#1 The New York Giants offensive tackle Nate Solder has opted out of playing this season because of family concerns he said he had been praying to God and wrestling with the concerns of playing this season and came to the conclusion it was a family decision to opt out.

#2 Three time lineman and Philadelphia right tackle Lane Johnson has tested positive for Coronavirus and will be sidelined on the reserve/Covid-19 list. Johnson said that he will follow the team and NFL protocols and looks forward to coming back after being quarantined.

#3 Tony San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said that despite a 2021 salary cap floor of $175 million which is $40 million less that was anticipated before the Covid-19 epidemic the 49ers feel like they can get a deal done with tight end George Kittle who is expected to make $2.1 million this season which is the last year remaining on his contract.

#4 Tony talk about Los Angeles Charger defensive end Joey Bosa who had agreed to a five year extension with the Chargers at a price tag of $135 million. This season is the last year on Bosa five year rookie contract with the Chargers.

#5 Jamal Adams who is a All Pro safety who was dealt from the New York Jets to the Seattle Seahawks was also sought by the 49ers and Dallas Cowboys. Adams deal was to make $9.86 million in his last year of his contract with the Jets.

There is No Social Distancing in Football

In football the purpose is to move the ball towards the opposition’s end zone ultimately into their end zone to score a touchdown. This is achieved by 1-Running with the ball until you are tacked. 2-Throwing the ball down field to score. And of course, there is a field goal kicker. That is the NFL-type of football we know.

Even when you play “touch football” in a park with friends, we still make contact with each other, that is why we call it “touch football’. Football is antithetical to baseball, where one team on the field is well separated by bases 90 feet apart, and even more of a distance among the three outfielders.

The catcher, the hitter and the umpire are the ones that are closer to each other during most of the game. But, how can you have social distancing in football, when the core of the sport is a brutal confrontation with the purpose of hitting your opponent hard until you beat his brains out.

The NFL is planning to have their season. If it all goes well as the NFL hopes, their season opener will have the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Houston Texans in their season opener Thursday, September 10. To be followed by a complete 17-week season, then playoffs and eventually Super Bowl 55 in Tampa on February 7, 2021. The league also has contingency plans to start the season later, if necessary. Just like in baseball, although for different reasons, in the case of baseball a labor disagreement between owners and players, the NFL seems to be committed to play a full 2020–21 season.

For the NFL their biggest opponent this season is #19, Covid-19 to be exact. Controversy has followed the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell is not a very popular man. Goodell is like “Captain Obvious” he said (quote) “The NFL in 2020 will not look like other years”.

Special helmets. Sports manufacturing Oakley, who already build face shields for the players have send some NFL teams their new helmets equipped with a Mouth Shield they hope will protect players from Covid-19 for their approval. The biggest challenge for the league is probably not on the playing field, but in the traveling, hotels and especially when players have some free time available.

#1 Barbara you had just gone over some of the statistics regarding Covid-19 cases in the NBA and there have been zero cases and it’s got to give the players and employees at the ESPN Walt Disney World Sports Arena a piece of mind.

#2 As for the NFL where there is no planned bubble there have been a reported 72 cases of Covid and talk of cutting pre season to just zero games down from the original four pre season games.

#3 The Oakland A’s played host to the San Francisco Giants at an empty Oakland Coliseum even though it’s a pre season game how much does it mean to Bay Area fans to have the games getting underway as of Monday.

#4 Talk about the regular season games that will be getting started for the Giants as they head to Los Angeles after tonight’s pre season match up against the A’s at Oracle Park.

#5 The A’s host the Los Angles Angels in the first of four games which opens up the regular season on Friday night at Oakland Coliseum. The Angels always loaded with Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout. Trout had doubts that he would play this season where is he on the 2020 regular season right now?

In this unusual year of 2020 for weeks, the news/tease was that the Washington Redskins were about to change their logo/name of Redskins. While that has not happened yet, the biggest news from the Washington franchise was not their logo, but 15 ex-women employees claiming sexual harassment.

