The Texas Stars scored four special team goals in the first period as they cruised to a 7-2 route of the San Jose Barracuda on Saturday evening at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.

San Jose’s playoff hopes suffered a big blow as they sit six points behind the Tucson Roadrunners for the seventh and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division with just six games left in the regular season. Texas reclaimed first place in the Central Division as they jumped ahead of the Milwaukee Admirals by one point.

Texas (36-18-9-3-84 points) took advantage of San Jose’s three trips to the sin bin in the opening 20 minutes. Marian Studenic scored his 18th goal of the season with the Stars first power play goal of the game at the 3:16 mark.

Mavrik Bourque scored the Stars second power play goal, his 14th goal of the season at the 10:54 mark, as Will Butcher picked up his second assist of the period. Antonio Stranges was credited with the secondary assist.

Stranges scored Texas’ third consecutive goal on the man advantage just under two minutes later, his fourth goal of the season at the 12:14 mark, as Curtis McKenize picked up the only assist on the play.

San Jose (28-33-1-4-61 points) scored a power play goal of their own late in the opening frame. Martin Kaut set up Tristen Robins who beat Stars goalie Remi Poirier top shelf with a wrist shot for his 17th goal of the season at the 16:29 mark. Robins has scored in a back-to-back games for the ‘Cuda.

Just when things couldn’t get any worse for San Jose, they did as the Stars scored a short-handed goal at the 18:41 mark. Thomas Harley centered a pass right to the crease and Riley Tufte buried a point-blank shot past ‘Cuda goalie Aaron Dell for his 16th goal of the season.

Texas kept their foot on their gas pedal in the middle frame. Harley set up Rhett Gardner who scored his 10th goal of the season at the 9:01 mark. That spelled the end for Dell as ‘Cuda head coach John McCarthy replaced him with Strauss Mann. Dell (14-16-2) gave up five goals on 23 shots in 29 minutes of action.

Ryan Shea scored just over two minutes later with his seventh goal of the season at the 11:03 mark. Studenic and Tanner Kero recorded assists on the goal.

Harley scored the Stars fourth unanswered goal to complete his three-point evening with his 10th goal of the season at the 12:06 mark.

Adam Raska closed out the scoring in the third period with his fourth goal of the season at the 8:41 mark. Will Riedell and Anthony Vincent, who picked up his first point in a ‘Cuda uniform, recorded assists on Raska’s goal.

Poirier (7-4-2) stopped 26 of the 28 shots to earn the victory. Dell made nine saves on 11 shots in mop up duty.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 1-for-5 on the power play. Texas went 3-for-4.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Harley 2) Studenic 3) Stranges.

San Jose split the season series with Texas going 2-2.

Roots Put On A 1-0 Show In Home Opener over New Mexico United

By Troy Ewers

HAYWARD–After moving their home opening game a week later to Hayward, the Oakland Roots had their first match in the east bay this season against New Mexico United. This match was a big match for Oakland, because energy after their last game was up and a postponed game could slow down that momentum, but it seems like the home fans kept that momentum going into this game.

Johnny Rodriguez who’s been making noise the past two weeks, got his second goal of the season from the center of the box off an assist from Dariusz Formella giving the Roots the only score of the game in a 1-0 victory at Pioneer Field in CSU, East Bay.

The Roots started strong, but were unable to score in the first half of the match. Rodriguez’s goal wouldn’t come til the 63rd minute, but that’s because the pace of the game was slowed down from all the penalties New Mexico had. NMU had four yellows and one red card (Penalty on Justin Portillo) through 85 minutes.

Oakland didn’t let up all game and had played a way cleaner game than their previous two matches. Less penalties and a more fluid style of offense was the highlight of this game and we even saw the Roots have a chance to double up their score on multiple occasions in the closing minutes of the game.

Next game for Oakland is still in Hayward at CSU, East Bay on Tuesday, April 4th (7pm) against El Farolito in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup and it feels like the squad and the fans are riding this wave of positive momentum into the month of April, but we can’t forget it’s still a long season ahead.

