#1 The Stanford Cardinal opened up their second road trip in ACC competition against the Wake Forest Deacon Deamons at Lawrence Joel Veteran Memorial Coliseum with a 80-67 loss. The Cardinal now drop their record to 11-6 and are 3-3 in the ACC.

#2 Oziyah Sellers led Stanford in scoring with 16 points and Jaylen Blakes scored 15 points, seven assists. The Cardinal Maxime Raynaud and Ryan Agarwal had 14 points each. Raynaud was able to rebound 11 times and is first in the NCAA with double doubles.

#3 What a year Raynaud is having he now has 1265 in career points which moves him up on the list surpassing Don Griffin of 1969 and Anthony Goods of 2009. Raynaud tied Chris Hernandez of 2006 tying him for 29th on the all time Stanford list.

#4 The Cardinal are now 1-1 against the Deacon Demons in their second meeting in school history. The last time they met in 1997 Stanford defeated Wake Forest in their first ever meeting.

#5 Stanford now heads to UNC to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels. UNC is 12-6 and are coming off a win over the Cal Bears on Wednesday night 79-53. UNC is on a four game win streak and tip off against Stanford Sat Jan 18 at 11:15 am PST. Michael how do you see this game?

Utah HC Squanders Strong Start In 5-3 Loss To Canadiens

SALT LAKE CITY–Utah’s home woes continue as 2-1 first period lead dissolves into 5-3 deficit against Montreal.

In the classic movie The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy clicks the heels of her ruby slippers three times while repeating the words, “There’s no place like home,” to be magically transported back to her family and loved ones in Kansas. For the Utah Hockey Club this season, they may prefer to click the heels of their skates while saying, “There’s no place like the road.”

For the first period of Tuesday night’s matchup against the Montreal Canadiens, Utah was clicking on all cylinders, taking an early lead on goals by recently recalled forward Josh Doan, a 5-on-3 power play goal, and center Nick Bjugstad. Utah overpowered the Canadiens on every front, outshooting Montreal 14-3 while finishing the opening frame with a 2-1 lead.

The second period was all Canadiens on the score sheet, as Patrick Laine and Kirby Dach each lit the lamp to give Montreal a 3-2 advantage heading into the final period of play.

Just three minutes into the third period, Utah center Logan Cooley energized the Delta Center with his 12th goal of the season, assisted by Nick Schmaltz and captain Clayton Keller to even things up at 3-3.

Canadiens winger Cole Caufield recaptured the lead for Montreal a few minutes later with his 24th goal of the season, but Utah continued to apply pressure to keep the game within reach.

Unfortunately for Utah, the struggles at home continued as Kirby Dach put the game away with his second goal of the night with just a few minutes remaining, for a final score of 5-3.

This was Utah’s 6th home loss over their past 7 games in Salt Lake City where they have won just 6 of 20 games so far this season as opposed to winning 12 of 23 on the road.

Defenseman John Marino, who was plus-one in the contest, made his Utah debut in his first game returning from injury. After the game, Marino talked about his first game in a Utah sweater. “Took a couple of shifts to get your legs under you and the rhythm and flow of the game with all the penalties and stuff, taking shifts off, but anything to step in the right direction.” Marino also addressed the challenge of finding chemistry with his new teammates. “It’s tough, missing out on training camp and everything. But you’re able to come in, have a couple of practices with everyone, be around the group as much as you can. (The) staff and organization, everyone in the room has been great helping me, so it’s just a learning process.”

Head coach André Tourigny gave his take on the game. “It’s frustrating. I think we played a really good first period, really good start. I liked our cohesion offensively in the first period. I didn’t like our second period, starting with getting in the box. When we came back from New Years, we talked about management of the second period, and we had, as a team, we struggled in the second period, and then the following three games we were excellent in the second period. We played our game the right way. We had the right mindset. When I say played our game the right way, we played more precise. We played really fast. And the opponent, we did not allow them to change. We were intense without the puck, so we didn’t have time and space, so we were able to get the energy on our side all the time, we had shot volume, and so on and so forth. Today we arrived in the second period, and we were so good in the first. I don’t know for which reason we thought the second period will not be a fight or whatever, I don’t know. Start getting the pucks right from the beginning, that confident rhythm. Even in the first, you know, they were going out there on the other side, there’s a few guys who had a tough time to get their rhythm, because it’s tough to get on the rhythm on your ice time and your next shift. So, long story short, it built up in the second period, and instead to recover, we got worse. And that was the game.”

Tourigny didn’t pull punches talking about the second period. “There’s no reason to have excuses. We had a great first period; you need to show up in the second. You know on the other side that they will push. They’re one of the best teams in the NHL in the last 12 games or so. They have two or three losses in their last 12 games. What do you expect? For 60 minutes, roll them over and they won’t push back? No, they will push back. You get three or four power plays in the first period, a 5-on-3. It’s time for all of us, coaches and players, to take our responsibility. We need to be better than that. That’s what I think.”

