Sharks Beat Devils 3-2 in OT, Couture Wins It With First Goal Since Injury Return

photo from sfgate.com: The San Jose Sharks Marcus Sorenson scores past New Jersey goaltender Cory Schnieder at SAP Center in San Jose on Thursday night

By Jerry Feitelberg

It’s good to have the captain back, or at least that’s what Sharks fans are saying after Logan Couture scored in overtime to cap a 3-2 comeback win after trailing 2-0 and snap a five-game losing Streak. Marcus Sorensen scored a short-handed goal and Mario Ferraro also lit the lamp to give San Jose its first win after the trade deadline.

Couture scored his first goal since returning to the lineup in the previous game, beating Schneider 38 seconds into the overtime for the win. Brent Burns had circled the cage and fed Couture in the slot, but his shot ricocheted off the goalie.

Evander Kane picked up the rebound with his back to the net, hooked his stick to pass to Couture at the far post. Couture buried it for the win and his 15th goal of the year.

Ferraro started San Jose’s comeback with his second goal of the year 2:20 into the third when his point shot fluttered through traffic, beguiling Devils net minder Corey Schneider to cut the lead to 2-1. Noah Gregor, one of the young players who will see an expanded role after the deadline departures, picked up his first career assist on the play.

Joel Kellman, filling in on the penalty kill for an injured Melker Karlsson and the traded Barclay Goodrow, managed to force the puck the other way on a two-on-one with Marcus Sorensen. Kellman feathered the pass to Sorensen perfectly, allowing the Swede to bury his seventh goal of the year with 4:02 left in the second to tie the game.

New Jersey’s pair of first period goals came off Sharks miscues, with Travis Zajac managing to score on a no angle shot that Martin Jones saved but ultimately was pulled off the post for. The puck was sitting in the crease when Marc-Edouard Vlasic, attempting to clear it, may have put it across the goal line 11:09 into the game.

Nikita Gusev scored just under four minutes later when Jacob Middleton had a chance to clear the puck, but was pickpocketed by Gusev right in the slot. Gusev outwaited Jones for the easy goal and a 2-0 Devils lead at the time.

The Sharks continue a six-game homestand when they face the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday night in a homecoming of sorts for one player. Patrick Marleau will face the team that traded him to the Eastern Conference in Monday’s dealings ending his second stint in Teal.

The Biggest Win of the Season?: Cal handles No. 21 Colorado in season’s most significant moment yet

By Morris Phillips

BERKELEY, CA–For the rebuilding Cal Bears, every win is revelatory, and beating a Top 25 opponent for the first time this season, even more so.

In beating No. 21 Colorado with the Buffs desperate to maintain pace in the race for the top spot in the Pac-12, and just as eager to avoid a bad loss for the NCAA Tournament committee to see, the Bears truly surprised with their 76-62 win on Thursday.

They just didn’t surprise themselves or Coach Mark Fox.

“We had time to prepare, and I think guys came in with the right mentality,” Kareem South said. “I seen it in their eyes before the game that they were locked in.”

The Bears built upon their 25 minutes of credible basketball in a frustrating loss to Colorado at Boulder earlier this month by maintaining an efficient, offensive performance for 40 minutes in Thursday’s win. The key was having South as a second, elite performer to join the consistent Matt Bradley, who burned Colorado for a career-best 26 points on just 14 shots from the floor.

“Even though we didn’t close out that game, it did give us some confidence coming into this game that if we just string together a few more minutes of it, we’ll give ourselves a chance to win. And that’s what happened,” Fox said of the transition from the first meeting to the second against Colorado.

South’s 19 points on 12 shots from the field may have been his best performance of the season, and clearly his best in conference play. The graduate transfer had seen his confidence shaken by a stretch of missing 45 of his previous 58 shots over seven games. But in the first seven minutes against the Buffs, South drove the basket for two scores, then came up with a steal and a coast-to-coast layup. That sequence seemed to energize his game.

