Giants-Tigers postponed from 5 hr rain delay; Giants Look Ahead to Series with Marlins Monday

Detroit Tigers fans called it an evening after waiting in the pouring rain for five hours at Comerica Park in Detroit Sun Apr 16, 2023. The visiting San Francisco Giants packed up their equipment and headed to Miami for a series with the Marlins starting Mon Apr 17, 2023 (AP News photo)

Giants Look Ahead to Series with Marlins

By Barbara Mason

Many fans remained in the stands today hoping to see their Detroit Tigers (5-9) take on San Francisco (5-9) but as time wore on it became obvious that there would be no baseball today. The game was postponed and will be made up on July 24th.

The postponement came after five hours of waiting due to weather. It was a bit of a crazy system with some rain that brought out the tarp but subsided quickly. It was dry for three hours but the tarp remained and fans finally left the stadium scratching their heads. It was curious indeed because of the light rain today and the lengthy period of dry weather that followed the brief rainfall.

At any rate, the Giants now look ahead to their next series, a three game series, against the Miami Marlins (8-8) tomorrow with first pitch at 3:40 PM.

Logan Webb is listed as probable although it has also been indicated that Alex Wood may take the mound for the Giants in the opener. Webb is yet to win his first start with a 4.76 ERA and Wood has had an up and down start. The Marlins will send Jesus Luzardo who has yet to lose a game this season with a 1.93 ERA.

The Giants are looking for some better defense because San Francisco has been producing offense even in their losses. They are averaging 4.93 runs per game which ranks them at 13th. It has undoubtedly been a discouraging first three weeks of this season for the Giants. They have only won two series all season and pitching has struggled. The bullpen is a huge issue ranking 28th.

Michael Conforto, the Giants outfielder, has been producing with 3 homers and 6 RBI’s and San Francisco will be counting on him all season.

The Giants will be facing an unbeaten Jesus Luzardo making his fourth start of the season. He shut out the Mets in his season debut and and he limited Minnesota to a single run in his next outing accounting for his 1.93 ERA.

The Giants have not looked very good in this young season while the Marlins have won four of their last five games; they are playing very well right now. San Francisco will be looking to get on the winning track in this upcoming series.

MLB podcast with Charlie O: Yanks German pitching perfect umps on him with hand checks; Jackie Robinson day MLB only 7% African Americans in the game; plus more

New York Yankees pitcher Domingo German, third from left, shows his hand to the umpires during the top of the fourth inning at Yankee Stadium in New York against Minnesota Twins on Sat Apr 15, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the MLB podcast with Charlie O:

#1 Charlie talk about that weird pomp and circumstance with the New York Yankees Domingo German who was in the middle of pitching a perfect game and the umpires. Crew chief James Hoye did a routine hand check on German but later did a real once over and it brought out German interpreter, manager Aaron Boone, catcher Kyle Higashioka, while the umpiring crew stood by as Hoye was lecturing German about washing his hands. Ironically Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli ended up being the one who got tossed out of the game for pressing Hoye on what was going on. Too many questions.

#2 Charlie, Saturday was Jackie Robinson day where all players, managers, coaches, and umpires wear number 42 every Apr 15th to commemorate his arrival in baseball on Apr 15, 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. But yet and still MLB has a low percentage of blacks playing the game around 7%. What would Jackie Robinson say or think if he knew this today?

#3 The Chicago Cubs Cody Bellinger got a nice ovation upon his return to Los Angeles against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on Friday. The ovation went past the time allowed to get back in the batter’s box so Bellinger was called for a strike for clock violation while receiving the standing ovation.

#4 Charlie, Bad Bunny is the latest in a line of artists who are up to signing MLB talent the entertainer has the San Francisco Giants Wilmer Flores, Toronto Blue Jays Santiago Espinal, and the Colorado Rockies Yonathan Daza under his company. Bunny is one of the few musical artists who are in the agency business Jay Z amongst them.

