Headline Sports podcast with London Marq: Raiders’ move to Oracle Park, hitting a major snafu–political and territorial

On the Headline Sports podcast with London:

#1 Hall and Oates once penned a hit single called “I can’t go for that” while that old tune is starting to be hummed as San Francisco Mayor London Breed says that the idea of the Oakland Raiders playing in San Francisco is hitting a snafu. The deal looked good for a minute as the San Francisco Giants were prepared to host the wayward Raiders, but all for getting the ok from the San Francisco 49ers, who were mum on Tuesday and the Mayor came out and said the Raiders should play their games in Oakland and not in the City.

#2 Breed said that with the basketball Golden State Warriors with construction at the South of Market Chase Center, UCSF Hospital, a new landing area for ferry boats,1400 units of housing. Essentially, the City may say no to all the traffic congestion with two big league teams all going at the same time.

#3 During Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta, the subject of the Raiders playing in San Diego came up and during a press conference NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made it clear that the league wants the Raiders to finish up their final season (2019) in the Bay Area.

#4 Other Bay Area options: The Raiders could used the very stadium from the team they need territorial rights from the San Francisco 49ers for use of Oracle if they get denied on that from the City then they might have to share Levis Stadium with the 49ers. This would be done only as a favor to Goodell and the league as this is the Raiders last season, but you can best bet the 49ers will be getting a share of the profits no matter if it’s at Oracle Park or Levis Stadium.

#5 The discussion of using Cal’s Memorial Stadium went off the table because of the lack of parking near the stadium and Stanford Stadium was not discussed and not considered. The subject of the Raiders going back to finish their last season at the Oakland Coliseum is now back on the table and to see if the City of Oakland and the Raiders could iron out some of their issues to make that happen. In the meantime, the NFL is waiting anxiously to make their schedules for next season.

Stanford stops by Oregon State on Thursday

The Stanford Cardinal, coming off a two-game winning streak, made sure to pay the Oregon State Beavers a visit inside the Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore. Thursday night. The tipoff has been set to 7:00 pm PT on the Pac-12 Network.

The Cardinal’s last two wins occurred at Cal in a 84-81 thriller on February 3rd and at home–Maples Pavilion–versus the Colorado State Buffaloes 75-62 on January 26th. The Cardinal has been a wishy-washy team this season, but at least they aren’t in the abyss like my alma mater, San Jose State Spartans, or some other hapless men’s basketball team out there.

Anyways, the Cardinal and Cal Bears were more of a Bay Area rivalry than anything else. The Cardinal has to be focused on the road ahead in the Pacific Northwest as the Beavers and Ducks will likely be tough customers. And, of course, the home court advantage that often shifts the game in favor of the home team.

Cardinal head coach Jerod Haase told the local media that Bryce Wills has been making plays and growing each game. Wills currently holds a career-high of 16 points. That’s definitely a good thing as the Cardinal need all the help they can get.

Before the Stanford vs. Oregon State game, it was announced that KZ Okpala was named one of ten finalists for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award. Okpala was joined by Gonzaga’s Rui Hachimura, Virginia’s De’Andre Hunter, Kentucky’s Keldon Johnson, Nevada’s Caleb Martin, Michigan’s Charles Matthews, Tennessee’s Admiral Schofield, Iowa State’s Marial Shayok, Oregon State’s Tres Tinkle, and Belmont’s Dylan Windler.

Okpala leads Stanford in scoring (18.1 points per game), rebounding (6.1 rebounds per game), three-point field goal percentage (.410), free throws (87) and minutes (33.0 mpg). He ranks third in the Pac-12 in scoring, fifth in three-point field goal percentage, and 14th in rebounding. In conference play, the forward is averaging 20.4 points per game (ranks second) and 6.1 rebounds per game.

Okpala scored a career-high 30 points at Cal and leads the Pac-12 with 12 games of 20 points or more this season. He’s one of 10 individuals in the nation to average 21.0 points per game or better in their last six games.

“KZ has been a rock for us,” said the Cardinal’s Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men’s Basketball. “He’s a foundational piece for everything we do. There’s so much more for him to grow, but he’s really developing very quickly. He certainly deserves the recognition. It is great to see him among the 10 candidates for this prestigious award.”

The nation has been taking notice of Okpala, including ESPN College Basketball Analyst Jay Bilas.

#3 Iowa wasted no time, scoring three unanswered goals.

#4 For San Jose, was it a matter of the defense didn’t protect the net for Antoine Bibeau or was Bibeau off his game?

Wild run over Barracuda in 4-2 win

By Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Barracuda had not seen the Iowa Wild since 2016 and they didn’t care for what they saw on Tuesday evening at SAP Center. Iowa scored three unanswered goals to highlight a 4-2 victory over San Jose. The loss snapped San Jose’s four-game point streak at home.

Iowa (25-16-4-3) drew first blood on the power play more than half way through the first period. Dmitry Sokolov fed a pass over to Louie Belpedio at the left point and he wired a wrist shot top-shelf over the shoulder of Cuda goalie Josef Korenar (16-4-1), who was screened with traffic in front of the crease, for his fifth goal of the season at the 12:19 mark. Michael Kapla received the secondary assist.

