Headline Sports podcast with Tony Renteria: The facemask will remain in fashion if the NBA bubble opens up

Camping World Stadium in Orlando is part of the bubble for Major League Soccer for 24 teams and 36 games. Some of the players are questioning the lock down restrictions by the league with players staying in their hotel rooms with the exception of going to work at the stadium (booking.com file photo)

Headline Sports podcast with Tony Renteria:

#1 Tony the NBA and MLS will be in a bubble called Walt Disney World but as exciting as that may sound they won’t be taking in on the amusement park’s rides or entertainment but buttoned down at the Disney Hotels after workouts, practices and games for six weeks.

#2 There is a fear in returning back to the regular season for the MLS who are two games in before the Covid-19 shelter in and the NBA who are trying to finish the last eight regular season games before starting the playoff. That fear is that local workers at the arena and at the hotel do not have the same mandated requirements like the players. The NBA has maintained that the risks of getting sick by arena security, custodians, camera production crews, and others are low.

#3 Bill Hamid of the MLS’ DC United said that being restricted to going from the hotel and the stadium in Orlando would be like being locked up. Hamid said he talked about this from the beginning. The next question how will this plan work keeping players in their hotel rooms and then back out to the stadium?

#4 The Milwaukee Bucks have a real shot at winning the NBA Championship but for the Bucks Kyle Korver he said if the NBA’s black players feel like not playing is the best idea Korver said he’s in full support behind them. Korver added that he cared more about a change in society than a championship.

#5 In the NFL the tune is changing at least for quarterback Colin Kaepernick as Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said that Kaepernick has the style that fits in with the Chargers offensive system and that the Chargers will be a team that will be running.

Headline Sports podcast with Barbara Mason: NBA players having second thoughts about returning

The Los Angeles Lakers Dwight Howard (12) and the Brooklyn Nets Kyrie Irving expressed their concerns about resuming the NBA season while they got opposing views from former Boston Celtic Kendrick Perkins and the Utah Jazz’ Ed Davis (AP photo)

On Headlines podcast with Barbara Mason:

#1 The Los Angeles Lakers Dwight Howard agrees with the Brooklyn Nets Kyrie Irving saying that this is not the right time to return to play basketball when there are so many important issues going in society. Howard didn’t say basketball would be a distraction for the players but it would not be appropriate to return to play with a serious issues at hand.

#2 One former NBA player Kendrick Perkins who played with the Boston Celtics and also was a teammate of Irving’s said he disagrees with Irving naming a number of stars that want to return to play like LeBron, Chris Paul, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Anthony Davis to name a few. Perkins says Irving is lashing out and making a lot of noise and “Everytime I think of the guy I want to throw up”

#3 The other point being made by some of the players is that they will not have contact with anyone fans, friends, agents, business associates, sponsors, or the media no one for at least three months and such seclusion has them thinking twice about playing in the Disney World bubble.

#4 In what would be a huge publicity move on the part of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodall and going against the wishes of President Donald Trump, Goodall is now encouraging a team to sign former NFL and San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick. With the political climate and Goodall saying he was wrong for punishing players who took a knee during the anthem under pressure from the White House Goodall wants to see Kaepernick signed onto an NFL team and soon.

#5 The return of the MLS will be a tournament style World Cup format will have teams playing games divided by East and West conferences, playing 34 games amongst 26 teams. Each team will face each team one game home and one away.

On Headlines with Jerry F:

#1 The MLB Players Association has proposed an 89 game schedule with the players getting paid full prorated salaries. The season would begin on July 11th and the World Series would be completed on October 11th weather permitting.

#2 The owners last proposal called for a 76 game schedule with the players taking another pay cut on top of their prorated salaries. How the owners will see the players latest proposal is yet to be seen but one thing for sure they don’t want to pay anymore than the have to.

#3 In the baseball draft the top ticket is Spencer Torkelson who played for the ASU Sun Devils is the number one overall pick and joins the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers wasted no time selecting Torkelson whose expected to add punch to the Tigers line up for the future.

Headline Sports podcast with London Marq: If he’s really sorry should Brees take a knee himself

Malcom Jenkins safety for the New Orleans Saints sends out a message directly to Saints quarterback Drew Brees about how he got the message wrong about taking a knee. Brees spent Thursday trying to do damage control with apologies all around. (photo from espn.com)

On Headline Sports podcast with London:

#1 When football returns should the New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees to demonstrate his sincere apologetic feelings about his saying the players are disrespecting the flag by taking knee should Brees take a knee himself?

