The South American country of Perú’s population is over 34 million people. Fútbol (Soccer in the US) is their number one sport. However, pitcher Jesús Luzardo, currently with the Miami Marlins starting rotation and previously with the Oakland A’s,(his first team in the major leagues), was born in Lima, Perú. His parents are Venezuelans, a country where baseball is undoubtedly the #1 sport.

Luzardo debuted with the Oakland A’s in 2019, as the A’s No. 6 prospect. Just a year before, On February 13, 2018, in his Alma Mater in Parkland, Florida, a former student killed 17 people when he opened fire inside the high school.

Luzardo intended to work out at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on that same afternoon of the shooting, he was warned not to come by his former coach, and that might have saved his life. During the shooting, Luzardo stayed in contact with people inside the school via text messages.

In 2019, before the team reported to Spring Training, Luzardo was at the A’s Fanfest in Jack London Square; he sat with yours truly and Mauricio Segura at the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame and signed autographs for dozens of A’s fans who stood in line. He was gracious and pleased and, as he told me, “lucky to be in the major leagues”.

But a couple of years later, he wasn’t happy to be traded to the Miami Marlins, he felt good pitching here at Oakland and enjoyed the Bay Area. But the life of a major leaguer always included the possibility of being traded. He started with the A’s, went to the Marlins and he might changed uniforms soon again.

Luzardo could be traded again before this 2024 season gets underway. In his first years with the A’s, he did not pitch much and struggled, but it was a learning process like it is many times with young pitchers.

Last season, the lefty with the Miami Marlins ended with a record of 10-10 and a 3.58 ERA in 32 games he started. He owns an outstanding fastball, especially among left-handed starters who, in 2023, threw at least 200 fastballs; he ranked second out of 57. The southpaw was one of 12 pitchers to reach 205 strikeouts in 2023, when he fanned 208. Was that good?

Well, only Blake Snell,two-time Cy Young winner, Gerrit Cole, won Cy Young in 2023, Kevin Gausman, finalist this past seasons to win the Cy Young, Zac Gallen, who finished second in the NY for the Cy Young in 2023 and and Luis Castillo, still one of the best pitchers who will soon win a Cy Young.

Jesús Luzardo is maturing as a pitcher, and if the Orioles, Pirates, or anyother teams currently pursuing him could land a pitcher ready to be a winner at the young age of 26.

#1 Taking a look at last Wednesday night’s game at SAP Center in San Jose in overtime the San Jose Sharks Tomas Hertl scored the game winner to defeat the Metropolitan first place New York Rangers 3-2.

#2 The Rangers came out of the gate in the first and second periods scoring a goal in each period for a 2-0 lead.

#3 The Sharks who have been inspired since Logan Couture’s return from his injury scored twice in the third period to even the score 2-2.

#4 Hertl in the overtime scored at 1:29 that gave the Sharks their third straight win, “(Jan Ruuta and Alex Barabanov) made a great play and I got an empty-netter,” Hertl said. “Kind of an easy goal for me, but a great job by them for sure. Huge win for us, and it’s nice to have three in a row.”

#5 The Sharks have a day game today at SAP against the visiting Buffalo Sabres a 1pm PT face off. The Sabres have been going well of late inning six of their last ten games. How do you see today’s match up?

Makiniemi makes 37 saves to secure a shutout victory for the Barracuda over Calgary 3-0

SAN JOSE- The Barracuda looked to extend their winning streak against the Wranglers on Friday night.

In between the pipes for San Jose was Eetu Makiniemi while for the Wranglers Dustin Wolf was in goal.

The first period was rather uneventful, with no goals and the Wranglers getting the most of the chances with 15 shots on goal.

The one penalty in the period was killed off by San Jose as Valtteri Pulli was called for holding.

It took a while to get a goal but 13:24 into the second Ethan Frisch got his first career AHL goal.

Then on the power play San Jose extended their lead to two as Nathan Todd got his ninth goal of the season.

The second period also saw plenty of penalties mainly taken by Calgary as they took five.

The final frame saw the home team pull away even further as Jordy Bellerive scored his fourth of the campaign.

Makiniemi was then able to secure the shutout which was his second of the season as he made 37 saves.

