Warriors Beat Nets In a Thriller 110-106; No KD to face old teammates

Warriors Beat Nets In a Thriller 110-106

By Barbara Mason

Saturday night on prime TV the Golden State Warriors (37-13) took on the Brooklyn Nets (29-20). The Nets will be shorthanded playing without Kevin Durant and James Harden. The Warriors will continue without the brilliant defense of Draymond Green although the team has really displayed some pretty impressive defense in his absence.

The main threats that the Warriors will face from the Nets will be team leader Patty Mills and Kyrie Irving. Big Red Blake Griffin will be a weapon off the bench for the nets. Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole off the bench have been having a great home-stand and with the leadership of Stephen Curry will give Brooklyn a fight. The Warriors would hold off Brooklyn 110-106 at the Chase Center in San Francisco.

After trailing by six points to start the first quarter the Warriors got going leading after 12 minutes 31-20. The Nets were able to not only tie the game in the second quarter but take a four points lead. Wiggins and Poole were having a great first half and the Warriors were able to take back the lead, ahead by seven after two quarters of basketball 54-47.

Wiggins finished the first half with 17 points and was three of five from downtown. Poole had ten points off the bench with a couple from downtown himself. Mills and Irving each had 11 points in the half.

The Warriors led by as much as 19 points in the third quarter. As the quarter came to an end the Nets went on a 20-4 run and trailed Golden State by a single basket 78-76 and the Warriors had a real fight on their hands. “They need to make better decisions” said Head Coach Steve Kerr in reference to the shots that Curry and Klay Thompson had been taking in this game.

The Nets were not going away and the Warriors needed to contain Irving who had 25 points through three quarters. Mid-way through the fourth quarter the game was all tied up at 93. The Warriors had ten turnovers in the game a few of them in the critical fourth quarter.

This hotly contested game would go down to the wire. With 9.0 left on the clock the Warriors had the lead 107-106 and the ball. Thompson would shoot two free throws to end the Nets hopes for a win.

This was an amazing performance by both teams. Irving had 32 points and Mills with 24 points. This was another loss for Brooklyn in a string of losses. For Golden State it was another impressive last minute win.

The Warriors cooled off mid-way through the fourth quarter but finished it off Warrior-style. Wiggins finished the game with 24 points for the high score. Curry had 19 points heating up in the second half and both Porter and Thompson had 16 points. After struggling through three quarters Curry and Thompson turned it on when it really counted knocking off the Nets.

This finishes off the Warriors home-stand. They will head out on the road to take on the Houston Rockets Monday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM.

Sharks Fall to Panthers 5-4 in OT

Florida Panthers center Sam Bennett (9) puts the game winning puck on net in overtime to beat the San Jose Sharks goaltender James Reimer (47) at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise on Sat Jan 29, 2022 (AP News photo)

By Mary Walsh

The San Jose Sharks fell 5-4 in overtime to the Panthers in Florida on Saturday. Gustav Forsling, Alexander Barkov, Mason Marchment, Jonathan Huberdeau and Sam Bennett scored for the Panthers. Sergei Bbrovsky made 30 saves for the win. Matt Nieto and Tomas Hertl scored for San Jose and Jonathan Dahlen scored two power play goals. James Reimer made 45 saves in the loss.

After the game, Sharks Head Coach talked about the loss to one of the league’s top teams:

“I’m proud of our guys, I thought we battled hard. We had ourselves in position to get two points. You could tell we got tired as the game went on. When we lost Mario it was tough on our D. You know, we made some mistakes, we also had a couple good chances. I mean, Bobrovsky made a great save on Bonino.”

Early in the game, Sharks defensman Mario Ferraro left the game after taking a puck to the face. Boughner had some information about the injury after the game:

“It looked pretty serious to me. I know that he’s getting evaluated by dentists. And they’re trying to figure out what the next step is here so that’ll be really all we have tonight. We’ll know more in the morning but, yeah that’s obviously a big injury if it’s anything long term.”

Rudolfs Balcers also left the ice with an injury but returned before the game ended.

Tomas Hertl scored 6:10 into the first period. After passing the puck to Rudolfs Balcers below the goal line, Hertl made his way to the net. Balcers got the puck back to him so he could tuck it past Bobrovsky by the post.

Jonathan Dahlen made it 2-0 with a power play goal at 17:17. Noah Gregor made a quick back-hand pass around Jonathan Huberdeau to get the puck to Dahlen at the blue line. Dahlen took a quick shot right down the middle through traffic. Assists went to Gregor and Nick Bonino.

Gustav Forsling made it 2-1 at 19:06 of the period. Forsling took the shot from just above the hash marks. The puck went through traffic and past Reimer on the blocker side. Assists went to Sam Reinhart and Mason Marchment.