#5 What is going on with Detroit Tigers Javy Baez who got double off at third base not doubling up and taking off for third base with one out on a fly to center as the Toronto Blue Jays threw him out at second base. Baez’ numbers have a lot to be desired with just four hits in 40 games, eight strike outs in 11 games, no home run and one RBI and hitting .159. Baez is in a six year deal worth $140 million.

JT Marcinkowski got the start for San Jose while Tim Melia was in between the pipes for Kansas City.

The match saw a quick strike from the quakes as Cristian Espinoza just nine minutes in scored on a beautiful cross from Cade Cowell.

Just before the end of the first half Jeremy Ebobisse scored on a penalty as Robert Castellanos was given a red card for a professional foul.

The second match started with more offense as Paul Marie found Ebobisse in the box who quickly deposited the ball in the net extending their lead to 3-0.

That goal ended up being the last of the match as the Earthquakes got a convincing home win.

With that win San Jose now finds themselves fifth in the western conference with four wins.

There were three yellow cards given out during the match with all three against San Jose. Possession also favored San Jose at 53.9% to 46.1%.

The final shots favored the Earthquakes 10-9 while shots on goal finished at 6-3 in favor of San Jose as well.

Sacramento Kings game wrap: Kings take game 1 in 126-123 win; Warriors continue to struggle on road

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO–The date was April 15th, 2023. That date will go down in Sacramento history for the Kings. It marked the first time in almost 17 years that the Kings played a playoff game. Sacramento was ready. The Kings fans had packed out downtown early in the day to prepare for the game.

The Kings were set to welcome in the defending NBA Champion Golden State Warriors. The Warriors and Kings were ready for a first-round playoff matchup. The Kings and Warriors game was set to begin at 5:30 PM PST in Sacramento. The Kings took game one of the series 126-123 on Saturday night.

In the first quarter, the Kings came out playing very tight. It was evident in the first quarter that the Kings have very little playoff experience. Shots that the Kings would normally knock down were not falling early. However, the Kings really battled in the first quarter.

The Kings and Warriors both scored 29 points in the first quarter. Neither team got on any run in the first, as they both traded baskets. It became apparent the first team to go on an extended run would most likely win the game.

In the second quarter, the Warriors started to pull away a bit from the Kings. The Warriors outscored the Kings 32-26 in the second quarter to make a little separation at halftime. It was no secret in the game that the Kings starters were playing poorly. At halftime in the game, Kings starters were 0-10 from three-point land.

The Warriors didn’t get very hot either in the third but did just enough to gain the advantage. If the Kings wanted any chance in this game, they needed a strong third quarter.

In the third quarter, the Kings ended the quarter strong. It was an up-and-down quarter all around, but the Kings finished it on the run. The Kings managed to score 36 in the third quarter to take a one-point lead going into the final quarter of the game. The Kings starters were still struggling mightily, but the bench was picking them up. The Kings and Warriors would enter the fourth quarter with the Kings leading 91-90.

In the fourth quarter, it was a dogfight until the end. The Kings went on a run early in the quarter while Steph Curry was on the bench resting. The Kings run was 23-11, which got them back into position in the game. However, the game was not over yet. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson kept the Warriors in it all the way until the final minutes.

Ultimately, the Kings came through victorious as they defeated the Warriors in game . The Warriors were outscored by the Kings 35-33 in the final quarter. The Kings won as time expired on a missed one-leg three-pointer from Stephen Curry.

It was a huge win for Kings fans who had been waiting for this game for 17 years. The Kings best performances came from Malik Monk and De’Aaron Fox, who scored 32 and 38, respectively. The Warriors best performance came from Curry, who scored 30 points.

Up Next: The Kings will stay home for game two of the series on Monday at 7 PM PST.

Barracuda win season finale 4-2 over the Roadrunners, sweep final series

The San Jose Barracuda enjoy their final game of the season with a 4-2 win over the Tucson Roadrunners at Tucson Convention Center Arena on Saturday APR 15, 2023. (San Jose Barracuda)

by Marko Ukalovic

Ending the season on a positive note is always good thing despite not accomplishing their main goal.