Utah hopes to reverse their home fortunes on Thursday at 7:00pm MST when they play host to the New York Rangers.

SJSU hands New Mexico their first conference loss in 71-70 win

SAN JOSE- In a game full of short leads, San Jose State extends their win streak to 2 and gives the New Mexico Lobos their first conference loss of the season.

Coming into tonight’s game, HC Tim Miles knew it was going to be a good matchup given the knowledge of the team and what they can bring to the table. “Excellent night for San Jose State, beat a high high quality opponent in a game where we weren’t at our best early.”

In quite a physical game by both sides, San Jose came out on top. Both teams had fouls in the double digits, New Mexico with 14 and San Jose with 15. “Yeah they were a physical team, but we just executed and did what we did and just played our game” said Latrell Davis.

Latrell Davis made two important shots that heavily contributed to the Spartans win tonight. He had a buzzer beater three to end the first half and a late layup in the second to put the Spartans ahead. “I thought I missed it but it went in and I was like yes!” said Latrell Davis. Davis put up 11 points with 2 assists.

Jermaine Washington had a great game tonight on both sides, defensively and offensively. Washington put up 13 points, making three 3’s, with a plus 18. Being only a freshman, this game was a step in the right direction for him “Just seeing him be able to play both sides of the floor, really exciting for him and I think he’s going to be a hell of a player next year.” said teammate Josh Uduje.

A win like this is crucial for San Jose State. Before tonight’s game, they struggled to close out and win those close games but they proved that they’re capable of it. “It’s so important for them to keep their enthusiasm up, right? Every game has been tough.” said HC Tim Miles.

The Spartans will be back in action on Saturday January 18th when they will travel to Nevada to take on the Wolfpack.

G League action: Stars slip by Kings in narrow win 121-117 at the Maverik Center

The Stockton Kings were back on the road on Tuesday night, as they visited the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah to take on the Salt Lake City Stars.

Starting the night, the Kings found themselves first in the Western Conference. They were hoping to continue building off of their 6-1 start to the season, while the Stars were looking to move above .500. Ultimately, the Stars would be on the winning end of things as they’d narrowly win, 121-117.

Stockton got off to an early lead, ending the first quarter up 26-22, however Salt Lake City bounced back with a strong second quarter. They dropped 37 points in the second frame, making it a 59-54 lead for the home team at halftime.

The second half would mirror the first. The Kings had a strong third quarter and after scoring 33 points in the third, they held a lead going into the final frame. They’d be unable to contain the Stars’ offense in the fourth quarter though, and Salt Lake City would walk away with a 121-117 win.

Mason Jones had a great individual performance for Stockton, scoring 30 points with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Terry Taylor also had a strong night, going 22/5/5 for the Kings.

Chasson Randle was +17 on the night, meaning he was having a massively positive impact for the Kings, as they weren’t giving up many baskets with him on the floor.

Salt Lake City had two standouts on the night, with Oscar Tshiebwe scoring 30 and grabbing 22 boards while Elijah Harkless dropped 29 points. The most impressive thing for Tahiebwe was the fact that 10 of his rebounds were offensive, generating more offense for his team which ultimately became the difference between a win and a loss.

Despite Tahiebwe’s spectacular performance on the glass, his teammates didn’t help him out much and the Stars finished with just two more rebounds than the Kings.

Due to the loss, the Kings will now trail the Santa Cruz Warriors at the top of the West. They’ll look to get revenge on Thursday, when they visit the Stars once again. After that, the Kings will have one of their most important games of the season as they’ll visit the team at the top of the conference, Santa Cruz.

Kings Winning Streak Comes to an End at the Hands of the Milwaukee Bucks Losing 130-115

The Milwaukee Bucks (20-17) controlled the opening quarter leading the Sacramento Kings(20-19) 47-26 after the first 12 minutes of play in tonight’s matchup. The Kings were able to match the Bucks in the second and third quarters but could not get on top of Milwaukee playing from behind all night.

The Kings cut a 28 point deficit to 11 in the fourth quarter but that was as close as they would get. There would be no eighth win in a row for Sacramento. The final was 130-115 in favor of the Bucks.

Game recap: The first quarter was not the start that the Kings were looking for. The first six minutes of the first quarter was a close one but then the Bucks began to make a move extending a slim lead into a monster lead.

After the first 12 minutes of play, the Bucks had established a 47-26 lead. It was a huge lead for Milwaukee as they were leaving the Kings in the dust and Sacramento was being manhandled at every turn offensively and defensively.

The Kings started the second quarter going shot for shot with the Bucks but with 21 points to make up, shot for shot was not the answer. Mid-way through the quarter, not a single King had double digits. They were faced with a huge mountain to climb.

