Webb Shines in Sacramento as Giants Bounce Back with 7–2 Win Over A’s

WEST SACRAMENTO–After the Giants fell to the A’s on Friday night, it seemed like they desperately needed a big outing from Logan Webb on Saturday to get them back on track. After splitting the series against the Diamondbacks in Arizona, the Giants needed a series win in a big way. They hoped that would start on Saturday — and it did, as they defeated the A’s 7-2.

Sacramento area legend and Rocklin native Logan Webb got the nod for the Giants on Saturday night and turned in a fantastic outing to help propel them to victory. Webb tossed six and two-thirds innings of seven-hit, two-run baseball, limiting the damage the A’s could do. He struck out six A’s hitters and issued three walks. Webb has become a calming presence for the Giants, who always feel they have a chance to win when he’s on the mound.

Bob Melvin spoke about the atmosphere for Webb’s start in Sacramento. “Yeah, you could feel the interest in him on the mound. Every time he came into the dugout there were a lot of people cheering for him… For him, he certainly had to tone it down some and not be distracted by it, and he threw a Logan Webb game — that’s pretty typical of him all year.”

Webb shared his thoughts on the experience of pitching an MLB game in his hometown. “It was really cool. I heard it the minute I walked out there,” Webb said to Susan Slusser in the postgame media scrum. “… It was a blast. I love being here and [I’m] happy I was able to get the win here.”

After his six and two-thirds innings of work, Webb was lifted for Randy Rodriguez to get the final out of the seventh. As Webb departed, nearly the entire Sacramento crowd came to their feet for a raucous ovation for the former Rocklin High School standout. Logan heard the cheers — and they meant something. “I did. I did [hear the ovation]. That was pretty cool. I wish I gave a wave or something back, but it’s always awkward in those moments. I don’t know why… I feel the love from the Sacramento crowd, and it was awesome pitching here.”

After Rodriguez got the final out of the seventh, he was followed by scoreless innings from both Tyler Rogers and Spencer Bivens. The Giants bullpen didn’t allow a hit or a walk in the final two and a third innings. Bob Melvin spoke about Rodriguez’s body of work this season and his All-Star candidacy when asked by Andrew Baggerly of The Athletic. “I think setup guys are part of this. I don’t know if there’s been a better setup man or a guy that’s come in and been a fireman and done what he’s done this year. What’s his ERA now? 0.70? And you look at his numbers against lefties too — which, for a righty, is quite the luxury to have. For me, if I’m voting, I’m voting for him.”

On the offensive side, the Giants scored early and often — something that has plagued them for much of the season. Melvin even said after the game that when the Giants score early, good things tend to happen, especially with a guy like Webb on the hill. Willy Adames got things started in the first inning with a two-out single that scored two runs. In the second, Adames added another two-RBI single to give the Giants a 4-1 lead. He finished the game 3-for-5 with four RBI — a much-needed boost for the struggling Giants offense. In the fifth, Heliot Ramos sent a Luis Severino offering 416 feet to center field to put the Giants up 5-1. The scoring was capped in the seventh when Brett Wisely ripped a two-RBI double to extend the lead to 7-1.

Logan Webb earned the win (8-6, 2.62 ERA), while Luis Severino suffered another loss for the A’s (2-10, 5.30 ERA). With the win, the Giants improved to 48-32, while the A’s fell to 37-54.

On Sunday, the A’s and Giants will play the rubber game of the series at Sutter Health Park. It will be the only MLB game played on a Sunday night this year that is not part of ESPN Sunday Night Baseball, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM PST. Hayden Birdsong (3-3, 4.30 ERA) is slated to go for the Giants, while the A’s will send Jacob Lopez (2-4, 3.88 ERA) to the mound.

Note of the day: Newly drafted Sacramento Kings players Nique Clifford and Maxime Raynaud threw out the ceremonial first pitches on Saturday night. Neither was able to locate well, as their throws sailed on either side of one another. However, Logan Webb was locked in for the two rookie tosses. “I watched. I stopped warming up and I watched,” Webb said. “Of course I am [excited], I’m always excited.” Seems Logan has kept the faith — and is excited for the 2025–26 Sacramento Kings season.

Giants Fall Flat Again in 11-2 Loss to A’s on Fourth of July

Postgame views from the field after the A’s defeated the Giants 11-2 on Friday night at Sutter Health Park. (Photo: Athletics on X)

By Jeremiah Salmonson

WEST SACRAMENTO — The San Francisco Giants’ offense is going through it right now—there’s really no other way to put it. San Francisco is 3-7 over its last 10 games, and the bats continue to show little to no signs of life. On the Fourth of July, the Giants couldn’t get much going against the Sacramento A’s, falling 11-2 at hitter-friendly Sutter Health Park.

