Ticketmaster, the global market leader in ticketing, recently announced an extension of its official partnership with the San Francisco 49ers. Every year, more than 660,000 football fans attend games at Levi’s Stadium, and Ticketmaster will continue to serve as the official ticketing partner for the 49ers, providing both season ticket holders and single-game buyers with a safe and secure marketplace to buy, sell, and transfer verified tickets on Ticketmaster.com and 49ers.com.

“Our organizational commitment to provide our fans with an enhanced gameday experience featuring the best technology available led us to be one of the first teams to use digital ticketing technology,” said Jamie Brandt, 49ers’ Vice President of Sales and Service. “Being based in the innovation capital of the world, renewing our partnership with Ticketmaster was a given, as they have consistently delivered platforms that improve not just the fan experience, but team and venue operations, as well. We’re thrilled to continue this partnership and we look forward to even more innovations from Ticketmaster.”

In 2018, the 49ers and Ticketmaster will roll out a new Member Credential for 49ers’ season ticket holders, providing them with the most efficient ticketing experience to date using a single scannable barcode to make stadium entry easier than ever for all home games.

Since opening in 2014, more than 2.5 million fans have entered Levi’s Stadium to attend 49ers games using Ticketmaster. Under this renewed partnership, 49ers fans will continue to access verified tickets on their mobile device, download them to a digital wallet, receive personalized event notifications, and enjoy a streamlined venue entry experience.

With VenueNext, fans can receive notifications on available ticket upgrade offers, the most efficient parking and entry options at the stadium, and place food orders to be delivered to their seat.

Ticketmaster and the 49ers have been partners since 1999 and revolutionized the live experience with the opening of Levi’s Stadium in 2014.

Fans can access resources such as mobile ticketing tutorials and step-by-step screenshots at https://www.49ers.com/tickets/mobile. These resources will be important as Ticketmaster and the 49ers look to educate fans about mobile ticketing during the 2018 season.

Giants use big eighth inning to upend Diamondbacks 8-1

By Daniel Dullum

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Starting pitchers Madison Bumgarner of the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks’ Zach Grienke each threw well enough to win in a much-anticipated Thursday night pitching duel at Chase Field.

As he’s done in the past, it was Bumgarner’s bat that helped himself, and the Giants to an 8-1 win – sparked by a five-run eighth inning rally – that keeps San Francisco’s dim National League playoff hopes alive.

Bumgarner (4-4) also worked out of bases-loaded jams in the first two innings. He gave up one earned run on seven hits, struck out five, and walked three over his five innings.

“This was one of those games where it felt like we had our backs against the wall the whole time I was out there,” Bumgarner said. “Obviously, that’s not the way I wanted to draw it up and wound up working twice as hard in five innings.

“But those types of games are gratifying to keep your team in it. It seemed like (Arizona) had guys in scoring position every inning I was out there,” he added. “I just had to grind it out, make pitches and don’t give in.”

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said, “What a great job (Bumgarner) did. He did a great job of keeping them at bay in a one-run game. They had guys on base every inning and he found a way to work out of it. He didn’t give in.”

“That’s a hard night’s work – over 100 pitches in five innings. And it was hot out there (83 degrees inside), even though we were indoors.”

The Giants’ bullpen – Mark Melancon, Ray Black and Ty Blach retired 12 of the last 15 Arizona hitters over the last four innings.

“I like Ray Black’s poise out there,” Bochy said. “Here’s a young kid that gets called up and has a rough outing his first game, but he bounced back and he’s been solid. He’s pitching with a lot of confidence.”

The Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers entered Thursday’s play tied for first in the NL West, one game ahead of third-place Colorado and five ahead of the fourth-place Giants.

The Dodgers thumped Milwaukee 21-5, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Colorado Rockies 6-3, moving Los Angeles into first place, one game ahead of Arizona and five games ahead of the Giants.

Buster Posey, Gorkys Hernandez and Austin Slater each collected two hits in the Giants’ 11-hit attack.

San Francisco surged ahead to stay at 2-1 in the top of the fourth when Austin Slater doubled and scored on Bumgarner’s single to left.

“I just didn’t want to strike out,” Bumgarner said.

Hunter Pence’s pinch-hit sacrifice fly to center in the sixth drove in Slater, extending the Giants’ lead to 3-1. Slater walked, went to second on a wild pickoff throw by Diamondbacks reliever Jake Diekman and to third on a wild pitch on a walk to Steven Duggar.

