Cal Bears football podcast with Morris Phillips: Too much offense gives Cal dizzy spells in lopsided shutout win at Utes

photo from sfgate.com: Utah’s Zack Moss (2) reaches the end zone while scoring one of his two touchdowns in his a win over Cal in Salt Lake City.

On The Cal Bears Football podcast with Morris:

#1 In one of the most difficult games of the season for the Golden Bears (4-4) and no doubt their worst of 2019. The Utah Utes (7-1) went to work on the Cal scoring the opening volley with a touchdown. Running back Zack Moss carried for a 4-yard run at 4:50 in the first quarter.

#2 Cal would remain scoreless in the first half as the Utes would score three more touchdowns in the second quarter on a Utes quarterback Bryan Thompson 40-yard pass to Tyler Huntley, a Jason Shelly 1-yard run, and a Brant Kuithe 1-yard pass to Jason Shelly. At the half, Cal could have asked for the mercy rule. It was 28-0.

#3 In the second half, the Utes picked up one more score in the third quarter at 9:26. Zack Jones carried for ten yards to put the frosting on the cake as the Utes would win it 35-0.

#4 Morris, what best explains best why Cal just simply couldn’t get any offense going and did quarterback Spencer Brasch, who went 7-19 for 47 yards, lack enough time and protection to throw the ball?

#5 Washington State (4-4) is up next. Cougars lost to Oregon on Saturday 37-35 and are 1-4 in their last five games. Taking some of WSU’s defensive issues under consideration, do you see Cal with a light at the end of the tunnel to win this game this coming Saturday?

Sharks Lose Again, Fall 5-2 to Sens

By Mary Walsh

The San Jose Sharks lost to the Ottawa Senators 5-2 at Canadian Tire Centre on Sunday. Ottawa goals came from Nick Paul (2), Connor Brown, Brady Tkachuk, and Anthony DuClair. Sens goaltender Craig Anderson made 34 saves in the win. Sharks goals came from Evander Kane and Kevin Labanc. Sharks goaltender Aaron Dell made 18 saves in the first two periods. Martin Jones made 7 saves in the third period.

The Sharks scored on one of six power play chances, and killed off all four penalties they took. Their shot count showed major improvement over Friday’s game, with 36 shots registered. Evander Kane generated six of those shots, with Timo Meier adding five.

“We gave up too many odd-man [rushes] again,” Sharks captain Logan Couture told NHL.com. “I don’t think we spent long enough shifts in their end. We had some shots, but we didn’t get enough traffic around their goaltender and second opportunities that were there, we just weren’t in the right spots.”

Couture also told NHL.com, “I thought we created some good looks. We didn’t finish around the net like we’re capable of. I mean, that’s also been a story this season: we’re not finishing. I can’t be sitting at one goal right now. [Tomas Hertl’s] at three, [Timo Meier’s] at two. We’ve got to score some more goals.”

Here are the final stats.

“We’re 12 games in and there’s a handful of key guys for us that haven’t played well yet,” Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer told NHL.com. “So that’s on me to get them back to the level they need to be at.”

“We’re playing from behind in a lot of these games and instead of sticking with it and trusting the group and the system, everyone wants to step out and fix it themselves, but it doesn’t work that way. So eventually you have to learn that lesson.”

The Sharks next play on Tuesday at 4:00 PM PT, in Boston against the Bruins.

Watson does in Raiders with late touchdown in 27-24 win

By Jeremy Kahn

Deshaun Watson showed the Oakland Raiders why he is already one of the top quarterbacks in the National Football League.

Watson threw for 279 yards, including a nine-yard touchdown pass to Darren Fells late in the fourth quarter, helping the Houston Texans to a come-from-behind 27-24 victory over the Raiders at NRG Stadium.

That game-winning touchdown pass gave the Texans their only lead of the game, and sent the Raiders to their second straight loss.

After the Texans next drive stalled, former Raiders cornerback Gareon Conley, who was traded to the Texans earlier this week knocked down a key third down pass to Tyrell Williams.

It was a nice afternoon for Fells, who ended up with 58 yards receiving and two touchdowns, while DeAndre Hopkins caught 11 passes for 109 yards.

In the loss, Derek Carr threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns, as the Raiders could not secure what would have been a huge win on the road before returning to the friendly confines of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum for the first time since a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on September 15.