The San Jose Barracuda barely missed out on reaching the AHL Playoffs this season, but they went out with high hopes for next season with a 4-2 victory over the Tucson Roadrunners in their season finale on Saturday evening at the Tucson Convention Center Arena.

San Jose ended the 2022-23 season with a record of 31-34-2-5 to finish the year with 69 points in eighth place in the Pacific Division under first year head coach John McCarthy. It was quite the improvement from last season where the ‘Cuda finished dead last in the AHL with just 46 points.

The Barracuda drew first blood 57 seconds into the second period when Danil Gushchin, who had a hot final two weeks of the season, scored an unassisted goal, his 22nd of the season. Gushchin finished the game with three points (1G, 2A).

Tucson (30-33-8-1-69 points) answered back less than six minutes later with an even strength goal. Michael Kesselring scored 15th goal of the season at the 6:13 mark. Milos Keleman recorded the only assist on the play.

San Jose regained the lead with 50 seconds left in the middle frame with an even strength goal. Kyle Criscuolo netted his 17th goal of the season. ‘Cuda captain Andrew Agozzino and Gushchin set up Criscuolo’s goal.

The Roadrunners scored the equalizer early in the third perido when Michael Lomabardi scored his first goal in a Roadrunners uniform at the 4:28 mark. Micah Miller recorded his first point for Tuscon with the lone assist.

Nick Cicek scored the eventual game winning goal for San Jose with 40 seconds left in the final frame. Criscuolo and Guschin recorded assists on the game winner from Cicek.

CJ Suess completed the scoring with an empty net goal, his 10th of the season, with four seconds left in the game to seal the deal for San Jose.

‘Cuda goalie Strauss Mann, who made his second consecutive start, finished the night stopping 22 of the 24 shots to earn back to back wins for the first time this season. Mann finished with a record of 8-7. Roadrunners goalie Tyler Parks was once again on the losing end as he made 32 saves on 35 shots.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 0-for-4 on the power play. Tuscon was 0-for-6.

With the sweep of the series, San Jose won the season series over Tucson 5-3.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Gushchin 2) Cicek 3) Lombardi.

Hartford edges out Oakland Roots 2-1

Hartford Edges Out Oakland Roots 2-1

Written By Troy Ewers

HAYWARD–On a busy Bay Area Saturday, where there’s Giants baseball in the morning, A’s baseball at the Coliseum, Warriors vs. Kings in the NBA playoffs, and Earthquakes having a match in San Jose, you would think the Roots would play backseat to all that action.

Well you would be wrong if you thought that, because in another packed game at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward, the Oakland Roots would play Hartford Athletic. The crowd seemed extra revved up for this game and that’s because the Roots were coming off a win last week and fans were ready to see another one.

From the starting whistle, Oakland fans were hype like it was a playoff atmosphere. The first 20 minutes of this game tell a different story than the entire game. The Roots all season have a knack for holding a majority of possession in games and the first 20 minutes of this one was no different.

This strong offensive hold for Oakland resulted in three good scoring chances, but easy stops for Hartford goalkeeper Richard Sanchez. Hartford saw no real chances of scoring until a big yellow card would be given to Johnny Rodriguez of the Roots and that shifted the tone of the first half so far in Hartford’s favor that the yellow card could be seen by anyone watching the game, it was the most pivotal moment at the time, because four minutes later the momentum resulted in a Hartford goal by Prince Saydee (his fourth of the season) and this wouldn’t be the end for Hartford Athletic.

Five minutes after the last goal, a deep pass down the middle would be picked up by Hartford’s Jeciel Cedeno and he’d get an easy tap in goal passed Blanchette making it 2-0 in the first half. Oakland Roots fans are dedicated, because as the temperature dropped along with the sun, the crowd was still all the way in it in the second half and that was enough to keep the Roots fighting.