San Francisco broke the game open with a five-run rally, batting around in the eighth. Posey led off with a double, followed by a one-out intentional walk to Brandon Crawford and back-to-back singles by Hernandez and Alen Hanson, chasing Arizona’s newly re-acquired reliever Brad Ziegler.

Slater added a two-RBI single that also allowed Hanson to score on an error. Duggar followed with a run-scoring single, as San Francisco sent 10 batters to the plate, finishing the inning with an 8-1 lead.

“It was good to get that big inning,” Bochy said. “We got some big hits from guys as we want to use them.”

Evan Longoria’s two-out solo home run down the left-field line – just inside the foul pole – put the Giants up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. It was Longoria’s first home run since hitting two on May 29 at Colorado.

Arizona loaded the bases against Bumgarner in the bottom of the first with a leadoff double by David Peralta, followed by walks to Paul Goldschmidt and A.J. Pollock. But Steven Souza lined out to Longoria at third for the second out and Nick Ahmed grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the threat.

“(Longoria) really saved us with that play he made,” Bochy said. “That stops a rally, and if that ball gets through, they get momentum going. And with that home run, it was good to get on the board early facing the Pitcher of the Month. Grienke’s been throwing the ball so well, and we found a way to scratch and claw to get a couple of runs.”

Bumgarner also struggled in the second inning. After Ketel Marte walked, he advanced to second when Bumgarner balked on a pickoff throw. One out later, Grienke’s line drive eluded Longoria, allowing the D-Back pitcher to reach on a single, followed by a base hit by Peralta to load the bases.

Eduardo Escobar, acquired from Minnesota before the non-waiver trade deadline, delivered a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Marte to tie the game at 1-1.

“Obviously, I don’t want them to load the bases ever, especially the first two innings of a game,” Bumgarner said. “To get out of that and keep it close there, we never lost the lead, so that was good.”

Greinke (12-6) surrendered two earned runs on four hits over six innings, with five strikeouts and one walk. David Peralta was 4-for-5 with a double for Arizona.

GIANTS JOTTINGS: LHP Madison Bumgarner celebrated his 29th birthday on Aug. 1. … Attendance at Chase Field was 22,980 for the opening game of the four-game series. … Friday’s starters are RHP Chris Stratton (8-6, 5.14) for San Francisco against LHP Patrick Corbin (7-4, 3.26).

UP NEXT: The Giants and Diamondbacks continue their series Friday night at 6:40 pm PDT.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Day four of the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic was a big day for American tennis star Venus Williams, who is commonly known as one of the all-time greats and the older sister of Serena Williams. The well-known lady made her 2018 MSVC debut at the Spartan Tennis Complex on Thursday.

Here are the results of Thursday’s matches:

Ladies Singles — Round 2
ROU’s Mihaela Buzarnescu defeated USA’s Amanda Anisimova by a final score of 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.

GRE’s Maria Sakkari had a nearly perfect match when she held HUN’s Timea Babos to just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

AUS’ Ajla Tomljanovic crushed POL’s Magdalena Frech in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory.

Apparently, the Mubadala SVC saved the best for last in Thursday’s round of matches, as USA’s Venus Williams took on GBR’s Heather Watson in three hard-fought sets in which Williams won 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.

Notes
Madison Keys withdrew from her day match vs. Ajla Tomljanovic due to a right wrist injury. Lucky loser Magdalena Frech replaced Keys.

“I am really sorry to have to pull out of the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic,” said Keys. “I have been feeling pain in my wrist over the last couple of days and felt worse today. This event is one of my favorites and I was looking forward to playing here in San Jose, but want to thank the San Jose State University and Mubadala for pulling it together in such a short amount of time. I am excited to come back next year and play in front of your great fans.”

Danielle Collins signed autographs at 12 pm PDT in the retail booth. Also, Elise Mertens signed autographs in the Mubadala booth.

The MSVC gave a shoutout to one of their sponsors, Togo’s Sandwiches, and suggested on Twitter that pastrami-loving fans should visit a local Togo’s at 1430 Monterey Rd, 779 Story Rd or 4th & San Carlos and try their new Pretzelrami. Togo’s has been creating filling sandwiches since 1971.

