That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: A’s Mason Miller could be traded

Oakland A’s pitcher Mason Miller is seen here throwing to the Seattle Mariners line up in the top of the first inning at the Oakland Coliseum on Tue May 2, 2023 back when he was a starter. Since converting to the closer role in 2024 Miller has seen lots of success in save situations. So much so other big league clubs have express interest in his services including the New York Yankees. A’s Mason Miller could be traded

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

A team in transition like the Oakland A’s (Oakland until September 26) is always building for the future, especially with so many moving parts right now for the Athletics, cities, new stadiums, and lawsuits, referendums. A possible trade this season that involves A’s closer Mason Miller is very likely. It all depends on the situation and where the A’s are in the standings. Or maybe not, considering the unpredictability of the A’s ownership.

The A’s will be asking for a big package of promising players, but I think this will have to wait until at least the middle of the season. Let’s say the A’s continue to improve, and they are fighting for the western division title on July 31. What do you do?

Various teams have reportedly expressed interest in the 25-year-old “lanzallamas.” Two teams expected to be contenders, the Orioles and the Cubs, are probably the types of teams that are one stud short in the ninth inning, a closer away from pulling the trigger.

The A’s might still have Miller and not be contenders, and if that is the case, the probability of a trade increases. This applies to the A’s and the other teams that want to trade for Miller. How are they doing when they also pull the trigger? Is there urgency? The A’s hold all the cards with Miller since he is still under A’s control until 2029, so they can wait. If you are a negotiator, you want to start with an advantage, and the Oakland A’s have it today with Miller.

The lifespan of a young closer throwing high-octane doesn’t last forever. Free of injuries, there have been very few Mariano Riveras out there, the type of pitcher who has owned the ninth inning for years.

Finally, I would not be surprised if the Oakland A’s traded Miller during this 2024 season, and you also should not be. But let’s face it: For a young and very good team like the Baltimore Orioles, that is their focus. A team like the O’s might need that one piece, a “lights out” closer, to win the World Series this year. But the Orioles should not be over-excited. The Baltimore Orioles have not won a World Series since 1983 (41 years), and they are today one of the elite teams in the game.

Is it Miller time?

After 869 consecutive games without an ejection New York Yankees Aaron Judge (99) was ejected by home plate umpire Ryan Blakney (center) and manager Aaron Boone trying to keep them separated in the bottom of the seventh inning against the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium on Sat May 4, 2024 (AP News photo)

Headline Sports podcast with Charlie O:

#1 Talk is the Gunnar Henderson is one of the big reasons why the Baltimore Orioles are a half game ahead just ahead of second place New York Yankees. Henderson hitting .279, 25 runs, 24 RBIs and ten home runs.

#2 Charlie, New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge was ejected for verbalizing his displeasure on being called out on a strike call by home plate umpire Ryan Blakney which Aaron disapproved of saying the pitch was outside and got tossed out for the first time in his career. What was surprising about it it was the first ejection for Judge in 869 games. Judge said he’s said worse things when he struck out so he was surprised when he got the heave ho.

#3 For the first time since March Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole threw off the mound as Cole shoots to get back on the hill. Cole had been suffering from a elbow injury. Cole came in hours before the Detroit Tigers and Yankees match at Yankee Stadium on Saturday at 10:40 AM. Cole said ” It was exciting, this was a good day for me. I was fired up.”

#4 The Giants lost four of their last five games they faced the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. The Phillies scored five runs in the first inning and four runs in the second and beat up on Giants pitching for a 14-3 laugher. Plus Giants catcher Patrick Bailey is on the 7 day IL after taking a ball off the mask on Friday. Giants back up catcher Tom Murphy has taken Bailey’s place.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Sox poor attendance, threatening to move and poor record; Giants Snell heads to 15 day IL with adductor strain; plus more news

Guarantee Rate Field on the South Side of Chicago home of the White Sox. The White Sox have not drawn well all season and have the worst record in baseball so far in 2024. (AP File photo)

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Amaury, lots of talk about the Chicago White Sox problems all around, lack of attendance, team doesn’t have enough hitters and pitching to win games, Sox have won only three games this season, they have won only one road game out 12 so far this season, and are in dead last place in the AL Central.

#2 Amaury, San Francisco Giants pitcher Blake Snell is out with a left strained adductor and on the 15 day IL. Snell was a scratch on Wednesday’s day game at Oracle Park and was replaced by starter Ryan Walker in a bullpen game. Snell has been rocked in his last two starts Apr 14th vs. Tampa Bay giving up six hits and seven runs and Apr 19 against the Arizona Diamondbacks giving up nine hits and five runs.

#2 After getting swept in Cleveland in three games the Oakland A’s came to New York and won the first game of the three game series at Yankee Stadium on Monday on a Zack Gelof ninth inning two run homer. There are just some games that the A’s pull a rabbit out of the hat.

#3 It’s not often you get to see the A’s throw a shutout on the road but A’s starter JP Sears pitched six inning of shut out ball giving up three hits and striking out seven batters. A’s relievers Lucas Erceg and closer Mason Miller also kept the shutout in tact.

#4 Amaury if you had to point to one thing where the A’s improved a little this season and have had some success over the last few weeks what one thing would it be, JP Sears pitching, Zack Gelof’s hitting or the return Esteury Ruiz?

#5 Amaury, the San Francisco Giants are fourth in the NL West with the Dodgers, Padres, and Diamondbacks in front of them in the standings that said the Giants are only two games out of first place.