The NFL never seems to run out of scandals, a lot of them with absolutely nothing to do with play on the field. All kinds of surveys have shown that the NFL fans are not looking forward to more political demonstrations, but that seems to be inevitable. It would be interesting to see fan reaction and television audiences (if they ever play this year), the jury still out, but the NFL, as I said before seems to be making more news outside the field than on the field; and that is obviously not good. There is one thing for sure for fans, Roger Goodell is the most hated Commissioner in Sports.

MLB: The season is on schedule to begin their shortened version next Thursday July 23, when the Yankees face the Nationals on a nationally televised game on FOX and the Giants at LA Dodgers. The Oakland A’s open the 24th at home against the Los Angeles Angels. Every day players show they are positive for corona virus and earlier this week eleven (11) umpires opted out of the season, for personal reasons. With one week left until the start of the season, MVP Mike Trout has not made a decision if he is going to play or opt out.

But there is nothing normal about this baseball season. Yasiel Puig was to sign with the Braves but it never happened because it was contingent with his testing negative on a Covid-19 test, he tested positive. Yasiel, still a Free Agent. For baseball 2020 is as weird as ever, and I will not be surprised if there is more to come, because surprises now are expected.

All teams will play in empty stadiums. Some teams will pipe crowd noise into the park, traveling is limited to inter-divisional in each league as well against the opposite league. The players and owners through their negotiators ‘struck out’ of a deal to begin the season as scheduled back in March. MLB recently released their schedule for the 2021 season, maybe in a ‘spin’ to make everything look normal. But there is nothing normal about this season.

NBA: Is to reopen on July 30th, after a hiatus on March 11 because of the pandemic. A total of 22 teams returning to play. The league will allow players to wear jerseys with social justice messages, in collaboration with Nike the league apparel sponsor. Not everybody agrees with this. Hall of Fame player Charles Barkley said (quote) “racial injustice issues are turning into a circus.” About the legitimacy of a shortened season, Barkley added” “if everybody is healthy that is fine, but if everybody is sick with the virus and the Sacramento Kings or the New York Knicks win the championship, you know damn right it is tainted”.

The teams will play in Orlando, Florida at Disney World. The Golden State Warriors did not make it this season.

NHL. They plan to return to the ice with 24 teams competing for the Stanley Cup. Beginning with the best of five series, round robin games in two hub cities on August 1. The San José Sharks did not make this season. It seems that among all the four top pro-leagues in the country the NHL has been the most “quiet” during these turbulent times.

MLS: Already began their season.They are scoring goals. The San Jose Earthquakes have not lost a game yet they are 1-0-1 after their latest victory last Wednesday against the Vancouver Whitecaps 4-3. They now face the Chicago Fire in the bubble at Disney World on Sunday.

#1 The PGA Tour is on the verge of hosting an annual golf tournament at Harding Park in San Francisco and it will be hosted by the Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry. The event is scheduled for September 2021 the contract runs five years with Curry as host of the event.

#2 David talk a little about San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle, he can do it all run, run vertically, make defenders huff and puff trying to keep up with him and he was video taped jumping up hitting a 12 foot ceiling in the 49ers training weight room. #1 Barbara, the Washington Redskins name is no more, Washington owner Dan Snyder has agreed to change the name after much pressure. He at one time said he would never change the name of the team but after the demonstrations regarding the murder of George Floyd and racial injustices and the possibility of losing Nike and Fed Ex as sponsors that all changed for Snyder.

#2 Snyder is not doing this because it’s the right thing to do but economically he has no choice but to make that choice and if didn’t change the name after all of that he would suffer economically when his sponsors start to pull out. Is it pretty obvious where Snyder’s heart is in all of this?

#3 How concerned should an athletic collegiate program like St Mary’s be regarding the future of their sports program. The obvious thing with the virus has everyone concerned and most likely they could have an athletic program much like what is happening in the Pac 12 being forced to close it down due to heavy spiking of Covid-19?

#4 Barbara, It’s not going well in MLB not only with the departure of Buster Posey catcher of the San Francisco Giants leaving to take care of his twins, but Chicago White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech has opted out who reportedly was having issues with anxiety and depression.

#5  The Houston Astros pitching staff including pitching coach Brent Strom did not workout with the team over the weekend due to an Astro employee who contracted Covid-19 from someone outside of the organization. At this rate will it be a miracle if MLB could even complete a whole month of baseball?
