Cousins, Vikings defense upend 49ers in 22-17 win on Monday Night Football

It was a reversal of fortune when it came to preserving the game at the end.

Kirk Cousins had a great game and the Minnesota Vikings defense closed out the game with two defensive takeaways en route to a 22-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football at U.S. Bank Stadium.

San Francisco has lost two games in a row for the first time since Weeks 6 and 7 of last season. Minnesota has won two games in a row and three out of its last four games after starting out the season 0-3.

“We got to find ways to win the grimy games,” 49ers lineback Fred Warner said.

Both teams turned the ball over on their opening possessions. Cousins was intercepted by Charvarius Ward, who wrestled the ball away from wide receiver Jordan Addison at the Minnesota 48 yard-line. Then five plays later, Christian McCaffery fumbled the ball at the 12-yard that was recovered by Dean Lowry.

Minnesota (3-4) cashed in the turnover when Cousins led a 10-play drive that went 89 yards that was finished off with a 20-yard touchdown reception by Addison. It was the rookie wide receiver’s fifth touchdown of the season. Running back Mattison aided the drive with runs of 16 and 13 yards.

San Francisco (5-2) was able to score on its final drive of the first half. Brock Purdy led a 12-play 75-yard drive down the field with McCaffery running the ball in for a three-yard touchdown. McCaffery has scored a touchdown in 16 consecutive games, making him number two in the NFL for consecutive games scoring a touchdown.

The Vikings answered back in just 54 seconds to end the half with its second touchdown. On a third and 16, Cousins threw a 50-50 ball that Addison was able to win the battle this time against Ward as ripped the ball away from him and cruised into the endzone for a 60-yard touchdown reception, his second of the game. Greg Joesph missed the extra point.

San Francisco’s defense held Minnesota to a 22-yard field goal by Joesph after having first and goal at the one-yard after a passing inference penalty by so and so on their first possession of the second half.

Purdy connected with McCaffery on a pass out to the flat and “Run CMC” took it to the house for a 35-yard touchdown reception that completed a quick three play 75-yard drive.

Jake Moody cut the lead to five points when he kicked a 55-yard field goal with 13:21 left in the fourth quarter. Moody had missed a 40-yarder earlier in the first half but made all two of his extra points.

Despite the 49ers defense tightening up in the fourth quarter, after allowing 270 yards offense in the first half to Minnesota, it was the Vikings defense that sealed the deal with two interceptions late in the game.

Camryn Bynum made his first interception of the game when Purdy overthrew a deep ball down the middle where Bynum, playing center field on the play, dove down to come up with the ball.

Minnesota wasn’t able to close out the game on offense as head coach Kevin O’Connell elected to try a 50-yard field goal instead of punting the ball with San Francisco out of timeouts with 1:16 remaining. Joesph’s attempt sailed wide right setting up the 49ers at their own 40-yard line.

However, Purdy, who had a good first half, forced a ball down the middle of the field while throwing off his back foot into the hands of Bynum for his second interception to seal the game for the Vikings with 26 seconds left.

“We got beat. We’ve got take it like a man…We’ve got 5 1/2 days to figure out a way to beat the Bengals and make sure we go into the bye week 6-2 and not 5-3,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said.

Cousins, who was not sacked during the game, finished the game 35 of 45 for 378 yards to go along with his two touchdowns and one interception. Addison led all receivers with seven catches for 123 yards to go along with his two scores. Alexander Mattison chipped in 39 yards on eight carries.

Purdy went 21 of 30 for 272 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. McCaffery, who was a game time decision due to an oblique injury he was dealing with throughout the week, had 45 rushing yards on 15 carries while chipping in three receptions for 51 yards. Tight end George Kittle led the 49ers in receiving with five catches for 78 yards.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 5-for-9 on third down conversions. Minnesota went 8-for-13.

San Francisco fell to 0-36 under Shanahan when trailing by 8+ points in 4th quarter in regular season or playoffs. Niners have lost 37 straight in all in that scenario. Only the Carolina Panthers have a longer streak at 45 straight losses.

UP NEXT: San Francisco hosts the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday 10/29 at 1:25pm at Levi’s Stadium.

Raiders Lack of Offense Is Huge Part of Loss to Chicago Bears 30-12

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Brian Hoyer threw for 129 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sun Oct 22, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Las Vegas Raiders lack of offense was a huge part of the loss they suffered Sunday against the struggling Chicago Bears at Soldier Field in Chicago. The poor offense was overshadowed by the defense which struggled all afternoon. They were unable to stop the rushing game that the Bears brought today. Chicago ran right through the Raider defense which appeared to be helpless against the ground offense of the Bears. The final was 30-12 with the Bears coming out on top

Sunday afternoon the Raiders (3-4) traveled to Soldier Field to take on the Bears (2-5). Both teams have had their struggles and the Raiders are still without quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. He will miss todays’ game but is expected to play next week.

