Dejan Milojevic’s sudden passing stuns the Warriors and the NBA

Tragedy struck the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday. One of the assistant coaches, Dejan Milojevic, suffered a heart attack at a team dinner Tuesday night in Salt Lake City and passed away on Wednesday. Milojevic was forty-six years old. The game between the Warriors and the Utah Jazz was postponed and will be rescheduled later.

Milojevic was in his third season with the Warriors. He had a 14-year playing career in Serbia. When he became a coach, he was known for working with centers. He mentored Boban Marjanovic, Ivaca Zuban, Kevon Looney, and Nikola Jokic. Milojevic was very instrumental in bringing Dario Saric to the Warriors this year.

Milojevic was married and was the father of two children. Steve Kerr said this about Dejan: “We are absolutely devastated by Dejan’s sudden passing,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said in a statement. “This is a shocking and tragic blow for everyone associated with the Warriors and an incredibly difficult time for his family, friends, and all of us who had the incredible pleasure to work with him.”

Kings Suffer a Third Loss In a Row to Phoenix 119-117

This was another stunning loss for the Sacramento Kings (23-17). Sacramento had led throughout three quarters and most of the fourth quarter before the Phoenix Suns (22-18) were able to take the lead. The culprit in this game were the 8 Sacramento turnovers in the fourth quarter leading to the 119-117 final. The Kings had led by as much as 22 points in this game but just faded away in the fourth quarter in an absolute melt down.

Game recap: The Kings won both quarters in the first half. Sacramento won the opening quarter 39-27 and finished up the first half with a 29-24 second quarter win taking a 68-51 lead into the locker room. The Kings defense made thing very difficult for the Suns in the first half. 

They held both the Suns Kevin Durant and Devon Booker to seven points apiece. The Suns Grayson Allen was the only Phoenix player on the floor with double digits after two quarters of play. 

The Kings De’Aaron Fox had 17 points in the first half. Sacha Vezenkov shot for 12 off the bench and Domantas Sabonis finished the half with 11 points and eight rebounds. He already had six assists and would be looking for another triple double as the two teams took the court in the second half.

Sacramento had a terrific defensive effort in the first half forcing the Suns into turnovers. At the half the Kings had four turnovers and the Suns had 11. They had really contained Durant and Booker and would have to keep pressure on both of them in the second half. There was still a lot of basketball to be played in this game.

Going into the third quarter Fox hit the teams 14th three. They had shut down the Suns from outside allowing only eight threes from Phoenix. At 7:27 the Kings had taken a 82-61 lead. Phoenix has a lethal offense that was slow to get onboard in this game and Sacramento wanted to keep it that way. 

The one thing that the Kings wanted to avoid was letting Booker get hot. With under four minutes left in the quarter six Kings had double digits and Sabonis was one rebound away from another triple double. 

With under two minutes left on the clock in the third quarter, the Suns made a run cutting the Kings lead to eleven points 92-81. As the third came to an end, the Suns had pulled to within ten points. 

The Kings pushed back and after three quarters led 96-84. Booker had started to come alive and Sacramento would have to dig deep in the fourth quarter. Fox was leading the offense with 25 points.

Sacramento pushed the lead back to 104-87 in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. Sabonis hit his 11th triple double of the season in the fourth as the Kings continued to dominate defensively. Eight minutes into the final quarter Sacramento had pushed their lead back to 22 points 109-87. In a flash the Suns started to push back and the 22 point lead shrunk to 15 points going on a 7-0 run. 

Every time the Suns pushed, the Kings pushed right back. With under five minutes left in the game head coach Mike Brown called a timeout. The Suns had cut the Kings 22 point lead to ten points and there would be more from Phoenix before this game was all said and done. 

The Suns were scoring off of some horrendous mistakes from Sacramento. With under a minutes left in the game the Kings had a three point lead. With 18.7 left in the game the Suns had delivered a gut-punch taking a 117-115 lead. 

Fox tied up the game with 18.8 on the clock. Fox was called for a foul on Durant and Durant delivered giving the Suns a 119-117 lead in a shocking turn around. 

The Suns prevailed winning this game 119-117 and the Kings had suffered yet another devastating loss. Sacramento had eight turnovers in the fourth quarter and this was absolutely the straw that broke the camels back. It was a real stunner!

Fox had the team high with 33 points. Sabonis finished with 21 points, 11 assists and 12 rebounds garnering another triple double. Going into the fourth quarter the Kings only had six turnovers finishing with 14. 

It was those turnovers that killed Sacramento. In the fourth quarter the Kings couldn’t score inside nor outside. It became stagnant offensively after those three opening quarters handing the Kings another disappointing loss. They were not able to finish this game after playing so well through three quarters.