#2 Brees has been heavily involved in the black community in New Orleans but said on Thursday that he needed to do more listening and less talking.

#3 Other NFL players are voicing their opinion about Brees saying taking a knee is disrespectful to the flag that it’s disrespectful to the US military might. In response the San Francisco 49ers’ Jerick McKinnion tweeted a middle finger amoji.

#4 Brees certainly didn’t expect the firestorm of criticism for his tweet saying his teammates and NFL players are disrepectful for taking a knee and that it’s an insult to the flag and the US military. Richard Sherman of the 49ers says that Brees has lost creditbiltiy and that Brees interjecting the military into the conversation is part of the problem.

#5 What’s the next step for Drew Brees now will he be able to be a team leader at quarterback for the Saints and help the Saints drive towards the post season? Or will he be pretty much persona non grata and the players will request not to play with him in anymore in NFL games?

Headline Sports podcast with Barbara Mason: Will Cuomo’s idea of re-opening sports be huge risk?; Is Ryan Leaf really through this time?

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo meets with the media during his daily briefings regarding Coronavirus and said he will allow the opening of sports training camps for college and pro teams (AP photo)

Headline Sports with Barbara:

#1 Barbara college and pro sports teams are working on ways to get their seasons started but in a recent news report just trying to sit down in a restaurant now will require curtains and gloves with goggles so how are contact sports teams going to function in those conditions?

#2 New York governor Andrew Cuomo has given the green light for all New York’s sports teams to open training camps. Considering the recent contracting of Coronavirus of Georgetown head coach Patrick Ewing and two hairdressers passed Covid-19 to 140 customers in Missouri how is it possible to open up contact sports taking that into account?

#3 Former San Diego Chargers quarterback Ryan Leaf looked as if his life had turned around, he was making speaking engagements about the dangers of alcohol and talked about his experiences of abuse which lead to his downfall. He was making such inroads until this week’s domestic battery charge. Is Ryan Leaf through, done, finished with this latest accusation?

#4 We just talked about the hairdressers who passed on Coronavirus onto over 140 of their customers who tested positive and Patrick Ewing a head coach who was exposed to the virus. Now the NFL said this past weekend that they want to open the season with fans in the stands like in capacity crowds how would this be possible? This is according to Troy Vincent EVP of NFL operations.

#5 Former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco has signed a one year deal with the New York Jets. Flacco 35 was dealt to the Denver Broncos in the off season last year from the Ravens and threw for 65.3 percent completions and six touchdowns. Does he have enough left in the tank to be a factor in New York?

#4 Brady as the series will point out was an overlooked six round draft pick but when he came to the Patriots everything jelled for him and he rode a championship winner.

#5 Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis says the Rooney Rule is equated to the Jim Crow laws. The NFL is constituting a policy that teams who hire minority head coaches would get better draft spots. Lewis said it’s offensive and it’s like having Jim Crow laws.

Loaded with primetime games, SF 49ers face tough road in 2020

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo prepares to throw in Super Bowl LIV as Garoppolo will lead the 49ers in the 2020 season that is if the NFL gets the nod to open up the season. (si.com file photo)

While its still unknown if the sports landscape will return amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the NFL continues to operate as normal, officially releasing its 2020 regular-season schedule for all 32 teams Thursday.

Time to mark your calendars 49ers fans. (Hopefully).

See full schedule here: https://www.49ers.com/schedule/

After losing in heartbreaking fashion to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV in Miami back in February after holding a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, the San Francisco 49ers’ road back to the Super Bowl will be a daunting one.

San Francisco will tussle with both the NFC and AFC East squads on top of their NFC West opponents in 2020.

The reigning NFC Champions will have six games against 2019 playoff teams, including the Seattle Seahawks (twice), New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, Philadelphia Eagles, and New England Patriots. San Francisco has the fourth-toughest schedule in 2020, with their upcoming opponents were a collective 134-120-2 (.527 winning percentage) in 2019.

Expectations are sky-high for San Francisco heading into the season after a 13-win campaign last year.

All eyes will be glued on 49ers starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in 2020 to see if he can follow up an impressive 2019 season. In his first full year as a starter, Garoppolo shined as the top signal-caller for San Francisco, throwing for 3,978 yards with 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

With rumors swirling that general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan were contemplating signing Tom Brady, San Francisco decided that they’re all in with the 28-year-old Garoppolo for the long haul.

For the first time since 2017, the 49ers will open up the season at Levi’s®Stadium with the Arizona Cardinals rolling into town. In the opener, San Francisco will get an up close and personal look at the Cardinals’ biggest offseason acquisition in wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Arizona acquired the dynamic playmaker from the Houston Texans, in exchange for running back David Johnson with each team picking up multiple draft picks too.

