Keegan Murray to Be Reevaluated in 4–6 Weeks After Left Thumb UCL Tear, Kings Look to Fill Defensive Void

DOWNTOWN SACRAMENTO — The Sacramento Kings will be without their best team defender and arguably their best individual defender to start the 2025-2026 NBA campaign.

Per the team, Keegan Murray left the game on Friday against Portland with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb. Keegan will undergo surgery and will be reevaluated in 4-6 weeks.

Going into his fourth season, Keegan was viewed by many as a real X-factor for the Kings’ success this season. Keegan will be a restricted free agent going into the summer of 2026 and was certainly playing for a large contract during this season if all went according to plan.

It was a tough blow for the Kings, who are trying to implement a defense and effort-first mentality that Keegan’s game fits very well into. Now, the Kings will need to rally together to fill the large defensive void that Keegan leaves behind until his return, most likely in December. However, his exact return date remains unclear and may be longer.

Kings head coach Doug Christie had his initial reactions with the media on Sunday after the news came out.

“It’s tough,” Doug said. “Obviously, it’s the nature of our business though. You just gotta deal with it. I feel sorry for him. All the work that he has put in. He’ll be fine. He will be able to work out and do things but obviously not use his hands. Send him lots of love and get well soon.”

It’s not yet decided how the Kings plan to fill the void. Doug Christie spoke further on how the Kings may replace Keegan’s contributions.

“Yeah, it’s tough. Keegan has size, strength, athleticism, and he shoots 40%. So I think everyone’s looking for that. We have a couple different guys that could maybe equal Keegan, but we don’t have Keegan. Replacing it is definitely difficult, but guys have other strengths… we don’t know. We will have to wait and see.”

Sharks Fall 7-6 to Ducks in OT

The San Jose Sharks fell 7-6 in overtime to the Anaheim Ducks Saturday. Cutter Gauthier, Beckett Sennecke, Alex Killorn, Chris Kreider, and Leo Carlsson scored for Anaheim. Petr Mrazek made 17 saves for the win.

Tyler Toffoli, Ryan Reaves, Mario Ferraro, John Klingberg, Adam Gaudette and Jeff Skinner scored for San Jose. Yaroslav Askarov made 36 saves in the loss. San Jose’s Macklin Celebrini finished the game with three assists.

This was the second overtime loss in a row, the second game that the Sharks lost after holding a lead in the third period. After the game, the Sharks’ Celebrini talked about the team’s difficulty playing with the lead: “We want it so bad that maybe we’re over-thinking, maybe we just kind of panic sometimes. I don’t know, it’s frustrating when you’re that close.”

Sharks Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky said: “We need some poise. We’re chucking pucks around in the defensive zone, on break-outs, out of d-zone structure, just chucking it around. They were all over us.”

The Sharks took the lead early and often. At 3:40, Tyler Toffoli scored the first goal of the game, skating into the zone during a delayed penalty to catch a pass from Will Smith on the blue line. Celebrini got the secondary assist.

Ryan Reaves made it 2-0 at 11:12. Reaves carried the puck into the zone and along the boards. He looked like he was going behind the net but instead he found a gap between the goalie and the post and he put the puck there. Assists went to Adam Gaudette and Nick Leddy.

Cutter Gauthier cut the lead in half less than a minute later. A pass that missed its mark carried on into the zone where Gauthier caught up with it and shot it around Klingberg and past Askarov. Assists went to Mason McTavish amd Radko Gudas.

Beckett Sennecke tied the game on the power play at 15:14. Sennecke caught the rebound off McTavish’s shot and put it in with a wrist shot. An assist also went to Olen Zellweger.

At the end of the first, the shots were 14-7 Anaheim. The Ducks had two power plays and the Sharks had none.

Mario Ferraro broke the tie at 5:41 of the second period. Mrazek kicked out a rebound after a Will Smith shot and Ferraro sent it back in with a wrist shot. Assists went to Smith and Celebrini.

Less than a minute later, Alex Killorn tied it back up with a goal on a breakaway. An assist went to Mikael Granlund.

At 10:34, Klingberg scored a power play goal to make it 4-3. Celebrini and Smith got the assists.

Gaudette scored another power play goal at 17:14 to give the Sharks a two-goal lead. Alexander Wennberg and Dmitri Orlov got the assists.

Chris Kreider scored on the power play to trim the Sharks lead at 19:29. He got his stick on the puck as it drifted in the blue paint behind Askarov. Assists went to Leo Carlsson and Troy Terry.

Jeff Skinner scored at 5:34 of the third period with a spin shot. Assists went to Ty Dellandrea and Orlov.

Gauthier scored his second of the game, tipping McTavish’s shot at 10:29.

Kreider tied the game again in the final minute of regulation. He knocked in a rebound that Askarov could not cover. Assists went to Leo Carlsson and Terry.

Carlsson scored the game winner 48 seconds into overtime. Celebrini lost the puck in Carlsson’s feet, giving Carlsson the opportunity to break away. Granlund got the assist.

The Sharks next play on Tuesday in San Jose at 7:00 PM PT against the visiting Carolina Hurricanes.

SMU overpowers Cardinal with 34-10 ACC football win

Stanford couldn’t overcome the heroics of Southern Methodist’s Chris Johnson Jr. and Kevin Jennings on Saturday, as the Mustangs defeated the Cardinal 34-10 in Atlantic Coast Conference football in Dallas.