The Wild dominated the opening frame as they controlled most of the play and outshot San Jose 12-8.

Iowa doubled its lead in the second period thanks to a failed clearing attempt by the Cuda. Will Bitten intercepted the puck and skated into the slot, where he fed a pass over Gerald Mayhew, who blasted a one-timer past Korenar for his 14th goal of the season at the 8:14 mark.

The Cuda looked shell-shocked after Mayhew’s goal as the Wild kept pouring on and scored 78 seconds later to go up 3-0. Colton Beck cleaned up a rebound on the right side of the net after Korenar initially stopped the shot by Matt Read along the left boards. Beck’s 13th goal of the season came at the 9:32 mark. Kapla received the secondary assist for a two-point evening.

“I think the chances (for Iowa compared to us) were 20-6,” said Cuda head coach Roy Sommer. “You’re going to have games like that. You can’t play .700 hockey all year, it’s pretty tough to do.”

San Jose (26-9-2-4) finally got on the board just over a minute later when Maxim Letunov intercepted a clearing attempt by Iowa and quickly fed a pass over to a wide-open Matt Fonteyne, who buried the puck in the back of the net, beating Wild goalie Kaapo Kahkonen (13-9-4) short side for his fourth goal of the season at the 10:38 mark.

Halfway through the third period, the Cuda had a chance on the power play to bring the deficit to a one-goal game, but Francis Perron had both of his point-blank chances in front of the crease denied by Khakonen.

San Jose seized a bit of momentum in what only took two seconds to cut the lead to 3-2. With Korenar on the bench for an extra attacker with 2:57 remaining in the game, captain John McCarthy won a clean face off inside the Wild zone and the puck trickled out to Nick DeSimone, who rifled a shot top-shelf past Khakonen for his eight goal of the season at the 17:05 mark.

“It’s kind of a set play,” said McCarthy. “Obviously we don’t know where the puck is gonna go after the face off but we were in desperation mode and Desi (DeSimone) got an open look and made a nice shot.”

Mayhew iced the game for the Wild when he intercepted a puck at the point and was able to skate down the right boards and score an empty-netter for his second goal of the night and his 15th goal of the season at the 18:41 mark.

“Most of that game, (for) two periods of the game we were pretty bad,” said DeSimone. “We’re not going to win hockey games when we’re not playing our game for 40 minutes and they’re taking it to us. That’s on us and we know that.”

Khakonen made 24 saves on 26 shots to earn his 13th win of the season. Korenar had a busy night between the pipes as he made 34 saves on 37 shots in suffering the defeat.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 0/1 on the power play. Iowa was 1/3.

San Jose is 5-1-0-1 against the Central Division this season and 21-11-2-1 all time.

Jon Martin and Hunter Warner exchanged fisticuffs with each other a minute and half into the third period. Both received fighting majors.

The San Jose Sharks recalled forward Dylan Gambrell on Monday for their four-game road trip that began in Winnipeg tonight. Gambrell currently ranks third on the Barracuda in points (31), goals (11) and assists (17) with San Jose

The announced attendance was 2,534.

UP NEXT: The Barracuda travel down south to take on the red-hot Bakersfield Condors to start a three-game road trip on Friday, February 8 at 7:00 pm at Rabobank Arena.

~ San Jose’s styling in the extra period came shorthanded as they won their third straight, 3-2, halting the Winnipeg Jets Tuesday.

Brent Burns created a turnover and initiated the pass to Joe Pavelski as he went top shelf at 2:49. Coach Pete DeBoer called both plays “world class”.

Pavelski was leaving the ice and Evander Kane entering as they took a penalty for too many men on the ice at 1:20.

The Jets were on a three game winning streak and a longer seven-game one at home.

“I think PK won that game for us,” replied Pavelski with Logan Couture agreeing  “the kill getting it done,” and Justin Braun echoing the same.

Winnipeg went scoreless through their five power play advantages. “We got fortunate on the first one. Laine had 3-4 open looks,” DeBoer asserted.

The Jets’ Blake Wheeler kicked it off with his second in as many games at 3:08 of the first.

Couture then scored from the slot 13 seconds into Jacob Trouba’s tripping penalty to even the score at 10:54. It continued a now four-game point streak for Couture.

Winnipeg’s Mathieu Perreault retook the lead with his second point in as many games, this goal just under a minute into the second.

At 9:35, it looked like the Jets would take on an even bigger lead courtesy of Mark Scheifele. However, “Danny in the video room made a great call,” as video coach Dan Darrow noted Winnipeg was offsides and DeBoer was successful in his coach’s challenge. Thinking about the alternative, Braun commented, “going down 3-1 in this barn is tough.”

It was not until 2:35 of the third that Marcus Sorensen then pushed to re-tie the game before almost tripping over goalie Connor Hellebuyck.

A joint penalty was called at 11:51 to Perreault for interference and Timo Meier for embellishment.

Up Next: The Sharks continue toward game two of their Canadian road trip with their next opponent, the Calgary Flames, Thursday at 6 pm.
