San Francisco 49ers report: 49ers head into much-needed bye week

By Ana Kieu

SANTA CLARA–After losing to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers head into a much-needed bye week. The 49ers fell to the Saints 27-13 at Mercedes-Benz Superdome in Week 10.

The 49ers are currently 4-6. Normally, bye weeks are long and boring, but this bye couldn’t have come at a better time.

“They need some rest; they need to get away,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told ESPN. “We’ll have a couple days just to keep guys loose and moving around a little bit so we don’t get too far away from football, but this is as much of a needed rest as a team I’ve been on.”

Injuries have plagued the 49ers, and this season, it’s no different. Shanahan is hopeful that Richard Sherman, Tevin Coleman, Raheem Mostert, and Deebo Samuel will return just in time for the 49ers’ game against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on November 29th at 1:05 pm PT.

On Tuesday, the 49ers placed two more players on injured reserve. Jonathan Cyprien injured his hamstring and is expected to miss a few weeks. The 49ers activated Cyprien from the practice squad after Jaquiski Tartt suffered a season-ending toe injury. Also, JaMychal Hasty suffered a broken collarbone and will be out for the season. With both players on injured reserve, the 49ers have a total of 16 players on the list.

A playoff run is a long shot for the 49ers, as they would likely need to win out or win five of their remaining six games, which feature four teams with six or more wins. Those six games may not go as planned, but the 49ers will make the most out of their time and figure things out as they try to become contenders again.

“Trying to do the best you can each week, every practice, I think that goes hand in hand with evaluating guys, what they are now, what they’re going to be next week, how they’re going to help us finish out this year and what they’re going to be in the future,” Shanahan told ESPN. “My biggest thing, and what I’m getting guys to focus on, is just getting better. That’s a cliché you say a lot, you get better or worse, but when guys are down, you better make sure you don’t make it worse. … Hopefully, we’ll get a few guys back as this goes through the end. And to me, when guys just worry about that stuff, it helps us know what they are, how they’re responding to adversity, how they’re going to be going forward. I want guys who are always continuing to improve, whether you’re a rookie or you’re a 10-year vet. If you’re not improving, you’re on your way out.”

#2 The Raiders in their last three wins have defeated the Browns, Chargers and Broncos. Versus the Browns great defensive game against the Chargers and Broncos the offense was on all game long.

#3 Carr on Sunday threw for 154 yards no touchdowns passes it was impressive to throw a high scoring game and not get a touchdown pass.

#4 The ground game worked for Vegas as running backs Josh Jacobs and Devontae Booker both carried for two touchdowns each.

#5 The Raiders next task will be a handful as they face the mighty Kansas City Chiefs at Allegiant Stadium on Nov 22nd. The best advantage the Raiders have is having home field.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: Padres Clevinger out for 2021; Hall of Fame balloting as Bonds and steroid era players try again; plus more

San Diego Padre pitcher Mike Clevinger leaving game 1 of the NLDS on Oct 6, 2020 at Arlington will have Tommy John surgery for his elbow and will miss the 2021 season (AP News file photo)

On That’s Amaury:

#1 Amaury how shocking is it that San Diego Padres pitcher Mike Clevinger is now out for the 2021 season after having Tommy John surgery on his elbow. He was a big value pitcher coming over from Cleveland during the season.

#2 Amaury bolloting for the 2021 MLB Hall of Fame saw Mark Buehrle, Torii Hunter, Nick Swisher and Barry Zito enter as candidates while high vote getters from the steroid era Curt Schilling, Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds are also in the running.

#3 Former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy LaSorda has been admitted into ICU at an Orange County Hospital. LaSorda 93 had a heart attack when he was Dodgers manager in 1996 and had attended game 6 of the 2020 World Series between the Tampa Bay Rays and Dodgers. LaSorda’s reason for being in the hospital was not disclosed.

#4 Turning to hockey Amaury, The San Jose City Council had a meeting on Monday at San Jose City Hall regarding the planning of development around SAP Center which include 65 new buildings on 84 acres surrounding SAP Center and BART also plans to develop right across the street. The Sharks had been opposed to BART coming to SAP Center and tried to go stop it in court in 2017. Their fear was too much traffic, too much congestion. The City plans another meeting on Dec 3rd regarding street closures and the Sharks said if there is sufficient gridlock and their parking revenue is cut they will consider moving out of downtown San Jose.

