Illegal Gambling Bust Rocks NBA World

An FBI probe into mafia-linked gambling and sports rigging schemes led to the arrests of Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, as well as former NBA player Damon Jones.

According to the NBA, the current players have been placed on leave. An arrest and investigation like this takes months to put together; stuff like this doesn’t happen and come out in a few days.

It would be interesting to see what further revelations from all parties, including players, attorneys, and NBA representatives, emerge in the near future.

Among the many sources reporting early on this story, originally reported by the FBI, which is conducting the investigation, is NBC Sports, which reported that the betting scandal could involve NBA megastar LeBron James. The FBI secured more than 30 indictments tied to alleged illegal gambling scandals, including three former and current prominent NBA figures.

This is not good for the NBA, which just began its 2025-26 season on October 21, as NBC and Peacock televised a doubleheader broadcast featuring the Houston Rockets and the Oklahoma Thunder, followed by the Golden State Warriors at the Los Angeles Lakers.

More news on this should be coming soon.

Headline Sports podcast with Jessica Kwong: Wendelstedt won’t be disciplined; A’s having slight uptick improvement so far this season

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone was tossed out in the first inning after a fan behind the Yankees dugout shouted something to plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt at Yankees Stadium in New York on Mon Apr 22, 2024 (AP News photo)

On Headline Sports with Jessica Kwong:

#1 Jessica, on New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone’s ejection on Monday. Boone had just come out of the dugout to question plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt about a ball that hit Oakland A’s hitter Esteury Ruiz’s foot and on a swing. Once back in the dugout Wendelstedt had warned Boone about saying anything further when a fan said something and Wendelsted threw out Boone who said nothing.

#2 The A’s who were the worst team in baseball last season has improved slightly. They won two straight series which didn’t happen much last season. They did get swept by the Cleveland Guardians who are the hottest team in baseball. But the A’s surprised everybody with a 2-0 shutout win over the Yankees on Monday, they maintain third place and are three games back in the AL West.

#3 The Chicago White Sox said before the season that they would be an improved team and they would compete but they have lost nine of their last ten games and are dead last in the American League Central winning on three games so far this season against 19 loses. The Sox have an atrocious road record winning only one game against 12 loses.

#4 Turning to the NBA, Los Angeles Lakers LeBron James had lots to say about the officiating after last Monday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves in a game 2 loss 101-99. LeBron was called for having his foot on the three point line and got only two points losing the three points in a close game. He also was called out of bounds in a game against the Golden State Warriors. LeBron questioned why the NBA has a replay center for when calls are going to stand like those ones?

#5 Jessica, the subject was raised about the Golden State Warriors possibly trading Stephen Curry. The Warriors who lost a play in game against the Sacramento Kings to be eliminated from post season. Curry scored only 22 points and teammate Klay Thompson had 0 points. The Warriors might even consider trading Draymond Green. It looks like Golden State is going to break up that old gang and try and get younger.

East Wins 2024 All-Star Game 211-186 In An Unforgettable Evening

NBA West All Star guard Devin Booker (1) representing the Phoenix Suns prepares to throw down against the NBA East All Stars at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis at the 2024 All Star Game on Feb 18, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

This weekend, the basketball world gathered in Indianapolis to enjoy the 73rd NBA All-Star game at the home of the Indiana Pacers the Gainbridge Fieldhouse. This yearly event had even more to offer fans as we all witnessed the first-ever NBA vs WNBA 3-point challenge which featured Golden State Warrior’s Stephen Curry and the New York Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu.

This was a landmark event that went miles for not only the young boys but the young girls watching. What a great moment for all of them driving home the fact that boys and girls can live out their dreams. Nothing is impossible.

Curry barely edged Ionescu in this wild event winning with a vintage performance. He caught fire just in the nick of time winning the challenge 29-26. Had Ionescu not slowed down at the end of her round it could have been an entirely different outcome.

This was a powerful and fun event that is sure to continue for years to come. State Farm made a donation for each shot drained to the NBA Foundation to support economic empowerment in the Black community. This was just one of the many highlights at this year’s All-Star event.

It was then on to the major event. This of course was a who’s-who from the 2024 rosters but we saw some superstars in the booth as well from Draymond Green to Candace Parker.