Neither team’s powerplay was all that notable except for the penalty kill as Calgary went 0/4 while San Jose went 1/4.

The shots in this one favored Calgary 37-21.

The three stars of the game were: 1st: Eetu Makiniemi 2nd: Ethan Firsch 3rd: Valterri Pulli

The Barracuda will look to extend this winning streak to three at home as they will play Calgary tomorrow at 6 p.m.

Stanford Cardinal game wrap: Cardinal Wounded and Heartbroken in Bears’ Territory, 73-71, on a Friday Night Battle of the Bay I

BERKELEY, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (10-9, 5-4 Pac-12) dropped Part ! of the Battle of the Bay against the California Golden Bears (8-12, 4-5 Pac-12), 73-71, inside Haas Pavilion.

Stanford scratched the scoreboard first , on a split free throws scenario.by senior forward Spencer Jones. Cal took their only lead in the first half (4-3( shortly thereafter.

Although the home team was not able to get over the hump again in the first 20 minutes, Cal kept the game within reach by halftime. Stanford ked by as much as 8 points, and half of that at intermission, 40-36.

No Cardinal hooper reached double=digits, although a triumvirate had 8 points to show for themselves. Spencer Jones, Michael Jones and Kanaan Carlyle all had 2/3 of a dozen points. The Golden Bears had one player with at least 10 points. Junior guard Jaylon Tyson tallied 10 points and 5 rebounds.

Stanford increased the lead to 10 points, early in the second half. However, the Bears clawed their way back, and presumably took the lead 51-50 at the 12:43 mark, Unfortunately for Cal, the three-point shot by senior Jalen Cone, was ruled a 2-pointer instead.. Cal still didn;t get over the hump. at that juncture of the game.

Stanford went on a 7-0 run after that, seemingly in control of the contest. The Golden Bears were determined to come back and eventually be in front of their cross-Bay neighbors and rivals.

After that first disappointment early in the second half, Cal did officially get into a leading position 62-60 (7:13). Despite letting go of a 10-point advantage, Stanford regained the lead on several occasions. As a matter of fact, the game was tied 8 times and there were 7 lead changes.

Those moments were obviously late in the ball game, because overall Stanford had the lead for approximately 31 and a half minutes, while California had their advantage for 26 less minutes than the Cardinal, but led when it really counted,,,at the final whistle.

With the consistent back and forth of the final minutes and seconds, it came down to game-winning free throws by redshirt junior guard, Jalen Celestine, with :58 remaining on the clock. Stanford had a costly turnover by Maxime Raynaud, the Celestine converted another FT, which presented the final score of 73-71, California Golden Bears.

Stanford had 0 players in double-digits at the half, but garnered four at game’s end. Spencer Jones (13), Brandon Angel (12), Kanaan Carlyle (12) and Maxime Raynaud (11) & 13 rebounds.

Cal had a lone player to reach those heights after 20 minutes of playing time, but had a whopping 6 after 40 minutes of regulation time. Jaylon Tyson (14), Fardaws Aimaq (13) & 12 rebounds, Jalen Celestine (12), Keonte Kennedy (11), Grant Newell (11) & 10 rebounds and Jalen Cone (10).

Stanford will next be in action Thursday, February 1 in the Grand Canyon State, as they take on the Arizona State Sun Devils at 6 PM PDT/7 Mountain.. on ESPN2. Cal plays against the Arizona Wildcats, on the same date, a half hour earlier, on P-12 Network.

Note: Both Coach Haas and Madsen both were coaching against their Alma Maters, and are excited the both will continue in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Cal Bears game wrap: Cal defeats Stanford 73-71 in another seesaw thriller at the ‘House of Pain’

The Bears once again took another seesaw thriller down to the wire, as they defeated their hated rivals, the Stanford Cardinal, 73-71 at a packed and gold-out Haas Pavilion, which is now referred to by Bears Head Coach Mark Madsen as the ‘House of Pain.’

The Bears were back at it after nearly a week off, following their incredible win over the Washington State Cougars Saturday. Tonight, they welcomed Stanford in, as the Bears and their fans would be in for yet another wild night of basketball.