Carr gave the Raiders a 21-13 lead in the third quarter, as he found Williams for a 46-yard touchdown pass.

Watson got the Texans within one at 21-20, when he found Fells for a four-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the third quarter.

Daniel Carlson kicked a 44-yard field goal to give the Raiders a 24-20 with a little under 11 minutes remaining in the game.

Unfortunately, the Raiders were unable to hold onto the lead, as Watson found Fells for the eventual game-winning touchdown.

Carr got the Raiders on the board in the first quarter, as he found Watsons former college teammate Hunter Renfrow for a 65-yard touchdown pass.

NOTES: Texans All-Pro defensive lineman J.J. Watt was lost for the season for the Texans, as he tore his pectoral muscle.

Josh Mauro was forced to leave the game in the first quarter with a groin injury and Rodney Hudson left the game in the first half with an ankle injury.

UP NEXT: Finally, the Raiders return to the Coliseum next Sunday when they host the Detroit Lions at 1:05 p.m.

Niners Dominate Panthers 51-13, Improve to 7-0

photo from sfgate.com: Carolina Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen is sacked by San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa during the first half of an NFL football game in Santa Clara, Calif., Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019.

By: Joe Lami

SANTA CLARA — For the second time in franchise history, the San Francisco 49ers have started a season 7-0, thanks to a historic 51-13 beat down of the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. It’s the first time since 2003 the Niners put up 50 and just the 12th time in franchise history.

It’s hard to believe that when a team drops a 50-burger, the defense is the first thing that should be mentioned, but that’s the case. No one had a better day than Nick Bosa, who had three sacks and an interception. It marks the first-time in 49ers’ history that a player had accomplished it and the first time since 2017 anyone has done so.

Bosa continues to strengthen his case as a lock for the Defensive Rookie of the Year, but now should be in consideration of Defensive Player of the Year. His teammate, Richard Sherman, agrees, “he’s playing like he’s been in the league for ten years. With what he’s shown so far, he should be in line for the defensive MVP.”

“Since the first day he’s gotten here, he hasn’t changed. No matter how everyone looks at him or how he plays or if he’s hurt or not. He’s always very even-keeled. I think people like that are very impressive. He’s just very confident in himselff. The more he plays, the better he’ll get, as long as he can stay healthy. He’s a special player, definitely hasn’t arrived yet. He has a lot more to go, but he’s been playing extremely well,” added Shanahan.

He was the driving force behind the defense’s incredible performance that included seven combined sacks, nine tackles for loss, nine QB hits, three interceptions, and seven pass break-ups.

Tevin Coleman powered the offense with one receiving and three rushing touchdowns on 118 all-purpose yards. He became the first Niner to score four TDs in a game since Jerry Rice in 1993 and just the third to total four in a single-game.

The offense looked electric on the first drive of the game, where they marched down the field on an 11-play 75-yard drive and wouldn’t look back. Emmanuel Sanders capped off the opening drive with his first touchdown as a member of the 49ers. He finished with three receptions for 19 yards and the touchdown.

“I ran a five-yard out route. The ball was tipped, but it ended up falling right into my hands. It was probably one of the easiest touchdowns I’ve had. It was awesome to get on the opening drive to be a newcomer on this team and be able to open up like that is awesome,” added Sanders.

Sanders’ new addition to the room gives a different perspective of how special this run truly is. “The locker room is just amazing with a great group of players and great personalities. I showed up today, expecting the same results in personality. I’ll never forget going out into the tunnel with these guys. Everybody was laughing and smiling. This is football; this is fun. I’m blessed to be here”.

Deebo Samuel and Raheem Mostert added to the scoring, both with rushing touchdowns.

Jimmy Garoppolo was nearly perfect, throwing 18/22 for 175 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception to Luke Keuchly. He was also sacked three times, including a safety. Following the game, he blamed the pick on a mental error trying to hit George Kittle. Kittle was his primary target, per usual, catching six balls for 86 yards.

Garoppolo continues to spread the ball around incredibly within Shanahan’s offense, as he’s thrown nine touchdowns to nine different receivers on the year.

Christian McCaffrey had the lone touchdown for the Panthers and was one of their only bright spots. He rushed for 117 yards on 14 carries and the score.

Kyle Allen entered the contest undefeated on the season but was quickly outmatched. He was held to just 4.3 yards per attempt, going for 158 yards, completing 19 of 37.