It was an amazing comeback by the Phoenix Suns and they deserve a lot of credit after trailing by such a margin. They hung in the game and finished the game taking advantage of the multitude of mistakes from Sacramento.

Post game notes: Tuesday night the Kings traveled to the “Valley of the Sun” taking on the Suns at Footprint Center. Sunday night the Kings suffered a heart breaking loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in overtime 143-142. Lillard hit a 32-foot buzzer beater with 1.1 left on the game clock. Sacramento was looking to get back on track but ended up dropping their third game in a row to the Suns.

The Suns have a daunting starting roster with Durant, Booker and Allen. Between these two teams there was some electric offense that went right down to the wire with Durant sinking two free throws for the win.

The Kings will now head home to Sacramento to take on the Indiana Pacers Thursday night. Golden 1 Center will look pretty good to the team after a rough finish to this road trip. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM. 

 

     

 

Sharks Fall to Blackhawks 2-1 in Shootout; San Jose suffers third straight loss

The San Jose Sharks lost 2-1 in a shootout to the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday. Cole Guttman, Rem Pitlick and Boris Katchouk scored for Chicago. Ryan Carpenter and Kevin Labanc scored for San Jose. Petr Mrazek made 37 saves for the win. Mackenzie Blackwood made 24 saves in the loss.

The Sharks had a lot of chances and shots in Tuesday’s game. Sharks Head Coach David Quinn talked about the frustrating loss:

“I thought we played well, I thought we had a lot of grade-A’s, I thought we played well, we played hard. We’ve been having a tough time scoring goals here over the last few days. But if we play like that the pucks’ll eventuually end up going in.”

Cole Guttman scored on the power play with a shot between the legs at 10:41 of the first period. The puck bounced off of Ferraro’s skate to end up in the net. Assists went to Ryan Donato and Kevin Korchinski.

Ryan Carpenter tied the game with a snap shot at 5:13 of the third period. Justi Bailey created the play by winning a puck battle and getting the puck to Carpenter. Assists went to Justin Bailey and Mike Hoffman.

Rem Pitlick and Boris Katchouk scored for Chicago and Kevin Labanc scored for San Jose in a nine-round shootout.

The Sharks out-shot the Blackhawks 38-25 and won 50.9% of the faceoffs. The Sharks power play had three shots in two power plays and gave up one short-handed shot. Their penalty kill gave up one goal and eight shots in four penalties.

The Sharks next play on Saturday at 7:00 PM PT in San Jose against the Anaheim Ducks.

Buzzer Beater Finish For The Spartans As They Lose 85-82 To Fresno State

The Fresno State Bulldogs hosted the San Jose State Spartans in a Mountain West Conference game. Three of the four conference games for SJSU have been decided by three points or fewer. They lost at Wyoming on a buzzer beater by the Cowboys’ Akuel Kot, fell by only three to No. 19 San Diego State and won at the buzzer at Air Force.

The Spartans have yet to play a conference game where the winning team won by more than ten points. Boise State came closest when they beat the Spartans by nine. This was a close three point game on Tuesday night in Fresno but the Spartans couldn’t hold on taking a tough 85-82 loss.

The first half of the game looked like Fresno State was going to run away with this early, but not if Tibet Gorener had anything to say about it. Spartans forward Gorener utilized every bit of his 19 minutes of the half. 22 points and 5 rebounds for Gorener led SJSU on a back and forth.

Spartans went 53% from the three point line which not only kept them in the game as halftime approached, but a one point lead at halftime. Fresno State hit 56% from the field, but it couldn’t stop Gorener and the Spartans from grabbing a lead. 40-39 Spartans at half. 

The second half was another close call for San Jose State. The whole half these two teams traded buckets Gorener adding another 10 points to his total, Trey Anderson had 21 points and MJ Amey Jr. came in with a clean 13 points.

The game was another heavyweight bout for the Spartans where no one had a real advantage, but the whole time these two never slacked off. When the final seconds ticked down Amey Jr. got a turnover off an offensive foul and after the Fresno State timeout with four seconds left.

The Bulldogs guard Isaiah Hill who walked out of here with 24 points, 16 coming in the second half, hit a contested three and once again the Spartans had a game decided by three points or fewer. Fresno State wins off a buzzer beater 85-82. 

Spartans can’t shake these late game pressure situations, making it the fourth out of five conference games that were decided by three points or fewer. The highlights for the Spartans, was Tibet Gorener having 32 points, but in SJSU’s case it’s another key player for them balling out, but can’t close it out.