Gregor Hat Trick Paces Sharks to 7-2 Rout of Coyotes

The San Jose Sharks right winger Danil Gushchin (75) and defenseman Jacob MacDonald (9) are thrilled with the results against the Arizona Coyotes at the Mullet Arena in Tempe AZ on Sat Apr 1, 2023 (@SanJoseSharks photo)

By Matthew Harrington

The San Jose Sharks (22-39-15) seem to have missed the memo on tanking for the best lottery odds, routing the Arizona Coyotes (27-37-13) Saturday night 7-2 from Mullett Arena.

Noah Gregor scored his first career NHL hat trick, Kyle Criscuolo and Danil Gushchin picked up their first NHL goals and Erik Karlsson had four assists to sit five points shy of 100 points on the season with six games to play for the Sharks season (22-39-15). J.J. Moser and Milos Kelemen scored for Arizona (27-37-13)

Gregor opened the scoring 1:30 into the game after Nico Sturm forced a turnover at the Coyotes blue line. Gregor took the puck and scored easily for his 6th goal of the year.

Jacob Peterson stayed hot after joining the Sharks. He scored his first goal of the year on the power play at the 8:38 mark on the power play. He now has four points over his first five games with the Sharks.

Kyle Criscuolo broke through for his first goal of his career at the 13:02 mark when Clayton Keller turned the puck over, leaving Criscuolo alone on a breakaway. Moser pulled the Coyotes within two by scoring on the power play with 2:53 left in the first. Criscuolo had previously played 16 games in the NHL after parts of two seasons.

Gushchin picked up where he left off in the USHL and AHL, sniping a top corner power play goal 1:41 into the second. He was making his NHL debut, lighting the lamp for a 4-1 edge.

Gregor potted goal number two at the eight minute mark of the third. Logan Couture picked up his 27th goal at the 10:10 mark on the power play. Gregor converted the hat trick with 5:13 left to play. Kelemen scored his first career goal for the Coyotes to close the scoring ledge, advantage Sharks 7-2. Kaapo Kähkönen made 29 of a possible 31 saves in net for San Jose.

By virtue of winning their last three contests, the Sharks now sit in 29th place, out of the top spot in the Connor Bedard sweepstakes. They may move further down the standings after two games versus the Avalanche this week.

SAN JOSE- In what was an interesting match to watch the Earthquakes scored two penalties against the Dynamo to win by a final of 2-1.

For San Jose JT Marcinkowski got the start while for Houston Steve Clark was in between the pipes.

The match got off to a quick start for San Jose as they played with strong pace and lead to Teenage Hadebe getting called for a handball in the penalty area.

Cristian Espinoza took the penalty shot and scored at the 7′ mark of the first half striking the bottom left part of the net.

A little later in the first Jonathan Mensa was issued a yellow card on a bad foul and at the 33′ mark Carlos Akapo was given one as well.

At the 40′ mark Michael Baldisimo was issued a foul in the penalty area though it was under questionable circumstances.

Despite that Amine Bassi took the penalty shot and scored hitting the centre of the net tying the game back up. Not

Not long after the penalty Artur for the Houston Dynamo was issued a yellow card.

The end of the half showed how few shots there were as collectively there was only two shots on target between the two teams which were the two penalties.

The Earthquakes did maintain the possession in the first half at 51.3% to Houston’s 48.7%

The second half started out quite opposite to the first as early on Corey Baird got a good shot on goal that Marcinkowski fought off.

In response Espinoza also got a great shot on target that leaked through Clark’s legs but stayed out as he scrambled back and covered it.

Just two minutes after the shot Jamiro Monteiro was issued a yellow card on a bad foul.

San Jose continued the pace and Cade Cowell lead a good charge into the box but lost possession of the ball.

A little after that play the refs looked back and saw that Cowell was fouled in the penalty area and thus San Jose was awarded another penalty.

Espinoza took the penalty and scored once again this time hitting the bottom right part of the net making it 2-1.

Houston later in the half made a couple substitutions including putting out on the field Sebastián Ferreira who last year scored multiple goals against San Jose.

In stoppage time Houston was given one last chance as they were awarded a free kick on a foul by Paul Marie.