The Niners have to quickly recover and get ready for Thursday, where they will face the 3-4 Cardinals at 5:20 p.m. It won’t be a cakewalk either for San Francisco, as they’ve struggled mightily against Arizona. The Cardinals have owned the series recently, winning the last eight contests and nine of the last ten.

OKC wins in a blowout over Warriors 120-92; GSW remains winless

photo from sfgate.com: Oklahoma City Thunder guard Dennis Schroder (17) shoots in front of Golden State Warriors forward Eric Paschall (7) in the second half of an NBA basketball game Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019, in Oklahoma City.

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors, smarting from a blowout loss at the hands of the Los Angeles Clippers last Thursday night, were hammered by the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday by a score of 120-92. Also, the game was not as close as the final score might indicate. The Warriors trailed by 33 at the end of the first half 70-37. Stephen Curry was the only Warrior in double figures with ten.

The Thunder increased the lead to 37 at the end of the third quarter 105-68. The Warriors outscored the Thunder 24-15 in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late.

The Warrior fans have to be concerned this team may not be good enough to make the playoffs. Head coach Steve Kerr and his staff know that it will take six to eight weeks to see where this team will be going. Right now, the Warriors are not playing defense. They have two centers out with injury. Willia Cauley-Stein has an ankle injury and may miss another week before returning to action.

Kevon Looney is seeing a neurologist to determine why he is having neuropathic pain in his leg. His return is unknown. Alen Smailagic, the big center from Serbia, also has an ankle injury. He is making progress, but no one knows when he will play. Also, the offense needs to get better.

The role players such as rookie Jordan Poole and third-tear player Damian Lee are going to have to put more points on the board. Jacob Evans has to step up and assume the role that Shaun Livingston had in the past five seasons. The W’s need to have better ball movement. They recorded 17 assists in the game.

They were making 30 or more in the glory years. Failure to move the ball allows opposing defenses to double team Steph Curry. If Curry is double-teamed, that frees up a shooter, and the role players are going to have to step up and make the shots. Failure to do is costing the Warriors to win.

The Warriors also have nine new players on the roster. D’Angelo Russell scored just six points in Sunday’s game. He was ejected in the third period for arguing with a referee. The Warriors need him to help fill the void created by Kevin Durant’s departure and Klay Thompson’s injury. Glenn Robinson III had just 3 points in Sunday’s game.  Alec Burks is scheduled to return, and that may help the Warriors put some points on the board.

The Warriors shot 32.6% from the floor. They made 5 threes in 31 tries while the Thunder countered with 15 threes. The Warriors had three players in double figures. Curry had 23, Draymond Green 10, and rookie Eric Paschall also kicked in with 10. The Thunder had five players in double figures.

Dennis Schroeder, coming off the bench, led the Thunder with 22. Danilo Gallinari had 21, Terrance Ferguson 13, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 19, and the veteran point guard Chris Paul added 10. The Thunder shot 55.7% from the floor. They outrebounded the Warriors 50-40.

The Warriors play their first back-to-back game Monday night against the Memphis Grizzlies. Game time at 5:00 p.m. PT. Steve Kerr will be doing everything he can to have his team ready to win their first game of the year.

Winless Kings are blown out in Utah 113-81

Jazz kings final
Graphic: @NBCBA

by Charlie O. Mallonee

“That was embarassing,” said Kings Head Coach Luke Walton after his team was blown out by the Utah Jazz 113-81 on Saturday night. Walton was not blaming just his players. He was blaming himself and his coaching staff as well. The poor performance the team has shown in its 0-3 start to the season has the entire organization on edge.

To say that no one saw this coming is a total understatement. The Kings were projected to be one of the teams fighting for the eighth playoff slot in the NBA Western Division. Right now, fans are asking when will the Kings win their first game of the season.

This game was over by halftime

The Kings trailed the Jazz 35-25 after the first 12 minutes were in the book. Then came the disastrous second period. Utah outscored Sacramento 31-16.

The Kings put in just 5 of 15 field goal attempts (33.3%) in the second quarter while the Jazz was shooting at 57.1% clip. Sacramento had no Fast Break Points in the first half. It was just ugly.

The teams went to the locker rooms with the Jazz leading the Kings 66-41.