The first half was all Bears. Chicago took the first lead of the game in the early minutes of the first quarter. The Bears D’Onta Foreman rushed for two yards and the touchdown, the first of two rushing scores for Chicago in the first half.

Foreman had his second touchdown of the day in the second quarter; this one a three yard scamper extending their lead to 14-0. The Raiders finally got on the scoreboard in the second quarter, a 40 yard Field Goal but had a lot of work to do in the second half.

The Bears took a 14-3 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Chicago rushing game was averaging five yards per carry and they were tearing the Raider’s defense apart.

Las Vegas got the ball to start the third quarter. The flow of this game was clearly being dictated by the Chicago offense especially their running game. The Raiders could not stop them as the Bears ran roughshod all over the Las Vegas defense in the third quarter.

The Bears D’Onta Foreman had his third touchdown of the game at 4:04, this one a five yard pass from quarterback Tyson Bagent and a Chicago lead 21-3. The Raiders were struggling not only defensively but also offensively in this lopsided affair.

The Raiders Daniel Carlson got their second field goal of the game in the early minutes of the fourth quarter, a 25 Yarder but with the score now 21-6 the Raiders desperately needed touchdowns; field goals would hardly make a dent in the score. The Bears kicked a field goal at 5:46, a 54 yard kick taking a 24-6 lead as they kept pounding the Las Vegas defense.

Things went from bad to worse in the final quarter. The Bears had a pick six in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter taking 30-6 lead. The extra point was blocked. This was the third interception of the day for the Bears defense.

A late touchdown for the Raiders was the only bright spot of the day. At 1:10 Aiden O’Connell (who took the field in place of Brian Hoyer) threw a nine yard pass to Jacoby Meyers for the score. The two point conversion would fail (their second failed 2-point conversion attempt of the day). Hoyer had two interceptions and O’Connell had one. With 3:44 left on the game clock Chicago was simply trying to run the clock out and win their second game of the season. The Bears held on for the 30-12 win. The Raiders dropped to 3-4 and the Bears now have a 2-5 season record.

The Raiders will certainly welcome Garoppolo back on the field next week. This was a game that many thought would be a manageable one for the team. This game went sideways from the get go for the Raiders. Turnovers, lack of offense and the inability to stop the run was a recipe for disaster for Las Vegas.

They were 1 of 8 on third downs and the three turnovers did not help at all. Hoyer was 17 of 32 with a mere 129 yards. O’Connell was 10 of 13 for 75 yards and one touchdown for a total of 196 passing yards for the Raiders. Their rushing numbers were anemic with only 39 total yards.

The win for the Bears was their first win at home since September 25, 2022. This was their longest losing streak in franchise history.

Next week the Raiders will take on the NFC North leaders the Detroit Lions in a very short week when they play on Monday night football. The Lions came into today’s game against the Baltimore Ravens with a 5-1 record and got trounced losing 38-6. So much for winning records. Both of these teams will be looking to get back on track next Monday on the national platform. Las Vegas does not want to play a second game the likes of today’s game. It was a pure embarrassment. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 5:15 PM PT.

Pick six in fourth

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez: Raiders Hoyer struggles as Chicago’s defense Bears down

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Devonte Adams seen here taking in some running practice back on Oct 15, 2023 vs. New England said he hasn’t been getting enough passes thrown to him and on Sun Oct 22, 2023 in Chicago he got 7 receptions for 57 yards in a landslide loss to the Chicago Bears (AP News photo)

On the Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich:

#1 Rich, the Raiders (3-4) struggled with very little offense today in Chicago (2-6) in a 30-12 loss. Talk about how much protection a little protection that Raiders quarterback Brian Hoyer got today?

#2 Hoyer didn’t get too much yardage he was looking for his key receivers Jakobi Meyers and Davonte Adams didn’t get as much as one touchdown pass.

#3 Rich, the same could be said for rushing none of the key running backs Josh Jacobs, Zamir White, or Tre Tucker got much ground. Tell us how successful the Bears were in sticking the Raiders running game?

#4 Raiders starter Jimmy Garoppolo is expected back in the line up for the Raiders next game at Ford Field in Detroit against the Detroit Lions (5-2) on Monday Night Football on Mon Oct 30th. How ready do you see him for Monday the 30th and how important was it for Garoppolo taking this week off.

