SAN JOSE–The San Jose Barracuda made it really count in the extra stanza with a 5-4 win over the San Diego Gulls at Tech CU on Sunday afternoon.

Stian Solberg scored the first goal of the game, scoring his second goal of the season at 8:43 of the first period. Nathan Gaucher quickly fed off of that, scoring his first of the season less than a minute later. San Jose cut into that lead, making it 2-1 when the newly named Jimmy Huntington got things started.

Ethan Cardwell recorded the lone assist. San Jose tied the game at 2-2 when Filip Bystedt scored his first goal of the season. Leo Sahlin-Wallenius recorded the primary assist while Tye Felhaber recorded the secondary assist.

Roger McQueen regained the San Diego lead at 3-2, scoring his second goal of the season. Sean Farrell recorded the primary assist while Jett Woo recorded the secondary assist. Anton Wahlberg extended that lead to 4-2 for his first goal of the season.

Roman Kinal with the primary assist and Nathan Gaucher with the secondary assist. Andre Gasseau scored his first goal of the season to make it 4-3. Ethan Cardwell recorded the primary assist and Eric Pohlkamp recorded the secondary assist.

Filip Bystedt tied the game at 4-4 for his second goal of the season. Tye Felhaber recorded the primary assist while Ethan Cardwell recorded the secondary assist.

Regulation wasn’t enough as the game went into overtime. With two minutes left, Roland McKeown scored his first in San Jose to win it 5-4.

After the first period, San Jose outshot San Diego 13-10. After the second period, San Diego outshot San Jose 12-10 in the third period, both teams has nine a piece. To end the game, San Jose outshot San Diego 33 to 32.

Both teams had opportunies to score on the powerplay. San Diego went 0/2 while San Jose went 1/3.

Sunday night’s goalie matchup was Matt Davis for San Jose vs Damian Clara for San Diego. Recording Sunday’s win, Davis made 28 saves on 33 shots. Recording today’s loss, Clara made 28 saves on 33 shots.

For 30 years, since its founding in 1996, the WNBA operated in obscurity, with very low television ratings and financial struggles. Then, in 2024, something happened that completely changed the league for the better. The Indiana Fever #1 pick was Caitlin Clark.

Clark has become the league’s most famous player and has also become the most controversial; she is white, and the WNBA is no more than 15% white.

Although many good players increased the league’s popularity before Caitlin Clark arrived, she was the catalyst that pushed the WNBA over the top, greatly increasing attendance and television ratings and boosting overall revenue that benefits players.

Caitlin Clark and her number 22 jersey for the Indiana Fever are the most popular and best-selling in the WNBA. Her #22 is the best seller ever in the women’s league, similar to what Michael Jordan’s #23 did with the Chicago Bulls in the NBA. Nearly the entire WNBA is jealous of Caitlin Clark and trying to destroy her, said Ben Daniel Podcast TV.

The average WNBA player salary is about $583,800 to $600,000, thanks to the historic 2026 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Before Caitlin Clark arrived, the average salary was $100,000 or less, as many players held second jobs. While $100,000 is a “comfortable” living in places like Indiana, it is not in New York, California, or other parts of the country.

The WNBA has a significantly larger LGBTQ+ fan base than most other professional sports leagues. The league has embraced this demographic and made it part of its identity.

Highly rated ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith frequently called Caitlin Clark a “cash cow” and audience driver for the WNBA.

So why is Caitlin Clark a double-edged sword? Obviously, she has done great for women’s basketball and for the once-struggling league, but at the same time, there is jealousy among players, as well as racism and other ugly stuff that surfaces in the territory brought by great financial success. The money into the WNBA has been good, but along with it brought other stuff, I would say its like “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”.

Chernyshov’s Late Winner Lifts Sharks Past Kings in Dramatic 5-4 Victory

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Sharks rallied past the Los Angeles Kings 5-4 on Saturday at SAP Center, overcoming a late third-period comeback before Igor Chernyshov scored the game-winning goal, with an assist from Macklin Celebrini, to secure a dramatic divisional victory.

The Sharks hosted the Kings in the first of four divisional matchups this season, looking to build on their momentum and withstand the pressure of a Los Angeles team that pushed them to the limit.