In the 73rd minute, Hartford’s Kyle Edwards would get a yellow card and that would give the Roots a penalty shot. Not shy of scoring this season, Dariusz Formella would take the penalty shot and convert it in the top left corner for the Roots’ only goal of the night.

Oakland would gain a couple more close attempts, but none would see the back of the net and the final whistle would blow. 2-1 Hartford Athletic. This game was a strong outing for Oakland, even though they couldn’t secure the W. Rito and Mfeka are fan favorites who get huge cheers when they touch the ball and the back line of Babir, Morad, and Tamacas have shown huge improvements from the first game.

Still a long season ahead for the Roots, but this was certainly a game that fans wanted to see in the favor of The Town. Next game for Oakland is April 23rd against Loudoun in Leesburg, Virginia and all eyes will be on Formella to keep his scoring streak going.

Golden State Warriors game wrap: De’Aaron Fox Rocks Warriors in Game One 126-123

De’Aaron Fox Rocks Warriors in Game One 126-123

By Barbara Mason

Teams across the league have played their hearts out all season vying for a spot in the NBA playoffs. A few select teams have advanced to the first round of the post season which got underway Saturday. Here in Northern California two elite teams the Golden State Warriors (44-38) and the Sacramento Kings (48-34 ) faced each other in round one at Golden One Center; each team with a very different journey leading up to this game. The Kings took full advantage of the struggling Warriors on the road with a 126-123 game 1 win at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.

The defending champion Warriors have had a challenging season that saw them almost unbeatable at Chase Center while barely squeaking out wins on the road; nine of 30 games to be exact. The Kings have not experienced playing in the playoffs for the past 17 years; it’s been back in the 2005-06 season. Their last championship was in 1951. Prior to this season Sacramento had the longest NBA playoff drought which came to an end this year.

The Warriors have a far different and storied history. They have experienced an up and down season this year but they came around in the final weeks leading up to the playoffs. They are looking like a championship team ready to bring home another NBA title. Since 2015 the team has racked up four titles and will be playing for a back-to-back as these playoffs get underway.

These two teams possess some outstanding players and terrific benches that will make this series one to remember. Stephen Curry is the heart of the Warriors while De’Aaron Fox has really come into his own for the Kings.

This game was dead even after the first 12 minutes of play at 29-29. The atmosphere at Golden One was electric, the noise thunderous. Despite playoff inexperience the Kings were showing no signs of nerves keeping up with the Warriors shot for shot.

In the second quarter the game was a see-saw affair trading shots. In the final two minutes of the half the Warriors began to take a bit of a lead and by halftime Golden State had a 61-55 lead.

Despite the lengthy absence of Andrew Wiggins, he showed no signs of rust and came out as if he had not missed a day. Wiggins, Curry, Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole all had double digits at the half.

The Kings had not made a single shot from downtown in the first half but they were having huge success in the paint. Mr. Fourth Quarter Fox was having a heck of a first half. He had double digits as did Malik Monk off the bench and Domantas Sabonis had already secured a double double.

Golden State amped it up in the third quarter leading by as much as ten points at 9:40 into the quarter 67-57. The Kings erased some of the Warriors lead but they could not catch Golden State. With under three minutes left in the third quarter the Warriors again established a ten point lead 86-76. The Kings went on a crazy run with Fox sizzling and after three quarters had reclaimed the lead 91-90. Sacramento had fought their way back into this game.

The fourth quarter was a shoot-out in the wild wild west as both teams traded shots. The Kings were clinging onto a 101-97 lead with 9:20 left in the game. Sacramento turned it up a notch in the final minutes leading 119-114 with three minutes left in the game. The final 18.8 seconds was a crazy affair with the Kings leading 124-123. With 2.9 left on the clock in regulation, Sacramento led 126-123. The Kings had won their first playoff game since April 30.2006.

The hero for the Kings was De’Aaron Fox with 38 points the second most for a first time playoff appearance. Bench player Malik Monk had a terrific game with 32 points. All together Sacramento had 55 points off the bench. They had 60 points in the paint to the Warriors 44 that made a huge difference in the game.

