, Seattle, San Francisco, and soon_______?
The Giants have a dysfunctional bullpen: They need talented arms who can hold leads and close a game at any given time; the Giants lack all that. A major weakness for this team is relief meltdowns; they need more reliable arms and guys who can pitch in high-pressure situations. They have to find a way to have a better bullpen, because this 2026 version is not even close. There is no contending team without an established closer.
Note: When you think of any work stoppage, players’ strike or owners’ lockout, think of this. Major League Baseball has reached record-high gross revenues, hitting approximately $12.1 billion. This growth is driven by rising ticket sales, strong sponsorships, and massive individual franchise earnings. As we can see, any prolonged work stoppage is not good for anybody, and it could cause irreparable damage to the game’s reputation.

#1 Lincoln, did all the issues stemming from all the national attention the San Francisco Giants have been getting regarding three Giants pitchers writing Gen 9:12-16 on their caps to Rafael Devers refusing to leave Sunday’s game for pinch runner.
#2 The subject of the Pride hats and the Commissioner of baseball was brought up and the pressure that it brought on Rob Manfred when Sen Hawley wrote to Manfred saying the players should not be disciplined for writing on their caps.
#3 During the Tuesday press conference Posey was asked numerous times about players writing on their caps and what message does that send to the LGBTQ community and about the Commissioner saying the players have the option to wear the Rainbow hat or not. Posey insisted that he would not answer those questions and would only answer baseball related questions.
#4 Some in the LGBTQ community said that the writing of the scriptures targeted them for hate and that the Giants should admit to their mistakes in allowing the three pitchers to write on their caps. Sen Hawley said he would threaten baseball’s anti trust exemption and said it was discrimination against MLB players who profess their Christian faith.
#5 Posey was asked if the Giants will be sellers before the July trade deadline. Posey answered saying he hasn’t got that far yet and is still looking the team over but is open to see what other clubs wants and offers are.

Summer begins on June 21; stores like Macy’s cannot wait to mark down merchandise, and some items are already marked down by as much as 30%. The baseball world, which is also big business like retail markets, is knocking on the door of what could be a busy summer for players changing uniforms.
During this time of the season, as July 4 approaches, teams usually conduct their evaluations. There are just two types of transactions for Front Offices, buyers and sellers. The San Francisco Giants, who were not considered serious contenders at the start of the season, but nobody could have predicted that their season could go south so quickly, and they might not even reach their 81-81 record season-ending last year, there is only one thing they can do: to improve the team for next season and beyond.
The Giants will be sellers; there is no doubt about it. They have some good veteran players who could go to teams that still have hope this year. Although the Giants do not say they are rebuilding, they insist that they are not buying players either, making a clear path for the future.
If the 2027 season is very much in doubt because a big labor battle is heating up between the owners, who want to lock out the players, and the players’ union, which refuses to accept a salary cap.However, there are a few scenarios where I believe the Giants can improve.
Big Giants items they could offer? 1- Logan Webb. He is still a very good pitcher, a #1 on most teams. He will bring other players of value and potential, giving the Giants a new look. 2-Luis Arraez. The three-time batting champion (with three different teams) could try his fortune somewhere else for a fourth batting championship; he is very capable, very good contact hitter. He is on an expiring one-year $12 million contract with a team going nowhere, and he is most likely the most valuable trade bait for the Giants today. 3-Rafael Devers. I would trade him, but they will probably not get rid of him, because of “mucho dinero,” lots of money still owed on his contract when he came from Boston.
However, I would not be surprised if they deal Rafael Devers. In over 40 years in this business, I have seen stuff that makes me scratch my head. I believe this trio of established stars is something the Giants front office could “sell”, as they are basically looking to unload impending free agents and expensive veterans; they have to shift their focus to acquiring prospects and retooling for the future.
These are some of the challenges the San Francisco Giants front office faces this summer. They have to “rebuild” a bullpen, which, in my humble opinion, is embarrassing. Giants could have a busy summer ahead. Sometimes, a team, even with talent, lacks that chemistry, that desire to win. This is the case of the 2026 SF Giants version.

#1 Michael, with the promotions of Trevor McDonald, Bryce Eldrige, and Jesus Rodriguez from Triple A Sacramento it looked like it motivated the parent San Francisco Giants into snapping their six game losing streak Monday.
#2 Starter Trevor McDonald threw for seven innings, allowing two hits, didn’t allow a run, and struck out eight batters. Was it a matter of the San Diego Padres weren’t familar with McDonald or he kept them off balance with some good pitches.
#3 Once the Giants returned to Oracle park and won on Monday 3-2 they picked up their seventh win in their last nine home games. They do respond to the home cooking.
#4 First baseman Rafael Devers also responded hitting in his second multi hit game of the season with two RBIs. Is he seeing the ball a lot better?