Matt Nieto scored the only goal in the second period just 1:31 in. Nieto caught up with the puck along the boards and then sent it across the ice to Nick Bonino. The pass missed Bonino but Marc-Edouard Vlasic was there to clean it up and send it back to Bonino. While that was going on, Nieto made his way to the net in time to catch the pass from Bonino for the shot.

Alexander Barkov scored at 1:26 of the third. Jonathan Huberdeau passed the puck to him inside the face-off circle. Barkov leaned around Radim Simek for the shot and scored his 20th of the season. Assists went to Huberdeau and Carter Verhaeghe.

Jonathan Dahlen scored his second of the night at 4:40. This time, he took the shot from the right face-off dot, again through traffic with a nice screen from Jasper Weatherby. Assists went to Brent Burns and Nick Bonino.

At 5:31, the Panthers got the puck in the net but the goal was called back for offside.

Mason Marchment brought Florida within one at 7:30. With the puck trapped behind Reimer and the post, Sam Reinhart poked at it until it came loose and Marchment nudged it in over the line. It was Marchment’s sixth of the season.

Jonathan Huberdeau tied the game at 9:38. From a prime shooting position, Verhaeghe made a pass that went under Brent Burns to reach Huberdeau on the other side of the slot. With all the attention on Verhaeghe, Huberdeau had an open net to shoot at. Assists went to Verhaeghe and Mackenzie Weegar.

Sam Bennett scored the game-winner 1:08 into overtime. Huberdeau held the puck behind the net for quite a while until Bennett was available to receive the pass and take the shot. Assists went to Huberdeau and Forsling.

The Sharks won the face-off battle in two of three periods, and finished with 51% of the wins. Their power play got three shots on goal and scored on both power plays. Their penalty kill allowed four shots and had one shot short-handed. They held their own on the shot clock in the first period, which ended 17-16 Panthers. But, in the second and third periods, they were out-shot 20-10 and 12-8. The Panthers had the only shot in overtime.

Joe Thornton had two shots on goal in 11:41 TOI for the Panthers.

The Sharks next play on Sunday in Carolina against the Hurricanes at 2:00 PM PT.

#1 It’s been a tough road for the Sacramento Kings (18-32) as they face off with the Philadelphia 76ers (29-19) on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The Kings have lost five straight games. I know it’s a tough task but Kings head coach Alvin Gentry can only try and motivate the team to try and get this one Saturday to end the streak?

#2 The two last games for the Kings were barnburners for the Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks. The Kings lost to the Celtics 125-75 on Tuesday and another loss to the Hawks on Wednesday night 121-104 neither were close games.

Cardinal complete season sweep of Trojans 64-61

Stanford Cardinal players can’t contain themselves after defeating the USC Trojans as the Trojans Drew Peterson walks off the floor at Galen Center in Los Angeles on Thu Jan 27, 2022

By Daniel Dullum
Thursday, January 27, 2022

Stanford completed its first season sweep of No. 15-ranked Southern California in seven years on Thursday, as the Cardinal held on for a 64-61 victory in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Galen Center in Los Angeles.

The win also improved the Cardinal’s record against Quad 1 teams to 4-3.

Jaiden Delaire led the Cardinal (12-6 overall, 5-3 Pac-12) with 14 points, followed by Harrison Ingram with 12 and Spencer Jones with 10. James Keefe pulled down six rebounds, and Ingram had five assists.

USC (16-3, 6-3) was led in scoring by Drew Peterson with 14 points, with Boogie Ellis adding 11 points. Peterson and Isaiah Mobley each had seven rebounds, as the Trojans had a 27-26 rebounding edge.

The contest was tied at 50-all nearly midway through the second half. Reese Dixon-Waters sank a 22-foot 3-pointer to give the Trojans a 53-50 lead at 9:53. Brandon Angel’s layup on Stanford’s next possession pulled the Cardinal to within 53-52.

A Cardinal turnover led to a Chevez Goodwin basket at 8:44 that increased USC’s lead to 55-52. Harrison Ingram ended a three-minute Stanford scoring drought with a layup that cut the Cardinal’s deficit to 55-54.

Spencer Jones made a 7-foot jumper to put the Cardinal in front at 56-55 with 5:10 remaining, Two minutes later, James Keefe’s 10-foot jumper put Stanford up 58-55, and Angel followed with a hoop to extend the Cardinal lead to 60-55.

USC made it a three-point game at 1:41 with a jumper, and Peterson drained a 23-foot 3 to tie the game at 60-all with :56.8 to play, Ingram broke the tie with a layup with :33.6 to go, Mobley hit 1 of 2 free throws to pull the Trojans within 62-61 with :14.5 remaining.