The opening period featured a relatively even exchange of chances, but San Jose struggled to establish a consistent forecheck and generate sustained offensive pressure. Los Angeles capitalized on the Sharks’ defensive lapses to open the scoring.

Veteran forward Adrian Kempe gave the Kings a 1-0 lead on the power play, finishing a one-timer off a pass from Artemi Panarin along the wing. Los Angeles carried that advantage into the first intermission.

San Jose responded with a stronger second period, displaying improved chemistry, puck movement and offensive execution while tightening up defensively.

The Sharks tied the game when Macklin Celebrini delivered a pass from the left wing to Ivar Stenberg, whose shot created a rebound that Tyler Toffoli buried past the goaltender to make it 1-1.

San Jose continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone, and Kiefer Sherwood gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead after recovering a loose puck in front of the net and finishing the opportunity.

The Sharks extended their advantage with a well-executed tic-tac-toe passing sequence. Nolan Allan finished the play with a tap-in goal, assisted by Michael Misa and Igor Chernyshov, putting San Jose ahead 3-1.

Los Angeles answered on the power play as Quinton Byfield generated an impressive offensive sequence, keeping the Sharks under pressure in their own zone before finding the back of the net. Byfield’s goal cut the deficit to 3-2 heading into the second intermission.

San Jose entered the third period looking to protect its lead and maintain its offensive momentum. Chernyshov, who had already recorded an assist, delivered another scoring play after the Sharks moved the puck out of their defensive zone and into the neutral zone.

Chernyshov found himself on a two-on-one rush and capitalized on the odd-man opportunity, beating the goaltender to extend San Jose’s lead to 4-2.

However, the Kings refused to back down, taking control of the offensive momentum and mounting a late comeback. Erik Jaula brought Los Angeles within one before Panarin continued to make an immediate impact with his new team, scoring the equalizer to tie the game at 4-4 in the closing minutes.

Los Angeles generated several dangerous scoring chances as it pushed for the go-ahead goal, but Sharks goaltender Yaroslav delivered a series of clutch saves to keep San Jose in contention.

As the game appeared headed toward overtime, the Sharks once again delivered late-game drama. Chernyshov scored the decisive goal off an assist from Celebrini, securing a 5-4 victory and sending the SAP Center crowd into celebration.

The win moved San Jose to a 2-0 record in the standings, as the Sharks continued to demonstrate their resilience in a tightly contested Pacific Division matchup.

SAN JOSE–It was not the ideal home opener at Tech CU for the San Jose Barracuda as they got trounced by the San Diego Gulls in the first game in San Jose 5-1.

San Diego opened the scoring, 15:39 into the second period. James Hablin scored his first of the year, Stian Solberg recording the primary assist while Nico Myatovic recorded the secondary assist. San Diego extended that lead to 2-0 when they took advantage of their powerplay opportunity. Matthew Phillips notched his first of the year, Stian Solberg recording his second assist of the night.

San Diego extended that 2-0 lead even further to 3-0. They scored their second powerplay goal of the night, Roger McQueen scoring his first of the season. Former Barracuda Ryan Carpenter recorded the primary assist while Sean Farrell recorded the secondary assist. San Diego did not let the foot off the pedal, Nico Mytatovic scored his first of the season. Matthew Phillips recorded the primary assist while James Hamblin recorded the secondary assist.

San Jose avoided the shutout with Ethan Cardwell scoring his first of the season. Anthony Vincent recording the primary assist while goalie Eric Comrie recorded the secondary. Right after, San Diego sealed the win scoring an empty-netter, Stian Solberg scoring his first of the season.

After the first period, San Diego outshot San Jose sixteen to five. After the second period, shots were nine a piece. After the third period, San Jose outshot San Diego sixteen to eight. To end the game San Diego outshot San Jose 33 to 30.

Both teams Saturday night had opportunities to shine in their speciality teams but only San Diego was able to capitalize. San Jose went 0/1on the powerplay while San Diego went 2/4.

Saturday night’s goalie matchup was Eric Comrie for San Jose vs former Barracuda Laurent Brossoit. Recording Saturday night’s win, Laurent Brossoit made 29 saves 30 on shots. Recording tonights loss, Eric Comrie 28 made 32 saves on shots.