Stanford won the opening tip, and Spencer Jones drew a foul from Jaylon Tyson, which sent Spencer to the line, where he made one of two. Kanaan Carlyle made a jumper to make it 3-0 Stanford.

Cal got on the board when the roles between Tyson and Jones were reversed. Jones fouled Tyson, and Tyson hit one of two from the line. Keonte Kennedy then hit a three-ball to give the Bears their first lead of the night.

The Cardinal responded with a 9-0 run. Spencer Jones scored seven of the nine points in that drive, and Michael Jones hit a jumper for the other two, as Stanford jumped out to a 12-4 lead. Tyson, Gus Larson and Grant Newell all hit layups to make it a 16-13 game. 

The Cardinal would start to pull away a bit, but the Bears kept it close. Jalen Cone hit a pair of free throws to put the Bears within two at 25-23 with exactly seven minutes remaining in the first half. Michael Jones then hit a pair of three-balls, and the Cardinal jumped back out to a 31-23 lead. 

The Cardinal led 33-25, but the Bears came back to tie it with a 9-1 run. Jaylon Tyson laid one in; Fardaws Aimaq hit a pair of shots; and Keonte Kennedy hit a three. It was 34-34 with 1:45 remaining.

The Cardinal regained a little bit of momentum to close out the first half. Jared Bynum hit a three to put Stanford back ahead, 37-34, and Jalen Cone hit two from the line after drawing a foul. Kanaan Carlyle hit a jump shot, and hit one from the line after being fouled on the play.

After neither team scored in the final 44 seconds, Stanford went into the half up 40-36.

The second half got underway with no scoring for the first minute and 27 seconds. Brandon Angel hit a three for Stanford, who took control of the game. Maxime Raynaud laid one in, and Spencer Jones hit a three to open up a 48-38 lead for Stanford.

It was 50-40, and what do you know, the Bears scored ten unanswered points in an all-around team effort to tie it again. Newell, Kennedy, Tyson and Cone all scored, and it was 50-50 with 12:43 remaining. 

Stanford took charge once again. Andrej Stojakovic—the son of former NBA forward, Peja Stojakovic—got the drive started with a pair of layups. Jared Bynum hit a three, and the Cardinal were back out to a 57-50 lead.

It was 60-53 Cardinal with 9:19 to go, and the Bears of course had another comeback left in them. Jalen Celestine laid one in; drew the foul; and hit his shot from the line to make it 60-56. Celestine made another layup, and Jalen Cone hit two from the line to tie it at 60-60.

Fardaws Aimaq then hit a pair of jumpers to give the Bears a 64-60 lead, their first lead since the early minutes of the first half.

6:14 remained, and we would be in for yet another epic finish at the House of Pain. Maxime Raynaud and Spencer Jones both drew fouls, and both hit each of their two shots from the line to tie it at 64-64. Brandon Angel was then fouled, and he hit both of his shots at the line to put Stanford back ahead, 66-64.

4:30 remained, and there was no scoring for another 55 seconds until Grant Newell laid one in to tie it at 66-66. Carlyle hit a jumper to put Stanford back ahead, but Aimaq was fouled and hit both free throws to make it 68-68.

Celestine hit a jumper to put the Bears back ahead at 70-68 with 2:16 to go. Raynaud was fouled, and hit one of two from the line; and Brandon Angel was fouled, and made both shots from the line to give the Cardinal a 71-70 lead with 1:10 to go.

As the game entered its final minute, Celestine was fouled, and hit his two from the line to put the Bears back ahead, 72-71. Carlyle missed a layup for Stanford, and Cone missed a three for Cal.

It was still 72-71 Bears with just 10 seconds left, and that’s when Raynaud turned the ball over. The Cardinal had no choice, but to foul Celestine, who hit one of two from the line to make it 73-71. 

Stanford got the ball up court in the final seconds, but after a missed layup by Carlyle, and a missed jumper by Raynaud, the Bears had won another thriller.

Blown leads, epic comebacks and wild out-of-control seesaw games have been the theme for Cal all season long, and tonight was no different. Stanford appeared to take control of the game on several occasions, but each time, the Bears came back. and were able to eventually hold on at the end.