Hey, it was the back end of a back-to-back

Yes, the Kings were playing the second game of a back-to-back set on the road which means the odds were not in their favor. However, the Jazz (2-1) lost to the Lakers on the road on Friday night 95-86, so they were on the second game of a back-to-back as well.

Back-to-back games on the road are tough to win, but that is no excuse for the poor performance the Kings showed on Saturday night.

All Sacramento starters report to the bench

With 8:39 to go in the third quarter, Luke Walton pulled his starters off the floor. It was a coach waving the white flag. He took the opportunity to put in his reserves and get them some valuable playing time.

Utah top performers

  • Bojan Bogdanovic scored a game-high 26 points in just over 24 minutes on the floor. He hit 10 of 18 shots from the floor including five 3-pointers.
  • Donovan Mitchell added 15 points. He went a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the 3-point line.
  • Mike Conley and Georges Niang scored 12 points each.
  • As a team, the Jazz shot 56.4 % from the floor and 48.6% from downtown. They outrebounded the Kings 43-31.

Kings in the spotlight

  • Dewayne Dedmon led the Kings in scoring with 11 points. He also added six rebounds.
  • Bogdan Bogdanovic put up 10 points and dished out two assists.
  • De’Aaron Fox scored nine points and distributed five dimes.
  • The Kings shot just 37% from the field.

Up next

The Kings will have Sunday off and will return to play on Monday night when they will host the 2-0 Denver Nuggets at the Golden 1 Center.

The Jazz will travel to Phoenix to take on the Suns on Monday evening.

Offensively Challenged: Cal’s makeshift lineup no match for Utah in 35-0 rout

By Morris Phillips

Nothing went right for the Cal Bears on Saturday night.

With Utah leading 35-0 in the third quarter, and FS1 TV announcers Tim Brando and Spencer Tillman pulling out all the stops to hold their wandering, viewing audience, Brando referenced Joe Starkey and his 500th Golden Bears broadcast. The announcers quickly listed Starkey’s accomplishments with Cal, previously with the 49ers, and named Starkey’s broadcast partners including Lee Grosscup.

But when it came time to show Starkey at work, the TV camera found the iconic broadcaster blocked from view by a well-placed window frame in the pressbox. Only Starkey’s trademark bushy eyebrows were visible with color man Mike Pawlawski seemingly holding down the radio broadcast alone.

Oh well. The Cal-Utah football game needed all the help it could get. Even Starkey couldn’t assist.

Anything would have been better than focusing on a beat-up Bears’ offense that managed just six first downs and failed to cross midfield after its initial possession of the game.

Again, six first downs and no potential, scoring drives over the game’s final 53 minutes.  Ouch.

“Spencer can throw the ball. It was tough to get things going, which would be a little bit of an understatement,” coach Justin Wilcox admitted. “The run game, pass game, we’ve got to help him some more. We have to give him answers. I think Spencer did fine.”

Wilcox appeared to be willing to give his inexperienced offense a break. He wasn’t as forgiving with his heralded defense that offered a second-straight subpar performance.

“We didn’t play well. We didn’t play the run well. We didn’t play the pass well. We didn’t tackle very well. We didn’t do anything,” said Wilcox. “Their offense, whether it was run game or pass game, they kind of did whatever they wanted and we weren’t able to get enough stops.”

“We didn’t make the plays and they did. It’s really frustrating. We have to go back and keep encouraging the guys and keep coaching them and giving them answers.”

Brasch, the third stringer who got mop up duty last week versus Oregon State, made his first collegiate start behind a makeshift offensive line, missing notable receivers and working with a pair of knicked up runners all but insuring this one wasn’t going to be pretty. Utah’s dominating defense would see to that.

But to this extreme? Utah pitched a shutout against Pac-12 competition for the first time since joining the conference in 2011.

The Bears saw Utah’s Tyler Huntley methodically move the Utes up and down the field in a flawless first half. Hundley’s participation was a gametime decision and he played with a noticeable limp. No matter, Huntley completed 11 of 17 passes as the Utes rolled up 351 yards in total offense in the first half and led 28-0 at the break.

Cal’s streak of holding 14 consecutive opponents to 24 points or less ended before the halftime.

So what remains for a team that was nationally ranked a month ago, and now is mired in a four-game losing streak?

Most importantly, a week off for a group that has more than its share of bumps and bruises.