Rebels’ Scoring Frenzy Finds California on Losing End of a 39-31 Final

Saturday afternoon, the California Bears (2-3) matched up with the the UNLV Rebels (3-2). The game was played in the fully enclosed climate controlled Allegiant Stadium keeping fans happy and comfortable escaping the 95 degree temperatures which is relatively cool for Las Vegas. This will be the final non-conference game of the season for Cal.

It was a great start for the Bears in the opening quarter. Californis was first up on the scoreboard taking a 7-0 lead. The Rebels tied up the game 7-7 going into the second quarter. The Rebels took the lead in the second quarter 14-7.

Las Vegas would continue to push their lead hitting a 31-yard field goal taking a 17-7 lead. They would close out the second quarter scoring their third touchdown of the day taking a 24-7 lead into the third quarter. This game went loco in the third quarter with Cal going on a wild ride.

The Bears scored a touchdown followed by a successful two-point conversion to open the second half. With the score now 24-15 Cal forced a turnover on the next drive finishing it with a field goal and the Bears inched closer to Las Vegas 24-18 in a one-score game.

Cal scored in the early minutes of the fourth quarter taking their first lead since the first quarter 25-24. Las Vegas answered back scoring extending their lead to 32-25. Las Vegas quarterback Arnold went on to score his second rushing touchdown of the day and the Rebels had a 39-25 lead. With little time left on the clock the Bears kept playing tough scoring a touchdown but unsuccessfully going for the two-point conversion. The final score in a wild one was in favor of the Rebels 39-31

GAME RECAP
The Bears were first up on the scoreboard taking a 7-0 lead at 11:30 in the first quarter. Quarterback Jason-Keawe Sagapolutele threw a bomb for 91 yards to Taimaine Percell for the touchdown and the early lead. At 5:31 the Rebels would tie up the game when quarterback Jackson Arnold completed a 70-yard pass to Kayden McGee for the touchdown. It had been an electric showing through the air for both quarterbacks in the first quarter.

Las Vegas broke the tie in the second quarter scoring early at 11:18. Arnold had his second touchdown of the day this score a 55-yard rush taking a 14-7 lead. When it looked as if the Bears had tied up this game mid-way through the second quarter, Cal was called for holding putting an end to an impressive drive.

The Bears were forced to attempt a 51-yard field goal which failed and the score remained 14-7 in favor of UNLV. After the opening touchdown, California began to stumble. In the closing minutes of the second quarter Las Vegas not only hit a 31-yard field goal for a 17-7 lead but with 51 seconds left on the clock Arnold continued the beautiful rhythmn he had started to play with.

He completed a 36 yard pass to Taz Reddicks and the Rebels took a 24-7 lead into the locker room at the half. The Bears would have the ball to start the second half. In the closing minutes of the half Cal quarterback Sagapolutele took a late hit and was forced to leave the game. Jackson Brousseau took over to finish the second quarter.

Mid-way through the third quarter Cal finally got something going. They were able to force the Rebels to punt and began their drive on their own 42-yard-line at 5:43. Brosseau found Alonzo Esparza for 63 yards, the touchdown and a successful two-point conversion and the Bears now trailed 15-24 with a lot of time left in the game.

This game took a shocking turn when at 4:32 the Bears forced a turnover and began operaging at the Rebels 16-yard-line. Again another penalty for Cal backing the ball up to the 28-yard-line. The Bears got a little closer but were unable to get a first down.

They successfully kicked the field goal and the score was 24-18 in favor of Las Vegas. This game had not yet reached the fourth quarter and the Bears were nipping at the Rebel’s heels in this one-score game. It had been a crazy momentum turnaround. In the closing minutes of the third quarter Cal again held the Rebels taking possession.

As the fourth quarter got underway Cal sacked Arnold for an 11 yard lpss and the Bears took possession inside Rebel territory. California continued to advance the ball getting inside the ten-yard-line via a holding penalty. Ashton Emory rushed for 7-yards and the touchdown; Cal taking their first lead 25-24 since the first quarter. The Bears had scored 18 unanswered points.

A second targeting call in this game was called this one on Cal’s Daniel Harris and he was ejected leaving the Cal defense vunerable. Cal was now 3 players down defensively. Las Vegas went on to score hitting a wide-open Keyan Burnett catching his first touchdown of the season.