The free kick was from a dangerous position but Marcinkowski came up with an easy save as the Earthquakes held on to win 2-1.

The Earthquakes next match will be on 4/8 against New York on the road at 4:30 p.m.

Crawford’s two run blast leads Giants to 7-5 win over Yanks

San Francisco Giants Brandon Crawford went deep connecting for a two run top of the fourth inning home run against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in New York on Sat Apr 1, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Jessica Kwong

NEW YORK.—The San Francisco Giants came back from their blowout loss on Opening Day and beat the New York Yankees 7-5 in game two of the series at Yankee Stadium on Saturday evening.

New York made a strong comeback effort at the bottom of the ninth inning. They had the bases loaded and Giancarlo Stanton at-bat. But Giants relief pitcher Camilo Doval retired Stanton on a double-play grounder, giving the Giants a win and tying the series at 1-1.

Doval gave up Yankees captain Aaron Judge’s 500th career RBI in the ninth. But Doval earned a critical save when Stanton hit a ground ball to shortstop Brandon Crawford. Second baseman Thairo Estrada threw the ball low to first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr, who caught it. The play was under video review, and wound up in favor of the Giants as rain came down after a warm spring day in the Bronx.

“Live and it looked before they paused, he kept it long enough,” Crawford said of Estrada. “LaMonte was definitely on the bag. I wasn’t too worried.”

Crawford lead the Giants by hitting a two run home run in the fourth inning, driving in three runs and stealing a base in the contest.

“It was a good day. My best game of the year so far,” said Crawford with a laugh, as it was only the second game of the 2023 season.

The game has four pitch clock violations, including two by Doval in the ninth and San Francisco’s Taylor Rogers. Giants manager Gabe Kapler said they didn’t have that issue during spring training.

“We saw a good mastery of it,” said Kapler. “This is a different environment and it’s understandable that things sped up a little bit, but no pitcher’s going to survive giving away balls like that. It doesn’t matter how good you are.”

Giants’ Blake Sabol had his first major league hit – a bunt, which he wasn’t expecting. Sabol, who is from Southern California, was at Angel Stadium when star Mike Trout had his first hit, which was also a bunt.

Yankees infielder Anthony Rizzoa at first base told Sabol: “Hey man, they all count the same. Don’t let anybody tell you different.”

Giants starting pitcher Alex Cobb gave up two runs as well as four hits in 3 2/3 innings.

The Giants conclude this three game series with the Yankees Sunday. The Giants will be starting right hander Ross Stripling he’ll be opposed by the Yankees right hander Jhony Brito at Yankees Stadium a 10:35 am PDT first pitch.

New York in their home opener on Thursday beat the Giants 5-0.

A’s Fujinami gets lit up in two plus innings as Halos thrash Oakland 13-1

OAKLAND–This afternoon’s contest between the Angels and the Athletics promised to be an interesting one. It end up being a no contest, with Oakland on the short end of a 13-1 score. The long awaited debut of Shintaro Fujinami turned out to be a dud.

Fujinami is no Shoei Ohtani–who is?– but he is, or at least was , in the same class as the Angels’ star. Four Japanese teams chose him as their first pick in the 2012 amateur draft, a draft that included Ohtani, who pitched a brilliant six innings of two hit shutout ball in Thursday night’s season opener against the A’s, a coda to his MVP performance in the World Baseball Classic and possibly a prelude to an historical season.

Although the 28 year old Fujinami technically is a rookie, he has 10 years’ experience in the Japanese major leagues, all of them with his hometown Harshen Tigers. In that span, he compiled a record of 57-54, 3.41. 154 of his 189 mound appearances was as a start for him. Lifetime, he issued an average of 4.15 free passes every nine innings. He is a strike out pitcher, averaging 9.15 Ks an inning, for a total of 1,001. His virtues were on display for two innings .

Fujinami’s counterpart on the Angels doesn’t have the cosmopolitan cache that Fujinami brings to the game. Patrick Sandoval is a native of Mission Viejo, a suburb of Anaheim, and he still lives in that town. That the Halos’ starter is a lefty puts an additional touch to the contrast. He had an excellent season in 2022, when his ERA of 2.91 gave the line to his won-lost record of 6-9.