Offensively, the Giants were abysmal again. They were in danger of being shut out until a solo home run to center field by Bret Wisely in the eighth inning. Wisely, a late substitution, jumped on a 1-0 fastball and launched it 415 feet to straightaway center to get the Giants on the board. San Francisco managed just six hits in the game and scored one other run on a Nick Kurtz error.

The Giants’ pitching and defense both let them down on Friday. They committed three errors, which didn’t help their chances, but even from the start, the pitching staff struggled to keep A’s hitters in check.

Justin Verlander lasted only three innings, allowing six runs on seven hits to put the Giants in an early hole. Mason Black came on in the fourth and didn’t fare much better, though he was able to eat innings. Black tossed four frames, giving up five hits and five runs—three of them earned. Ryan Walker pitched a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts to finish it out for San Francisco.

After taking the final two games in Arizona, the Giants looked like they may have turned a corner amid this rough stretch. But JP Sears and the A’s quickly erased any momentum San Francisco had built.

With the loss, the Giants dropped to 47-42 on the season. The A’s improved to 37-53 with the win.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. PST. It’ll be a battle of the aces as Logan Webb (7-6, 2.61 ERA) goes for the Giants against Luis Severino (2-9, 5.09 ERA) for the A’s.

Former Major League Baseball pitcher Chan Ho Park and Suga (Min Yoon-gi), a member of the famous K-Pop group BTS, are investing in a private equity fund led by Park’s firm, Team61. The investors are joining a group of investors backing the Athletics at a $2 billion evaluation in their bid to relocate to Las Vegas, according to multiple reports.

The private fund, valued at approximately $70 million, plans to acquire 2-3 percent of newly issued Athletics shares to support the team’s effort for a new stadium in Las Vegas. Joining Suga and Park in the investment fund are other notable figures, including Lee Man-deuk of Samchully Co. and Mike Joo, COO of Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s investment banking division.

Suga, who recently completed his mandatory military service and is known for his philanthropic efforts—including a ₩5 billion (approximately $3.6 million) donation to Severance Hospital in Seoul—is expected to bring cultural cachet and global branding power to the A’s as they prepare for their Las Vegas debut.

Suga has traveled the world with the popular Korean group K-Pop, including the last few years at the Oakland Coliseum for concerts. Chan Ho Park pitched for 17 seasons in the MLB, winning 124 games and accumulating 1,715 strikeouts.

Park was the first Korean pitcher in the major leagues, beginning his career with the Dodgers from 1994 to 2001, then pitching for the Padres, Mets, Phillies, Yankees, and Pirates. He aims to enhance the Athletics’ involvement in Asian baseball, an influence that could benefit the team as they prepare to enter their new era in Las Vegas.

The two most popular sports in Korea are baseball and football(soccer). Baseball is the most attended spectator sport. The KBO League is a major draw as the top league in baseball, boasting high attendance and a strong following.

An interesting move for the A’s as they attempt to gain influence and eventually recruit talent for their system within the Asian baseball market. Currently, the Dodgers have the top two Japanese stars in MLB, leading the way in Japan with the two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani and pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

San Francisco’s Robbie Ray Pitches a Complete Game Beating Arizona 7-2

San Francisco Giants starter Robbie Ray was dealing keeping the Arizona Diamondbacks in check and going the distance on Thu Jul 3, 2025 at Chase Field in Phoenix (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

Game four in the series between the San Francisco Giants (47-41) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (43-44) ended up with each team winning two games for a series tie 2-2.

San Francisco pitcher Robbie Ray was lights out pitching into the ninth something the Giants don’t see very often. He was simply amazing allowing three hits, two earned runs, one walk and seven strikeouts. The Giants offense was excellent with 12 hits while Arizona only had three hits.

Game recap: San Francisco got this game underway in a repeat of Wednesday’s game scoring two runs in the first inning. Heliot Ramos got the game off to a great start hitting a double driving Willy Adames home for a 1-0 lead. Jung Hoo Lee who had a dynamite game Wednesday also got a nice start in game four Thursday sacrificing Rafael Devers home for the 2-0 lead.

The Giants would add two more runs in the third inning taking a 4-0 lead. Adames doubled driving Mike Yastrzemski home and San Francisco again had a terrific start in this game. Giant’s pitcher Ray was plowing through the Diamondbacks. Arizona went three and out in the first four innings and did not have a single hit until the fifth inning.

Arizona finally got up on the scoreboard in the fifth with their first hit of the game. It was a good one too, a solo home run to left but trailing 4-1 they still had a lot of work to do considering they were really struggling offensively. Much of their struggle at the plate had everything to do with the work on the mound from Ray. After the home run the Diamondbacks went three and out.