Las Vegas went for the conversion with Arnold successful and UNLV had a 32-25 lead with 5:42 left in the game. The Bears Miles Davis very nearly scored on the ensuing possession when he stepped out of bounds near the 50-line yard line. The Rebels defense held Cal and took possession moving downfield aided by Cal’s 14th penalty of the game.

Arnold would score his second rushing touchdown of the day and the Rebels had errupted leading 39-25. The Bears would drive downfield in their next drive going for it on fourth and 12 and succeeding leading to another touchdown. Ian Strong caught his first touchdown of the season in the endzone, the two-point attempt failed and that was the ball game with Las Vegas coming away with the win 39-31 in an abolute marathon.

GAME NOTES

It was a banner day for UNLV quarterback Jackson Arnold throwing for 172 yards and three touchdowns, rushing for two. Cal’s quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele was on his way to a productive afternoong before leaving the game just before the first half came to an end.

He suffered a rough hit to the head and remained out for the rest of the game. Bears quarterback Jackson Brousseau came in for Sagapolutele and came away with some nice numbers. He finished with 200 passing yards and two touchdowns.

What probably hurt Cal the most were the plethora of penalties. Fifteen penalties resulted in 152 yards which extended or disrupted drives. UNLV only had 7 penalties for 67 yards. Cal was penalized more than twice as many times as UNLV. If Cal can clean just this one thing up, things could go very well going forward for the Bears. They made an amazing attempt at a comeback.

Next up for California will be the Virginia Tech Hokies next Saturday October 10th at California Memorial Stadium. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 12:30 PM.

Penalties had marred the Bears in this game. They average just under 8 penalties per game and in this game it cost them a touchdown.

Macklin Celebrini, the 20-year-old center for the San José Sharks, is the youngest captain in team history and the youngest in the NHL. On July 29, 2026, Macklin Celebrini also signed the largest-ever contract in San José Sharks history: a five-year extension for $94 million, averaging $18.8 million per season. A contract that runs from the 2027-28 season to the 2031-32 season.

“I think five was just the right number. Just all different factors with where our team is going and having that flexibility. We’re all really excited with where we’re going and what we’re building. So just kind of keeping a little bit more flexibility for everyone. It’s not really a bad thing,” said the young captain of Los Tiburones de San José after signing the historic contract.

The Celebrini era has just begun, and San José Sharks fans are as excited as ever in their 35-year history. As Sports Anchor for Telemundo CH 48 San José, I covered their first-ever game; I could not forget it since it happened on October 4, 1991, my birthday, as they lost to the Vancouver Canucks 4-3.
The game took place in Cow Palace, Daly City, just blocks south of San Francisco, their temporary home for their first two seasons, 1991-93, while the San José Arena (today SAP Center) was being built. I often visited with cameraman Ignacio Navarrete at the site where the SAP was being built; we also interviewed businesses around downtown about the economic impact of an NHL franchise in the most populated city in the Bay Area, San José.

In 2016, Los Tiburones made it to the Stanley Cup, losing 4 games to 2 to the Pittsburgh Penguins and the great Sidney Crosby. San José was dressed in Teal for the occasion, a memorable one, and the first Stanley Cup I ever covered.

Today, 10 years later, the team seems poised and ready to run and go far in the postseason, perhaps back in the Stanley Cup; yes, they have that potential.

Los Tiburones On Saturday, October 31, 2026, at 1:00 PM, against the Ottawa Senators, the Sharks will celebrate their tenth annual Los Tiburones Night, honoring Hispanic Heritage in San José, home to over 30% Hispanics in the Bay Area with over 2 million Hispanics.

As a Latino, I am proud of this team’s commitment to the Hispanic community, and I am looking forward to being part of another Los Tiburones Night with this young franchise. The flavor of Fiesta, Food, Music, and Spanish broadcasting on the air!

Began as Oakland A’s Spanish-language voice in 1977 ending in 2024 (interrupted by stops with the Giants, Mariners and Angels). Voice of the Golden State Warriors from 1992 through 1998. 2010 inducted in the Bay Area Radio Hall of fame.