Johnson ran for an 87-yard touchdown and also scored on a 42-yard pass from SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings. Justin Medlock added a 96-yard interception for a TD in the Mustangs’ 19th consecutive conference football win.

SMU (4-2 overall, 2-0 ACC) is 10-0 since returning to a power conference last season.

Stanford (2-4 overall, 1-2 ACC) scored 35 seconds before halftime on a CJ Williams 14yard touchdown pass from Ben Gulbranson. It was Williams’ first touchdown as a Cardinal.

In the first quarter, Cardinal defensive back Aaron Morris was taken off the field by ambulance after he tackled Mustangs’ wide receiver Jordan Hudson. Morris, who was immobilized, cleared precautionary tests.

SMU opened the scoring five plays after Morris was injured. Jennings completed a short pass to Derrick McFall, who ran 19 yards for the game’s first touchdown.

Jennings completed 22 of 30 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns.

Gulbranson threw for 278 yards on 22 of 40 passing; he was sacked six times. The pick-6 he surrendered snapped a string of 122 games without an interception. Williams caught seven passes for 109 yards and Sam Roush caught eight passes for 89 yards. Cole Tabb was Stanford’s leading rusher with 62 yards on nine carries.

Jordan Hudson was SMU’s top receiver with five receptions for 87 yards. Johnson finished with 96 rushing yards on six carries.

Next week, the Cardinal host No. 25 Florida State for Reunion Homecoming at Stanford Stadium.

Musty scores first pro goal in wild Barracuda 7-6 Opening Night win over Condors

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Barracuda used a balanced scoring attack with seven different goal scorers to defeat the Bakersfield Condors 7-6 in the team’s season opener on Saturday afternoon at Tech CU Arena.

San Jose opened the season with a win with 2024 NHL first round pick Quentin Musty scoring a goal in his AHL debut.

Bakersfield (0-1-0) drew first blood 39 seconds into the contest. Roby Järventie centered the puck over Viljami Marjala in between the faceoff circles. Marjala found Rem Pitlick with a backdoor pass as Pitlick tapped it home from the near corner past ‘Cuda goalie Jakub Skarek for his first goal of the season.

San Jose (1-0-0) evened the game at the 7:15 mark. A turnover in the neutral zone had Cam Lund find Filip Bystedt at the Condors blueline. Bystedt skated in and wired a wrist shot from the slot top shelf past Matt Tomkins for his first goal of the season.

The Barracuda gained its first lead of the season when Jake Furlong sent a shot from the point that was went off the skate of Jack Ostapchuk for his first goal of the season at the 11:43 mark.

The Condors tied it up with a power play goal just over three minutes later. Max Jones set up notorious ‘Cuda killer Seth Griffith along the slot. The veteran forward beat Skarek with a wrist shot for his first goal of the season at the 14:47 mark.

Bakersfield regained the lead on the next shift 19 seconds later. A giveaway by Pavol Regenda behind his own net let to Pitlick centering a pass over to Riley Stillman who beat Skarek with a one-timer to the right corner for his first goal of the season.

San Jose evened the game with 13 seconds left in the opening frame. Jimmy Huntington centered the puck out in front of the crease to Patrick Giles. Tomkins initially stopped Giles first shot attempt, but Giles cleaned up his own rebound with a shot through the five-hole for his first goal of the season. It was Huntington’s first point in a Barracuda sweater.

San Jose earned its second lead of the game with a 5-on-3 goal early in the second period. Igor Chernyshov centered the puck right into the crease from the left wing over to Quentin Musty who was parked out right in front. Musty tapped home the puck underneath Tomkins for his first professional career goal at the 3:10 mark. Cam Lund picked up the secondary assist.

Luca Cagnoni scored the ‘Cuda’s second power play goal of the period when he blasted a one-timer from the point past Tomkins for his first goal of the season at the 7:16 mark. Lund picked up his third helper of the game and Musty his first.

Huntington doubled the ‘Cuda’s lead with its fourth unanswered goal and third of the middle frame. Giles won a clean faceoff inside the Condor’s zone. Huntington picked up the puck and skated into the middle before riffling a wrist shot past Tomkins for his goal of the season at the 12:16 mark.

Bakersfield gained one back late in the period when Max Jones finished off of a two-on-one odd man rush for the Condors. Josh Samanski sent a cross-ice pass over to Jones who beat Skarek with a one timer to the near post for his first goal of the season at the 16:06 mark.

The Condors made it a one-goal game at the 18:11 mark when Pitlick centered the puck from behind the goal line out to Järventie who beat Skarek with a backhander to the near corner for his first goal of the season.

San Jose made it 7-5 seconds after its fifth power play opportunity ended to start the third period. Mattias Havelid earned his first point in a Barracuda uniform when his shot from the point was initially saved by Tomkins. Ethan Cardwell crashed the crease and cleaned up the rebound for his first goal of the season at the 1:42 mark.

Bakersfield once again made it a one goal game scoring for the second time on a 2-on-1 odd man rush. The difference this time was they were short-handed. Pitlick finished off a cross ice pass from Marjala for his first goal of the season at the 8:25 mark. It was Marjala’s third helper of the game.

Skarek finished with 27 saves on 33 shots to earn his first win of the season. Tomkins made 29 saves on 36 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose went 3-for-8 on the power play. Bakersfield was 1-for-2.

UP NEXT: San Jose travels down to Bakersfield to take on the Condors in their first road game of the season on Saturday October 18 at 7:00pm at Dignity Health Arena.