#5 The Raiders face the Lions on the 30th and the Lions had a tough afternoon against the Baltimore Ravens (5-2). Pretty much the same issues the Raider had today on offense. The Lions quarterback Jared Goff couldn’t get anything going 30-43 for 261 yards and one touchdown but couldn’t get a lot of scoring to get past the Ravens. How do you see this Raiders-Lions match up on MNF?

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: 49ers Williams, McCaffrey and Samuel should be in line up for MNF

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey (center left) feels the wrath of the Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett (left) and safety Grant Delpit (middle right) at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Sun Oct 15, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 Joe the big question is should the 49ers rest Trent Williams, Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel against the Minnesota Vikings this Monday? The 49ers did say Williams, McCaffrey and Samuel are not seriously injured and could play this Monday Night Football, how do you see that being a big risk.

#2 Critics have said that the Vikings who are 2-4 are just one more loss away from stripping the team down and being sellers. Are the Vikings in that much trouble?

#3 Williams, McCaffrey and Samuel are considered to be the 49ers best players and it would make sense if this were a playoff game but against the Vikings all three could use the week and game off.

#4 Joe, with the Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson out of action how much pressure does that put on quarterback Kirk Cousins to do most of the heavy lifting?

#5 Joe, any chance that this game could be as close as last week’s Cleveland Browns game was? Or do you see the 49ers plowing over the Vikings on Monday Night Football?

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: McDaniels says Garoppolo’s  prognosis is better but could miss game in Chicago Sunday

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (10) is hit by the New England Patriots linebacker Jahlani Tavai in first half action at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sun Oct 15, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the LV Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria:

#1 The Las Vegas Raiders (3-3) and head coach Josh McDaniels says he’s received encouraging news that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is getting better from his back injury he got last Sunday against the New England Patriots and had to leave the game.

#2 Garoppolo had to leave the game at half time in an ambulance to get his back checked out. According to McDaniels the back has improved and said that the Raiders will try and do all the right things before they move forward with Garoppolo.

#3 Garoppolo might still have to sit out against the Chicago Bears and he’ll be replaced by back up quarterback Brian Hoyer.

#4 Tony, just wanted to get your impressions of the job Hoyer did in the second half of the game throwing 102 yards and going 6 for 10 in passing.

#5 The Bears (1-5) have been struggling they lost their last game to the Minnesota Vikings 19-13. The Bears used quarterbacks Tyson Bagent and Justin Fields but just couldn’t get by the Vikings. How do you see this match up in Chicago for the Raiders this Sunday at 10:00AM PT?

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel is suffering from a shoulder injury will he get back in the line up for Mon Oct 23, 2023 against the Minnesota Vikings (AP News photo)

On the San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor:

#1 David, in the 49ers last game basically it was a matter of injuries, poor execution and spotty defense.

#2 Talk about how the 49ers injuries of Christian McCaffrey with an Oblique and rib and Deebo Samuel with a shoulder injury, Dre Greenlaw (hamstring), left tackle Trent Williams (low ankle sprain), and safety George Odum (quadriceps), how much did their injuries impact their game against the Cleveland Browns.

#3 Dave, take a look at the 49ers next game in Minnesota do you see them having the same struggles as they did in Cleveland against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football Oct 23?

Raiders Defense Finishes Off Patriots With a Late Game Safety 21-17

Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs (8) tries to gain some ground on New England cornerback CJ Jackson (29) first half action at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sun Oct 15, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Las Vegas Raiders defense stepped up, and stepped up big in the final 1:47 of the fourth quarter. The Raiders were clinging onto a 19-17 lead. The Patriots had the ball but the Raiders defense forced them deep into their own territory. The Raiders defense closed out this game in the end zone with a safety courtesy of Maxx Crosby and Bilal Nichols in a 21-17 win. The Raiders have now won back to back games.

The Las Vegas Raiders (3-3) took on a struggling New England Patriot team (1-5) Sunday afternoon at Allegiant Stadium. Neither team is having a stellar season this year and the Raiders reached .500 are in third place behind second place Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC West with the Chargers still to play on Monday Night Football. The Raiders have lost some close games this season and Sunday’s game against the Patriots was no exception.

Patriots-Raiders post game recap: It was a defensive first quarter with a single score, a Raider field goal at 6:54, for a 3-0 lead going into the second quarter.

The Raiders extended their lead in the second quarter. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo found Jakobi Meyers for 12 yards and the touchdown. The extra point was good and Las Vegas had a 10-0 lead to start the second quarter. The Patriots got on the scoreboard at 8:38 via a 43 yard field goal and they had cut into the Raiders lead 10-3.