The Giants would score a couple more runs in the seventh inning taking a significant lead 6-1. Rafael Devers delivered the blow with a double that scored two runners, Andrew Knizner and Adames. Arizona’s Lourdes Gurriel Jr doubled in the bottom of the seventh but that would be all for the Diamondbacks.

The game went into the ninth inning with San Francisco still leading 6-1. The Giants had three singles in a row in the inning where they loaded the bases and with only one out, and another run was on the horizon. Devers sacrificed Knizner home extending the Giants lead 7-1.

Arizona hit their second home run of the game another solo shot but still trailed 7-2 with one out.Ray took care of business and that was the ballgame with San Francisco tying the series winning this game 7-1. This was Ray’s second complete game of his career in a most impressive outing.

San Francisco broke out of their offensive slump in Wednesday’s game and carried it into Thursday night’s game. They had 12 hits while the Diamondbacks only had three hits thanks to the brilliance of Ray. Mike Yastrzemski and Adames had three hits apiece. The Giants had scored in four innings.

Game notes: After winning a tight extra-innings game Wednesday night 6-5, the Giants beat the Diamondbacks in the final game of the series Thursday. San Francisco had a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday night but let the Diamondbacks back into the game with two runs in the top of the ninth inning.

Arizona scored two runs in the ninth inning tying the game 5-5 forcing extra innings. The Giants eventually won the game in the tenth inning 6-5. The Giants win Thursday night and tied the series 2-2 as they head out to Sacramento for a series with the Sacramento Athletics Friday.

The Giants will send Justin Verlander to the mound as he continues to look for his first win this season. He has a 0-5 win/loss record and a 4.26 ERA. The A’s will start JP Sears who comes into the game with a 6-7 win/loss record and a 5.09 ERA. First pitch for this game is scheduled for 7:05 PM. San Francisco is on an offensive roll right now and will be looking to take that confidence into Sacramento.

A’s game wrap: Late Lightning Fizzles as Sacramento Falls in Tampa 6-5

Tampa Bay Rays Junior Caminero (right) gets in ahead of the tag by the Sacramento A’s third baseman Max Schuemann (left) during a double in the bottom of the sixth inning at George M Steinbrenner Stadium in Tampa Bay on Wed Jul 2, 2025 (AP News photo)

Late Lightning Fizzles as Sacramento Falls in Tampa 6-5

By Mauricio Segura

The A’s once again took their fight to the ninth inning, but heroics came up just short. In a wild Wednesday matinee, the Sacramento Athletics fell 6-5 to the Tampa Bay Rays, unable to fully erase a four-run deficit built during a disastrous sixth inning.

Sacramento got the jump early. Brent Rooker stayed scorching in day games, sending a solo homer into the Tampa sun in the first inning, his 18th of the year. Max Schuemann added a solo shot in the second, and Mitch Spence looked in control through five, scattering three hits while holding the Rays to a single run, a rare inside-the-park homer from Jake Mangum.

But the sixth inning unraveled fast for the green and gold. Spence, who entered the frame having allowed just one run, was tagged for five, including back-to-back homers by Josh Lowe and Yandy Díaz. A pitching change to Hogan Harris did little to slow Tampa’s momentum. Junior Caminero doubled, Chandler Simpson and Matt Thaiss followed with RBI singles, and just like that, a 2-1 lead became a 6-2 hole.

Still, these A’s have built a reputation for late-inning theatrics. Max Muncy jolted the dugout with a solo homer in the ninth, his seventh of the season. Austin Wynns followed with a double, and Gio Urshela drove him in. Suddenly, the bases were buzzing after singles by Max Schuemann, pinch-hitter Lawrence Butler, and Tyler Soderstrom, cutting the deficit to 6-5.

With the tying run 90 feet away and the go-ahead at second, Sacramento handed the bat to Brent Rooker. He had already homered once. He had also struck out twice. This time, it was more heartbreak than heroics. Rooker whiffed on a high fastball. Nick Kurtz followed, and despite his impressive rookie campaign, he couldn’t connect either, going down swinging to end the rally.

The loss snapped the A’s brief two-game win streak and dropped them to 36-53 on the season. Still, if there’s a silver lining, it’s the team’s continued fire in the late innings. Sacramento has now scored 56 runs in the ninth or later, fifth most in the majors. And their recent offensive struggles may be easing, with the team stringing together multi-hit innings and showcasing the kind of lineup depth they’ve lacked for much of the season.

Sacramento returns home for a nine-game stretch, starting with a Fourth of July showdown against the rival Giants. With JP Sears set to take the mound Friday and the Bay Bridge rivalry heating up, there’s little time to dwell on missed chances.