The Bears improve to 8-12 on the season, and 4-5 in Pac-12 play. They will now head to the great state of Arizona for a quick two-game road trip. It will start Thursday night at 5:30 p.m., against the ninth-ranked Arizona Wildcats at the McKale Center in Tucson. The Bears will follow that up with a noon affair against the Arizona State Sun Devils next Saturday in Tempe.

#1 Oakland A’s owner John Fisher said after Wednesday night’s Coming out party at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas that he’s working with Bally’s and GOPI on the renderings for the Tropicana ballpark instead of just releasing the renderings for the ballpark but also for the planned resort and wants both projects on the renderings

#2 Fisher said it’s going to take time to get the drawings up and measuring the ballpark on nine acres plus how and where the resorts will be designed.

#3 As far as financing for the ballpark the stadium costs will run $1.5 billion and Fisher said he would seek funding from his family and the Las Vegas business community. What makes Fisher think he could go to each Casino owner and business owner in Vegas and put enough money to help pay off the construction cost. He’s basically looking for investors and minority owners.

#4 Fisher was also asked at the Wednesday function where they’ll play for after the 2024 season. Fisher did visit Sutter Health Park in Sacramento and Smith’s Ballpark in Salt Lake City last week saying, “We haven’t made a choice but hope to do soon.”

#5 Fisher did say that Summerlin is a terrific asset and a great place and it’s the Oakland A’s triple A affiliate home of the Aviators. No one from the players association has not said anything yet about it’s members playing in a minor league park but it’s been said the players are not in favor of playing in a minor league park.

#1 Jeremiah, the Sacramento Kings Domantas Sabonis knew there wasn’t very much time left with 22 seconds remaining in the game where he slammed dunk the game winning score to edge the Golden State Warriors 134-133 at the Chase Center on Thursday night.

#2 In the ensuing attempt at staying ahead Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry lost control of the basketball for a turnover that allowed the Kings to get possession of the ball and Sabonis got the throw down for the winner. The Kings took advantage of the turnover at a crucial time.

#3 Jeremiah in these last two games the Kings Harrison Barnes has been on fire he led in scoring on Monday night against the Atlanta Hawks and likewise against Golden State on Thursday night. While teams were keying in on De’Aaron Fox it gave Barnes plenty of opportunities to get the open shot.

#4 Barnes said of the Warriors they have a high powered offense and that the Kings have to sacrifice in order in to win games.

#5 Kings are in Dallas on Saturday night the Mavericks are playing .,500 ball winning five of their last ten games. The Suns clobbered the Mavericks in their last game 132-109, Jeremiah how do you see things shaping up between the Kings and Mavericks on Saturday in Dallas.

Sacramento Kings post game wrap: Kings Hold Off Golden State In Another Wild Finish 134-133

In a wild finish the Sacramento Kings (25-18) edged the Golden State Warriors (19-23) in their fourth matchup this season 134-133. Harrison Barnes had a career high 39 points hitting 7 threes. This game was a real nail biter with Sacramento leading for most of it.

The Kings came out with incredible energy in the opening quarter leading after the first 12 minutes 40-32. Sacramento had taken an 11 point lead at one time in the first quarter. The Warriors really got on track in the second quarter and as this game played on the three’s were flying. 

The combined total from beyond the arc was 25 in an electric first half of basketball. After two quarters, the Kings had slim 75-72 lead. The Warriors did win the second quarter 40-35.

Barnes was having a monster game scoring 20 points in the first half which included four three’s. De’Aaron Fox also had a great start with 16 points. It would be a challenging second half.

 The Warriors are still playing off the emotion of this last week and they will be a real challenge. The Kings would have to continue to play hard and make as many stops as possible and continue to protect the ball. 

Sacramento only had four turnovers in the first half. The Kings were having great success in the paint and needed to take that into the third quarter. The biggest concern for Sacramento was Domantas Sabonis with three personals in the first half. 

Barnes who is having another terrific game and Keegan Murray both had no personal fouls. The Warriors would not doubt try to get Sabonis out of the game in the second half which would be a real blow for Sacramento. They would be walking a fine line in the second half.

The third quarter started out poorly for the Kings when Fox committed personal foul number three and Sacramento was flirting with disaster with their two best players in deep foul trouble. The Kings really topped it off when Kevin Huerter committed his fourth foul and winning this game might become awfully difficult.  