#5 Amaury is there any future consideration for Sharks on Spanish radio as you might recall last season Jesus Zarate called the play by play on the Sharks original flagship station 910 ESPN Deportes. Fans received a “Los Tiburones” t shirt for Hispanic Heritage night at SAP Center and it was former San Jose Mercury News columnist Mark Purdy who coined the “Los Tiburones” name. Will the Sharks return on Spanish radio again for the new season?

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: With New Vaccines Sports see Game Changer

With New Vaccines Sports see Game Changer

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

We heard all the projections that a vaccine for Covid-19 would take years, because most vaccines usually do. However within one week Pfizer and Moderna two very big and innovative pharmaceutical companies announced their new vaccines, both reporting their trials showed over 90 percent effective.

Next step is for the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) to approve and then the distribution to millions of Americans. An once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between the Federal Government and some of the world largest pharmaceutical companies worked together to bring results during a crisis of this magnitude.

The same Chemicals that in time of war are used to construct military missiles, to build weapons, drones, body armor now are fighting for the civilian population. The old Korean War-era law known as the Defense Production Act of 1950 was used again by the administration in power and named Operation Warp Speed.

To develop and built all that is needed to combat this Covid virus. Dr. Anthony Fauci calls is good news and now we have to work on getting it to the people. He called these vaccines impressive and that they could be out to the public by the end of next month.

It has taken these companies six to seven months to develop a vaccine, a much needed instrument against this virus and the sports world is breathing today some relief from months of uncertainty.

For most of the year we have seen empty stadiums, protocols for players and staff, fans (when allowed like in the NLCS and World Series) and we have been living under a totally different lifestyle. MLB, NBA, NFL have lost billions of dollars in revenue, it has forced these leagues to reduce their regular-season amount of games played, where they play it and in some instances how they play it.

This virus has changed everything in the sports world, however, with these new vaccines; things should improve and eventually improve to the goal of everybody, to return to a normal world, and the world we knew before. When the only time you had your temperature checked was at your doctor’s office, that type of world.

I am sure everybody that is involved with sports, players and staff across the country and millions of fans sees this as very positive news.

The most appropriate and most used phrase in sports, applies here: This is a “game changer”.

Stay well and stay tuned.

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Bears finally play their first game and get trounced by UCLA

UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson (1) takes a leap of faith over Cal Bears cornerback Josh Drayden (20) as the Bears Evan Tattersall (54) watches the play in the first half at UCLA on Sun Nov 15, 2020 (AP News photo)

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips:

#1 Morris, the UCLA Bruins (1-1) on Sunday didn’t waste anytime jumping on the Cal Bears (0-1) at the Rose Bowl taking a 27-10 lead to get things started in the first half.

#2 Lots of defense from both teams in the second half where UCLA was the only team who scored in the fourth quarter a touchdown as the Bears get trounced in the opener 34-10.

#3 Morris, would you say a lot of this game loss for Cal had to be attributed to all the schedule changes the Bears had to go through they started out the week not even knowing how to prepare for a game at ASU that might not be played, then it was canceled once they got to ASU and were told on Friday night to get to Los Angeles for a Sunday morning game against UCLA.

#4 As tough as the loss was for Cal how important is it for the Bears to at least to have got this first game in the books considering all the changes and preparation they put into practicing this week.

#5 The Bears play their second straight road game this time next Sat Nov 21st at Oregon State (0-2). The Beavers took a close loss against the Washington Huskies (1-0) 27-21 at Husky Stadium in Seattle on Saturday. The Beavers and Huskies played to a narrow margin in the first half with the Huskies taking the half time lead 24-21. The second half was all defense with UW getting the only score in the half with a field goal and a 27-21 final. Morris set up the Cal Bears at OSU for this Saturday.