The team played hard for their “Coach of the Year” Mike Brown who has had so much to do with the success of this team. The pieces were primarily there; Brown knew exactly how to piece it all together and we have seen the result. We all witnessed basketball brilliance in this game.

It was a tough loss for Golden State after the lead they carried in the third quarter. The Warriors had a number of wide open looks in the final minutes but could not connect. Curry had the team high with 30 points followed by Thompson with 21.

Wiggins and Poole had 17 points each off the bench. This is just the beginning of this best of seven series between these two teams. The Warriors hope to bounce back in game two to be played at Golden One Monday night with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Oakland A’s game wrap: Mets Canha HR haunts old teammates in 3-2 win over A’s

OAKLAND–It came as no surprise to anyone aware of last night’s events at the Coliseum that the Athletics had optioned Hogan Harris to their triple A farm club in Las Vegas this morning. To replace the shell shocked rookie reliever they recalled the delightfully named left handed pitcher Richard Lovelady from the Aviators. “What,” as WC Fields observed in My Little Chickadee, “euphoneous appellation.”

The results of this afternoon’s Jackie Robinson Day battle between the visiting New York Mets and your For Now Oakland Athletics were surprising, if not completely unexpected. A well played disappointing loss of the east bayers to the visitors from Queens.

The 8-6 (now 9-6) Mets sent righty Carlos Carrasco (0-2, 11.42) to the mound, and his atrocious numbers were matched by Oakand’s starter, Shintaro Fujiinami (0-2, 17.55). It did not promise to be a pitchers’ even though, from a longer perspective, that was a possibility.

Carrasco came to the game with a lifetime record of 104-87, 3.92, and Fujinami was, before his recent troubles with control, a standout in Japan’s Central League, where he had a 57-54, 3.41, even including his less than stellar six years in that circuit. As it turned out, the long view was the right one,

The green and gold took an early lead, putting two runs on the board in the bottom of he second. Ramón Laureano led off with a singe to left and motored around to third when Aledmys Díaz one hopped the left field fence for a double. After Jesús Aguilar flew out to right and Conner Capel grounded out to first , Carrasco plunked catcher Carlos Pérez to put runners on the corners. Esteiury Ruíz then singled Díaz home with Oakland’s second tally.

New York got one of those runs back in the top of the third when Pete Alonso hit the strie counter to the right of the left field foul pole at the bottom of the second deck, The blast came on an 0-1 slider that travelled at 88.5mph. It left Alonso’s bat at 107.3 mph.

Fujinori, whose longest stint on the mound had been 4-1/3 innings pitched himself out of a jam to preserve the A’s 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth. He hit Marte with a pitch to open the frame. The one time Athletic then swiped second and advanced to third on Francisco Lindor’s ground out to second. And he died on third after Díaz fielded Alonso’s sharp grounder on the edge of the infield grass and threw him out at first. McNeil grounded out to first, Fujinami covering, to end the threat.

Carrasco hit Díaz with a pitch to start the bottom of the sixth, his third hit batter of the afternoon. Whether or not it was in retaliation for the Marte HBP, it was Carrasco’s last deli very for the day, Drew Smith replaced him, Carrasco had pitched five innings and allowed two runs, both earned, on four hits (by, not of, batters) and a walk.He threw 88 pitches, 51 for strikes and lowered his ERA to 8.56.

Carrasco got a no decision because Mark Canha, a favorite of Oakland fans when he was with the Athletics, tied the game with a leadoff blast to left in the top of the seventh. It was his fifth round tripper of ’23. When Daniel Vogelbach followed that with a base on balls, skipper Mark Kotsay lifted Fujinami in favor of Trevor May.

Tim Locastro, running for Vogelbach,, stole second and scored on Brandon Nemmo’s two out double into the right field corner. The inning ended with a fine catch by Lauriano against the right centerfield fence of a blast by Marte, but New York now led, 3-2, and Fujinami was charged with both runs.