#1 Seiya Suzuki will not make the season opener due to a minor ligament strain in his right knee he suffered during the World Baseball Classic according Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell. Counsell is waiting to see if the club will put Suzuki on the IL. Suzuki also will miss opening day.
#2 Former Oakland A’s pitcher and New York Mets left hand pitcher Sean Manaea will start the season in the bullpen according to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza. Manaea’s role will be he will follow the starting pitcher pitching mulitiple innings. The Mets announced their starting rotation from one to five, Freddy Peralta, David Peterson, Nolan McLean, Clay Holmes, and Kodai Senga.
#3 The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to find talented players, shortstop 19 year old Konnor Griffin is one of them although he will have to wait according Bucs manager Don Kelly who said the decision to leave Griffin off the opening day roster was extremely difficult. Griffin is the No.1 prospect but will sent down to triple A to start the season.
#4 Charlie wanted to get your take of the announcement that the Sacramento A’s will start Luis Severino opening day against the Toronto Blue Jays on Fri Mar 27th. Severino is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA this spring. In two games Severino has pitched seven innings, surrendered three hits, one run, and struck out ten hitters. How do you like Severino’s chances this upcoming season?
#5 Talk about Rafael Devers a guy that the San Francisco Giants will be depending on for runs, hits and home run. In spring Devers is hitting .172, with five hits, a homerun, and five RBIs. Also talk about him getting some looks at first base this season.

Giant notes: San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman who was in the middle of a on field scuffle with the Colorado Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeman and made contact with Freeman on Sep 2 at Coors Field after Freeman and Devers got into a jawing match over Devers’ admiring his home run that he hit off Freeman.
With the benches emptying Chapman reached out and made contact with Freeman who was issued a one day suspension by MLB which Chapman appealed and won. Chapman rather than serve the one day suspension will be fined for the incident along with Devers who also was fined.

San Francisco Giants legend Will Clark serves as a Special Assistant in the Giants’ front office. In this role, he represents the organization at various events. Clark stated on the No Filter Network that Rafael Devers, who was recently traded from the Boston Red Sox to the San Francisco Giants missed three scheduled workouts for him, which were intended to help Devers acclimate to playing first base.
The voice of the Red Sox initially reported this information, Will Fleming, on the WEEI afternoon radio show, and then later, Clark confirmed Fleming’s story. The Red Sox broadcaster has been critical of Rafael Devers since Devers was traded to the Giants, suggesting a lack of commitment from the recently acquired player and expressing doubt that Devers can ever become a face of the franchise.
While playing in Boston, Rafael Devers was a fan favorite and a talented hitter, but had a complicated reputation in Boston up to the trade to the Giants. In Boston, Devers was criticized for his defense and perceived lack of leadership, creating some tension with the Red Sox front office.
In the opinion of some, that precipitated the trade to San Francisco. Will Clark also revealed that manager Bob Melvin and third base coach Matt Williams asked him to meet with Rafael Devers and work around first base, but Devers failed to show for practice.
While Red Sox manager Alex Cora labeled the stunning trade “not personal,” reports indicate that Devers left Boston with souring relationships within the organization, and in just a few weeks with the Giants, a similar dynamic seems to be unfolding.
This sometimes happens in baseball when a trade of this magnitude occurs, which is why the Red Sox got rid of such a talented player. Well, we might now have the answer. So, around and around it goes, where does this soap opera end? Nobody knows.

#1 San Francisco Giants pitcher Sean Hjelle’s wife Caroline has accused Hjelle of abuse on a 3:00pm Tic Tock post got 3.2 million views. Caroline said Hjelle abandoned her and his two boys saying “on Mother’s Day a week after this once I finally found out about his affairs and stopped putting up with his abuse so I’ve been raising two boys alone.” Hjelle pitched Friday evening after the Tick Toc post and struggled pitching one inning giving up a home run to the Boston Red Sox Ceddanne Rafaela. Hjelle said that he spoke to MLB about the issue on Saturday and had nothing to say further about it.
#2 Giants designated hitter Rafael Devers in his first game against his old team the Red Sox went 0-5 on Friday night. Devers hitless Friday night got close to getting a hit when he hit one to the left field wall and later he hit a ball that could have went for extra bases but was caught by Rafaela. It seemed the Sox were up to shut Devers down. But on Saturday Devers hit a home run for his 16th home run of the season which made a big difference as the Giants just got by the Red Sox 3-2.
#3 Milwaukee Brewers rookie pitcher Jacob Misiorowski has started his big league career like none other. Misiorowski last week has pitched five no hit innings in his big league debut but left after cramping up. In Misiorowski’s second start he took a perfect game into the sixth inning against the Minnesota Twins. Misiorowski has now pitch 11 straight innings of hitless baseball. Misiorowski is the first pitcher to throw ten hitless innings to start a career the overall record for hitless innings is held by Austin Cox for 11.2 innings in 2023.
#4 Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora before Friday’s game against the San Francisco Giants said that it’s nothing personal regarding the trade of Devers to the Giants last week. Cora said it’s “Clear the air? It’s a trade. It’s baseball. It’s a business,” Reports have it that it was a messy divorce between Devers and the Red Sox over his refusal to play first base and not being happy about being in the designated hitter role. Cora said he will say hello to him and that their still friends. Devers said that he didn’t want to talk about the past and that he didn’t have anything to say good or bad about Alex and that he wanted to keep everything in the past.
#5 In spite of the Sacramento Athletics loss on Saturday are coming around after suffering a number of long losing streaks they have put together six wins in their last ten games including a quality start from starter Jeffrey Springs on Friday night that resulted in a 5-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians in Sacramento. The A’s still have a lot of work to do to get out of the cellar as they trail the fourth place Los Angeles Angels by six games.