49ers fall to 4-6 on the year after 27-13 loss to the Saints in New Orleans

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees (9) watches the action in the second half against the San Francisco 49ers at the Superdome in New Orleans on Sun Nov 15, 2020 (AP News photo)

By Joe Hawkes
Staff Writer

NEW ORLEANS, LA — Already dealing with a depleted roster, the 49ers needed to play near perfect against the Saints if they expected to leave the Crescent City with a win. San Francisco had their share of chances, but couldn’t overcome four turnovers as the Saints take down the 49ers with a 27-13 victory in front of approximately 6,000 fans inside the Mercedes Superdome on Sunday afternoon.

New Orleans (7-2) have now won six-straight games and send the 49ers to their third-straight loss this season. Its the first three-game losing streak for San Francisco since 2018.

The injury-laden 49ers (4-6) head into a much-needed bye week where they will try to regroup for the final six games of their season. San Francisco has little wiggle room if it expects to make the playoffs after playing the Super Bowl a season ago.

San Francisco’s next game will be at the Los Angeles Rams on Nov. 29 in what will be a must-win game for the 49ers. They’ve already taken the first matchup against the Rams, 26-14, back on Oct. 26 at Levi’s Stadium.

Nick Mullens, who was making his second-straight start and fourth of the year in place of regular starter Jimmy Garoppolo, started off the 49ers’ first possession sizzling, completing 6 of 7 passes for 47 yards and converting a couple of third downs on a 13-play, 75-yard touchdown drive.

Mullens connected with rookie wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk on a 4-yard touchdown pass to cap off a drive that lasted 7 minutes, 17 seconds giving San Francisco an early 7-0 lead.

Aiyuk finished with seven catches for 75 yards and one touchdown while being targeted a team-high 14 times.

Mullens completed 24 of 38 passes for 247 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He was briefly removed from the game in favor of C.J. Beathard in the fourth quartere on a third-and-21 play because of Beathard’s stronger arm. Beathard underthrew the ball deep to wide receiver Richie James.

Mullens would return to the field on the next series.

San Francisco dominated New Orleans the first half, gaining more total yards (166 to 90) and first downs 13 to 6). The 49ers ran 40 offensive plays to the Saints’ 21 while controlling the time of possession (22 minutes to 8 minutes).

After jumping out to a 10-0 lead following a 32-yard field goal by kicker Robbie Gould early in the second quarter, special teams made some costly mistakes.

They gave up a 75-yard kickoff return to Deonte Harris to setup a field goal for the Saints that cut the lead to 10-3.

Later in the quarter, 49ers special-teamer Ken Webster found himself too close to a punt that Trent Taylor let land. The ball hit Webster in the face mask and the Saints recovered at the 49ers’ own 21-yard line.

Two plays later, the 49ers defense made a big play when defensive tackle Kentavius Street sacked Saints quarterback Drew Brees for an 8-yard loss. Brees was hurt on the play. Street’s first career sack was nullified by a questionable roughing the passer penalty after Street landed on Brees. Replays appear to show that Street turned his body to the side to avoid landing on Brees with his full body weight.

Backup quarterback Jameis Winston replaced Brees in the second half. Brees was ruled out of the game with a rib injury. He finished 8 of 13 for 76 yards and one touchdown.

That penalty appeared to be crucial as it led to a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Alvin Kamara three plays later that tied the game at 10-10.

New Orleans would add another touchdown before the end of the first half and take a 17-10 lead into the locker room at halftime after running back Jerick McKinnon was stopped for a 2-yard loss on fourth-and-1 from the New Orleans 41-yard line. Kamara scored his second touchdown in the first half on a 3-yard pass from Brees.

It was a calamity of errors for the 49ers in the game, but the 49ers had opportunities to pull out the upset on the road. Safety Jimmie Ward dropped a potential interception inside the Saints’ territory, but the muffed punt by wide receiver Richie James in the fourth quarter was the back breaker for San Francisco.

Kamara’s third score of the game (a 1-yard run) gave the Saints a commanding 27-10 lead with 7:29 left in the game. The Saints do-it-all running back finished with seven catches for 83 yards and a touchdown, while running for 15 yards on 8 carries and two touchdowns.

The 49ers would add a 40-yard field goal to cut the Saints’ lead to 27-13, but too little too late.