Headline Sports podcast with London Marq: Did Urban Meyer know about the domestic abuse all along?; MLB players need to do tangible things to prove they’ve moved past racist tweets; plus more

On the Headline Sports podcast with London Marq:

#1 How much did Ohio State’s former head coach Urban Meyer know about his assistant coach Zach Smith’s domestic abuse towards his ex-wife Courtney Smith? Enough says Smith. She said she was friends with Meyer’s wife and addressed these issues to her and also knew for a fact that Meyer knew domestic abuse was going on with Smith attacking his wife.

#2 How will this impact and damage the Ohio State program as the regular season kicks off at the end of this month? With Meyer on on paid leave and Smith gone, will this scare off recruits and students planning to attend Ohio State this school year?

#3 The New York Yankees’ Sonny Gray said his racist tweets in 2012 were just an “inside joke.” Gray says he doesn’t feel that way today and that was something he was joking around with with a friend. Gray got booed during his last appearance for not only pitching bad, but heard fans calling him out about his racist tweets as he was smiling and leaving for the dugout after being pulled.

#4 In just a week, four MLB players with four racist tweets, Milwaukee Brewers’ Josh Hader, Atlanta Braves’ Sean Newcomb, Washington Nationals’ Trea Turner, and Gray had racist tweets uncovered. The question is, would these four players prove that their not racists now by taking on issues in the community by asking publicly “why isn’t there enough African Americans in Major League Baseball?” or “Why do most MLB teams not travel their Spanish play-by-play radio announcers and just have them limited to just home games or just weekend broadcasts?” These would be considered tangible projects. These players can take on if they were really sorry about what they said.

#5 EA Sports apologized for editing out the name of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick out of the Madden 19 NFL game in Big Sean’s song “Big Bank.” Sean had tweeted that Kaepernick’s name was left out of the game song that he lent to. EA Sports did a “oops my bad” and said they would put Kaepernick’s name back into the song, going forward with the new editions of the EA Madden 19 games starting August 6th.

A’s 3-game series versus the Tigers starts Friday night

By Jerry Feitelberg

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s host the visiting Detroit Tigers for a three-game series this weekend. The Tigers are not the same team that played the San Francisco Giants in the 2012 World Series. They are also not the same team that eliminated the A’s in the 2013 ALCS. The Tigers, my friends, have gotten old. Miguel Cabrera, who’s arguably their best player as well as a former MVP and Triple Crown winner, is out for the season with a torn triceps muscle. Their DH Victor Martinez is 39 years old and is nearing the end of his career.

The Tigers’ best player is right fielder Nick Castellanos. Castellanos made the AL All-Star team and is the most dangerous hitter in the Tigers’ lineup.

The Tigers’ pitching staff has been revamped. Max Scherzer left a couple of years ago to go to the Washington Nationals. Justin Verlander was acquired by the Houston Astros last year after the trade deadline in a waiver deal. Doug Fister had a few good years with the Tigers, but has floundered and is now on the DL with the Texas Rangers. Anibal Sanchez is gone, and Rick Porcello was traded to the Boston Red Sox in 2015 for Yoenis Cespedes.

The Tigers’ current starting rotation consists of left Blaine Hardy, who will start Friday night, Jordan Zimmerman, Drew VerHagen, Lefty Francisco Liriano, and lefty Matthew Boyd are the other starters. The 34-year old left Liriano has been around the block a few times and his best days are behind him. Zimmerman came to Detroit as a free agent, but  he had some good years with the Nationals, but has been a bust with the Tigers. VerHagen and Boyd are not household names yet.

The rebuilding Tigers will have John Hicks at first, Niko Goodrum at second, Jose Iglesias at shortstop, and Jeimer Candelario at third. Iglesias has the most experience and is a very slick fielder. The Tigers’ outfield will feature Jacoby Jones, Victor Reyes, Mike Gerber, and Nick  Castellanos. James McCann will handle the catching.

The Tigers’ bullpen is a work in progress. Their best-known reliever is Shane Greene. The A’s took Greene to the woodshed twice in June as they tagged him with losses in two consecutive games.

The A’s continue to be the hottest team in the AL. Since June 16th, the A’s are 30-20 and have made up an 11-game deficit to tie the Seattle Mariners for the second Wild Card spot in the AL. The A’s trail the first-place Houston Astros by just five games, The A’s have 10 games left with Seattle and six with Houston. Nothing can be taken for granted as the A’s continue to play well. They are confident the can come back anytime, anywhere. They own the eighth inning and have scored more runs in the eighth than any team in baseball. They have a terrific manager in Bob Melvin. Melvin had three lean years, but now has the horses and is doing a great job of managing.