It was an incredible star-studded event from the players to the celebrities in attendance to the artists who performed the National Anthems of the United States and Canada. Baby Face delivered a beautiful rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner and Charlotte Cardin was flawless performing the Canadian national anthem.

All Star game recap: It was then on to the game as the greatest players in the NBA took the court; the West captained by 20-year all-star Los Angeles Laker LeBron James and the East’s Milwaukee Bucks Giannis Antetokounmpo looking to push the East past the West in this game. This game was especially memorable for Indiana Pacer Tyrese Haliburton playing in his very first All-Star game.

The East took the opening quarter 53-47. Tyrese Haliburton had an impressive quarter being the only player on the floor shooting in double digits with 15 points. He was sure giving home town fans a real show.

The East continued to extend their lead in the second quarter. The West has won the last five of six but it was the East who won last year’s game 184-175 which was played in Salt Lake City. Prior to that game it has been all Lebron and team.

After leading by six points after the first 12 minutes of play, the East took a 104-89 lead into the locker room at the half. They had more than doubled their first quarter lead.

At halftime Damien Lillard had scored the high for both teams with 22 points. Haliburton finished the first half with 18. The West had some work to do in the second half and Curry who finished the first half with 12 points and Kevin Durant also with 12 points were just the ticket to push the West to a win.

One thing that was apparent was the fun that all of these guys were having. While they were competitive with the win and the MVP at stake they were having a great time putting on an amazing show for everyone present.

The first half were two quarters to remember with play that words cannot even begin to describe and it only got better with an amazing halftime show featuring the incomparable award-winning Jennifer Hudson. It was truly a performance not to be missed.

The third quarter saw the East start to pile on more points. After three quarters they were in the driver’s seat 160-136. It also became apparent that Damian Lillard had his focus on the MVP award with some brilliant play and 33 points to his credit through three.

He also had hit nine three’s. He sure seemed to be on a mission looking to add to his hardware after winning the 3-point contest. He was being challenged in the second half of play by Jaylen Brown also with 33 points.

The fourth quarter was a close one with one point separating the two teams. The East had built an almost unreachable lead. The final was 211-186 in favor of the East a record breaking score. To close out the evening the Kobe Bryant MVP award was presented and it went to the amazing Lillard. “It’s an honor playing against the games best,” he said beaming as he accepted the award.

Now it’s back to business for all of these guys as they settle back into the second half of the season leaving fans with memories to last a lifetime.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Sports Illustrated another victim in Sports Journalism

Sports Illustrated cover of former Los Angeles Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani as Sports Illustrated has laid off writers, editors, and supports staff due to budget cuts (Sports Illustrated cover)

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Between video games, cellular telephones, streaming services, podcasts, and the internet and now Artificial Intelligence, it was not surprising that Sports Illustrated’s recent layoffs have shaken the 70-year-old sports magazine and, in a way, the sports publishing world.

The best-selling issue of all time for SI was not a cover of Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Lebron James, or Shohei Ohtani. In 1989, the 25th-anniversary edition of SI featuring Kathy Ireland on the cover was the best-selling ever.

The country has changed since the 1980s and 1990s; heck, it has changed since the 2000s, when Colin Kaepernick took a knee, and all of a sudden, we were talking politics over sports, which is never a good idea because most people who buy SI could care less of your political leanings or affiliation. But in the significantly changing world we are living in, other things are coming that influence journalists, including sports journalism,

Artificial intelligence, also known as AI, has revolutionized many sports, including team practices, competition, and communication. It is still early, but AI is already inside our media, mainly based on audience preferences. AI can put out a quote by a person (voice) impersonating somebody else, which will sound like it is the natural person…but it is not. It will “aid” news, fact-checking and content.

The Sports Illustrated cover that once defined sports does not anymore, according to the oldest daily-publishing newspaper in the United States, the New York Post, which has an editorial that explains why Sports Illustrated’s future comes down to a high-stakes game of chicken between the iconic magazine’s billionaire overlords.

Sports Illustrated gutted most of their staff this past week, and their future is unknown. SI might survive, but they might not.

–My recommendation to SI, for whatever is worth: Why not publish a future cover of Air Force Officer Second LT Madison Marsh, who was the first active-duty service member to win the Miss America competition? The 22-year-old beauty graduated from the Air Force Academy last year with a degree in physics. So it is not sports? But Miss America is still a fierce competition, and after all, what does Sports Illustrated have to lose?