He allowed less home runs per innings than any other AL hurler who worked 100 innings or more He has been especially effective against your Oakland A’s, again, in spite of an unprepossessing W-L of 2-3. His ERA, against the green and gold is a meager 1.84, and is 1-1, 0.87 at the crumbling pleasure dome on the Nimitz. He has a particularly nasty and effective change up.

The game began as a pitcher’s duel. The only man to reach base safely in the first two frames was Ramón Laureano, who got to first on a two out error by Rendon in the bottom of the second. The game opened up after that. Luis Rengifo led off the third with a full count walk and advanced to second on Gio Urshela’s single to center.

Number nine hitter Logan O’Hoppe followed up with a double to the base of the right field fence that scored Rengifo and moved Urshela to third. A walk to Trout loaded the bases with Ohtani coming to bat.

He sent a fly to left, near the foul line that fell for what looked like it would be a double, but the Angels played it conservatively, and the bases stayed full as O’Hoppe crossed the plate with their third run of he inning. Rendon then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to make it 4-0. Jake Lamb’s single to center with Ruíz’s error in fielding the hit made it 6-0 with runners on the corners. It also ended Fujinami’s work day.

Adam Oller took over and promptly walked Rengifo, throwing a wild pitch in the process. You don’t want to hear the rest, and I can barely stand writing it. Before the inning was over Taylor Ward had hit a 392 foot home run and the Angels held an 11-0 lead over Oakland

Fujinami’s debut consisted of 2-1/3 innings on the mound, in which he surrendered eight runs, every one of them earned, on five hits and three walks. He struck out four and threw 55 pitches, 33 for strikes. His MLB ERA stands at 30.86.

After his atrocious failure to limit the damage in the third, Oller stayed in the game, giving up a a run in the sixth and another, this one unearned, in the seventh, thanks to an error by Aguilar at first, an infield single, and an RBI single by Ward. That made it 13-1 Jeurys Familia relieved Oller to start the eighth. He set the Halos down in order. Sam Moll pitched a perfect ninth, with the help of some spiffy fielding by Kemp.

It was 13-1 because the A’s finally put a run on the board when Laureano led off the home fifth with his first hit of the year, a 396 foot drive over the left field wall off an 82 mph change of pace that, this time, was as devastating as it had been in the past. Oakland at that point trailed, 11-1

That was the last inning of the day for Sandoval. He had lasted five frames, enough to earn him the win. Laureano’s round tripper was one of the only two hits he allowed, along with a pair of free passes. He struck out two A’s and threw 86 pitches, 56 for strikes. Tucker Davidson replaced him on the mound.

The win went to Sandoval; the loss, to Fujinami. Davidson, because he pitched three innings or more (in this case, four) got the save.

The Angels Anthnoy Rendon who grabbed a fan by the shirt after last Thursday’s game at the Coliseum told reporters that he cannot talk about the incident. Rendon would not confirm or deny what took place.

The rubber gem of the series is slated for 1:07 Sunday afternoon. Oakland’s Ken Waldichuk will face the Angels Tyler Anderson in a battle of southpaws.

The San Jose Barracuda are doing everything possible to keep their slim playoff hopes live.

Derrick Pouliot scored the game winner 48 seconds into overtime to give the ‘Cuda a 2-1 victory over the Texas Stars on Friday evening at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.

Daniel Guschin led a three-on-two rush up the ice with Andrew Agozzino. The ‘Cuda captain centered a pass to a trailing Pouliot who skated in and wired a wrist shot past Stars goalie Scott Wedgewood for his third goal of the season.

San Jose now trails the Tucson Roadrunners by six points for the seventh place and the final playoff spot in the Pacific Division with seven game remaining. Texas, with the loss, fell out of first place in the Central Division as the trail the Milwaukee Admirals by one point with 82 points.

A scary moment happened at the 2:41 mark of the first period when Matej Blumel was checked into the boards by Ozzy Wiesblatt that resulted in Blumel being seriously injured and carried off on a stretcher. He did not return to the game.

