With the regulation season approaching the final lap, team’s are fighting for that eighth spot. The eighth spot is a very real possibility for a few teams but the Sacramento Kings and the New Orleans Pelicans are probably not one of them. The Kings were defeated in New Orleans for their seventh straight loss 117-110 to the Pelicans on Monday night.

The Pelicans have made a bit of a move and are now in 11th place, three games behind the eighth place Grizzlies. With roughly have 19 games left in the regular season; now is the time to make a move for both of these teams. The Kings are 22-31 and in 12th place; a full five games behind the Grizzles. A win tonight is exactly what the Kings are gearing up for. They have lost six games in a row and desperately need a win.

The Kings started off the game on a slow note. The Pelicans led after one quarter 31-19. The second quarter did not go well for the Kings either. They trailed going into the locker room at the half 68-45. Sacramento had a lot of ground to make up in the second half. The Kings were having trouble stopping the Pelican offense. This is not surprising since the team has suffered with poor defense all season.

The Kings would need starters Richaun Holmes, Harrison Barnes, and Tyrese Haliburton to really step up in the second half. The Kings made up a lot of ground in the third quarter. They trailed 86-74 cutting their half time deficit in half. De’Aaron Fox was having a great game with 31 points through three quarters.

The Kings would pull to within four points of New Orleans but just plain ran out of clock. The slow start in this game came back to bite them in the rear resulting in the disappointing loss.

De’Aaron Fox had the high score of the game with 43 points for the Kings. Harrison Barnes finished with 16 points and Maurice Harkless had 15. The Pelicans Brandon Ingram had 34 points and Zion Williamson had 30. This loss is the seventh in a row for Sacramento.

On Wednesday evening the Kings will take on the Wizards. Tip off is at 7:00 PM.

The Sacramento Kings were set to play the final game of their road trip. However, before we talk about the Kings latest contest let’s talk about how they fared last.

The Kings lost their most recent game on Saturday night. The Kings took on the Miami heat in Miami but weren’t able to secure the win. Neither team scored a lot of points in the contest and it proved costly for the Kings. So, the Kings set their sights on the New Orleans Pelicans to finish off the road trip at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.

The Pelicans came into Monday nights game with a record of 7-11. The Kings had a record slightly better at 8-11. The game was set to be a contest of two teams rally searching for their identities. Neither team has really been able to gauge what they are the rest of the season so far. The contest was set for 5 PM PST in New Orleans. The Kings would hold off the Pelicans for a nine point victory 118-109.

In the first half, the Kings played well but were outplayed by the Pelicans. The Kings were out scored by the Pelicans 33-30 in the first quarter as neither team was playing much defense. In the second quarter, the Kings were outscored again 30-29. The Kings defense was struggling as the Pelicans were on pace for over 120 points. It was going to be imperative for the Kings to limit the Pelicans on the offensive end. The Kings went into halftime trailing 62-60.

In the second half, the Kings didn’t start out very strong. The Kings were out scored 32-27 in the third quarter to further out themselves in a deficit they would need to overcome. Heading into the final quarter, the Kings trailed 94-87. In the final 12 minutes, the Kings played some great basketball.

The Kings managed to score 31 points while holding the Pelicans to 15 points. They erased the seven point deficit and won the game by nine points. De’Aaron Fox continued what seems to be the new normal with him by scoring 38 points in the game. Brandon Ingram led the Pelicans in defeat with 20 points. This was a great win for the Kings coming from behind in the final quarter. The Kings will look to build on this in their next game.

Up Next: The Kings travel home to face the Boston Celtics on Wednesday at 7 PM PST.

De’Aaron Fox made a driving dunk to make it a 1-point game, 116-115, with 3:18 left.

Pelicans-Kings match postponed due to Coronavirus pandemic

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were slated to take on the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night on ESPN. However, the game was scrapped due to Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz testing positive for the virus formally know as COVID-19.

NBA referee Courtney Kirkland was the main reason for the cancellation in Sacramento because she also worked a game with the Jazz earlier this week. Due to her possible exposure the NBA called off the match up out of an abundance of caution.

No one knows when the NBA may resume the season if at all this year. It will greatly depends on how the virus continues to spread throughout the NBA and the communities of its teams.

For the foreseeable future, we will not have NBA action.

Kings lose by a bucket 117-115 to New Orleans

nbcsports.com photo: New Orleans Pelicans vs. Sacramento Kings Sat Jan 4th at Golden One Center

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings finally snapped the losing streak. On Thursday, the Kings managed to beat the Memphis Grizzlies to snap the streak. Saturday night, the task at hand was the New Orleans Pelicans coming off a back to back in Los Angeles. The Kings, fresh off of a day’s rest at home, were looking to make it two in a row at home. The tip-off was set for 7 PM PST.

In the first, the Kings got off to a slow start. The Pelicans got out to a 22-8 lead with 5:18 remaining in the quarter. From there, it was all Kings. The Pelicans only added another three points as the Kings stormed back to take a 26-25 lead at the end of the first. Buddy Hield dropped eight points for the Kings in the quarter while JJ Redick led the way with eight for the Pelicans.

In the second, neither team really went on an extended run. The Kings and Pelicans traded leads and the Pelicans managed to score 27 compared to the Kings 22 in the second quarter. Buddy Hield disappeared in the second and scored no points as Harrison Barnes and De’Aaromn Fox led the way with seven points apiece. J

J Redick finished the half with 16 points and Lonzo Ball was the runner up with seven. The Kings would go into halftime down 48-52 looking to come out with better energy in the second half.

In the third, the Kings would bounce back. The Kings put up 32 points in the third over the Pelicans 24 to take an 80-76 lead into the final quarter. The Kings, who were led by Harrison Barnes and Buddy Hield who finished the third with 21 and 17 points respectively.

The Pelicans were led by Jrue Holiday who had 17 points through the first three-quarters of play. The Kings would look to finish off the Pelicans in the fourth.

In the fourth, the Pelicans started to pull away. They put up good shots in the early minutes and took back the lead from the Kings. The Pelicans had pulled away to a 14 point lead with 4:04 to play. However, the Kings managed to put together good possessions to make it a game late. Aided by Buddy Hield hitting two three-pointers, the Kings were right back in it with the game 112-109 and 31.5 seconds to play.

After a few fouls by the Kings and ensuing free throws, the Kings were down four with 5.6 remaining. Nemanja Bjelica managed to hit a wild and one three-pointer to tie the game. Unfortunately for Kings fans, what happened next was not great. The Kings had a defensive breakdown on the inbound and allowed JJ Redick to get a layup to put the Pelicans up 117-115.

The Kings then just tossed in the inbound without a timeout and time expired. The Kings lost 117-115. Harrison Barnes led the Kings with 30 points as Buddy Hield was right behind him with 24. The Pelicans leading scorer was Lonzo Ball who finished with 24 points. Ultimately the Kings were done in by the 21 turnovers they committed. The Pelicans scored 29 points off of those turnovers which was the difference in the game.

In the locker room the Kings were pretty down. It’s been an upsetting last three weeks for the Kings as they look to get back on track. They hope to do that in Mondays matchup against the Warriors.

Up Next: The Kings stay home to face the Golden State Warriors on Monday evening at 7 PM PST.