The Spartans have a “long” break before their next game. An Eight day break and then the Spartans are back in San Jose at the Provident Credit Union Event Center against New Mexico on January 24th.

Sourdif’s heroics in overtime give Checkers 5-4 win over Barracuda

Justin Sourdif scored the game winning goal at the 2:34 mark of overtime as the Charlotte Checkers defeated the San Jose Barracuda 5-4 on Tuesday evening at Bojangles Coliseum.

San Jose has lost a season-worst six games in a row. Charlotte has won two games in a row.

Brendan Perlini set up Sourdif on a two-on-one odd man rush into the ‘Cuda zone. Sourdif beat goalie Magnus Chrona with a wrist shot top shelf for his second goal of the game and eighth goal of the season.

Charlotte (19-13-4-0) opened the game with two goals in the first two minutes of the game. First Justin Sourdif set up Mackie Samoskevich with a drop pass and Samoskevich beat starting ‘Cuda goalie Eetu Makiniemi with a wrist shot for his 11th goal of the season at the 1:29 mark of the first period.

Santuu Kinnunen then scored his third goal of the season 46 seconds later when he beat Makiniemi with a wrist shot from the left slot as the Checkers used an odd man rush after a turnover inside the ‘Cuda zone.

That ended the evening for Makiniemi as he made just two saves on four shots as Chrona replaced him the rest of the game.

San Jose (11-8-6-0) cut the lead in half 26 seconds later. Brent Marek’s battle for the puck inside the Checkers zone bounced up in the air and over to Tristen Robins who collected the puck and beat Checkers goalie Ludovic Waeber with a wrist shot for his first goal of the season.

The Checkers regained their two-goal lead on the power play late in the opening frame. Uvis Balinskis found Wilmer Skoog at the point and the Charlotte defenseman’s wrist shot beat Chrona through a sea of traffic in front of the crease at the 18:43 mark.

The Barracuda made it a 3-2 game 46 seconds into the second period with a power play goal. Leon Gawanke’s shot from the point was tipped past Waeber by Oskar Lindblom for his first goal of the season.

Charlotte answered back its second power play goal of the game. Samoskevich found Sourdif up in the left slot. Sourdif waited before depositing a wrist shot to the short side for his seventh goal of the season at the 12:29 mark.

San Jose once again cut their deficit to one goal after winning a faceoff inside the Checkers zone. Ethan Frisch found Danil Gushchin along the right boards. Gushchin then fed a rink wide pass over to Ethan Cardwell who one-timed a wrist shot past Waeber for his 11th goal of the season at the 14:59 mark.

The ‘Cuda tied with just over two minutes left in the middle frame when Tanner Kaspick outbattled Waeber behind the net for the puck. Kaspick fed a wide open Lindblom who backhanded the puck into an empty net for his second goal of the game at the 17:57 mark.

Spencer Knight replaces Waeber to start the third period. Waeber finished with eight saves on 12 shots. Knight (12-7-4-2) stopped all seven shots he faced to earn his 12th victory of the season. Chrona (4-10-3-0) finished with 32 saves on 35 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 1-for-2 on the power play. Charlotte was 2-for-3.

San Jose is 0-6 in games that have ended in overtime this season.

#1 David the Green Bay Packers are on a roll they have defeated the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the playoffs and now face the San Francisco 49ers at Levi Stadium this Saturday night at Levi Stadium.

#2 Lots of credit for the job that Packers quarterback Jordan Love did last weekend against the Cowboys going 16-21 for 227 yards and three touchdowns. The Packers beat the Cowboys who have the fifth best defense in football.

#3 The 49ers are the top seeded team in the NFL and the Packers were considered long odds coming into the playoffs. Do the Packers have a chance to keep this going. They have been the surprise team.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 The Oakland A’s will be hosting a public event similar to a Fan Fest in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada at $125 a pop. This public event could be scene as a barometer and how many fans will attend and how many will season tickets they’ll sell of 2028.

#2 The renderings still have not been unveiled as of yet and the A’s have not revealed their financing plans for the park. Also they have not announced where they will play after the 2025 season although insiders say they are leaning towards the San Francisco Giants triple A park in Sacramento Sutter Health Park.

#3 The A’s have a deal with NBC Sports Bay Area through the 2033 season and NBC would pay on that contract so long as the A’s play their games in the Bay Area. A’s team president David Kaval said knowing Sacramento is outside the Bay Area NBC would not be obligated to pay on the deal.

#4 There has been talked that both the A’s and NBC Bay Area would reach a middle ground on the contract and the A’s would get a reduced amount on the contract that would pay less than the $67 million that they got in 2023 season.