As the game went into the half, the Raiders had tacked on a second field goal now leading 13-3. Garoppolo was hurt in the closing minutes of the second quarter after having a very efficient first half of football. He was 14 of 22 for 162 yards and one interception. He was transported to a local hospital with a possible back injury. Back-up quarterback Brian Hoyer replaced Garoppolo under center to start the third quarter. He had not thrown a single pass this season.

New England had won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. The Patriots had a successful opening drive in the third quarter. They had not scored a touchdown in 12 quarters but that all changed when Ezekiel Elliott rushed up the middle for two yards and the Patriots finally had scored a touchdown after quite a drought.

New England now trailed the Raiders by a field goal 13-10. The Raiders Daniel Carlson kicked his third field goal of the day, a 30 yard kick giving Las Vegas a 16-10 lead.

Back-up quarterback Hoyer delivered the Raiders longest pass of the season in the third quarter, a 48-yard strike to Tre Tucker which set up the field goal attempt. The Raiders had been in the red zone twice in the second half; once in the third quarter and as it turned out once in the fourth.

Carlson was having a banner day kicking his fourth field goal, this one a 24 yarder, and the Raiders had a 19-10 lead. Las Vegas needed their defense to protect their lead and hand the Patriots their fifth loss of the season.

The Patriots had a great deal of success in the air in the fourth quarter putting together a great drive that would take, unfortunately for them, 9:30 off the game clock. A quarterback hit by the Raiders’ Maxx Crosby put this game in real jeopardy giving the Patriots a first and goal.

New England scored the touchdown and the Raiders would have to fight for this win leading by the slimmest of margins 19-17 with 3:36 left in the game. Las Vegas could not keep their final drive going and the Patriots had one final chance with 2:23 left on the clock and no timeouts.

A Raider win would be in the hands of their defense as this game went down to the wire. Las Vegas closed out this game in Crosby style stuffing Patriot quarterback Mac Jones in the end zone for the safety and a 21-17 lead and that was the ball game.

So much went down in this game from start to finish. The Raiders had a nice first half unfortunately culminating in the injury of Garoppolo right before half time. The fact that he went to a local hospital right after the injury does not bode well for Las Vegas.

Yes the Raiders won this game but they settled for four field goals while inside the red zone. This does not often win a lot of games. Hoyer had some really nice passes although failed to find the end zone. He did drive the team downfield a couple of times which culminated in two field goals. The Raiders’ defense came up huge in that final Patriots drive with the safety and the 21-17 win.

Next week the Raiders will travel to Chicago to take on another struggling team, the Bears. The Raiders will possibly be playing without Garoppolo and in that event Hoyer will take his place after looking pretty good in the Patriot game. Kick off at Soldier Field is at 10:00AM PT on Sun Oct 22.

Hoyer did not score any touchdowns in today’s game but he also had not thrown a single pass this season. It was a decent game for him and now he has some invaluable time with the team in game day situation. This is yet another game that Las Vegas has the ability to win and they should come into the game with a lot of confidence after today’s win.

49ers suffer first loss of the season in ugly 19-17 display with Browns

by Marko Ukalovic

In a game that was marred with penalties, turnovers, and missed opportunities, the San Francisco 49ers suffered its first regular season defeat in over a season in a 19-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday afternoon at First Energy Stadium

San Francisco played their worst game in the past 16 games as they amassed 12 penalties for 105 yards, two of them which continued the eventual game winning field goal drive by Cleveland.

“We just made too many mistakes,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said.

The 49ers suffered more than its first regular season loss since October 23, 2022, against the Kansas City Chiefs. Star players Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffery did not finish the game as they suffered shoulder and oblique injuries respectively. Also, all-pro tackle Trent Williams played with an injured leg when it was rolled up on in the second half.

The Browns defense made 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy look human as they and the rainy weather made life hell for 2022’s Mr. Irrelevant throughout the ballgame. Purdy threw his first interception of the season that was a direct result of the Browns pass rush. He also had trouble gripping the ball as he fumbled trying to the throw the ball but was able to recover it for a loss.

“As an offense, we played into their hands a bit too much to get the win,” Trent Williams said.

The game start for the 49ers could have not been better. Purdy led a five play 84-yard scoring drive when he connected with McCaffery for a 13-yard touchdown reception to give an early 7-0 lead. Then on Cleveland’s opening possession Fred Warner intercepted quarterback PJ Walker, who was starting for injured Deshaun Watson, and returned it 32 yards to the Browns 26-yard line.

“We definitely didn’t underestimate them, but they played better than us,” Nick Bosa said.