Cal’s 38-point, first half not only put them up 12 at the break, but put Colorado on skates. Their normal, offensive patience disappeared in the second half, as they looked like the unranked challenger and Cal the NCAA-bound favorite. The Buffaloes missed 17 of 20 3-point attempts after the break and never gave themselves a chance to rally. Cal protected their lead by simply playing off Colorado’s over aggressive defense, which sent the Bears to the line 17 times after the break, where they converted 13 times.

The Bears improved to 12-16, 6-9 and could clinch a spot in a winnable 8-9 quarterfinal game in the conference tournament with another win in their final three regular season contests. Utah affords them their best shot, and that comes on Saturday afternoon in the home finale.

Colorado fell to 21-8, 10-6 and the loss likely cost them any chance at winning the regular season title. They lost consecutive ballgames for the first time in conference play, and will need to string together some wins down the stretch to improve their NCAA tournament seeding. Coach Tad Boyle pointed to his team’s lack of aggressive, offensive play that has seen them attempt a paltry average of just 11 free throws over their last five ballgames.

“When you don’t make shots, you’d better figure out another way to win. That’s by getting to the foul line, which we can’t do,” Boyle admitted. “If you can’t get stops, you can’t get to the line, you can’t finish through contact, you can’t make open shots, you can’t win.”

McKinley Wright led Colorado with 18 points. Tyler Bey added 13 and Lucas Siewert had 11.

Lakers, without LeBron trounce Warriors 116-86

By Jerry Feitelberg

San Francisco- The visiting Los Angeles Lakers, without the services of LeBron James, overwhelmed the Warriors in the second half of the game to win going away 116-86. The Warriors’ Andrew Wiggins did not play due to a back issue. However, the W’s welcomed back Draymond Green back to the starting lineup.

The Warriors gave the Lakers a tussle in the first half. The Lakers, owners of the best record in the Western Conference, did not push the young Warriors aside in the first half. The W’s behind the play of Damion Lee, Jordan Poole, and Eric Paschall finished the first period tied at 24. The W’s held their own in the second quarter. The Lakers led 37-29 when the W’s closed to within two 39-37. With the score 42-37, the refs called a foul on Draymond Green. Draymond screamed at the refs and let loose with an expletive. Draymond was hit with his 13th technical foul of the year. On the next play, Green appeared to be fouled by Dwight Howard and was angered that there was no call. He unleashed his anger at the refs again..Since it was his second of the night, he was ejected. Also, it was his 14h of the campaign and two more will cost him a one-game suspension. The Lakers could not shake the determined Warriors. Rookie Eric Paschall played well and made three straight buckets. The Lakers’ Anthony Davis hit a three to put them up 54-50. Paschall made another bucket to finish the first half with the Warriors trailing 54-52.

The Lakers blew it open in the third quarter. They overwhelmed the W’s 40-17. They had two much size, and their defense stopped the Warriors cold. The Lakers forced turnovers and their offense started clicking. The Lakers won the fourth quarter 22-17 to win the game 116-86.

Game Notes and Stats- With the loss, the W’s drop to 12-47. They have lost eight in a row. The Lakers improved to 45-12 and have now won seven in a row.

The Warriors offense went south in the second half. They made a total of 13 field goals. Five were three-pointer, and 8 were two-pointers. The Lakers’ defense forced 16 turnovers in the second half. The Warriors committed a total of 26 in the game. Teams usually lose when they turn the ball over that many times. Thursday night was no exception.

Eric Paschall led the team with 23 points. Jordan Poole had 16 points and 8 rebounds. Damion Lee had 15, and Ky Bowman finished with 11.

The Lakers Anthony Davis had 23, Kyle Kuzma 18, JaVale McGee 12, Avery Bradley 12, and Rajon rondo 12.