The Kings continued to hold onto the lead through out most of the third quarter although in the later minutes of the quarter the game was tied several times but Sacramento continued to hang onto the lead. 

With 11 seconds left in the third quarter Klay Thompson tied up the game 101-101. Barnes hit a three with 1.1 left on the game clock giving the Kings a 104-101 lead after three quarters. Barnes had 32 points through three quarters.

 It would all come down to the fourth quarter in a wild game. 35 threes were hit between these two teams after three quarters in some offensive fireworks.

In year 12 of his career, Harrison Barnes was nearing a career best. With under four minutes left in the game the Kings had a 128-121 lead and this was officially a clutch game for both teams. 

Sacramento would need their clutch player from the 2022-23 season to close this game out. Every single starter had not only double digits but they had hit 17 combined long balls. With the clock at 47 seconds the Warriors took a one-point lead 133-132. 

The Kings took back the lead 134-133 with 22 seconds left in this game. This was a wild finish with a Warrior turnover and the final was 134-133 in favor of Sacramento.

The Kings fought hard the entire game. It was a solid offensive game for the Kings, with only ten turnovers. Harrison Barnes, after 12 years in the league, scored a career high with 39 points and 7 threes.

He left the Warriors seven years ago and one would query “has he forgotten”? By the looks of tonight’s game there’s your answer. He was electric tonight. ”When the ball comes to you shoot with confidence,” said Barnes after the game. ”The important thing was to keep an aggressive mentality,” he went on to say. He sure displayed confidence in this one.  

Fox had 29 points and despite five personals Domantas Sabonis came away with 18 points and eight rebounds with 13 assists. This is the second game that the Kings beat Golden State by a single point. Sacramento won back in November 124-123

Post game notes: Thursday night the Kings defeated the Warriors at Chase Center. The Warriors were coming off an emotional win Wednesday night beating the Hawks at Chase 134-112. The Kings also beat the Hawks last Sunday 122-107 so it was a Northern California beat down of Atlanta this week.

Saturday night the Kings will play the Dallas Mavericks on the road. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

  

 

Golden State Warriors game wrap: Warriors lose thriller by one-point to Kings 134-133 at Chase Center

The Golden State Warriors scored 133 points against the visiting Sacramento Kings at the Chase Center Thursday night. Unfortunately for the Warriors, the Kings scored 134 to win the game by one point, 134-133.

This was the third game between the two teams that was decided by a single point. The teams split the four-game season series at two apiece. The game was a definite nail-biter and was a thriller to the end. The Warriors had a chance to win.

With 15 seconds left on the clock, all the Warriors needed was a two-point bucket to win. The Kings’ defense rose to the occasion. They stopped Warriors guard Stephen Curry and Jonathan Kuminga to preserve the win for Sacramento.

The Kings, behind former Warrior Harrison Barnes, won the first quarter 40-32. The Warriors got their offense going in the second quarter and finished the first half trailing by three, 75-72. Curry knocked down five three-pointers in the first half and finished with 18 points.

Barnes made four threes and recorded 20 points in the first 24 minutes of play. Sacramento made 13 threes in the first half, while the Warriors knocked down 12. Kuminga and Dario Saric each had 14.

The second half was a nip-and-tuck affair. Whenever the Warriors came close to taking the lead, the Kings held the Warriors at bay. The Kings’ biggest lead in the quarter was seven points, 91-84.

Could the Warrior defense make a stop to win the game? The answer was no. The Kings went ahead 134-133 with 15 seconds left. The Warriors did not take a timeout to inbound the ball in the forecourt. The Kings’ defense found a way to force Curry to make a turnover. The game was over.

Game Notes: the Warriors are now 19-23 with the loss. The Kings improved to 25-18.

The Warriors had five players in double-figures. Kuminga had a career-high 31 points. Curry led the Warriors with 33. Klay Thompson had 16, Andrew Wiggins had 17, and Saric had 14. The Warriors made 19 threes.

All five Kings’ starters were in double figures. Barnes had a career-high 39 points, and Barnes connected on seven threes. Fox finished with 29, Domantas Sabonis had a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds, Keegan Murray 14, Kevin Huerter 12, and Davion Mitchell 10.