San Francisco wasn’t able to capitalize as rookie kicker Jake Moody missed a 54-yard field goal, in what was a foreshadow for the end of the game.

After a Moody 25-yard field goal, Cleveland marched down the field 83 yards in just five plays that was finished off with a Kareem Hunt direct snap 16-yard rushing touchdown.

The Browns shutout the 49ers in the third quarter while getting two field goals from kicker Dustin Hopkins to gain its first lead of the game 13-10.

The 49ers defense took back control of the game early in the fourth quarter when Deommodore Lenior intercepted Walker and returned the ball 28 yards to the Browns 8-yard line. The ensuing next play Jordan Mason cashed in the turnover with an eight-yard rushing touchdown.

Cleveland kept chipping away as Hopkins kicked two more fields in the fourth quarter. His fourth from 29-yards out with 1:40 left in the game gave the Browns a 19-17 lead.

Purdy then led the 49ers down the field that included a 25-yard reception by wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and a Jauan Jennings nine-yard reception to convert a third down conversion. However, Moody’s 41-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right with :06 left to seal the Niners fate.

Walker finished 18-of-24 for 192 yards with no touchdowns to go along with his two interceptions. Wide receiver Amari Cooper, who was the offensive catalyst for Cleveland with clutch catches in the fourth quarter, led all receivers with four catches for 108 yards. Jerome Ford chipped in 84 yards on 17 carries.

Purdy, who had his worst game of his pro career, went 12-of-27 for just 125 yards with one touchdown and an interception. Aiuyk led the 49ers in receiving with four catches for 76 yards. McCaffery, despite not playing in the fourth quarter, led San Francisco in rushing with 43 yards on 11 carries.

Newly acquired defensive end Randy Gregory had a sack and three tackles in the game.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 3-for-12 on third down conversion. Cleveland went 3-for-13.

San Francisco had its 8th-consecutive regular season game where they have scored on the opening drive of a game, dating back to Week 16 of 2022 [at LV (1/1/23)], which is the team’s longest streak in at least 45 seasons, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

The 49ers has scored 38 points on opening drives this season (5 TDs & 1 FG).

McCaffrey’s 15-consecutive games with a TD tie HOF RB John Riggins and HOF RB O.J. Simpson for the 2nd-most consecutive games (postseason included) with a TD in NFL history.

UP NEXT: San Francisco concludes its two-game road trip with a Monday Night Football matchup with the Minnesota Vikings on 10/23 at 5:20pm at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez: Garoppolo leaves in ambulance; Raiders hang onto beat Patriots 21-17 in Vegas

On the Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich:

#1 It was a close one but the Las Vegas Raiders were able to hold off Bill Bellichick and the New England Patriots at Allegiant Stadium with a four point 21-17 win on Sunday.

#2 Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo left with a back injury after the first half. Garoppolo in the first half went 14-22 for 162 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Did Garoppolo look like he was in any discomfort in that first half?

#3 Brian Hoyer came into relieve for Garoppolo, Hoyer went 6-10 for 102 yards, no touchdowns and on interceptions. The Raiders held up and now have won back to back games. The Raiders defeated the Green Bay Packers in their last game 17-13.

#4 The Raiders have to be happy ending a six game streak in games not scoring more than 20 points getting 21 Sunday against the Patriots. The Raiders are now 3-3 reaching .500.

#5 The Raiders head to Chicago where Hoyer will face his former teammates the Bears at Soldier Field in Chicago. Hoyer played for the Bears in 2016 will be at his former stomp next Sunday for a 10:00 AM kick off.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: Browns Watson to sit out Sunday against 49ers

Cleveland Browns quarterback DeShaun Watson will sit out this Sun Oct 15, 2023 against the San Francisco 49ers in Cleveland for week 6. (AP file photo)

On the 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes:

#1 San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy in his last game threw 17-24 for 252 yards, and four touchdowns there is little doubt that Purdy is on a roll and is one of the keys to why the 49ers are 5-0.

#2 Last game for tight end George Kittle who scored three touchdowns and was the key factor why the 49ers won the game against the Dallas Cowboys.

#3 Christian McCaffrey who had a multi touchdown game against the Arizona Cardinals and against the Cowboys he got one touchdown but the win was more important to McCaffrey.

#4 The 49ers got some great defense against the Cowboys and Dak Prescott and it shows when you hold them to only ten points in a lopsided game.

#5 49ers are in Cleveland on Sunday and the Browns once again will be without quarterback Deshaun Watson who is out with right rotator cuff contusion. Watson could miss multiple games and the Browns won’t play him until he’s pain free.
