49ers Take Care of Business Beating Patriots 30-13; Two game skid comes to an end

New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett (7) is running out of day light and attempts to pass under pressure from the San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa bottom and defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos (94) in second half action at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara on Sun Sep 29, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

After a couple of disappointing losses the San Francisco 49ers (2-2) worked their way through the recent injuries they have suffered beating the New England Patriots (1-3) in week four of the season 30-13 at Levi Stadium.

One of the outstanding players in this game continues to be Jordan Mason who in the absence of Christian McCaffrey has done a bang-up job. He finished this game with 123 rushing yards and 37 receiving yards on two catches.

He continues to impress. There is still no timeline for the return of McCaffrey although he is targeting an early November return after receiving some treatment in Germany that went extremely well.

Game recap: There was a lot of action for San Francisco kicker Jake Moody who scored the only six points of the opening quarter. Those two kicks came at the end of the first quarter. With 2:26 left on the clock, Moody kicked a short 22 yard field goal for the early 3-0 lead. Minutes later he kicked his second of the game, a 26 yard field goal and San Francisco took a 6-0 lead into the second quarter.

The 49ers were looking for some touchdowns as the second quarter got underway and they didn’t have to wait long. A minute into the second quarter Fred Warner returned an interception for San Francisco’s first touchdown of the game.

The extra point was good and the 49ers led 13-0 at 14:01. With 3:11 left in the half, the newly returned George Kittle caught a Brock Purdy pass for 12 yards, the touchdown and San Francisco was on a roll.

The Moody kick was good and the 49ers led 20-0. The Bucs would get on the scoreboard as the clock ran out on the first half. New England’s kicker Joey Slye kicked an amazing 63 yard field goal. The score at the half was 20-3 with San Francisco calling the shots in this game.

The Patriots got a far different start in the second half than the first. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett drove his team downfield in the third quarter culminating with a 5 yard pass to Austin Hooper for the touchdown.

The kick was good and this was a 20-10 game and it was hard not to look back at last week’s game where the 49ers gave up a double-digit lead. Not about to go there this week San Francisco’s next possession was textbook perfect.

Brock Purdy connected with Deebo Samuel for 53 yards down to the New England 17. Purdy followed that up with a short pass to Jordan Mason for 13 yards and Mason would finish up the drive with a four yard romp into the end zone for the touchdown.

Mason has been doing a spectacular job in the absence of Christian McCaffrey. San Francisco had taken a 27-10 lead turning this game back around in favor of the 49ers. The Patriots were unable to move the ball on their next possession and San Francisco had taken back control of this game.

We saw some great play from Brock Purdy in the fourth quarter. A ridiculous throw at 13:26 coupled with an unbelievable catch and the Purdy Jennings connection was working in the final quarter of this game, a pass for 45 yards.

San Francisco drove down to the New England 23 yard line but the Patriots intercepted a Purdy pass intended for Brandon Aiyuk on their own two yard line. New England had a little life and some decent time on the clock.

The 49ers defense had made life pretty miserable for Patriot quarterback Jacoby Brissett registering their fifth sack this one at the hands of Nick Bosa. The life that the Patriots felt after the interception was quickly snuffed out thanks to Bosa and the San Francisco defense.

With 4:58 left in the fourth quarter the 49ers extended their lead to 30-13. Jake Moody kicked his third field goal of the game for 41 yards and he had been perfect all day. The final score was 30-13 and San Francisco celebrated a great game, a great win.

The Niner defense stepped up big, and the offense had a banner day. Brock Purdy finished with 288 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Mason had another amazing game with 123 rushing yards on 24 carries. He also had a couple of catches for 37 yards.

When Christian McCaffrey returns to the field San Francisco could have some of the most dangerous weapons on the ground in the league. The San Francisco receiving core was on point. Jauan Jennings had three catches for 88 yards, Deebo Samuel also three catches for 58 yards, Bandon Aiyuk three catches for 48 yards and George Kittle four catches for 45 yards.

San Francisco now has a 2-2 record after a rough patch. They have worked through it and despite still missing a huge offensive weapon in Christian McCaffrey they are now on track. They did have three fumbles today recovering two of them.

That will not work against an elite team but they got away with it today. The defense finished with six sacks, 66 total tackles 40 of them solo; that’s some great defensive work. They handed the Patriots their third loss of the season.

Game notes: Sunday afternoon, the 49ers defeated the New England Patriots at Levi Stadium. After dropping their last two games; last week to the Los Angeles Rams who rallied from a double-digit deficit to win the game 27-24, and the week before that they lost to the Minnesota Vikings 23-17.

The 49ers avoided losing a third game in a row, especially a game that they have no business losing. Yes they have been hampered with injuries but Deebo Samuel and George Kittle are back on the field again for this game.

Next week the 49ers will take on the Arizona Cardinals at Levi Stadium looking for their third win of the season. The Cardinals are struggling with losses to the Bills, the Lions and the Commanders.