In spite of that, he had pitched a fine game, going six innings and allowing three runs, all earned but one posthumous, on four hits. He walked two and hit a batter. His pitch count was 92, 53 strikes. He reduced his ERA to 7.94 but was on the hook for the loss.

Zach Jackson set the Mets down to a conga beat in the eighth, one, two, three.

Adam Ottavino wasn’t that efficient when the A’s came up in their half of the frame. He hit a batter and walked another and collaborated in allowing a couple of steals, but Oakland didn’t score on him.

Dany Jiménez pitched a perfect top of the ninth, keeping Oakland’s hopes for a comeback alive.

David Robertson brought his 0-0-2, 0.00 record to the mound in the bottom of the ninth. Pérez led off with a solid single to left. The A’s played little ball as Ruíz sacrificed him to second. Kemp hit a nubber in front of the plate,, and Pérez was 90 feet away from scoring the tying run. But New York was only out away from winning the game. Kevin Smith, who had pinch hit for Peterson in the seventh went down swinging, And that was that.

Smith got the win; he’s now 1-0, 2,84. The hard luck loss went to Fujinami, now 0-3. Robertson earned his third save in as many opportunities.

Tomorrow, the A’s will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their 1973 World Series championship team. JP Sears (0-0, 5.79) will face Max Scherzer (2-1,4.41). That’s Sunday, with game time at 1:07

Giants drop another game in 11th to Tigers 7-6 at Comerica

Giants Drop Yet Another Game in the 11th Inning to Tigers 7-6

By Barbara Mason

Saturday afternoon the San Francisco Giants (5-9) played game two in their series with the Detroit Tigers (5-9) and dropped their second straight 11th inning game in a row to Detroit 7-6 at Comerica Park in Detroit. Friday night the Giants went 11 innings only to lose 7-5.

The Giants tied the game in the top of the 11th inning leading for the first time in the game but allowed a Tiger home run with two runners on base and that was the ball game. San Francisco did have opportunities in the game but did not cash in. Saturday was a fresh start for the Giants who wanted to even this series in the quick turn-around but once again lost in a game of inches.

Game recap: The Giants had a great start scoring two runs in each of the first three innings. Blake Sabol hit a home run in the second with a runner on base and J.D. Davis homered in the third with Mike Yastrzemski on base and the Giants had a 6-1 lead through three innings

The Tigers did get up on the board in the second inning when Kerry Carpenter hit a solo home run for the 6-1 tally.

The game turned in Detroit’s favor in the fourth inning when the Giants defense came apart. After a great start on the mound by Anthony DeSclafani, the Giants bullpen just couldn’t produce defensively so big problems as the Giants let Detroit back into this game. What is concerning is that San Francisco is fourth in the list of the worst ERA’s in the league with 6.02.

Detroit would add more runs in the fifth inning. Zach McKinstry doubled bringing one run home and Matt Vierling grounded into a fielder’s choice. McKinstry scored and the Tigers trailed 6-3.

Detroit would tie up this game in the eighth inning. Javier Baez doubled and Spencer Torkelson singled bringing three runs home and this game was knotted at six. It was deja vu for San Francisco. Last night the game went into extra innings in a losing effort.

This game came to an end on a horrible note, albeit a familiar one. It was another 11th inning win for the Tigers. Miguel Cabrera singled and Spencer Torkelson scored and that was the walk off win for Detroit after trailing by five runs.

Desclafani had a good start going 6.2 innings. He allowed six hits and three runs but it was the bullpen that continues to struggle. Another sore spots in this game were the uncharacteristic back to back errors we saw from Brandon Crawford in the fifth inning.

The bottom line was the horrible defense we saw in this game. It is still very early in the season but it was a real gut punch for San Francisco to lose in the 11th inning of not one but two games in this series.

Sunday the Giants will start Logan Webb (0-3 ERA 4.76) and will try to avoid being swept by the Tigers whose opposing with Matthew Boyd (0-1 ERA 4.00) in game three. First pitch at Comerica is scheduled for 10:10 AM.