Angel made a pair of free throws with :11.7 left to extend Stanford’s lead to 64-61. Mobley missed a long 3-point attempt as time expired.

Stanford shot 43 percent (23 of 54) from the field, including 9 of 21 3-pointers. The Cardinal also made 9 of 11 free throws. The Trojans shot 45 percent overall (22 of 49), also making 9 of 21 from behind the arc. USC was 8 of 10 at the line.

Stanford visits Pauley Pavilion on Saturday, when the Cardinal meet No. 7 UCLA.

Warriors close out game to top Wolves 124-115

Warriors Close Out Game to Top Wolves 124-115

By Barbara Mason

Thursday evening the Warriors (36-13) took on the red-hot Minnesota Timberwolves (24-24) at Chase Center. If the season ended today the Wolves would be the seventh seed and the Warriors the second. The Warriors cooled off the Timberwolves with a 124-115 win.

The first quarter had all the makings of a very competitive game with both teams hitting threes from the get go. Both Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Otto Porter were hitting from outside. The Warriors were seven of 8 from downtown with under three minutes left in the quarter.

Andrew Wiggins joined in the fun going two of two from beyond the arc. While inside shooting was not falling for Golden State, it was raining three’s for the Warriors. Minnesota has forced the most turnovers in the league and Golden State experienced this first hand in this game. After 12 minutes this game was tied at 29.

The second quarter was a wild one. Minnesota was winning from the free throw line but the Warriors were winning from three point range. Minnesota had brought their A game tonight. Ball movement was insane from Golden State in the second quarter, even more so than usual.

The Wolves led at the half 61-57. Minnesota had five fouls but the Warriors had 15 which was troubling. In foul trouble for Golden State was Kevon Looney with four and Porter with three.

Karl-Anthony Towns was on fire for the Timberwolves scoring 23 in the first half and he got the Warriors in foul trouble. Wiggins and Thompson were the only Warriors in double digits. The Warriors would have their work cut out for them in the second half.

They would have to slow Karl Anthony; this would be key in the final quarters of this game. Golden State would need to clog up the paint; this is where Minnesota was hurting the Warriors. Golden State was shooting 48% and the Timberwolves 46% after two quarters.

As the third quarter came to an end the Warriors were really rolling. They contained Anthony clogging up the lane forcing Minnesota to take more three’s that were not falling. Minnesota had 6 from downtown while the Warriors had 16. Golden State stopped fouling taking a 95-81 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Timberwolves cut the Warriors lead in half before Golden State took back control leading by nine points with seven minutes left in the game. This game was going down to the wire with Towns heating back up and giving the Warriors all sorts of trouble.

The splash brothers came to the rescue giving the Warriors a 115-104 lead with four minutes left in the game. Although the Timberwolves made a run in the early fourth quarter Golden State would close out the game 124-115.

Curry was back with a monster game shooting for 29 points. Thompson had another high game since coming back with 23 points. “We know we haven’t been playing our best the past three weeks, but we dug ourselves out of it,” said Curry after the game.

This matchup had all the intensity of a playoff game giving us all a glimpse of what we can expect in the post- season.

Saturday night the Warriors will be playing the Brooklyn Nets at Chase Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 PM.

Reign dominate Barracuda from start to finish in 7-1 win

The Ontario Reign swept a two game series on back to back nights on Thu Jan 27, 2022 for the second night a six goal win over the hosts San Jose Barracuda at SAP Center in San Jose (image by the San Jose Barracuda)

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE — When a team is rolling, there’s nothing you can do about it.

The high-speed bullet train known as the Ontario Reign continued its remarkable season with a 7-1 onslaught over the San Jose Barracuda on Thursday evening at SAP Center.

San Jose has lost five of its past six games. Ontario is 8-0-1-1 in its past 10 games as they swept the two-game series at the Shark Tank.

Ontario (22-6-3-2) drew first blood in the first minute of the first period. T.J. Tynan made a drop pass to Martin Frk along the right wing and Frk fired a wrist shot to the far side past ‘Cuda goalie Alexei Melnichuk for his 19th goal of the season at the 1:05 mark. Frk is tied for first in goal in the AHL.

The Reign didn’t need much time to double its leads. 54 seconds later Sameul Fagemo centered a pass out to Gabriel Vilardi and the Los Angeles Kings former first round draft pick buried a wrist shot top shelf for his ninth goal of the season at the 1:59 mark.

Vilardi has scored a goal in all three games against San Jose this season.

San Jose (14-21-1-0) responded when Evan Weinger won a race to the puck near the goal line. Weinger centered a pass from the behind the end line out to Scott Reedy, who sniped home a wrist shot past Reign goalie Matthew Villalta to the short side for his team leading 18th goal of the season at the 12:26 mark.