Their only win this season was a rout of the Rams in week two 41-10. Cardinal quarterback Kyler Murray has had some disappointing games. Kickoff for this game next Sunday is scheduled for 1:05 PM and can be viewed on FOX TV.

On San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor:

#1 Regarding San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk it’s of matter him saying I want what Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeCee Lamb who the Cowboys signed to a four year $136 million and the contract calls for $100 million in guaranteed money.

#2 Looking at Lamb’s contract might in luck to getting a big pay day like Lamb but will the 49ers be willing to give Aiyuk that kind of a big pay day?

#3 Taking a look at Brock Purdy in that last game against the Las Vegas Raiders has Purdy lost some of that shine that he had or is one pre season game just an aberration of who Purdy really is?

#2 Purdy determined to fill the arrival at the Promiseland, to have his goal at having his eyes on the prize and to win the Lombardi Trophy this year.

#3 NFL insiders are calling 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk chicken and Aiyuk says that the 49ers don’t want him back and Aiyuk wants to play for the Washington Commanders and quarterback Jayden Daniels. Aiyuk has been showing up for practices so he won’t get fined but is not working out with the team. Aiyuk has formerly asked for a trade from the 49ers. How distracting does this get for the 49ers and Aiyuk himself.

On Headline Sports with Charlie O:

#1 Charlie we open with the NFL and we’ll start with the AFC Championship The Kansas City Chiefs vs. the Baltimore Ravens. Two of the top quarterbacks in the NFL are going at it with Pat Mahomes for the Chiefs and LaMar Jackson for the Ravens.

#2 The Detroit Lions and the San Francisco 49ers match up for the NFC Championship. The Lions Jerod Goff the former Cal Bear and Novato resident has led the Lions to this long awaited moment after many years of losing the Lions have been the surprise of the NFC to get here. #3 During Wednesday’s Las Vegas A’s Coming out party at the Fontainebleau Hotel and Casino grand ballroom. The Chamber of Commerce CEO/President Mary Beth Sewald opened with welcoming the A’s to Las Vegas only to a murmuring from the crowd present. There were many business leaders, business people and some local baseball fans who paid $100 a ticket and up to hear what Sewald and A’s owner John Fisher had to say. It would seem they didn’t come away impressed.

#4 The City of Salt Lake City is offering up their hospitality for the A’s to not only play all of their remaining home games until the Las Vegas ballpark is built but in the event that Fisher cannot pay his share of the construction costs in Las Vegas he could move the team to Salt Lake City and the City will work on paying for the entire ballpark with City tax dollars.

#5 We’ve ask a number of staff reporters if Fisher can’t get enough money for the ballpark construct will he have no other choice but to come back to Oakland and work something out with City Hall and he does own half of the Oakland Coliseum property?

Headline Sports podcast with Jessica Kwong: Officials from Lions debacle will not work post season; Panthers owner hit with $300k fine for throwing drink; plus more news

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell expresses his discontent with the officials call about Lions left tackle Taylor Decker not checking in that over turned their two point conversion during the fourth quarter against the Dallas Cowboys on Sat Dec 30, 2023 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington (AP News photo)

On Headline Sports with Jessica Kwong:

#1 Jessica, talking about last Saturday’s fiasco in Dallas in the final two minutes of the game that saw Detroit Lions quarterback Jerod Goff throw for a two point conversion that was reversed due to the Lions left tackle Taylor Decker who caught what would have been the game winner was erased because the officials said he didn’t check in. Decker later said in the post game show that he did check in and the Lions lost by a whisker 20-19 after two more conversion attempts after two more penalties were called against the Cowboys the Lions couldn’t convert.

#2 Jessica, As a result of the controversial penalty calls in the last two minutes of the Detroit-Dallas game. The officials working that game last Saturday have been downgraded by the NFL and will not work any of the post season. Most of Brad Allen’s officiating crew who worked the Lions game will not be working the post season.

#3 Carolina Panthers owner David Pepper was fined $300,000 by the NFL for throwing a drink into the stands after Sunday’s 26-0 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Pepper was seated in his private suite when he made the post game toss at Ever Bank Stadium in Jacksonville. Pepper was seated in a private box in the front row when he tossed the drink on a Jaguars fan. The fan got up on the chair to see who threw the drink.

#4 The NFL distributed a video telling NFL players to make it very clear that they have checked in. This is in response to officials saying that the Lions left tackle Taylor Decker did not check in and was called for a penalty and the Lions missed three two point conversion chances following the non check in call for a one point loss. Also players who wear  50-79 or 90-99 must report that they would be eligible to receive a pass.

#5 After the San Francisco 49ers lost to the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas on Monday Night Football and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw for four interceptions Purdy rebounded on New Years eve with a convincing win over the Washington Commanders 27-10. Purdy threw for 22-28 for 230 yards, two touchdown passes and no interceptions. It was quite the turn around for Purdy.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Augie Mesenburg: Jackson was practically a one man show on Monday night

Quarterback LeMar Jackson (8) did it all for the Baltimore Ravens under center he carried, he threw and ran and it was successful against the San Francisco 49ers on Mon Dec 25, 2023 at Levi Stadium (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with Augie Mesenburg:

#1 Augie, how much was this the battle of the two quarterbacks for the Baltimore Ravens LaMar Jackson he had all the time to throw the football and executed and frankly he could have kept going if the time didn’t run out on the game clock. Jackson threw 23-35, 252 yards, and two touchdowns on Monday Night Football Christmas night.