With a little under five minutes left in the first half, DeMar DeRozan was the first King to reach a double digit tally. The Bucks owned the paint shooting around 55% to the Kings 39%. At the half, the Bucks were cruising leading 75-54.

Milwaukee had led by as much as 28 points but the Kings cut it by as much as 12 points trailing 46-62 with 2:41 left in the half. The Bucks pushed their lead back out to 75-54 as the second quarter came to an end. The second quarter was a tie with each team scoring 28 points. Sacramento had matched the Bucks but had made absolutely no ground.

Milwaukee had controlled the paint through the two opening quarters scoring 34 points to the Kings 18. Both teams committed only four turnovers apiece so good ball protection on both sides. The poor second half of the first quarter was a killer for Sacramento.

They were not able to recover at all in the second quarter. They kept pace with Milwaukee but could not get on top of them. By the half the Kings had Domantas Sabonis, De’Aaron Fox and DeRozan all with double digits. The Bucks also had three starters with double figures; Giannis Antetokounmpo leading the charge with 19 points. The Sacramento Kings had a lot of work to do in the second half.

The Kings outscored the Bucks in the third quarter but only by a single point 28-27 and going into the fourth quarter, Milwaukee had a 102-82 lead. A win for Sacramento in this game was a long shot at best. An eighth win in a row was not looking very good for the Kings.

The fourth quarter got underway and at 9:42 the Kings trailed by 13 points making a bit of a run 91-104. The Sacramento run continued as the Kings pulled to within 11 points trailing 96-107 with a lot of game left.

That would be as close as Sacramento would get. They couldn’t make the stops, and they couldn’t make the shots when they needed them. The offensive excellence of the Bucks Tuesday night overwhelmed the Kings. Once again the Kings bench was quiet finishing with 17 points while the Milwaukee bench hit 41 points. The final for this game was 130-115 in favor of the Bucks.

Every starter for the Kings shot double figures with DeRozan leading the pack shooting for 28 points and six rebounds. Fox finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds, a double double. Sabonis also had a double double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Keon Ellis had 18 points and Keegan Murray shot for 11 points and 7 rebounds.

Game notes: Tuesday night the Kings took on the Bucks looking for their eighth win in a row but it was too much Giannis scoring 33 points and the Kings ended their seven game win streak. The Kings were faced with containing Antetokounmpo and Damien Lilliard a monster task.

Sacramento had most of their starting roster ready to roll in this game as they finish up this road trip. Malik Monk unfortunately did not play in Tuesday night’s game. He is dealing with a groin injury and is listed as day-to-day. The Kings will really missed him in this tough matchup. They tried to finish up this final game with a win and get a spotless road trip but it wasn’t to be.

The Kings will now return home to Golden 1 Center for a matchup with the Houston Rockets on Thursday looking to start another win streak. This will be another tough assignment for the team but they are fully capable of coming out on top. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Sharks Beat Red Wings 6-3 end 3 game skid, Wings end 7 game win streak, SJ scores 4 in third period

The San Jose Sharks defeated the Detroit Red Wings 6-3 on Tuesday. Jan Rutta, Nico Sturm, William Eklund, Mikael Granlund, Tyler Toffoli and Mario Ferraro scored for the Sharks. Alexandar Georgiev made 25 saves for the win. Vladimir Tarasenko and Lucas Raymond scored for the Red Wings. Ville Husso made 18 saves in the loss.

The Sharks have given up the lead in the third period in several recent games. After the game, Jan Rutta said: “We’ve been in this situation more than a few times this year. So, we got the job done today. Hopefully that’s just a sign of us taking steps in the right direction and that when we have the lead we can play like tonight.”

Sharks Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky talked about Georgiev’s performance in the win: “He was tracking pucks, he was locked in, made some huge saves for us, so… You can see his game it’s been trending in the right direction. So happy that he got rewarded tonight with the win for sure.”

The Sharks took an early lead with a goal from Jan Rutta at 1:45. Alexander Wennberg stole the puck away from Detroit below the goal line, then centered it for Will Smith. Smith took the shot and then caught his own rebound. He passed it up to Rutta above the faceoff circles. Rutta took the shot from high in the slot through some traffic. Assists went to Smith and Wennberg.

The Sharks added to their lead with a short-handed goal at 17:41. William Eklund broke away into the neutral zone then lost the puck before he got to the Detroit blue line. He gathered the puck back up and passed it to Nico Sturm on the blue line. Sturm carried the puck in and took the shot from just above the goal line. Assists went to Eklund and Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

The Sharks were badly outshot in the first period, 12-6 by the Red Wings. The Sharks took the only first period penalty. Their penalty kill allowed two shots but also took two shots and scored once.