This year marks the first time since 2016 that the 49ers will kickoff the season against a divisional opponent.

San Francisco will be prominently featured in primetime, playing four of the five games at Levi’s®Stadium:

  • Week 4 against Philadelphia Eagles (Sunday Night Football)
    • The 49ers last faced the Eagles in 2017, in which San Francisco were throttled 33-10 in Philadelphia.
  • Week 6 against Los Angeles Rams (Sunday Night Football)
    • San Francisco and Rams meet for the second-straight year on Sunday Night Football. The 49ers won both meetings last year, including their last-minute victory in Week 16 that saw San Francisco convert back-to-back 3rd-and-16 completions from Garoppolo to engineer the win.
  • Week 9 against Green Bay Packers (Thursday Night Football)
    • Green Bay will make their third-straight trip to Levi’s®Stadium within a calendar year. The Packers and 49ers met twice last year, in Week 12, and again in the NFC Championship game, with the 49ers winning 37-20 and locking up their first Super Bowl appearance since 2013.
  • Week 13 against Buffalo Bills (Monday Night Football)
    • The Buffalo Bills, who have high expectations of their own heading into the 2020 season, will make their first-ever trip to Levi’s®Stadium. The Bills made a splash in the offseason, trading a bevy of picks to the Minnesota Vikings for electric wide receiver Stefon Diggs to help third-year quarterback Josh Allen’s development as a passer.
  • Week 15 at Dallas Cowboys (Sunday Night Football)
    • Talk about two organizations that aren’t strangers to one another. Both organizations have won five Super Bowls and feel that this is the year that they both can win their sixth. With this matchup late in the year, this could be a potential playoff preview or at the least, a playoff spot will be up for grabs.

San Francisco has three separate stands of back-to-back road matchups, starting with Weeks 2 and 3.

The 49ers are set to face the New York Jets then New York Giants at Met Life Stadium in consecutive weeks, marking just the second time in team history that San Francisco is taking on the Jets and Giants in consecutive weeks (Weeks 13-14 of 1986) and the first time doing so on the road in back-to-back weeks.

Last year, the 49ers stayed on the east coast in between road games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Week 1) and the Cincinnati Bengals (Week 2), and the Baltimore Ravens (Week 13), and the New Orleans Saints (Week 14).

In Week 7, San Francisco will head to the Northeast to take on the New England Patriots in Jimmy Garoppolo’s return to Foxborough. The following week, San Francisco will travel to the Pacific Northwest for their first matchup against NFC West rival, the Seattle Seahawks.

Unlike last season’s Week 4, this year the 49ers’ bye comes in Week 11, which could be vital for San Francisco who could be fighting for playoff positioning. This marks the third time in four seasons that San Francisco have had their Bye in Week 11.

Following the Bye, the 49ers will evenly split their final six contests between home and road trips and a final meeting against each of their division rivals.

For the second-straight year, the 49ers and Seahawks face each other in the season finale. Week 17 could prove to have playoff implications again, similar to 2019 where the 49ers clinched the NFC West in Seattle thanks to then-rookie linebacker Dre Greenlaw’s goal line stop on Seahawks tight end Jacob Hollister that perserved a 26-21 victory.

The 49ers will open and close the regular-season at home for the first time since 2016.

On Headline Sports with Barbara:

#1 The 1991 Detroit Pistons are a sore subject and it was brought up to Michael Jordan in the documentary “Last Dance” Jordan says he still hates I the Pistons, they swept the Pistons in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals in four games and they didn’t shake hands after that series, Jordan says he hates Isiah Thomas and the Pistons to this day.

#3 Barbara talk about the New Orleans Saints quarterback Taysom Hill, he thrown no passes but yet he signed a deal with the Saints for $21 million a two year deal with $16 million in guaranteed money. Hill was the Saints third string quarterback behind Drew Brees and Teddy Bridgewater last season.

#4 Lots of down time for MLB and for Oakland A’s broadcaster Ray Fosse it’s no different. Fosse said on Monday the A’s should be having day off in Cleveland as he was interviewed on NBC Sports. For many broadcasters and MLB personnel it’s been a long lay off and it’s a question as to whether baseball will return this year or not?

#5 San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler made it clear to quell all the talk about Yasiel Puig coming to San Francisco that Puig will not be joining the team. Kapler said that the very fact that the story was not covered about Puig coming to San Francisco says it all. There just a few reports talking about Puig coming to the Giants.