#2 For the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy a long and tough afternoon. Purdy 18-32, 255 yards, and those four big interceptions. Is this kind of game reflective of Purdy under center or was it just an old fashion beating by the best team in the NFL.

#3 The 49ers are hoping to turn it around in their next game against the Washington Commanders in DC. The Commanders have struggled they’ve lost six straight games and their last win came against the New England Patriots 20-17 back on Nov 5th. Commanders have the home field how do you see this one on New Year’s eve?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Losing out on the Ohtani sweepstakes has Giants and Angels looking for plan B; Are the 49ers unstoppable? plus more news

Shohei Ohtani in simulated photo in Los Angeles Dodgers uniform. San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Angels will take a different direction now that Ohtani is signed. (photo by the Athletic)

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary:

#1 Amaury, How much is the urgency for the San Francisco Giants now that the Los Angeles Dodgers signed Shohei Ohtani someone the Giants seriously thought. Are the Giants in your view in a desperate moment now that they couldn’t sign players like Carlos Carrera, Aaron Judge now Ohtani.

#2 Has the loss of Ohtani not just for the Giants but as well for the Los Angeles Angels who hired Ron Washington as their manager and are still standing by Mike Trout. Will the directions of these two teams change their direction?

#3 Amaury, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has another great afternoon this time against the Seattle Seahawks went 19-27 for 368 yards threw for two touchdowns and one interception for a 28-16 win. It’s now the 49ers fifth straight win.

#4 The Golden State Warriors lost another close game this time against the Oklahoma City Thunder 138-136. What cost Golden State was the 29 turnovers while the Thunder capitalized with 35 points to just edge out the Warriors. The question is are the Warriors feeling their age as they struggle or are they in a slump and just inconsistent right now.

#5 Amaury, on Dec 5th Schools over Stadiums who are opposed to the $380 million going to build a new ball park on the Las Vegas strip and are appealing a judges ruling to put a referendum on the ballot to stop public funding for the A’s ballpark in Vegas. Point out 21 professors in economic finance all with PhDs from Oklahoma Universities oppose public financing for a new basketball arena for the NBA Oklahoma Thunder. They’re point is education should come first in Oklahoma and not using public funds to build a new arena. This is something that Schools over Stadiums are arguing. Schools over Stadiums are considered the last hope to stop the A’s from having the publicly funded ballpark in Vegas.

#2 Recovery time is short for Purdy since the game was on Monday Night and head coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy might get in the line up this Sunday.

#3 Purdy was involved in every snap in last Monday’s game against the Vikings throwing 22 for 37 passes for 282 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

#4 Tell us about this if Purdy does sit and back up quarterback Sam Darnold is starter. Darnold was singed by San Francisco in March, he participated last season in the Carolina Panthers last six games as a starter.

On Headline Sports Jessica Kwong:

#1 After last Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings it was learned that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will be out this Sunday on concussion protocols.

#2 Another fun fact concerning the 49ers is when they are down by five points or more in the fourth quarter they are 0-29 under 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. Was winning the first five games to start the season an aberration?

#3 Turning to baseball and the World Series the Houston Astros were mighty disappointed and the last game 7 in the ALCS turned out to be Astros manager Dusty Baker’s last game of his baseball career. He announced his retirement after the game calling the 162 season plus post season a grind.

#4 There is joy in Mudville today as the San Francisco Giants have signed former San Diego Padres and Oakland A’s manager Bob Melvin. Melvin had caught before as a player for the Giants and managed for the Padres where last season became a toxic working relationship between the Pads GM AJ Preller and Melvin.

#5 Jessica, lastly the Milwaukee Bucks and the Boston Celtics are favorites to win the NBA Championship according to sportsbooks around the country. The Celtics got some key help signing guard Jrue Holiday and the Milwaukee Bucks got Damian Lillard from the Portland Trailblazers. With Lillard now pairing up with power forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.

#2 Bruce, New York Jets head coach Robert Soleh said he wouldn’t be surprised if quarterback Aaron Rogers tries to return next season. Do you see him rehabbing and trying again for 2024.

#3 Bruce the San Francisco 49ers Brock Purdy had himself a great opening day against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In a 30-7 win. Purdy went 19-29, 220 yards, two touchdowns. How do you see him shaping up for this next game in the Southland against the Rams.

#4 Turning to baseball the San Francisco Giants are just 1.5 game out of the NL Wild Card race. They had won four of their last four games and have played a couple of nail biters with the Cleveland Guardians during the current series. Every win counts and every loss hurts their chances.

#5 As a network why does ESPN put all of it’s coverage on the NBA and NFL and almost never a mention of MLB during the regular programs and talk shows?