#5 A deal between the City of Oakland beyond 2025 looks impossible. The A’s and the City are not on good terms and the fact that the City and A’s never got to the point to where they could make Howard Terminal a reality plays into playing at the Coliseum in 2025 unlikely as negotiations had broke down before their decision to move to Las Vegas. Also the A’s fans and A’s owner John Fisher look like they will not be patching things up anytime soon. The A’s could play 30-40 of their home games at Oracle Park home of the Giants and the rest in Sacramento.

Green returns but it’s not enough; Short-handed Grizzlies send Warriors down to defeat 116-107

It was a very cold evening in Memphis on Martin Luther King Day. For the Golden State Warriors, it was a very strange game. The Warriors held the Memphis Grizzlies to 37% from the floor as they took 12 shots less than the Warriors, yet won the game 116-107.

The Warriors head coach, Steve Kerr, had to be shaking his head after his team’s performance Monday night in Memphis. The numbers show the Warriors committed too many fouls and too many turnovers. Memphis made 20 threes in 54 attempts.

The Warriors made ten in 31 tries. The referees called 25 fouls on the Warriors to give the Grizzlies 40 free throws. Memphis made 32. The Warriors went to Charity Stripe ten times and made nine. The Warriors could not overcome the 30-point advantage nor the 23-point difference from the free-throw line.

The Grizzlies scored 30 points off turnovers. Memphis’ defense kept the Warriors from attempting more three-point shots. The Warriors’ only statistical advantage was scoring in the point. 

Even with the Warrior miscues, the game was a nip-and-tuck affair. Neither team had a double-digit lead for the first three quarters. The Warriors led by two points at the end of the first halftime, 56-53.

The Grizzlies cut the lead to one, 86-85, at the end of the third period. The Warriors had their largest lead of the night, 86-79 in the third quarter. The Grizzlies scored the last six points to trail 86-85. 

The Warriors needed to stop fouling as well as turning the ball over. Memphis needed to stop the Warrior’s offense. We learned the answer: Memphis wanted the game more than the Warriors. The last lead the Warriors had came when Stephen Curry made a three to put the Warriors ahead 91-90.

The Grizzlies defense shackled Curry and Thompson. Memphis went ahead by 12 points,112-104. Memphis went on to win 116-107.

Game Notes: The Warriors were without Moses Moody, Gary Payton II, and Chris Paul. Draymond Green, in his first game back after serving a 12-game suspension, played 24 minutes, and his numbers were seven points, seven rebounds and four assists. The Grizzlies had four players unavailable. The biggest name on their list was Ja Morant, who was out with a shoulder injury for the year.

The Warriors are now 18-22. The Grizzlies improved to 15-25.

The Warriors had four players in double figures. Curry led the Warriors with 26 points, four rebounds, and eight assists. Jonathan Kuninga had a double-double with 20 points and eleven rebounds. For Kuminga, it was his 20th double-digit game in a row.

Dario Saric (13) and Andrew Wiggins(16) were the other Warriors with more than ten points. The Grizzlies had six players in double-figures. Vince Williams led Memphis with 24 points. Greg Jackson had 23. Davios Roddy 12, Jacob Gilyard (11), Santi Aldama (11), and Luke Kennard(11) were the players that led Memphis to the win.

The Warrior’s next game will be against the Utah Jazz on Wednesday evening at 5 pm.

#1 Marko, rough game for the Barracuda on Saturday night in Bakersfield down 3-0 tried to make an effort to come back in the third period and getting goals but ended up losing it 3-2 to the Bakersfield Condors.

#2 Danil Gushchin has been the bright spot for the Barracuda getting to a team leading 30 points. Gushchin also has a team leading 13 goals. The Condors may have won the game but that didn’t stop Gushchin.

#3 Marko, the way Gushchin has been playing it shouldn’t be that long before Gushchin might just get that call up to the Sharks.

#4 Magnus Chrona talk about the job he’s been doing in goal for San Jose. He did allow three goals by the Condors but stopped 28 shots and it was a one goal loss for San Jose.

#5 Next game for the Barracuda in Charlotte against the Checkers who are 8-13-4-0 the Checkers who are sixth in the Atlantic have won five of their last ten games. How do you see the Barracuda and Checkers matching up at 4:00pm PT on Tuesday.

#5 Warriors go back to the drawing board after their Saturday night loss in Milwaukee this time on Monday night the Warriors tip off against the Memphis Grizzlies who are 13th in the Western Conference and have lost six of their last ten games. The Grizzlies took a loss against the New York Knicks on Saturday night they have the home floor Monday can they beat back the Warriors on a Martin Luther King Birthday Holiday special tip off at 3:00pm PT.