Vladimir Tarasenko got the Red Wings on the board at 1:28 of the second period, catching a rebound from Simon Edvinsson’s shot for a snap shot. Assists went to Edvinsson and Jonatan Berggren.

The Sharks outshot the Red Wings in the second, 9-6. The Sharks also took the only second period penalty. The penalty kill got one short handed shot and did not allow any shots against.

William Eklund made it 3-1 28 seconds into the third period. Eklund passed the puck behind the net to Celebrini, who then passed it back through the blue paint to Eklund, who knocked it into the net. Celebrini and Tyler Toffoli got the assists.

Tarasenko trimmed the Sharks’ lead again, with his second of the night. Erik Gustafsson shot the puck off the backboards so that it centered just as Tarasenko arrived at the net to shoot it in. Gustafsson and Joe Veleno got the assists.

The Sharks took back their two goal lead at 7:43 with a power play goal. Mikael Granlund caught a pass from Macklin Celebrini at the top of the faceoff circle. Granlund carried the puck almost past the net before scoring with a backhand shot.

Lucas Raymond got one back for Detroit at 9:56 with a wrist shot. Going right to the net after a faceoff, he caught the pass from faceoff winner Dylan Larkin.

Tyler Toffoli made it 5-3 at 10:57. William Eklund gathered up a loose puck in front of the net and passed it ahead to Toffoli, who shot it in from a bad angle.

Mario Ferraro scored an empty net goal at 18:22 with a shot from just above the Sharks’ goal line.

The shots were almost even at 10-9 Sharks in the third period. The Red Wings took their first penalty of the game and the only one called in the third. The Sharks power play got two shots on goal and scored.

The Sharks next play on Thursday at 4:00 PM PT in Columbus against the Blue Jackets.

#4 Sasaki is another big signing possibility that has passed up the Giants. The Giants over the last two seasons missed signing in 2024 the likes of Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, and Shohei Ohtani. For 2025 the Giants so far have missed out on the following free agent signings Juan Soto, Ha Seong Kim, and Corbin Burnes. They managed to sign Willy Adames and Justin Verlander. The Giants last Thursday avoided going to arbitration with LaMonte Wade Jr, and relivers Camilo Doval and Tyler Rogers. Are there a number of big name free agents avoiding San Francisco for specific reasons based on how the team has been a revolving door for managers, general managers, and team president changes and how CEO Larry Baer and team managing partner Greg Johnson who have final say have not been able to sign high profile players?

#5 The Seattle Mariners agreed to a one year deal with infielder Donovan Solano for $3.5 million. Also Solano could earn up to $1 million for plate appearances that ramp up to $200,00 for at bats totaling 300, 350, 400, 450, and 500. Solano hit .286, eight home runs, and 35 RBIs in 96 games with the San Diego Padres.

#1 How surprised were you the Houston Texans beat the Los Angeles Chargers 32-12 in the AFC Wild Card on Sat Jan 18th in a game that wasn’t even close. The Texans quarterback CJ Stroud went 22-33, 282 yards, and one touchdown and one interception. How surprising was it that the Texans were able to beat the Chargers led by Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh?

#2 It was a close one in the NFC Wild Card Game on Sunday Jan 12 as the Washington Commanders edged the Tampa Bay Bucs 23-20. Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels 24-35, 268 yards, and two touchdowns.

#5 The Buffalo Bills crushed the Denver Broncos 31-7 in the AFC Wild Card game Sun Jan 12th. The Bills quarterback Josh Allen went 20-26, 272 yards and two touchdowns.

#6 The Los Angeles Rams took care of business in the NFC Wild Card game beating the Minnesota Vikings 27-9 on Monday Jan 13th. Rams quarterback Matt Stafford went 19-27 for 209 yards and two touchdowns.

#1 The San Jose Barracuda earned a point in their overtime loss to the Bakersfield Condors 5-4 at Mechanics Bank in Bakersfield on Saturday night.

#2 The Barracuda Brandon Coe scored his second goal of the season at 18:32 with assists from Joey Keane and Thomas Bordeleau to take a 1-0 lead.

#3 All the scoring took place in the second period with the Condors Jayden Grubbe scoring at 3:45, the Barracuda would answer back with three goals from Anthony Vincent at 11:02, Scott Sabourin at 11:44, and Ethan Cardwell at 16:20. with the score 3-2 the Condors would make it 4-2 when Conner Carrick at 19:25 scored.

#4 In the third period the Condors would score two unanswered goals to force overtime when Cameron Wright scored at 6:32 and at 7:28 Drake Caggiula to make it 4-4. In overtime at 2:45 the Condors Carrick scored the game winning goal for the 5-4 victory.

#5 The Barracuda are back in British Columbia for a battle with the Abbottsford Canucks Sat Jan 18th a 7:00pm PST puck drop its the first of a two game series.