San Jose (28-32-1-4-61 points) dominated the shot clock in the opening 20 minutes as the outshot Texas 10-4. However, they were not able to get a puck past Wedgewood.

Texas (35-18-9-3-82 points) escaped the period without giving up a goal despite taking two penalties late in the period.

The Barracuda drew first blood late in the second period with a short-handed goal. Kyle Criscuoolo sent a pass up the ice to Tristen Robins who got between two defenders inside the Stars zone before firing a wrist shot past Wedgewood for his 16th goal of the season at the 15:17 mark.

The Stars scored the equalizer just past the halfway mark of the third period. Former Barracuda forward Scott Reedy won a battle for the puck along the board and centered out front where Ryan Shea beat ‘Cuda goalie Aaron Dell with a wrist shot through traffic for his sixth goal of the season at the 10:33 mark.

Dell finished the night stopping 22 of the 23 shots he faced to earn the victory. Wedgewood made 24 saves on 26 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: Both teams finished 0-for-3 on the power play.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Pouliot 2) Shea 3) Wedgewood

UP NEXT: San Jose and Texas conclude their two-games series on Saturday 4/1 at 5:00pm at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.

Warriors beat back challenge from lowly Spurs 130-115

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors welcomed the San Antonio Spurs to the Chase Center Friday night. The Spurs, coached by Greg Popovich, came to town with a record of 19-57. The Spurs are in rebuild mode, but several players are NBA caliber.

The Spurs’ mission Friday night was to upset the Warriors’ applecart. The young Spurs played with passion. San Antonio’s defense kept making stops on the Warriors. In the first period, the Spurs forced the Warriors into five turnovers in the game’s first five minutes.

The Warriors offense was cold. The Spurs led by nine, 19-10. The Warriors defense allowed the team to tie the game 23-23. The Spurs finished the quarter leading 26-23. The Spurs kept the Warriors at bay for most of the second period. Things changed when Jordan Poole entered the game midway through the period.

The Spurs were leading 44-40 when Poole hit a three. Poole made 12 of the W’s last 14 points in the period to give the Warriors a three-point lead 54-51 at the end of the first half. Poole led the Warriors with 15. Stephen Curry had 14. Poole and Curry each connected on three threes. Klay Thompson was cold. He finished the half with four points. Malakio Branham led the Spurs with 14.

The Warriors played better in the third period. Unfortunately for them, the Spurs outscored the Warriors 37-33. Klay Thompson made four threes to pace the Warrior offense. The Warriors led by eight at one point, but San Antonio found its offense, and they finished the third quarter leading, 88-87.

The Spurs felt they had a chance to get a victory. They had played well for three quarters. The fans were getting nervous. Could San Antonio do it? The Warriors answered the question. The Spurs could not get the win. They fought hard, but the Warriors big guns came to life in the fourth quarter as they overwhelmed the Spurs 43-27 to win the game 130-115.

Game Notes- with the win, the Warriors are 41-37. The Warriors are 32-8 at the Chase Center. Golden State has four games left in the regular season. Three are on the road. The Spurs dropped to 19-58.

The Warriors outscored the Spurs 76-64 in the second half. One of the key players in the fourth quarter was Gary Payton II. Gary played 17 minutes and had seven points, eight rebounds, and one assist. Payton made several defensive plays. He stole the ball twice and was a force on the floor.

Curry led the Warriors with 33 points. Curry made seven threes. Thompson scored 27 points in the second half to finish with 31. Thompson also made seven threes, all in the second half. Poole had 27 points, two boards, and six assists, and he made six threes.

Jonathan Kuminga played well on both ends of the court. Kuminga finished with 17 points and eight rebounds. As a team, the Warriors made 21 threes in 49 tries. The Warriors weakness was turnovers.

They turned the ball over 14 times, leading to 23 points for the Spurs. The Spurs had six players in double figures. Keldon Johnson had 22. Malaki Branham 19. Gorgui Dieng, averaging 3 points a game, knocked four threes and finished with 14.