Friday night’s game will feature a battle between two left-handed pitchers. Blaine Hardy (4-3, 3.61 ERA) will go for Detroit, and he will be opposed by Oakland’s Brett Anderson (2-3, 5.51 ERA). Anderson pitched six innings in his last two starts. Saturday’s game will have Jordan Zimmerman pitching for the Tigers, and he will be opposed by Edwin Jackson. Jackson beat the Toronto Blue Jays last Monday for his 100th career victory. On Sunday, the Tigers will have 34-year old left Francisco Liriano will be on the mound for Detroit, and the A’s will have the big righty Trevor Cahill do the pitching for Oakland. Cahill defeated the Blue Jays last Tuesday and allowed just six hits and two runs in six innings of work.

The A’s have to continue to win if they hope to make the playoffs. They play three against the Tigers this weekend. They have two interleague games with the LA Dodgers on Tuesday and Wednesday. They are off again on Thursday. They resume play against the LA Angels for three games starting August 10th then return home to play three against the Mariners, three against the Astros, and three against the Rangers.

The A’s have 52 games left on the schedule. The team has to play at a high level if they want to make the playoffs. It is as simple as that. End of story.

Oakland Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: Will the Raiders deal Khalil Mack?; Mack was a hold out, but Gruden wants him back in camp

On the Oakland Raiders podcast with Tony:

Khalil Mack was a hold out during training camp, and on Wednesday, the top story coming out of the Oakland Raiders was putting Mack on the trade block. Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said last season Mack didn’t even pick off a pass until the 14th week of the season.

Gruden went on to say that the Raiders weren’t very good on defense last season. Gruden was hoping that Mack gets back in camp. Gruden said the Raiders need a better pass rush. The Raiders finished in the bottom 10 in the NFL on defense. The question is–will the Raiders trade Mack?

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Manaea has good control in A’s win over Jays; A’s get good pitching and offense in sweep

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry:

The Oakland A’s Sean Manaea picked up win #10 (10-7) as he didn’t surrender a run on five Toronto Blue Jay hits, going six innings, one run earned, and five strikeouts. Manaea had a lot of his pitches working for him on Wednesday to keep the Blue Jays off balance and was also able to keep runners off base.

A’s reliever JD Wendelken came in to relieve for Manaea in the seventh loaded the bases, but got the third out and came away unscathed except for one run in the 8-3 five-run win for Oakland. Part of the success for the A’s in July was their lineup hit consistently with an average of .290. They were able to make a number of comebacks in late innings.

The A’s have Thursday off and have three games with the Detroit Tigers at the Coliseum starting Friday night. For the Tigers, Blaine Hardy (4-3), and for the A’s, Brett Anderson (2-3), to open the series.

Too Fast, Too Experienced: Taurasi takes over in Mercury’s big 104-93 road win over the Aces

Photo courtesy of Benjamin Hager/Las Vegas Review-Journal

By Morris Phillips

On the surface, teaming a 36-year old point guard with a 6’8″ back-to-the-basket center, and having them play at the WNBA’s fastest pace seems like a recipe for disaster. But when the names–Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner–are plugged in, it’s readily apparent how the Las Vegas Aces found themselves in a pickle at the Delano Las Vegas on Wednesday night attempting to combat the Phoenix Mercury’s dynamic duo.

While the super-engaged Taurasi dropped 37 points and nine assists, and was ablely assisted by Griner, who added 25 points and 11 rebounds, you could argue that the Mercury’s 104-93 win wasn’t as much about the two stars, but the hypersonic pace employed by Phoenix, that tricked the Aces into rushing shots and committing fouls.

Afterwards, Aces head coach Bill Laimbeer didn’t seem so much focused on which of the factors was most responsible for his Aces’ shortcomings, just that his team didn’t meet the challenge in what was arguably their biggest game to date.

“I though that it was a game that if we came and played with intensity, we could have won,” Laimbeer revealed. “Well, we didn’t play very well across the board.”

With the loss, the Aces (12-14) fell two games behind the Dallas Wings in the race for the eighth and final postseason spot. In order to inch closer to Dallas, the Aces will have to get it done on the road with their next three contests away from the Mandalay Bay Events Center, part of a grueling stretch of nine games in 19 days to end their inaugural season in Las Vegas.