The Warriors signed Mychal Mulder to a 10-day contract. The W’s will re-evaluate Steph Curry on Saturday. Steph is hoping to play on Sunday, but head coach Steve Kerr is not sure that Steph will be ready

The Warriors play the Sun in Phoenix on Saturday. The game time will be at 6:00 pm. They then travel across the county to face the Washington Wizards on Sunday. That game will start at 5:30 pm.

31 point rallies in third and fourth quarters by Thunder set back Kings 112-108

photo from newsday.com: Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams (12) shoots between Sacramento Kings’ Harrison Barnes (40), Kent Bazemore (26), Buddy Hield (24) and Yogi Ferrell (3) during the first half of an NBA basketball game Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020, in Oklahoma City

By Jeremiah Salmonson

The Sacramento Kings were going into Oklahoma City feeling good. They were on a three-game winning streak and poised to compete against a surprisingly upstart Oklahoma City Thunder team. However, the Kings would be without starting guard De’Aaron Fox. Fox has been dealing with a myriad of nagging injuries and the abdominal discomfort held him out of action on Thursday night. The tip-off was set for 5 PM PST in Oklahoma City.

The first half went just the way the Kings wanted it. The Kings shot 47.8% from the field and a great 41.2% from deep. The Kings scored 27 in the first and 34 in the second compared to 25 and 25 respectively from the Thunder. The Kings would lead by 11 at 61-50 going into the half.

The Thunder scored 45.7% from the field in the first half shooting 35.3% from deep. The Kings received stellar play in the first half from Harry Giles as he scored 15 points in 12 minutes. The only issue is that Harry picked up three fouls in the half. Danillo Gallinari scored 12 points to lead the Thunder in the first half.

In the second half, things began to crumble. The King’s shot-making evaporated late in the third and the Thunder went on a long 13-0 run. The Kings kept the Thunder from taking a dominant lead but the 11 point lead they took into the second half was gone.

One of the worst aspects of this was what happened next. The Kings got themselves into the penalty in just over two minutes and that would prove to be the difference in the game. The Thunder scored 31 points in both the third and fourth quarters to down the Kings 112-108. The Kings scored 21 and 26 in the third and fourth quarters respectively which was not enough to overtake the resurgence of the Thunder.

Leading the way for the Thunder in victory was Danillo Gallinari who had 24 points followed by Shae Gilgeous-Alexander who had 20 points. For the Kings, Harrison Barnes led the way with 21 points followed by an outstanding performance by Harry Giles who finished with 19 points.

Up Next: The Kings fly to Memphis to take on the formidable but struggling Memphis Grizzlies tomorrow. Tip-off is set for 5 PM PST in Memphis.

Stanford Cardinal basketball podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Cardinal survive second half against Utes for win

gostanford.com photo

On the Cardinal podcast with Jerry:

#1 Jerry how important was it that Stanford (19-9) was coming off two wins over the Washington schools and then facing a team they had trouble with the last time they met in the Utah Utes (15-3) and got the victory 70-62.

#2 Like your headline read last night the Cardinal led from wire to wire in this one and never looked back it looked like the Cardinal executed on defense to hold the Utes back just enough to get a eight point win.

#3 In the second half the Utes fought right back outscoring the Cardinal 40-36 and it was just a margin of error that could have cost the Cardinal in that second half

#4 Head coach Jerod Haase said the game was not a thing of beauty but the Cardinal hung on just enough to win it

#5 It doesn’t get any easier as the Cardinal host the Colorado Buffaloes (21-7) Sunday night at Maples Jerry tell us how you see this match up.

Reign win seasaw battle over Barracuda 4-2

sjbarracuda.com photo

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE, Calif- Luck can be tricky thing. In a game they mostly dominated, the San Jose Barracuda were on the end of some tough luck in a 4-2 loss to the Ontario Reign on Wednesday evening at SAP Center.

A fluky bounce led to a 2-on-0 breakaway for Giovanni Fiore who lifted a backhand top-shelf past ‘Cuda goalie Josef Korenar for what proved to be the game winning goal, Fiore’s fourth of the season, at the 10:52 mark of the third period.