San Francisco’s inability to run the football was clearly evident from the Saints closing up any and all running lanes. The aforementioned McKinnon rushed for 33 yards on 18 carries. Rookie running back JaMychal Hasty rushed for 13 yards on 3 carries, but injured his clavicle on a tackle by Saints linebacker Demario Davis.

Rookie defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw had his best game of his career, registering 1.5 of San Francisco’s three sacks. Despite the final outcome, the 49ers defense played well holding the Saints to 237 total yards and 2 of 12 on third down.

Raiders making waves in AFC West, beat up Broncos, 37-12

Before last week’s Chargers game, head coach Jon Gruden said that the next three games against AFC West opponents would be a crucial stretch.  Well, the Raiders are delivering.

The Raiders improved to 3-0 in the division with a 37-12 win over the Denver Broncos at Allegiant Stadium.

“To put 37 points up, I am excited with how we won the game,” said quarterback Derek Carr. “We are proving that we can win in any type of way, which is great.”

Carr went 16 for 25 and threw for just 154 yards and no touchdowns.

The defense held the Broncos to 66 total rushing yards and forced four Drew Lock interceptions.

“If we can get turnovers the way that we did today on defense, it will bode well for us in the future and making a run at what we really want to do,” said Carr.

Josh Jacobs led the Raiders, rushing 21 times for 112 yards and two touchdowns, while Devontae Booker rushed 16 times for 81 yards and also two touchdowns.

“The game starts with the run and ends with the run,” said Jacobs. “It’s good to see that we put our dominance on the game.”

Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson booted three field goals, one each from 22 yards, 24 yards and 52 yards.

With the win, the Raiders improved to 6-3 on the season heading into their next game at home against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

“6-3 and 3-0 in the division is a big deal,” said Carr. “But the division still goes through Kansas City and we get them next week.”

Game Notes:

  • The Raiders outgained the Broncos in total yards, 357-313.
  • Las Vegas forced five Denver turnovers.
  • Raiders’ safety Jeff Heath came up with two big interceptions.

Bruins defeat Cal in rare Sunday morning football battle 34-10

Cal Bears quarterback Chase Garbers gets into the end zone by just a corner’s worth in the first half against the UCLA Bruins on Sunday morning Nov 15th at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles (AP News photo)

Sunday, November 15, 2020

California spent its week preparing for a Pac-12 football game against Arizona State. The coronavirus pandemic provided the Golden Bears with a detour to Pasadena instead.

For their Pac-12 opener, the Golden Bears found themselves playing UCLA at the Rose Bowl on Sunday morning instead of facing ASU at Sun Devil Stadium on Saturday. UCLA romped past Cal 34-10.

The abrupt scheduling change was made due to COVID-19 issues at Arizona State, where a number of players and coaches, including head coach Herm Edwards, tested positive. The Sun Devils were unable to meet the conference minimum of 53 players in uniform.

The win evened the Bruins’ record at 1-1. Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw touchdown passes to Charles Njoku, Kyle Phillips and Chase Cota while completing 14 of 26 passes for 196 yards and one interception. Thompson-Robinson also ran for 52 yards and a touchdown.

Demetric Felton led UCLA with 107 rushing yards on 25 carries, and Brittain Brown added 71 yards and a touchdown. Greg Dulcich led the Bruins with three receptions for 80 yards.

The UCLA defense held the Bears to 54 rushing yards and 122 yards passing. Chase Garbers completed 18 of 33 passes with an interception and was sacked five times. Christopher Brown Jr. was Cal’s top rusher with 25 yards on eight carries.

Cal (0-1) opened the scoring at 11:28 of the first quarter with a Dario Longhetto 31-yard field goal. From there, it was all Bruins.

Thompson-Robinson’s 2-yard touchdown with just over a minute to play in the opening period put UCLA ahead to stay at 7-3. A 27-yard TD pass from Thompson-Robinson to Njoku extended the Bruins’ lead to 14-3.

Cal closed the gap to 14-10 on Garbers’ 8-yard touchdown run with 7:24 to play in the second quarter, but the Bruins responded with touchdown passes from Thompson-Robinson to Cota (6 yards) and Phillips (5 yards), giving UCLA a 27-10 halftime lead.

Brown’s 31-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter gave Cal a 24-point lead.

Cal travels to Oregon State (0-2) next Saturday.