The Barracuda had two-on-zero short-handed scoring chance in the opening minute of the second period. Weinger and John Leonard had a chance to even the game, but both of their attempts were stoned away by Villalta.

“We had our opportunities, they had theirs, they finished in the two games here,” said ‘Cuda head coach Roy Sommer. “They outscored us 11-2. We hit a couple of posts but it’s just not enough.”

Ontario regained their two-goal lead past the halfway mark of the second period. Aiden Dudas fired a shot a net that bounced out into the middle off a save by Melnichuk. Austin Wagner cleaned up the rebound for his eighth goal of the season at the 11:05 mark.

The Reign padded their lead early in the third period. Tyler Madden sent a pass to Helge Grans along the right wing. The 19-year-old defenseman rifled home a wrist shot past Melnichuk for his fourth goal of the season at the 3:45 mark.

Ontario scored its fifth goal of the game on the power play at the halfway mark of the period. Tynan set up Vilardi in the slot and Vilardi blasted a one-timer past Melnichuk for his second goal of the game and 10th of the season at the 10:50 mark.

The Reign kept their foot on the gas pedal with a two-goal scoring burst in a 50 second span. Tynan scored his eighth of the season at the 14:14 mark and then Fagemo got in on the scoring party with his 11th of the season at the 15:04 mark.

“In the third it was kind of like man…it was one of those things where they kept shooting and it was going in,” Sommer said.

Villata finished a brilliant performance stopping 39 of the 40 shots he faced. Melnichuk had a night (especially in the third period) he would like to forget as he made 21 saves on 28 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 0-for-5 on the power play. Ontario was 1-for-3.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Vilardi 2) Tynan 3) Fagemo

Veteran Reign forward Brett Sutter played in his 1000th professional hockey game. He recorded an assist on Tynan’s goal.

Ontario is 15-3-2-1 when they score the game’s first goal.

UP NEXT: San Jose and Ontario battled it on Monday 1/31 at 7:00pm at Toyota Arena.

Westwood Wizardry: UCLA still a mystery to Cal, Bruins win 10th straight in series, 81-57

By Morris Phillips

Really good teams don’t have just one method to land themselves in the win column. Whether it’s stifling defense, uncanny shot making or tabbing unlikely contributors, No. 7 UCLA has a full bag. Cal got a second look inside that bag on Thursday at Pauley Pavilion, and apparently they still haven’t digested what all’s in there.

Without leading scorer Johnny Juzang, who was placed in COVID protocols earlier in the day, UCLA was still downright offensive, routing Cal, 81-57, their 10th consecutive win in the series dating back to 2017.

UCLA managed just 60 points in their win on January 8 at Berkeley, but in front of their home crowd and with their kind Pauley rims, they zoomed to 81 points, shooting 53 percent from the floor.

“We have to find some answers,” coach Mark Fox said. “Our defense is absent right now, and we have to find it.”

Jamie Jaquez Jr. led the Bruins (15-2, 7-1) with 15 points, one of five players to score in double figures. Jake Kyman, a 6’7″ reserve took advantage of his increased playing time in Juzang’s absence, scoring in double figures (10 points) for the first time this season.

“We have a really deep team. When guys have opportunities, they step up,” Jaquez said. “Guys like Jake and David (Singleton) really stepped up and helped us get this W.”

The Bears (9-11, 2-7) dropped their sixth straight with a visit to equally formidable USC up next on Saturday. Cal made shots early, and finished the first half shooting 50 percent, but they couldn’t sustain it. Along with 14 turnovers–many on careless passes–the Bears failed to establish any interior scoring with Andre Kelly. That led to tough perimeter shots and just seven free throw attempts.

“We have to be able to make 3-point shots to open up the interior,” Fox conceded.

“We didn’t have eight blocks like the other night, but the 14 steals,” UCLA coach Mick Cronin said. “Embracing trying to disrupt Cal’s offense. Play harder, run harder, talk more, be more physical, rebound harder. Those are the things that separate programs. Winners know why they win. Other teams blame their coaches, their teammates.”

Kelly was limited to four shot attempts and six points. Jordan Shepherd scored nine points, but missed eight shots. Grant Anticevich came off the bench due to his scoring slump. The change of scenery wasn’t much help, the super senior went scoreless in 19 minutes.

On the bright side, Fox liked that his freshman trio of Sam Alajiki, Marsalis Roberson and Obinna Anyanwu got valuable minutes and showed flashes. Don’t expect any of the three to land in the starting lineup anytime soon, although Alajiki started in place of Anticevich. Fox simply won’t tolerate the mental mistakes young players are likely to commit.

“They have length, and a level of athleticism that will really help us, but right now they can’t grow fast enough,” Fox said.