Both teams split their last two games against each other. San Jose is 3-5-0-1 on the season against its SoCal rival. Ontario have a seven game winning streak on the road and jumped ahead of San Diego for fourth place and the final playoff spot in the Pacific Division with 60 points.

Ontario (27-20-5-1) drew first blood on the power play in the first period. The Reign took advantage of a 5-on-3 opportunity. Paul LaDue sent in a shot from the left point that was initially saved by Korenar but the rebound leaked out to Carl Grundstrom who buried it home for his 11th goal of the season at the 10:57 mark.

The Reign hadn’t registered a shot on goal for almost the first 11 minutes of the opening frame until their two-man advantage. The ‘Cuda (17-27-3-2) had outshot the Reign 8-0 but goalie Matt Villalta made key point blank saves to keep the Barracuda off the scoreboard.

“We had a really solid game,” said Sasha Chmelevski regarding his team’s performance. “I don’t think we had the right breaks at the right time and sometimes that costs you.”

San Jose scored the equalizer 38 seconds into the second period. Jayden Halbgewachs placed a shot on net. Danil Yurtaykin collected the puck and performed a spin-o-rama pass over to a wide open Manny Wiederer who tapped home the puck into an empty net while falling down for his third goal of the season.

Ontario regained the lead thanks to another trip to the sinbin by San Jose. Blaine Byron won a face off back up to Paul LaDue at the point. LaDue’s slapshot was redirected off Tim Schaller’s body for a power play goal, his first goal of the season at the 6:31 mark.

“There were times we pushed the pace, and there were times where they kinda took it to us. It was one of those games. It was a little back and forth. It was enough that I thought we did enough positive things,” said co-head coach Michael Chiasson.

The Barracuda tied the game back up on the power play late in the middle frame. Ivan Chekhovich led a rush up the ice. He fed a pass over to Halbgewachs who quickly sent it over to Chmelevski. The rookie forward then made a nice forehand-to-backhand move to finish off a pretty tic-tac-toe goal for his 10th goal of the season at the 18:27 mark.

“I just went to the net and Halbs (Halbgewachs) found me. I just wanted to be patient with the puck cause I knew the goalie was going to wait for me to make a move. So I was glad that I scored,” Chemelvski said.

With his two helpers, Halbgewachs notched his 11th mutli-point game of the season.

“I’m trying to work, just be consistent every single game. I think that is what I lacked the most is consistency. If I keep that going, things are bright for the future,” Halbgewachs said.

Byron iced the game with an empty netter goal, his 11th of the season, after a turnover by Jonny Brodzinski to complete the scoring at the 19:16 mark.

Villalta finished the night with 33 saves on 35 shots to earn his ninth win of the season. Korenar stopped 21 of the 24 shots he faced in suffering the tough luck loss. He is now 0-4-1 against Ontario.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 1-for-4 on the power play. Ontario was 2-for-4. The ‘Cuda have scored a power play goal in five straight games.

Yurtaykin was injured four minutes into the second period and left the game when he was slammed up against the boards by Ryan Stanton. No penalty was called on the play. Yurtaykin did not return to the game.

Anthony Greco played in his first game as a member of the ‘Cuda. He was acquired in a trade by the San Jose Sharks along with a 2020 first-round pick this past Monday for Barclay Goodrow and a 2020 third-round pick. Greco has appeared in 40 AHL games this season between Springfield and Syracuse, recording 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points.

The fourth-year pro set career highs with 30 goals, 29 assists and 59 points last season, earning a trip to the 2019 AHL All-Star Classic. He also made his NHL debut, appearing in one game with the Florida Panthers.

Greco has played 264 AHL games with Springfield and Syracuse, amassing 85 goals and 73 assists for 158 points

Keaton Middleton played in his 100th AHL game.

The announced attendance was 2,149.

UP NEXT: The Barracuda continue their six-game homestand hosting the San Diego Gulls on Saturday 2/29 at 1:15pm at SAP Center.
