San Francisco 49ers podcast with Marko Ukalovic: Would 49ers have been better off just staying in San Francisco?; Troubles with City of Santa Clara

Levi Stadium the site of all operation cost disputes over the last few years between the San Francisco 49ers and the City of Santa Clara. Would the 49ers in hindsight been better off staying and building their own stadium in San Francisco? (file photo from Hochtief)

On 49ers podcast with Marko:

#1 The City of Santa Clara and the San Francisco 49ers continue to their embroil over stadium operation costs. The 49ers offered Santa Clara a $50,000 increase from the $650,000 to $700,000 to the general fund. In all the 49ers want to settle the dispute at a total of $4 million from $3.3 million.

#2 Marko, Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor said a proposal given to city council members by the 49ers ten minutes before a meeting was ridiculous because it did give her or city council members time to contemplate the impacts of the proposal. The conflict was not resolved despite the 49ers latest proposal.

#3 According to 49ers spokesman Rahul Chandhok the 49ers had lengthy discussions on how to settle the dispute with the Santa Clara city attorney over the last three months and that draft proposals were discussed and shared over the last two months and this should not have been a surprise to Gillmor and the city council.

#4 In hindsight considering all the problems with the city the 49ers have had over the operation costs with the city and some fans complaints about sitting in the hot sun on August and September days wouldn’t the team have been better off building the stadium and staying in San Francisco.

#5 Turning to the 49ers on the field the 49ers were shutout on Thursday in Houston 17-0 and 49ers quarterback Trey Lance said that there were mistakes and the team will get better and get ready for opening day on Sep 11th in Chicago.

#6 Marko, how doubtful is the offensive line was it a matter of Lance not getting enough time to throw and had to keep running because of the Houston Texans pass rush?

Texans shutout 49ers 17-0 in final preseason game

Houston Texans quarterback Davis Mills (10) is pressured by San Francisco 49ers defensive end Samson Ebukam (56) during the first half at NRG Stadium in Houston on Thu Aug 25, 2022 (AP News photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

In the final tune-up before the regular season, the Houston Texans defeated the San Francisco 49ers in a 17-0 shutout in the final preseason game on Thursday evening at NRG Stadium.

San Francisco finished the preseason 2-1 while Houston went undefeated at 3-0.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had the opening day starters begin the game on offense. Quarterback Tre Lance played the entire first quarter and the first drive in the second quarter before being pulled in favor of Nate Sudfeld. Running back Jeff Wilson Jr. started at halfback. The first drive stalled at the Texans 36-yard line after Steven Nelson broke up a deep ball to Deebo Samuel.

On the flip side Texans’ head coach had his opening day starters in the lineup as well. Quarterback Davis Mills led an opening drive that went 85 yards on 11 plays that resulted in rookie running back Dameon Pierce one-yard rushing touchdown. Pierce rushed for six carries on 36 yards during the drive. Charles Omenihu’s roughing the passer penalty kept the drive alive after the defense had stopped a third down conversion attempt.

Lance finished with 7 of 11 for 49 yards as the next three drives didn’t amount to much as the Texans defense forced the second year quarterback to check down the ball that resulted in failed third down conversions. San Francisco was also shutdown on a fourth down conversion attempt.

Mills played the entire first half and opened up the second half with a six play 77-yard drive that was capped off with a 16 yard touchdown reception by Chris Moore. Mills finished 6 of 10 for 58 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Sudfeld and Brock Purdy battled for the backup quarterback role as they rotated in on offense in the second half. Neither distanced themselves from one another in winning the backup role. A combination of penalties, turnovers and dropped balls plagued the offense throughout the second half.

Sudfeld finished 5 of 10 for 49 yards with one interception. Purdy was 13 of 20 for 182 yards and one interception.

The lone offensive bright spot for San Francisco was backup tight end Ross Dwelley who had three catches for 42 yards.

The 49ers coaching staff now has some tough decisions to make between now and August 30th when teams have to cut the rosters down to 53 players for the regular season. There’s a crowded room at running back with Trey Sermon being a possible casualty of the talented backfield.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco was 6-for-15 on third down conversions. Houston was 6-for-14.

UP NEXT: San Francisco opens the regular season on the road against the Chicago Bears on Sunday 9/11 at 10:00am at Soldier Field.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: 49ers Gipson most likely to start for Ward; Safety Jackson knocked down twice keeps getting up; more on Garoppolo

Former Cleveland Brown Tashaun Gipson Sr most likely will fill in for safety Jimmie Ward on opening day Sun Sep 11, 2022 due to Ward’s hamstring injury that head coach Kyle Shanahan said was pretty significant (whodatedwho.com file photo)

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 The San Francisco 49ers Jimmie Ward injury is pretty significant according to head coach Kyle Shanahan that the team moved quickly and picked up Tashaun Gipson Sr from the Cleveland Browns. Shanahan said that Ward in danger of missing the opener on Sep 11 in Chicago because of a hamstring injury.

#2 David, how important is it that the 49ers pass rusher Drake Jackson who was knocked down pretty hard by the Minnesota offensive line last Saturday got up and battled some more which had Shanahan saying most players would be done but Jackson is a different kind of player.

On the Raiders podcast with Rich:

#1 The idea of having NFL teams facing each other in practice drills has to be a given that friction will be no doubt. That’s what happened in today’s practice between the visiting New England Patriots and the Las Vegas Raiders in Las Vegas today.

#2 The Patriots no doubt were trying to impress their old offensive coach Josh McDaniels but it just wasn’t working on all cylinders for the Pats. On the 11on 11 scrimmages the Pats had only four positive plays in 18 attempts.

#3 Rich looking back on the Raiders last game against the Miami Dolphins they were down towards the stretch 13-12 but as all good teams do the Raiders came back with a fourth quarter touchdown and pulled off a 15-12 win. It might be pre season but the Raiders are 3-0 going into Friday night’s game against the Patriots.

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Oakland A’s catcher Shea Langliers has been a huge addition in the A’s line up and Sunday afternoon was no exception as Langliers ended the A’s 81 game tripleless drought and slugged three hits.

#2 Langliers triple ended the 81 game tripleless drought fro the A’s a Major League record that last happened back in 1901. Langliers now has two triples this season the other was in triple A baseball.

#3 The A’s open up a three game series Monday night against the Miami Marlins. Starting for the Marlins Edward Cabrera (3-1, 1.78) and for the A’s Adam Oller (2-5, 6.63) a 6:40 first pitch at the Oakland Coliseum.

#4 Amaury turning to the NFL the San Francisco 49ers still haven’t found a taker for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is it because some teams are shying away from his $25 million final year of his contract or teams who have looked into picking up Garoppolo have looked and were staying with what they had at quarterback.

#5 The Las Vegas Raiders according to UFC president Dana White blew an opportunity to get future Hall of Famers Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski before the 2020 season but former head coach Jon Gruden vetoed the deal.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: Getting to the bottom of the real reason why Brady and Gronk were not signed by Raiders

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady leaves the field after playing against the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC playoffs. Brady was seriously interested in joining the 2020 Las Vegas Raiders until former head coach Jon Gruden vetoed any notion of the idea of Brady coming to Vegas. (AP News file photo)

On the Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria:

#1 Tony, Las Vegas Raiders owner Marc Davis said involving a past move to get quarterback Tom Brady and tight end Rob Gronkowski was something he had no knowledge about.

#2 UFC president Dana White tried to bargain the idea but then Raiders head coach Jon Gruden shut down the deal and said it was not happening. Davis said yesterday quote “I don’t know man” regarding any deal for Brady or Gronkowski.

#3 White said that Brady was ready to be quarterback in Las Vegas for the 2020 season but Gruden for no given reason didn’t want either Brady or Gronkowski coming to Vegas. White said that Brady and Gronkowski were ready to sign with the Raiders and maybe the dynamic of the Raiders would have changed.

#4 Brady was eager and ready to play for the former Bay Area team as Brady comes from San Mateo and was excited about the idea and Gronkowski was ready for it too. If you had to speculate do you think jealousy played a part that had Gruden keep them out?

#5 The Raiders host Brady and Gronkowski’s former team the New England Patriots this Friday night and there is talk that the Raiders are about to release running back Kenyan Drake, Drake has 545 yards and three touchdowns in scrimmage and scouting reports say at 28 years old he’s got a lot of football left in him. Drake has a duel skillset in the running and passing game wouldn’t they Raiders need someone with that kind of talent?
